    WEATHER Romanian meteorologists on Tuesday issued a code yellow alert for unstable weather valid until Wednesday morning for half of the Romanian territory. Heavy downpours are expected in the center, in the mountains and some regions in the country’s east and south. Thunder and hailstorms have been forecast in isolated regions whereas the heatwave will remain in southern and western Romania, whose residents are again facing with a higher thermal discomfort index and more muggy days. The highs of the day will be ranging between 27 and 35 degrees with a noon reading in Bucharest of 34.

     

    PENSIONS As of October 1st the taxation ceiling of pensions in Romania is going to grow from 400 Euros at present to 600 Euros, Labour Minister Simona Bucura-Oprescu announced on Monday night. She said the decision was made after a new round of talks she had with Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu. So, on October 1st, taxes will account for 10% of the difference exceeding 3 thousand RON. The minister’s statement comes after the head of the government announced that he had called on the Finance Minister to conduct research and see whether a new taxation ceiling was needed after the implementation of the new legislation. The Finance Ministry is expected to conduct another research so that pensioners may not incur loses or have the food vouchers removed. We recall that pensions under 2 thousand lei are presently exempted from taxation but a 10% tax is levied on pensions exceeding this sum.

     

    INDEPENDENCE President Maia Sandu on Tuesday conveyed a message congratulating the citizens of the Republic of Moldova on the occasion of marking 33 years since the proclamation of the country’s independence. ”Moldova is our home and we choose a future of peace and prosperity. We are writing our history. Many Happy Returns, Moldova!” Sandu says quoted by Moldpres. In Bucharest, Romanian president Klaus Iohannis says that Romania will continue to offer strategic support to Moldova in all areas. ‘I congratulate the citizens of the Republic of Moldova on Independence Day! You are part of the great European family and the continuation of the present efforts will transform the EU accession into an accomplished objective, the Romanian head of state wrote on the X platform. Other high officials in Bucharest have conveyed congratulation messages on this occasion. On August 27 1991, tens of thousands took to the streets of Chisinau and called on Parliament to endorse the country’s independence, which it eventually did.

     

    TENNIS Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse has qualified for the second round of the US Open, the year’s last Grand Slam tournament after a two-setter against Julia Grabher of Austria. Ruse will be up next against Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic, this edition’s winner of the Wimbledon tournament. The other Romanian representatives in the singles contest, Ana Bogdan and Jaqueline Cristian have been knocked out in the first round after losing to Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands and 12th-seeded Daria Kasatkina of Russia, respectively.

    LAW The Romanian Senate is hosting debates on Monday on a draft law initiated by the co-ruling National Liberal Party on maintaining the flat income tax for the next ten years. No other laws aimed at amending or eliminating the flat income tax, are to be endorsed until December 2033. According to the initiators, this measure is meant to ensure predictability, financial stability and a trustworthy environment for the population and investors alike. The Social-Democrats, partners with the liberals in the ruling coalition, do not support this measure yet as they were pretty much in favour of progressive taxation. The Chamber of Deputies is to vote on tougher penalties for human trafficking, slavery or child pornography. The Romanian government has recently endorsed the national strategy against human trafficking, which provides for the creation of an integrated mechanism of funds destined for the protection and support of the victims.

     

    MESSAGE In a message conveyed on the occasion of the Day of the Romanians all over the World on Sunday, President Klaus Iohannis urged the Romanians to keep their identity, language and the Romanian traditions. Iohannis added that he constantly promoted the setting up of professional communities between the Romanians abroad and those at home, thus creating a tighter connection between the business people, scientists, physicians and Romanian artists from the world over, who worked together to accomplish many successful projects. On Sunday, Bucharest saw the last day of the 7th edition of a festival known as ‘Here and There’, an event that comprises a series of activities staged by the Department for the Romanians all Over the World jointly with the Union of the Fine Artists in Romania. For three days, the event brought together Romanian artists from the country and abroad, activating in various fields of creation such as fine arts, design, music, film, etcetera and also members of academia and business environment from the Romanian communities abroad. This year’s edition has been attended by hundreds of Romanians from the Diaspora and the historical communities in 34 countries.

