    MEETING – Romanian President Klaus Iohannis is today meeting, in Bucharest, with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi. The talks that the latter had on Monday with Romanian officials such as Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, Foreign Minister Luminița Odobescu and Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja focused on the close collaboration between Romania and the IAEA in the development of the civil nuclear program and on the prospects for deepening cooperation in the energy field. The foreign official highlighted Romania’s international profile and its responsible and internationally recognized nuclear policy.

     

    DEFICIT – Romania’s trade balance deficit in the first two months of this year was 4.142 billion euros, by 228.4 million euros smaller than the one recorded in the same period in 2023, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics, published on Tuesday. In February, a trade deficit of 2.174 billion euros was registered. Statistical data show that between January 1 and February 29, 2024, exports totaled 15.042 billion euros, and imports – 19.184 billion euros. Compared to the same period of last year, exports decreased by 0.1%, and imports by 1.2%. In the first two months of 2024, important shares in the structure of exports and imports are held by the product groups: machinery and transport equipment (47.3% for export and 36.3% for import) and other manufactured products (29.1% for export and 27.9% for import). The value of intra-EU27 exchanges of goods in the mentioned period was 11.045 billion euros for shipments and 14.111 billion euros for introductions, representing 73.4% of total exports and 73.6% of total imports.

     

    FISHING – The general ban on fishing began on Tuesday in all natural waters in Romania, according to an order approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of the Environment. Consequently, commercial and recreational activity is to be resumed on June 8, with some exceptions. The ban will last 60 days in the natural fishing habitats, while in the waters that form the state border with Ukraine it will last 45 days, being prohibited from April 16 to May 30. The fishing prohibition period is established depending on the reproduction season of the aquatic fauna, so that it is protected, with a view to sustainable exploitation. During the prohibition period, fishermen can carry out their activity in private lakes.

     

     

    EU – The European Commission has approved an aid scheme for Romanian businesses of approximately 2.5 billion euros. This is intended to protect companies affected by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The European Commission concluded that the reintroduction of support for Romanian companies remains necessary, adequate and proportionate to remedy the significant disturbances in the economy of a member state. The scheme aims to ensure that the affected companies continue to have enough liquidities.

     

    VISIT – The Romanian Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, announced that he will make official visits to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. He hailed what he called Qatar’s direct involvement in rescuing Romanian citizens from the Gaza Strip, the scene of the war between the Israeli army and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, and said he wanted to reiterate his thanks to the Qatari leaders. In the United Arab Emirates, Ciolacu also said, he will hold talks on possible investments in the development of the Constanţa Port (south-east), the TAROM state owned airline and the Bucharest Airport.

     

    CARS – The number of new car registered in Romania went down by 22% in March compared to the same month last year and by more than 17% compared to the previous month, according to the Automobile Manufacturers and Importers Association. The electric car segment experienced a setback of almost 36% compared to the same period in 2023. As regards the market share depending on the engine, gasoline cars occupy the first place, with over 58%, followed by electric ones, with almost 24%, and Diesel, with almost 18%. In March 2024, the best selling 100% electric cars in Romania were Dacia Spring and Tesla

    CONSULTATIONS – Romanias President, Klaus Iohannis, is today having consultations with the parliamentary parties for the designation of a new prime minister, after the resignation of Mihai Tudose, to whom the main ruling party, PSD, has withdrawn its political support. The coalition made up of the Social Democratic Party-the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Romania has proposed the Romanian MEP Viorica Dăncilă for the position of PM. In the case of the right-wing opposition parties, the National Liberal Party and the Save Romania Union have announced they will not endorse this nomination and take into consideration the idea of holding snap elections, whereas the Peoples Movement Party says it will make its own nomination for the position of prime minister.     GOVERNMENT – The weekly government session is today led by the interim prime minister, Mihai Fifor. He has announced earlier today that he will analyse the situation concerning the Romanian Police leadership, following the scandal generated by last weeks arrest of a policeman accused of repeated sexual abuse and paedophilia. Against the backdrop of suspicions that he had allegedly been protected by his superiors and colleagues, a row broke out between interior minister, Carmen Dan, and former prime minister, Mihai Tudose, which ended with the resignation of the prime minister.



    BRUSSELS – The Chief of Staff of the Romanian Army, general Nicolae Ciucă, is today attending in Brussels, for the second day in a row, the NATO Military Committee Conference, in chiefs of defence session. According to a communiqué issued by the Romanian Defence Ministry, the agenda of talks covers such issues as security challenges on the southern flank and the Alliances contribution to the efforts of stabilising it, the mission in Afghan, NATOs role in reforming the security sector in Iraq. The allied military committee convenes twice a year, at the Brussels headquarters, for talks on NATO operations and missions.



    CAR SALES – New car sales in the European Union last year exceeded the threshold of 15 million units for the first time since 2007, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association has today announced. Considered to be a relevant indicator of the economic situation, new car sales have plummeted in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, but they have followed an upward trend, as of the end of 2013. Over 469 thousand Dacia cars were licensed last year, registering a 12% increase as compared to 2016, and the market share of the Romanian make in the European Union reached 3.1% in 2017. The Dacia company was taken over by Renault in 1999. Re-launched in 2005, with the Logan model, Dacia became an important player on the European car market.



