    Rome – The Romanian President Klaus Iohannis is paying a 4-day official visit to Italy, the first visit by a Romanian head of state in the past 45 years. According to a communiqué of the Presidential Administration he is to meet his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella, the PM Giuseppe Conte, and the speakers of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati and Roberto Fico. His agenda also includes meetings with the representatives of some religious denominations and of the Romanian community, which is the most numerous community from outside Romania, numbering around 1.5 million people. The visit takes place in the context of the celebration of the Great Union centennial and of 10 years since the relation between Romania and Italy reached the level of Consolidated Strategic Partnership.



    Elections — The Ministry for Romanians Abroad has hailed the involvement of the Romanian citizens in Sunday’s local elections in Belgium. Through their presence on the Belgian political scene, these Romanian citizens honor their country of origin, writes the aforementioned ministry in a communiqué. 46 Romanians are running on the lists of several parties from Belgium, for local councilor positions in several cities including the capital Brussels. According to a communiqué of the Ministry for Romanians Abroad as many as 40 thousand Romanians are living n Brussels and more than 70 thousand across Belgium.



    Kuala Lumpur — The Romanian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is following with priority the situation of the 3 Romanians imprisoned in Malaysia — the Romanian Foreign Ministry officials announced on Saturday. They have been detained for drug trafficking. Two of them have received a definitive death sentence while the trial of the third one is still under way. At present the Malaysian law provides for the death penalty by hanging for crimes such as murder, kidnapping, possession of firearms and drug trafficking. Recently the government in Kuala Lumpur has agreed to abolish the death penalty, and an amendment in this regard is to be submitted to the vote of Parliament on Monday. The Romanian Foreign Ministry recalls that in Romania a citizen’s right to life is inalienable.



    Marathon — Bucharest is hosting this weekend the International Marathon, a competition that has been organized for 11 years to promote a healthy and active lifestyle in Bucharest. The races for children and teenagers have been scheduled for Saturday and Sunday will see the classical race of about 42 km, followed by a semi-marathon and a relay race. This year’s edition of the Bucharest International Marathon has gathered around 19 thousand people from more than 70 countries.



    Football — Romania’s national football team is playing Sunday in Bucharest against the Serbian eleven, in a match counting for Group 4 of League C of the newly-created Nations League competition. Last month in Belgrade the two teams drew the match 2-all. In the group’s standings Serbia is the leader with 7 points being followed by Romania with 5 points, Montenegro with 4 points and Lithuania with 0 points. On Friday evening Romania’s Under-21 team defeated the team of Wales on home ground 2-0 in Cluj (northwest), in the last but one match of Group 8 of the preliminaries of the 2019 European Championship. In their last match of the group, on Tuesday, the Romanian team will take on, also on home ground, in Ploiesti, south, the team of Lichtenstein.     RESHUFFLE – The Romanian Prime Minister Mihai Tudose has said he will present president Klaus Iohannis, on Monday, with his proposals for the new heads of the development, transport and European funds ministries, namely Paul Stanescu, Felix Stroe and Marius Nica, respectively. The nominations were made on Friday by the Social Democratic Party, the senior partner in the ruling coalition. They will replace Sevil Shhaideh, Rovana Plumb and Razvan Cuc, who have resigned. Shhaideh and Plumb are being investigated by the National Anticorruption Directorate for corruption. Also on Friday, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, the Social Democrats ruling partner, said it would not withdraw support for its representative in the cabinet, the minister for liaison with Parliament, Viorel Ilie, who is under investigation for influence peddling.



    MEETING – Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu on Tuesday is to attend the Foreign Affairs Council meeting hosted by Luxembourg. According to a Ministry release, the agenda of the meeting includes hot topics on the European agenda, such as the developments in Iran and North Korea and human rights. Ministers will also exchange views over the situation in Turkey and regional security.



    MARATHON – Duncan Cheriyot Koech of Kenya won Sundays mens race in the 10th edition of Bucharest International Marathon. Almaz Gelena Erba of Ethiopia won the womens race, where Romanian Ana Veronica Rodean came in third. Over 17,000 people took part in this years edition. Camelia Potec, the chairman of the Romanian Swimming Federation, Ana-Maria Popescu, multiple Olympic epee champion, former rower Camelia Lupascu and former judoka Alina Dumitru were the events ambassadors.



    SUMMIT – Attending the Consumer Summit in Bratislava, Romanian authorities got involved in clarifying dual standards of food quality, creating a new mechanism of cooperation to identity products that might have different quality parameters. According to a release of the Agriculture Ministry, Romanian experts will work together with MEPs to come up with new regulations in this field. With a view to analyzing and identifying dual food standards for products manufactured in Western Europe and exported to Eastern Europe, this February Romanian authorities set up a task force made up of representatives of the Agriculture Ministry, the National Food Safety Authority and the Consumer Protection Agency. Romania believes that a new and clear legislation is needed at EU level, in addition to specific and unitary methodologies and a strong cooperation between Member States and the Commission, so as to best respond to issues posed by dual food standards.