     

     

    TENNIS Romanian tennis player Jaqueline Cristian on Sunday conceded defeat to Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in the first round of Roland Garros, the year’s second Grand Slam tournament. The ninth-seeded Ostapenko secured a win in a two setter 4-6, 5-7. Three Romanians have remained on the competition’s main draw. Sorana Cirstea, who will be playing Anna Blinkova of Russia, Ana Bogdan who will be up against Elsa Jacquemot of France and Irina Begu, who will take on Argentine challenger Julia Riera.

     

    AI Romania is going to have an AI Research Institute where it intends to develop its own technological solutions, cooperate with international partners and train top experts in this field, the country’s Finance Minister, Marcel Bolos, wrote on Facebook. According to Bolos, the Ministry he’s leading has already started to use AI in order to detect anomalies as well as in its anti-fraud operations. The construction of the first center of AI research in Romania kicked off at the Technical University in Cluj Napoca through an investment of 21 million Euros.

     

    FILMS “Anora”, a thriller directed by American Sean Baker, has won the Palme d’Or trophy at the 77th edition of the Film Festival in Cannes. Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light”, a film about sisterhood in Mumbai, has reaped the Grand Prix, the festival’s second-highest honour, while ‘Emilia Perez’ of the French director Jacques Audiard, has won the Jury Prize. Romanian production “Three Kilometers to the End of the World” has reaped the Queer Palm, an alternative award given every year to productions addressing LGBT issues. Another two Romanian productions, NASTY, directed by Cristian Pascariu, Tudor D. Popescu and Tudor Giurgiu, which portrays the life of Romania’s tennis legend Ilie Nastase, and “Human Violins” by Ioana Mischie have also been screened during this famous international film festival.

    goVisit – The Romanian Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, is paying an official visit to Ankara today, at the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The PM is accompanied by a delegation of ministers, in the context of which they will sign a series of agreements in the field of tourism, SMEs and urban planning. A joint meeting of the governments of the two states will also take place. Marcel Ciolacu and Recep Tayyip Erdogan will sign the joint declaration regarding the setting up of the high-level Strategic Cooperation Council between the two countries. According to a press release of the Romanian government, the prime minister’s intention is to increase bilateral trade exchanges to 15 billion dollars through future projects in energy, transport, agriculture, agri-food industry and defense. Last year, bilateral trade amounted to over 10 billion dollars, and Turkey is Romania’s main economic partner outside the European Union. In the context of the visit, the Turkish authorities have today published in the Official Gazette a decree under which the Romanian citizens can enter Turkey for transit or for tourism purposes only with the ID. They can stay in Turkey for 90 days at the most.

     

     

    Iran – Iran will hold elections on June 28, after the death of President Ebrahim Raisi. Today, the funeral ceremonies for the former president have begun near the place where he died on Sunday, following the crash of the helicopter he was in. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declared five days of national mourning on Monday after the death of President Ebrahim Raisi and appointed the First Vice President Mohammed Mokhbe as interim president.

     

    Royalty – Her Majesty Margareta, the Custodian of the Romanian Crown, and His Royal Highness Prince Radu are paying a visit to Luxembourg these days, in order to emphasize “Romania’s role in the European Union and NATO and to support the European aspirations of the Republic of Moldova”. In the presence of His Royal Highness Henri, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Her Majesty Margareta is giving a speech today at the Pierre Werner Institute on the security of the eastern borders of the EU and NATO. In the following days, the Custodian of the Crown and the Prince Consort will visit the University of Luxembourg and meet with students and staff from Romania. A visit is also scheduled to the Notre-Dame Saint-Sophie School, as well as to the NATO Support and Procurement Agency, where they will meet the Romanians who work there. The program also includes a meeting with the members of the Romanian community in Luxembourg, as well as the inauguration of the photography exhibition “Contribution of the Royal Family to the consolidation of Romania’s role in NATO and the EU 2002-2023”.

