    The Sports Year 2024

Romania made it back to the world’s top rankings in 2024. At the Olympics in Paris, the Romanian delegation came 23rd in the world’s medal ranking, a headway since the previous edition in Tokyo, where they ranked only 46th.

The Olympic Games kicked off in Paris in late July with a grandiose but controversial ceremony of issues less related to sports though…The first medals for Romania were brought by swimmer David Popovici: gold in the 200 meters free-style race and bronze in the 100-meter event.

Then Andrei Cornea and Marian Enache stepped onto the podium’s highest step in the double scull race and so did Simona Radiş and Ancuţa Bodnar in the similar women’s event. Ioana Vrînceanu and Roxana Anghel became silver medalists in the women’s pair event and so did Gianina van Groningen and Ionela Cozmiuc in the women’s lightweight double scull. The third Olympic title was obtained by the Romanian eight in the last day of the rowing competitions.

Weightlifter Mihaela Cambei reaped silver in the 49 kilogram category, while gymnast Ana Maria Barbosu obtained bronze in the floor event, upon a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport based in Lausanne.

Football again grabbed the limelight after the end of the Olympics, and Romania boasted a representative in the Champions League’s qualifiers, FCSB, one in the Europa League’s qualifiers, Corvinul Hunedoara, and another two in the Conference League: CFR Cluj and Universitatea Craiova. FCSB made it to the third round of the Champions league, where they were stopped in their tracks by the Czech side Sparta Prague. The Romanian champions later played in the playoffs for Europa League, where they outperformed LASK Linz of Austria. After six matches, FCSB ranked 10th in Europa League with three wins, two draws and a defeat.

In January they will be playing Qarabag of Azerbaijan, and Manchester United in a home match. Corvinul Hunedoara were knocked out in the second preliminary round by Rijeka of Croatia. They next joined the Conference League’s third round where they got outperformed by Astana of Kazakhstan. In the same competition Universitatea Craiova were knocked out of the qualifiers by the Slovenian side Maribor. CFR Cluj managed to obtain the best performance and made it to the play-offs, where they lost to Cypriote side Pafos.

In the second half of the year, Romania’s national football side played in the Nations League under the guidance of the famous Romanian headcoach and football legend, Mircea Lucescu, who had come back to the Romanian national side after almost 40 years. Romania won all the six matches in the second group of League C, which also included Cyprus, Lithuania and Kosovo. Our footballers won five matches and the match in Bucharest against Kosovo was decided by the UEFA after the visitors had left the pitch before the final whistle and the result was three-nil to Romania. So Romania ended up among the best four winners in the Nations League groups and secured their place in the World Cup playoffs. Lots drawn in December have placed Romania in Group H together with Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus and San Marino. Our footballers will be playing Bosnia and Herzegovina in March. The group’s winners are directly qualified whereas the 12 sides in the second positions in the groups plus the best sides in the 2024-2025 edition of the Nations League, which didn’t qualify in the preliminaries, will be vying for the four places available in the European zone.

We cannot end without mentioning the best Romanian athletes who left us in 2024. Canoe sprinter Vasile Dîba left us in February. Dîba stepped on the highest step of the podium at the Montreal Olympics in 1976. The former great handballer Stefan Birtalan, double world champion and Olympic medalist, left us in May.

Javelin thrower, Mihaela Peneş, gold medalist at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and silver medalist in Mexico City in 1968, left us in August. On December 2 we lost one of Romania’s greatest goalkeepers, Helmut Duckadam. He was dubbed the Hero in Seville, after he had saved four penalty shots in the 1986 finals of the European Champions Cup Steaua Bucharest won against Barcelona.

Dan Grecu, the first world champion in Romania’s men gymnastics, bronze medalist at the Montreal Olympics in 1976 also left us in December.

Fugitives – The Romanian Justice Ministry announces that it has brought back to the country other Romanian citizens who had fled abroad to avoid serving prison sentences, namely human traffickers and pimps. Among them there is a woman convicted of pimping at 6 years and 9 months, brought from the Netherlands. Another fugitive, brought from Italy, has to serve a sentence of 6 years and 1 month for human trafficking. We remind you that, this year, the so-called Fugitives Law entered into force, by which persons convicted and repatriated to serve their criminal sentence are obliged to pay the costs of being brought back to Romania. Only in 2023, the costs for bringing back to Romania over 800 Romanian citizens in this situation exceeded 10 million lei (around 2 million Euros).

Untold – The biggest music festival in Romania, Untold, continues in Cluj-Napoca (north-west). Until Sunday, more than 250 top national and international artists perform for tens of thousands of fans from all over the world. Besides the concerts, the organizers have also prepared numerous thematic parties, and as a novelty, on the main stage, the performance of musical pieces is also done in sign language for people with hearing impairments. The authorities pay special attention to preventing the sale and consumption of drugs during the festival.

Olympics – Today, Romanian athletes are competing at the Olympic Games in Paris, in one sport – wrestling. Romania has so far won eight medals at the Olympic Games – three gold, four silver and one bronze. After the races on the 14th official day of competitions, Romania dropped to 20th place in the nations’ ranking. On Friday, to the astonishment of many Romanians, Cătălin Chirilă failed qualification in the final of the 1,000 m canoe singles event, although in the heats he had broken the 20-year-old record of the event. The athlete, a world champion in 2022 and world vice champion in 2023, declared that he was confused by the weather, the wind being quite strong and the waves big.