    THEATRE FESTIVAL – Theatre companies from several countries, including Israel, the United States, France, Poland and Russia are as of Sunday taking part in the second edition of the International Festival of Yiddish Theatre. Hosted by Bucharest, the event offers workshops, conferences, exhibitions and concerts.



    ELECTION – The Conservative Peoples Party led by 31-year-old Sebastian Kurz, the acting Foreign Minister, has won Sundays election according to exit polls, making Kurz the youngest Prime Minister in the world. Kurz wants to suppress the far right, taking a strong stand against migrants and promising to prevent a new European migration crisis. For over a decade the Social Democrats ruled in Austria alongside the Peoples Party.



    TERRORISM – The death toll of Saturdays double-bomb attack in Mogadishu has reached 130, while over 300 are wounded, making it the worst terrorist attack since 2007, when Al-Qaeda jihadists launched the insurgency against the Government backed by the UN and the African Union. The Police says a truck blew off in front of a hotel, hosting government offices, restaurants and retail stores, causing the collapse of several buildings and car fires. Two hours later a second bomb went off in a residential district. Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has called a three-day period of national mourning. Although the attack hasnt been claimed, Al-Qaeda terrorists frequently launch attacks on Mogadishu and its surroundings, France Press reports.



    TENNIS – The pair made up of Irina Begu of Romania and Sara Errani of Italy on Sunday won the womens doubles of the WTA tournament in Tianjin, China, after defeating Dalia Jakupovic of Slovenia and Nina Stojanovic of Serbia, 6-4, 6-3 in the finals. Also in China, at the tournament in Shanghai, Horia Tecau of Romania and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands lost 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 to Lukasz Kubot of Poland and Marcelo Melo of Brazil in the semi-finals of the 1000 ATP Masters. Tecau and Rojer will nevertheless play in the ATP Finals to be hosted this month by Singapore. Romanian Simona Halep, WTA no. 1, will also play in the WTA finals. (Translated by V. Palcu)

    The Romanian PM was received on Sunday in Amman by King Abdullah II of Jordan. The meeting was also attended by the Romanian foreign minister Bogdan Aurescu. The PM Ponta, who paid an official visit to Jordan at the invitation of his counterpart Abdullah Ensour also had talks with other Jordanian high officials about the stage of bilateral relations and the refugee crisis in the region. The Romanian PM hailed the efforts made by Jordan for managing the crisis, a country which hosts almost 1 million refugees from Syria. Romania wants to intensify cooperation with Jordan and also to contribute to the peace efforts in the Middle East by mediating the contacts between Israelis and Palestinians.



    A new protest was held in Chisinau on Sunday by civil society against the high level corruption cases in the Republic of Moldova. The protesters want the corrupt leaders of the country to resign and to hold early elections. However the current power says early elections would push the Republic of Modova into a deep political and economic crisis. The protests have been held for about a month, after the three-party government coalition, that claimed to have a pro-western orientation, was seriously discredited by the disappearance from the country’s banking system of one billion dollars, which accounted for about 15% of the GDP. The pro-Moscow socialist and populist opposition has lately joined the protests that blocked traffic in the center of Chisinau.



    For a month, 36 thousand soldiers from the NATO member states, Romania included, will participate in the Alliance’s largest drill held in the past 13 years. The exercises will take place simultaneously in areas in Italy, Portugal, Spain, the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, Canada, Norway, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Through this exercise NATO wants to prove and extend its capabilities to respond to current and future threats. The drill is taking place against the backdrop of tension between NATO and Russia regarding the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria and of the refugee crisis.



    The Romanian Eliza Samara on Sunday won the gold medal in the final of the women’s singles of the European Table Tennis Championships hosted by the Russian town of Ekaterinburg. On Sunday in the final Samara defeated the Dutch Jie Li with the final score 4-3 (11-6, 9-11, 3-11, 11-7, 12-14, 11-4, 11-4). Also on Sunday the pair made up of Samara and the Hungarian Georgina Pota got the silver medal in the doubles competition after being defeated by the pair Melek Hu of Turkey/ Yanfei Shen of Spain. For Samara this is the 2nd silver medal won in Ekaterinburg after the silver won alongside Romania’s team.



    The Kenyan athlete Patrick Kimeli on Sunday won the 8th edition of the Raiffeisen Bank Bucharest Marathon on the classical distance of 42.195 kms with 2h13min15sec, which is a new record of the competition. Kimeli was followed by another two Africans, Ethiopian Bonja Gonza and Kenyan Cosmas Kigan. The women’s race was won by Warjik Zeritu of Ethiopia with 2h48min5sec followed by her conational Shewye Deebelu and Gladys Otero of Kenya. The Bucharest marathon was an opportunity to raise money for NGOs operating in the healthcare and environment protection fields.