     

    Tennis – The Romanian tennis player Ana Bogdan was voted the winner of the Heart Award, for her contribution in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers, according to the competition’s Instagram page. Ana Bogdan won two of the three matches played in April in the meeting with Ukraine, as the Romanian team came back from 0-2 to 3-2. Thus, Romania qualified for the first time to the final tournament of the competition. The Romanian team will face Japan in the round of 16 of the Billie Jean King Cup, and if they win, they will play in the quarterfinals with Italy. The final tournament will take place between November 12-20, in Seville. On the other hand, in Strasbourg, the pair made up of the Romanian player Monica Niculescu and the Spanish Cristina Bucşa qualified, on Monday, to the quarterfinals of the doubles event of the WTA 500 tournament, after defeating the Czech-Slovak pair Marie Bouzkova/Tereza Mihalikova, 6-1, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Niculescu and Bucşa will play against the Americans Ashlyn Kruger/Sloane Stephens.

     

    Law – Penalties for trafficking in persons and minors, slavery or child pornography will no longer be suspended, according to a draft law that will receive the final vote in the Bucharest Chamber of Deputies. According to the new regulations, an increase in the penalties for these crimes will be applied. Thus, for slavery, child pornography and human trafficking, the prison sentence can reach up to 12 years, and if minors are involved, the sentence will be up to 20 years. We come back to that after the news.

     

    Moldova – The Republic of Moldova signs, today, a security and defense pact with the European Union. Cooperation in this field is intensifying against the background of the war in Ukraine and in the context in which Chişinău accused Russia of waging a hybrid war against it. The security pact will be signed within the Association Council between the two parties and takes place on the sidelines of the General Affairs Council in Brussels. The collaboration thus extends on several security levels, from the military or cyber security to the fight against manipulation and disinformation, from border management to the fight against corruption. According to the Financial Times publication, the partnership with Brussels in the field of security and defense will allow the Republic of Moldova to exchange information and carry out joint military exercises, as well as to be included in the common arms procurement system of the EU.     LAW Romania’s Constitutional Court is today tackling a notification from the Higher Court of Cassation and Justice regarding the so-called law of the fugitives, which says that offenders who are to serve prison sentences and do not present themselves to a police station in seven days will be considered fugitives and get an additional sentence between six months and three years. According to the Higher Court, this law infringes upon the citizens’ right to a fair trial and to individual freedom. The list of famous fugitives includes the former mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu, the former head of Romania’s Department for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism, Alina Bica, Mario Iorgulescu, the son of the president of the Professional Football League, Gino Iorgulescu or Paul Philippe of Romania, a grandson of king Carol ll. The former mayor of Baia Mare, Catalin Chereches, who had fled to Germany after having been sentenced to five years in prison for bribery was brought to Romania on Tuesday and sent to the maximum security prison in Arad, western Romania.

     

     

    ELECTIONS Physician Catalin Cîrstoiu, manager of the University hospital in Bucharest, has today been presented in a news conference as the joint candidate for the Bucharest mayor seat by the ruling PSD-PNL coalition. Cîrstoiu will not join either party, and get support as an independent candidate during the local election of June 9th. In the following days, the Social-Democrats and Liberals are expected to announce their joint candidates for the mayor seats of the Bucharest’s six districts. We recall that 2024 is an election year in Romania, which will see election rounds for the European Parliament and local administration in June, for the presidential seat in September and the local Parliament in December.

     

     

    STRIKE Employees of Romania’s National Post Office have gone on a warning strike in an attempt to get pay rises. Protesters have called for an 80 euro rise and an increase in the loyalty bonus between 5 and 10 %. The National Trade Union Block, BNS, says that unless negotiations on the collective labour contract improve, an all-out strike is to follow shortly. Trade union leaders have underlined that almost half of Romania’s population is expected to bear the brunt of an all-out strike as the National Post Office will not be able to deliver pensions to the five million pensioners Romania presently has, as well as the social benefits to people in difficult situations. According to the Trade Union Block, two thirds of the employees of the national post company have the lowest salaries in Romania’s economy.

