    The World Swimming
Championships in Japan’s Fukukoa drew to a close last week. For Romanian swimming,
some swimmers’ performances were dismally below-par, while other swimmers confirmed
their standing. We know all too well all hopes were pinned on world record
holder and European champion in the 100m freestyle event and holder of the European
title in the 200m freestyle event, David Popovici. He failed to step onto a
step of the podium at least once. However, high-diving swimmers Costantin Popovici and Cătălin Preda’s
performance way above par: the two came in 1st and second, respectively.
Reason enough for Radio Romania International to designate Constantin Popovici the
    athlete of the week.

    In this past Tuesday’s
high dives, from the 27-meter-high board, Popovici and Preda came in 1st
and 2nd, respectively, in the first two series. Following in
descending order were Ukrainian Oleksiy Prigorov, Spaniard Carlos Gimeno and French Gary Hunt. Following
two more jumps on Thursday, Constantin Popovici became world champion, with a
total of 472.80 points. Second came in Cătălin Preda, with 438.45 points.
Stepping on the third step of the podium was French diver Gary Hunt, with 426.30
points. Constantin Popovici said the following:

The pressure was quite high, I tried to focus on what I had to do and I eventually
succeeded. Given that it was four years ago when we last had a world
championship, you don’t get the chance to participate in such a contest quite often
and my motivation was I think the strongest of all participants today.

Constantin Popovici was born in Bucharest on October 2nd,
1988. In 2008, in Beijing, Popovici represented Romania in the high-diving event
and came in 23rd in the 10-meter-high board. Popovici retired from competition,
then he resumed his activity, focusing on high diving. In 2019 he was the first
Romanian to have won a contest as part of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. In 2022 Popovici
became a European champion in Rome. At present, he is the world’s best diver. As
regards the prospects of high diving as a sports discipline, Popovici was upbeat
    about it.

There are countries acknowledging this sports discipline as a
discipline with a cleat-cut future, a sports discipline with a lot of potential,
very likely to become an Olympic discipline pretty soon. There are such
countries as Canada or the USA where such dedicated facilities were built and where
they invest in so many people. It may not be an Olympic discipline, yet they invest
because they know that time will come when it will gain such a status, and that
will find themselves having everything at the ready and being also prepared to
win the Olympic medals. Romania has shown a little bit of interest to that end,
but I think there’s a lot more that needs to be done, given that we have the
    world’s best high divers.

    Romanian national football team on
Friday plays an away fixture against Kosovo. Hosted by Pristina’s ”Fadil Vokrri” stadium,
the match counts towards Group I as part of EURO 2024 preliminaries. We recall
that so far Romania has defeated Andorra and Belarus, 2-nil and 2-1, respectively,
and is second-placed in the group, with 6 points, on a par with Switzerland. Head-coach
Edward Iordanescu has called 26 footballers for the pool of regulars. 12 of
them play abroad, while 14 are signed up by domestic clubs. Four of the domestic
championship footballers are signed up by Farul Constanta, while three others
play for the Italian team Pisa, in Serie B.

    The Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry
has issued a series of pieces of advice and recommendations
to Romanian citizens travelling to Pristina for the match pitting Romania against
Kosovo. Therefore, it is recommended that those driving their cars should enter Kosovo
from North Macedonia. The Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry does not recommend entering
Kosovo from Serbia, through the Brnjak and Jarinje checkpoints, because they could
be blocked or closed, should the security situation get worse. The Ministry reminds
everybody the security situation is still unpredictable, especially in northern Kosovo.

Former CFR Cluj head-coach Dan Petrescu has been appointed
head coach of South-Korean football team Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. 55-year-old Petrescu
has worked in Asia before, training teams from Qatar, China and United Arab
Emirates. Over 2018 and 2022, with CFR Cluj, Dan Petrescu won five Romanian champion
    titles.

With 70% of the shares, businessman Dan Sucu became a majority
shareholder of FC Rapid Bucharest football club. With 30% of the shares, Victor
Angelescu remains the second shareholder of the club. Sucu said important sums
would be invested in the team in the coming years. Sucu’ s stated aim was to
support Rapid in their bid to earn a place among the championship’s first three teams. We recall
that in the recently-concluded season, Rapid was 5th-placed according
to Romanian Super league’s Group 2 stage.

Two members of the Romanian delegation competing in the World
Weightlifting Championships, underway in Bogota, Colombia, on Monday walked away with two
more medals for the Romania delegation. Loredana Toma won gold in the combined
total and in the snatch style, in the 71-kilogram category. In the snatch style, Loredana Toma performed a deadlift of 119 kilograms, setting the category’s new
world record. For her noteworthy feat, Radio Romania
International designated Loredana Toma the Athlete of the week.

