100 free, going 46.86. Then, he swam a 1:42.97 in the 200 free, becoming the

    RECYCLING
All traders in Romania that sell bottled water, soft drinks or alcoholic drinks
in plastic, glass or metal containers between 100 ml and 3 l are bound to
register within 2 months on the platform of a guarantee-return system (SGR). Otherwise,
they risk fines between EUR 4,000 and EUR 8,000. The authorities want the
system to become operational at the end of November 2023. Shops will also have
to arrange packaging return centres. The prices of drinks will include the
roughly EUR 0.10 packaging guarantee, which consumers will collect when
returning the bottles. Romania will thus have the second-largest return system in
Europe, after Germany, the environment minister Tanczos Barna said recently.

    NATO
Western countries must be prepared to provide long-term support to Ukraine as
Russia shows no signs of relenting, NATO’s secretary general Jens Stoltenberg said.
In an interview to the BBC, Stoltenberg saidmilitary
support would ensure the survival of Ukraine as a sovereign country and force
Russia to sit down and negotiate an end to the war. According to Jens Stoltenberg,
Russia’s partial mobilisation programme, ordered in September, indicated that
Moscow had no desire to end the war, and NATO must make sure that Ukraine stays
in a strong position in the event of negotiation talks between the two sides.

targeting the capital city in particular. Air raid alerts sounded for several
hours, and local authorities say a young man was injured and several buildings
damaged. This is the second consecutive night of heavy Russian missile attacks
on Kyiv, after the massive one on New Year’s night. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian
forces, which destroyed some of the drones, announced having caused substantial
casualties among the Russian troops in Bakhmut, a small town in the east of the
country which has been seeing heavy fighting for several months now. Apparently
170 Russian troops were killed and at least 200 wounded. Moscow has not yet
confirmed the losses, but said its recent attacks targeted buildings where the

  • ‘The Christmas Gift’ singled out for the Oscars

‘The Christmas Gift’ singled out for the Oscars

Director Bogdan Mureșanus film ‘The Christmas Gift has been short-listed for the Oscar 2020 Awards. At present, only 10 of the 191 registered shorts have been left in the competition. The final list with 5 nominations will be announced on January 13, 2020, following the votes cast by the members of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences specialized in short films.

In early December, Bogdan Mureșanus film ‘The Christmas Gift received a prize from the European Film Academy – EFA. His movie has actually won many international prizes among which the Grand Prize of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, the prize of the Days of Romanian film at the Transylvania International Film Festival TIFF, the Grand Prize of the short film contest of the Cottbus Film Festival and a special mention at the Montpellier Festival.

The films action is set on the evening of December 20, 1989 and the plot starts from the letter a small boy wrote to Santa Claus, in which he reveals what his parents wish for Christmas. His father discovers, horrified, that his son had written in the letter that his fathers wish was to see Ceausescu dead. One of Bogdan Mureșanus intentions was to turn the film ‘The Christmas Gift into a black comedy:

Bogdan Mureșanu: “I strained myself trying to achieve that, trying to turn the story into a black comedy. It seems that I managed to do that. Because my film was selected for many festivals of the world and I noticed that, in spite of cultural differences, people are quite amused when watching the film. At first I was really astonished to see that those people did understand the nuances of the dialogue. When I was editing the film, I was afraid that viewers from other countries might not grasp all the hints and allusions in the film. I thought they might find it difficult to understand who uncle Nicu was, how one could be afraid of ones own neighbor, how one could suspect ones spouse, and so on. I was afraid the film would be understood only by viewers from the eastern countries, who had that experience first hand. I was happy to see that the film was selected at a number of festivals, that the message of the film was grasped by the members of the jury. And I was happy to see that what I perceived as local language proved to be universal language.

Bogdan Mureșanu confessed that the film was a Christmas present that he received earlier. At the awards gala in Berlin, when he was awarded the prize of the European Film Academy, he said his real joy was to be together with some of the people he loved and admired.

Set up in 1988, the European Film Academy gathers more than 3,600 professionals form the filmmaking industry and its aims is to promote the European film. The EFA awards galas are held every 2 years in Germanys capital, and, in the other years, in various European cities. The winners are designated following the vote of the more than 3,600 members of the European Film Academy. Here is Bogdan Mureșanu with impressions on the prize his film received:

Bogdan Mureșanu: “It is an honor for me, because the EFA is made up of professionals who watch lots of movies and who are up to date with the latest films. I know many of these professionals, directors, actors, screenwriters, and I was aware of their impressions about the film. At the awards gala, I shook hands with Wim Wenders, a director whom I admire a lot and who told me he liked the film. I also talked to another cinema star, Werner Herzog, so, for me the awards gala was something magical.

Next Bogdan Mureșanu spoke about the feedback his film received:

Bogdan Mureșanu: “As I have already said, I first thought that the film would resonate with the people in the eastern bloc, and I did not expect that the movie would be so much appreciated. This means that there is something universal about this story, it is not just something local. People have identified in the film aspects that go beyond that historical moment of December 1989. I was happy to see that the film was well received in America too. You can never anticipate such things.

The cast of ‘The Christmas gift includes Andrei Văncică, Ioana Flora and the child Luca Toma.

  • End of year sport rankings

    End of year sport rankings

The year end is, in all fields, a good opportunity to take a moment and look back, at both accomplishments and failures, and to reward performers. It is the case in Romanian sports as well, where specialist federations as well as regional, local and club teams are drawing up their final standings for the year.

Designated the best Romanian footballer of the year is George Puscas, who currently plays for the British side Reading. He was one of the authors of Romanias qualification into the semi-finals of the European youth championship, and is one of the most efficient Romanian strikers playing abroad. In the same event that rewarded Puscas as the best player, namely the Romanian Football Gala, Razvan Lucescu was awarded the title of best Romanian coach of the year 2019. He won the Greek football championship and Cup trophies with his team, PAOK Thessaloniki, and then he moved to the Saudi side Al Hilal to win the Asian Champions League.

Florinel Coman, a striker for FCSB, tops the charts of the Romanian League I players, according to data made public by InStat, quoted by Agerpres news agency. InStat came up with an index that assesses football performances based on objective criteria, and according to which Florinel Coman, with 314 points, is followed by Constantin Budescu, playing for Astra Giurgiu, and by Adrian Paun of CFR Cluj, both with 307 points. The best score in this ranking is 401, for Barcelona star player Lionel Messi, who has recently been awarded the 6th golden shoe trophy in his career.

Sabre athlete Bianca Pascu, a member of Dinamo Bucharest club, was designated the best Romanian fencer of the year 2019. Her main accomplishment this year was the bronze medal won in the World Championships held in Budapest, Hungary, in July. In that competition, Bianca was the only member of the Romanian delegation to come home with a medal.

The Romanian-born Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu, number 5 in the world and winner of the 2019 US Open, was unanimously voted the Athlete of the Year in Canada by a panel of 30 sports journalists, in what counted as an absolute first for a tennis player.