     

    TENNIS Three Romanian tennis players, Simona Halep, Ana Bogdan and Jaqueline Cristian have conceded defeat in the first day of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami, Florida, a competition with over 8.7 million dollars in prize money. Cristian was outperformed by Diane Parry of France, 6-7, 2-6, while Ana Bogdan lost to the Czech Katerina Siniakova, 6-2, 6-4. After a long absence from competitions, Simona Halep took on Paula Badosa of Spain, who eventually won the match 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Halep needed medical attention after the second set. The organisers have offered a wild card to Halep, who is no longer part of the WTA ranking. A former number one player, Halep had not played an official game since August 29, 2022 when she tested positive for a banned substance. The Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne had admitted Halep’s appeal and reduced her initial four year suspension to nine months.

     

     

    WEATHER Temperatures are on the rise as compared to the previous day in most of Romania’s regions being within the normal range for this time of the year. The sky is overcast in the country’s north, center and east as well as in the mountains. Showers and mixed precipitations have been reported on small areas in the east, center, south and north-east. The highs of the day are ranging between 6 and 14 degrees centigrade with a noon reading in Bucharest of 8 degrees Celsius.

    Openul Australiei la tenis, primul turneu de Mare Şlem al anului, a ajuns la faza sferturilor de finală. Mai mulţi favoriţi, printre care poloneza Iga Swiatek, numărul unu mondial, au părăsit deja competiţia. Jucătorii români, atât la simplu, cât şi la dublu, au ieşit din concurs încă din prima saptămână.



    Ultimul care a intrat pe teren a fost Victor Cornea care, sâmbătă, a pierdut în turul doi al probei de dublu masculin, unde a evoluat alături de indianul Nsriram Balaji. Cei doi au fost învinşi de cuplul compus din salvadorianul Marcelo Arevalo şi croatul Mate Pavic, numărul zece pe lista perechilor favorite, cu 6-3, 6-3. Cornea, sportiv care ocupă locul 69 în clasamentul mondial de dublu, s-a aflat la a treia sa participare la un turneu de Mare Şlem, după ce, anul trecut, a evoluat la Roland Garros şi la US Open. Acum, a obţinut şi prima sa victorie. El şi Nsriram Balaji au trecut, în primul tur, de italienii Matteo Arnaldi şi Andrea Pellegrino, cu 6-3, 6-4. Perechea româno-indiană şi-a asigurat astfel un cec de 53.000 de dolari australieni.



    Victor Cornea a fost primul jucător român intrat pe tabloul principal al unui turneu de Mare Şlem într-o probă masculină din 2021 încoace. Ultimul fusese Horia Tecău, care s-a retras în 2022 şi care a obţinut ultimele victorii de Mare Şlem la ediţia 2021 a Openului american alături de germanul Kevin Krawietz.



    Anul acesta, la Melbourne, ultima româncă prezentă în proba de dublu feminin a fost Ana Bogdan. În turul doi, Ana şi jucătoarea spaniolă de origine slovacă Rebeka Masarova au fost învinse de cuplul americano-japonez Desirae Krawczyk / Ena Shibahara, cap de serie numărul şase, cu 6-3, 6-1. La simplu, nicio jucătoare din România nu a trecut de primul tur.



    Tenisul românesc simte clar absenţa Simonei Halep. Fostul lider mondial este încă sub efectul unei suspendări pentru dopaj şi aşteaptă rejudecarea cazului său la Tribunalul de Arbitraj Sportiv de la Lausanne, în prima decadă a lunii februarie.

    Romania now boasts three athletes among the world’s first 100 tennis
    players. The best ranking at present is Sorana Cirstea, currently on the 26th
    position, followed by Ana Bogdan who comes 61st and Irina Begu on
    the 66th position. Sorana has gone down a notch since last week and
    Irina five whereas Bogdan has gone up ten positions thanks to her winning of
    the WTA 125 tournament in Parma, a performance, which also brought her the
    Athlete of the Week title granted weekly to the best Romanian performance by
    our radio station.