Inflation – The National Bank of Romania significantly improved, on Friday, the estimates regarding the evolution of inflation, from 4.9% to 4% per year for the end of 2024. The downward trend should be maintained at the beginning of next year, followed by a temporary increase in the spring of 2025, then a return to the downward trend. The national bank calculates an annual inflation rate of 3.4% for the end of next year, slightly below the previously estimated level. The central bank governor, Mugur Isărescu, stated that the inflation forecast also took into account possible risks or uncertainties, including the conduct of fiscal and revenue policies, as well as the evolution of energy and food prices.

Moscow – The Russian aviation authority has banned Russian airlines from flying into Israel’s airspace in the following nights, the dpa news agency reports. The ban entered into force today and is valid until August 16. Moscow did not provide a reason for the decision, but dpa believes it could be linked to a feared Iranian airstrike on Israel. Russia is a close ally of Tehran and has recently stepped up its deliveries of air defense weapons to the Iranians. Many international airlines have canceled their flights to Israel due to the threat of war in the region. Meanwhile, Israel has agreed to sending negotiators to the new talks on a cease-fire agreement and the release of hostages in Gaza, following an urgent appeal by the mediator countries – the United States, Egypt and Qatar. Hamas has not yet responded to the call, seen as an attempt to stop the escalation of the conflict, after the assassination of the political leader of the Palestinian group, Ismail Haniyeh. One of Romania’s greatest athletes has recently celebrated his 89th birthday anniversary. A time-honored veteran of our Olympic champions, born on July 22nd, 1934, Leon Rotman was the first Romanian to have won two gold medals at the same edition of the Olympic Games, in Melbourne, in 1956.

Leon Rotman was born in the old Bucharest neighborhood of Dudesti, into the family of a Jewish store-keeper. When he was 15 and still an apprentice with the Timpuri Noi plants, Leon Rotman took up training on the premises of Flacara club’s wrestling hall, being one of the 67-kilgram hopefuls. In 1952, when on the shores of the Floreasca lake, he discovered the nautical sports. Soon afterwards he was granted membership of Dinamo Bucharest Sports club’s kayak-canoe section. Rotman was quick to persuade his coaches that his place was definitely in the men’s canoe single boat. It didn’t take Rotman too long to succeed a string of wins at national level, so much so that he gained membership of the delegation representing Romania at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956. Back then, three of the four gold medals won in the men’s canoe events went to the Romanian rowers, who had no problem outclassing their challengers from Russia and Hungary, then the dominating powers in the nautical sports.

Rotman’s s first noteworthy victory occurred in the 10,000m race. The Romanian had problems registering for the event since his boat was slightly bent, an official irregularity according to the competition’s organizers. Rotman was given another boat, but that also had a problem: it was longer than officially stipulated. The canoe was shortened with a saw, then during the race Rotman displayed his force and talent, defeating the favorites of the 10,000m race, the Hungarians János Parti and István Hernek as well as the then Soviet Genady Bukharin. Rotman won the race being 80 meters ahead of the runner-up rower, Janos Parti.

The 1,000m race followed. This time around as well, Rotman was the favorite. He confirmed, and yet again won the race; with Hungary’s Hernek being Rotman’s runner-up rower. Just like in the 10,000m race, the bronze medal went to Bukharin. The third gold medal won by the Romanian rowers in Melbourne went to Alexe Dumitru and Simion Ismailciuc, in the 1,000m men’s canoe double race.

In 1960 at the Olympics Games in Rome, the Romanian rowers won only one medal, again through Leon Rotman, who walked home with bronze in the 1, 000m men’s canoe single race.

DIPLOMACY According to the spokeswoman for the
Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, Russia will have a proper response
to Bucharest’s decision to declare persona non grata an employee of its embassy
in Romania. Zakharova says that Romania has declared the Russian employee
persona non grata ‘without any reason and under exaggerated pretexts’. The

Inflation — In Romania, the annual inflation rate will have minor fluctuations until the end of September and then it will take a downward path for 3 quarters, according to the National Bank of Romania – BNR. It expects the inflation rate to reach 13.9% in December. On the other hand, the BNR warns that the forecasts regarding the economic activity for next year are significantly revised downwards. According to the Central Bank, next year Romania will experience a significant drop in private consumption, under the influence of the gradual increase in interest rates on the population’s loans and deposits. The government has recently adopted the first budget rectification of 2022, a positive one, which takes into account an economic growth of 3.5%, the budget revenues for the first six months and the budget execution during this period. The Finance Minister, Adrian Caciu, claims that the budget deficit can be kept under control and that the target of 5.84% for the end of the year is achievable. The Fiscal Council, an independent body that analyzes the sustainability of fiscal and budgetary policies, warned that the rectification could lead to a figure exceeding the target deficit of 7% of GDP, because the government allegedly overestimated the receipts and underestimated part of the expenses.

man competed in the kayak races, while two men and one woman took the start in