Loredana’s set target for the competition in Bogota
was the winning of a gold medal. A many-time awardee in World and European championships,
Loredana Toma was designated the Best Athlete of the year in 2021 by the European
Weightlifting Federation. Loredana counted as the favorite athlete in the
71-kilogram category, a recently-introduced category in Olympic competitions,
between the 64 and the 76-kilogram category. Notwithstanding, expectations were
not so high regarding her performance in the snatch style. In the clean-and-jerk style, Loredana Toma came in 4th, with a deadlift of 137
kilograms. In the combined total, Loredana Toma came in 1st,
with 256 kilograms. With 253 kilograms, China’s Tiantian Zeng came in 2nd,

told, the Romanian delegation’s medal tally in Bogota in made of three medals, namely,
the two medals won by Loredana Toma and the silver medal won by Mihaela Cambei in the snatch style, in the 49-kilogram
    category.

    Loredana
Toma was born on May 10, 1995, in the northern Romanian town of Botosani. In

Youth European competitions. In seniors’ competitions, in 2013 and 2014, Loredana
Toma won silver in the 58-kilogram category. Between 2014 and 2016, Loredana
was banned from competition, having tested positive for stanozolol. Beginning with
the European championships in Croatia as of April 2017, Loredana Toma has
dominated the 63-kilogream category, in the snatch as well as in the clean-and-jerk

held in Bucharest in 2018, Loredana Toma yet again won all medals up for grabs. In
2019, at the European Championships in Batumi, Loredana Toma won three gold
medals. In the 64-kilogram category Loredana Toma won two bronze medals, in the
clean-and-jerk style and in the combined total, as part of the World Championships
in Thailand in 2019. Also in the 64-kilogram category, at the European

Weightlifting Federation imposed a one-year ban on the Romanian Federation, on account
of Romanian athletes’ violating the anti-doping regulations on a number of
occasions. Therefore, Loredana Toma could not participate in the 2021 edition
of the Tokyo Olympics, where she was a top-seed athlete in the 64-kilogram category.(EN)

    Athlete of the week

Last weeks attention-grabbing sports event was hosted by Hungarian capital city Budapest. At the recently-held European Wrestling Championship, Romania sent in a strong delegation, mostly made of young wrestlers. The record did meet the expectations, as the Romanians walked home with four medals, of which pride of place holds the gold medal won in the womens version of the competition by Andreea Ana, in the 55-kilogram category. Reason enough for Radio Romania International to designate Andreea Ana the Athlete of the week.

Andreea Anas trail at the European championships was indeed blazing; in the quarterfinals, Andreea overpowered Germanys Anastasia Blayvas, 4-nil. Then in the semifinals, Ana defeated Mariana Drăguţan of the Republic of Moldova, 6-nil. Andreea Anas confrontation in the final was literally dramatic, since the Romanian grabbed a hard-fought 7-5 win against Ukrainian challenger Oleksandra Khomenets. Ana secured her win with a last-gasp attack against her opponent a couple of seconds from time. Also in the womens version of the competition, Alina Vuc and Kriszta Incze won bronze in the 50 and the 65-kilogram category, respectively. In the mens version of the championships, in the Greek-Roman style, Nicu Ojog won silver, in the 87-kilogram category.

Andreea Beatrice Ana was born on November 14, 2000 in the town of Mangalia, in the south-east. In 2018, Andreea won the bronze medal in the World U-23 Championships in Bucharest. In 2019, Andreea Ana walked away with bronze in the European Seniors Championships, also hosted by the Romanian capital city Bucharest. We recall that in Warsaw, in 2021, Andreea also won silver. As a member of the Romanian delegation at the Tokyo Olympics, Andreea Ana came in 16th. Then an all-gold record followed, for Ana, at the World U-23 Championships in Belgrade and the European U-23 Championships in Plovdiv, but also at the European Seniors Championships in Budapest. Andreea Anas most recent gold medal is an absolute first in the history of Romanian womens wrestling.

  • Gold for Romania at the European Wrestling Championship

Gold for Romania at the European Wrestling Championship

Andreea Beatrice Ana has made history in Romanian sports. Aged 21, she became the first Romanian wrestler that won a European title in the senior competition, after defeating in the final the 18 year old Ukrainian Oleksandra Homenet in the 55-kg event, at the European Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Hungary. The Romanian ended the first half 1-0 and had a minor forehead injury, but the fate of the match was decided in the second half. Andreea initially dominated the game, leading 3-0, then her opponent recovered and took the lead 5-3. Seconds before the end of the game, Andreea won 4 points with a takedown. She became a European champion after winning the game 7-5. Her coach, Mihai Stroia was the first to congratulate her. According to the Romanian Sports and Olympic Committee, the results that Andreea Beatrice Ana got in competitions are impressive. A world and European U-23 champion, she previously won four medals in junior competitions and participated in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Born in Mangalia, in the south east, she is now representing CSA Steaua and is one of the athletes who dream of qualifying to the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.