    Ana Bogdan last year stopped in the semifinals of the Parma Ladies Open
    but this edition was second-seeded. She defeated Spanish Marina Bassols Ribera
    in the first round 6-1, 7-5, then Ukrainian Katarina Zavatska in three sets,
    4-6, 6-2, 6-4. She also clinched a three-set win against her compatriot
    Jaqueline Cristian 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 in the quarter-finals. In the semifinals, the
    Romanian managed to outperform Hungarian challenger Anna Bondar 6-3, 6-4 in a match
    that lasted two hours and 40 minutes, the longest she played in Parma. The
    Romanian eventually managed to secure a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Anna Karolina
    Schmiedlova of Slovakia in the finals.




    Ana Bogdan was born on November 25th 1992 in Sinaia, southern
    Romania, and turned professional in 2007. Two years later she went second in
    the world junior ranking. She made constant headway in the WTA ranking until
    2008. She stayed around the 100th position for a while but in 2022
    and 2023 she succeeded in getting higher into the ranking. In July this year
    she occupied the 39th position, the best in her career so far and
    she’s still waiting for her first WTA title. She has so far achieved three WTA
    125 titles, in Iasi in 2022 and 2023 and now in Parma.

  • Săptămâna sportivă

    Jucătoarea română
    de tenis Ana Bogdan a câştigat sâmbătă turneul WTA 125 de la Parma, dotat cu
    premii de 100 de mii de euro. Cap de
    serie numărul 2, românca a trecut în finală de principala favorită, jucătoarea
    slovacă Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, cu 7-5, 6-1. Ea a primit, pentru acest
    succes, 13.040 de euro şi 160 de puncte WTA.


    Weekendul abia
    încheiat nu a priit echipelor care reprezintă România în Liga Campionilor la
    handbal feminin. Sâmbătă, CSM Bucureşti a pierdut, acasă, cu 23 la 27 în faţa
    formaţiei maghiare Győr. Campioana României ocupă, după trei etape, locul 5 în
    Grupa A, cu 2 puncte, după o victorie şi două înfrângeri. Tot un succes şi două
    înfrângeri are şi Rapid Bucureşti, in Grupa B. Vicecampioana României a fost
    invinsă categoric, la Bucureşti, duminică, de echipa daneză Ikast, cu 35 la 27.
    Cu două puncte, Rapid ocupă locul 6 în grupă.


    România nu a reuşit
    să câştige nicio medalie la Campionatele Mondiale de lupte de la Belgrad şi
    nici nu a calificat vreun sportiv la Jocurile Olimpice de la Paris prin
    intermediul acestei competiţii. La întrecerile din capitala sârbă, delegaţia
    română a fost compusă din 16 luptători, dintre care 5 la lupte libere, 5 la
    greco-romane şi 6 în competiţia feminină.


    Scrimera americană
    Zander Rhoades a câştigat Memorialul Tudor Petruş la floretă, turneu satelit
    din Cupa Mondială, desfăşurat duminică la Timişoara. Ea a învins-o în finală pe
    floretista italiană Carlotta Ferrari, cu scorul de 15-11. Podiumul a fost completat
    de românca Emilia Corbu şi de ucraineanca Alina Poloziuk.


    Mai departe,
    fotbal. În weekend au avut loc jocuri contând pentru etapa a zecea a
    campionatului Superligii române. Vineri, Oţelul Galaţi a trecut, în deplasare,

    Jucătoarea română
    de tenis Ana Bogdan a câştigat sâmbătă turneul WTA 125 de la Parma, dotat cu
    premii de 100 de mii de euro. Cap de
    serie numărul 2, românca a trecut în finală de principala favorită, jucătoarea
    slovacă Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, cu 7-5, 6-1. Ea a primit, pentru acest
    succes, 13.040 de euro şi 160 de puncte WTA.