    TENNIS – Romanian woman tennis player Irina Begu (no. 40 WTA) has today been defeated by Croatias Petra Martici, no. 81, 6-4, 7-6, in the second round of the Australian Open, the first grand slam tennis tournament of the year. Three other Romanian tennis players will be playing in the second round of the singles, on Thursday. The world number one tennis player and first seeded Simona Halep faces Canadian Eugenie Bouchard (no.112 WTA), Sorana Cîrstea (no.36) will meet Czech Lucie Safarova (no.29), and Ana Bogdan (no.104) plays against Yulia Putintseva of Kazahstan, (no. 54). In the womens doubles, Irina Begu, Monica Niculescu, Raluca Olaru and Sorana Cîrstea have qualified into the second round of the Australian tournament.

    NUCLEAR — The Romanian Foreign Ministry rejected information according to which the United States started to transfer nuclear weapons from Turkey to Romania. EurActiv.com, quoting two independent sources, wrote that the US started the transfer of weapons stationed in Turkey to Romania against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between Washington and Ankara. According to one of the sources, the transfer raises numerous technical and political issues. Another source told EurActiv.com that US- Turkey relations deteriorated so much after the attempted coup in July that Washington no longer trusts Ankara to harbor its nuclear weapons. These are about to be transferred to the airbase in Deveselu, in southern Romania, according to EurActiv.com.



    CAR SALES — Car sales in Romania went up almost 15% in the first seven months of the year compared to the same period last year, according to the Automobile Makers and Importers Association. Production for domestic brand Dacia, made by Renault, went down 6.6%, but continues to be the best selling brand in Romania, with a market share of over 30%. Next come Volkswagen, Skoda and Renault.



    TENNIS — Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, 4th seeded, plays today against Daria Gavrilova of Australia, 47th seeded, in the eighth finals in Cincinnati. Also today, Horia Tecău (Romania) with Jean-Julien Rojer (Holland) play against Dominic Inglot (Great Britain)/Marcin Matkowski (Poland), while Florin Mergea (Romania) paired up with Rohan Bopanna (India) to take on Treat Huey (Filippines), paired up with Maxi Mirnyi (Belarus) in the games coming up in the eighth finals of the mens doubles in the same tournament. At the same time, Monica Niculescu of Romania, pairing up with Vania King of the US, and the French pair Caroline Garcia- Kristina Mladenovic, play in the eight finals of the womens doubles. This tournament is the last ahead of the US Open, the last major competition of the year.



    OLYMPICS — Today is the 13th day of the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and Romania has a single athlete running, Andrei Gag, in the shot put event. After 12 days, Romania still has only four medals in Rio: : the gold obtained by the womens epee team, the silver obtained by the pair Florin Mergea/ Horia Tecau in the mens tennis doubles, and two bronze medals, obtained by Gabriel Sincraian in weightlifting, and by the womens coxed eight rowing team. Romania did not get any medal in gymnastics at this edition, which happens for the first time in the last 44 years.



    FOOTBALL — Romanias football champions Astra Giurgiu play today at home against English team West Ham United, in the qualifiers for the Europa League groups. Vice-champion Steaua Bucharest has secured its place in the groups of the second continental competition. On Tuesday, Steaua was crushed by another major English team, Manchester City, nil to five, in the first leg of the play-offs of the Champions League. Three other Romanian teams, CSMS Iasi, Viitorul Constanta and Pandurii Targu Jiu, were eliminated in the preliminaries of European cups.



    MINORITIES — Debates continue today at the Summer University dedicated to Romanians living abroad. Items on the agenda include preserving Romanian identity in the Hungarian majority counties of Covasna and Harghita, as well as that of Roman Catholics in the region of Moldavia. One other issue raised was that of illegal restoration of property in Transylvania, claimed by Hungarian citizens.



    TRADE — Romanian Minister of the Economy, Costin Borc, receiving in Bucharest Turkish Minister of Development Lutfi Elva, discussed Turkeys role as the premier trade partner for Romania outside the EU. According to a press release, Minister Borc said that the Romanian offer for the Turkish market is generous, and suits its needs. The two offiicials convened to continue these talks this autumn in Ankara, at the meeting of the mixed government commission that supervises economic relations between the two countries. In 2015, Turkey, aside from being the most important trade partner outside the EU for Romania, was the fifth most important such partner overall, the sixth most important export market, and the 9th most important supplier.



    TURKEY — The Turkish economic police this morning ran numerous raids in Istanbul against companies suspected of supporting financially Fethullah Gulen, in exile in the US, accused by the government to be behind the attempted coup last month. 200 arrest warrants were issued in the raids. This is the second such operation this week, mostly against prominent business people. On Wednesday, Turkish PM Binaly Yildirim said that over 40,000 people have been detained after the failed coup, half of them being placed under arrest, facing prosecution. According to the head of government, over 4,200 companies and institutions with ties to Gulen have been shut down. The purges in the army, police, the judiciary and public administration removed 80,000 people from public service, the PM announced.