The gold meal won by Andreea Beatrice Ana is not the only notable win at the European Wrestling Championships in Budapest. Alina Vuc, aged 28, won bronze in the 50-kg category. She managed to get over the disappointment in the semifinals, entered the game very determined and focused and defeated German Lisa Ersel in less than two minutes, 4-0. This is the forth European medal for Alina and her second bronze after the one she got in Novi Sad, Serbia in 2017 and the two silver medals snatched in 2016 and 2018 respectively.

Romanian athletes have won numerous medals in the European wrestling championships. Two weeks ago, at the European U23 Championships held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Romania won five medals – one gold, three silver and one bronze. These medals give a moral boost to children, juniors and even seniors, because a continental title encourages all other athletes to give their best in any competition, Razvan Pîrcălabu, head of the Romanian Wrestling Federation said. Results point to a new beginning for Romanian wrestling, he also said. (EE)

Romania’s best performance as part of The
European Rallies’ Championship in the modern era. This
is the rating of Romanian Sports Automobile Federation for this past weekend’s
performance of Simone Tempestini. In the second stage of the European Rallies’ Championship,
the Azores Islands’ Rally, the Italian-born Romanian rally driver came in 4th.
For his notable feat as part of the rally in the Atlantic archipelago, Radio
Romania International has designated Tempestini the Athlete of the Week.

According to Agerpres News Agency, in the
Azores islands rally, Simone Tempestini and his co-driver, Sergiu Itu, also won
two special events, coming in second in other three. The Tempestini / Itu crew,
driving a Skoda Fabia R5, were outclassed by 50 seconds and 4 tenths of a second
by the all-Spanish winning crew made of Efren Llarena and Sara Fernandez, who
clocked 2 hours, 24 minutes, 58 seconds and 3 tenths of a second. The Romanian
crew’s exceptional trail somehow balanced out their unassuming debut in the ongoing
season. We recall that two weeks ago Tempestini and Itu had to abandon the race
in the first stage of the European Rallies Championship held in Portugal, when
they were a mere 10 kilometers away from finishing the race. At the moment, Tempestini
is 8th placed according to the general rankings, with 23 points. With 45 points, Portuguese driver Armindo Araujo is at the top of the table. Following in descending order are Spaniards Efren
Llarena and Nil Solans, with 42 and 32 points, respectively.

    Many-time
Romania’s national rally champion Simone Tempestini was born on August 12,
1994, in Treviso, Italy. He came to Romania with his father, Marco Tempestini, who was hired as a professional rally driver as a
member of the Cluj-based Napoca Rally Academy team. It was also with Napoca
Rally Academy team that, while still a junior competitor, Simone made his debut
in 2009. In 2016 Simone became a world juniors’ champion. Simone was granted
the Romanian citizenship also in 2016.

they were a mere 10 kilometers away from finishing the race.

    Romanian national women’s
handball team has advanced to the main group stage as part of the ongoing World
    Women’s Handball Championship. Head-coach Adrian Vasile’s trainees were 2nd
placed in Group C, with two wins and one defeat on their record sheet. In this past Friday’s fixture, the Romanians trounced
the national team of Iran, 39-11. Romania succeeded another win, against minnows
Kazakhstan, 38 to 17. However, one of the world title hopefuls, the national
squad of Norway, thrashed Romania, 33-22.

    It
was only during the first fifteen minutes of play that the Romanians measured
up to the standard of their opponents, so much so that they even had a brief lead
during the game. However, at halftime, Norway had already secured a 17-11
advantage. In the second half, the Norwegians had the upper hand on the court,
and that was proved by the fact that the Romanians went 11 goals down. World-acclaimed
Romanian handballer Cristina Neagu’s absence made the difference during the
Romanian team’s attacking bouts. A lot less efficient without Neagu, the
Romanian squad’s offensive lineup was unable to overpower Norway’s very strong
    defensive game.

    Romania
has advanced to Main Group II, with 2 points on their record sheet. On Thursday,
Romania goes against the Netherlands. On Saturday, our national squad plays Puerto
Rico, while this coming Monday, the Romanians are pitted against Sweden. Qualification
to the World Championships’ quarterfinals is secured by coming in 1st
or 2nd in the group stage. Realistically, that is something hard to
come by, since the Netherlands are the defending world champions, while Sweden
came in 4th at this year’s edition of the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

    Romania has failed
to qualify to the Olympics. At the previous edition of the world championship,
in 2019, Romania came in 12th.