    Weekendul abia
    încheiat nu a priit echipelor care reprezintă România în Liga Campionilor la
    handbal feminin. Sâmbătă, CSM Bucureşti a pierdut, acasă, cu 23 la 27 în faţa
    formaţiei maghiare Győr. Campioana României ocupă, după trei etape, locul 5 în
    Grupa A, cu 2 puncte, după o victorie şi două înfrângeri. Tot un succes şi două
    înfrângeri are şi Rapid Bucureşti, in Grupa B. Vicecampioana României a fost
    invinsă categoric, la Bucureşti, duminică, de echipa daneză Ikast, cu 35 la 27.

    România nu a reuşit
    să câştige nicio medalie la Campionatele Mondiale de lupte de la Belgrad şi

    intermediul acestei competiţii. La întrecerile din capitala sârbă, delegaţia
    română a fost compusă din 16 luptători, dintre care 5 la lupte libere, 5 la

    Scrimera americană
    Zander Rhoades a câştigat Memorialul Tudor Petruş la floretă, turneu satelit
    din Cupa Mondială, desfăşurat duminică la Timişoara. Ea a învins-o în finală pe
    floretista italiană Carlotta Ferrari, cu scorul de 15-11. Podiumul a fost completat
    de românca Emilia Corbu şi de ucraineanca Alina Poloziuk.

    Săptămâna trecută s-a desfăşurat cel mai important eveniment sportiv programat în partea de est a României — turneul de tenis WTA 125 BCR Iaşi Open. Competiţia a avut loc pe zgură, a fost dotată cu premii în valoare de 100 de mii de euro, iar printre favorite s-au aflat patru jucătoare din primele 100 de sportive ale clasamentului mondial. Cap de serie numărul 1 a fost Irina Begu, iar numărul 2 – câştigătoarea ediţiei de anul trecut a turneului de la Iaşi, Ana Bogdan. Cele două sportive s-au întâlnit în finala turneului, pe care Bogdan a câştigat-o, duminică, în două seturi, cu 6-2, 6-3. În urma acestui rezultat, Radio România Internaţional a desemnat-o pe Ana Bogdan Sportivul Săptămânii.



    Ana a început destul de greu turneul de la Iaşi. În primul tur a avut nevoie de două ore şi 21 de minute pentru a trece de Barbora Palicová, din Cehia, jucătoare de 19 ani, locul 210 WTA. A pierdut primul set cu 2-6, l-a luat pe al doilea cu 7-5 şi a defilat în setul decisiv, câştigat cu 6-1. Nici jocul din optimile de finală nu a fost mai uşor. Conny Perrin, sportivă de 32 de ani din Elveţia, numărul 433 mondial, a rezistat Anei vreme de două ore şi 17 minute. Românca s-a impus, în cele din urmă, cu 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.



    A urmat, în sferturi, o altă elveţiancă, Simona Waltert, 22 ani, 131 WTA, a cincea favorită. A fost mai simplu: 6-0, 6-4 pentru Bogdan. Semifinala cu Raluka Şerban, numărul 166 WTA, sportivă română de 26 de ani care concurează pentru Cipru, a fost partida cea mai lungă a Anei în ediţia de anul acesta a turneului de la Iaşi — două ore şi 42 de minute. Scor final — 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. A urmat finala cu Irina Begu.



    Ana Bogdan s-a născut pe 25 noiembrie 1992, la Sinaia. A trecut la profesionism în 2007. În 2009 era a doua în clasamentul mondial al junioarelor. În ierarhia WTA, a urcat, până în 2018, lent, dar constant. A rămas apoi în apropierea locului 100, dar în 2-22 şi 2023 a reuşit să meargă mai sus. În acest moment ocupă locul 39, cel mai bun din întreaga sa carieră. Între jucătoarele române, este a doua, după Sorana Cîrstea, situata pe locul 32.

    Rowing. Romania ended the World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Plovdiv (Bulgaria) with two gold medals.
