    February 18, 2025 UPDATE

DIPLOMACY Romania’s interim president, Ilie Bolojan, said on Tuesday at the annual meeting of the heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Bucharest that Romania is a democratic state, which continues to take action to strengthen its institutions and people’s confidence in them. He promised a free, fair and transparent election process in the upcoming presidential election. “Romania has a ruling coalition, which ensures the country’s stability”, the president said, and added that Romania’s foreign policy will stay on its normal course as an EU and NATO member with a strategic partnership with the USA, while also being open to cooperation with all the partners that share the same values and principles. According to Bolojan, Russia’s aggression in neighbouring Ukraine must stop, and a ceasefire followed by just and sustainable peace is a goal that must be pursued not only by the parties involved, but also by the entire international community.  Bolojan went on to say that support for the ex-soviet, Romanian-speaking Republic of Moldova is a duty and this state’s resilience must be strengthened ahead of the parliamentary election due in 2025.

RIYADH The first high-level US-Russia meeting in recent years took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday. Moscow’s officials said the talks were “serious” and “positive,” while the American side announced that two teams would be set up to initiate negotiations to stop the war in Ukraine, Reuters and AFP report. While the delegations led by Marco Rubio and Sergei Lavrov were discussing in Riyadh, the Russian foreign ministry announced that it wanted NATO to revoke the decision taken at the 2008 summit in Bucharest regarding Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance. The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he would not recognise the outcome of Russian-American negotiations held in the absence of Kyiv, and European leaders convening in an emergency meeting in Paris on Monday promised to carry on their military support for Ukraine, while stepping up the strengthening of their own defence. Only a few European leaders were invited to the informal EU summit organised by president Emmanuel Macron, namely the German Chancellor, the Polish, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Danish and British prime ministers, as well as the president of the European Council, the head of the European Commission and the NATO Secretary General. France plans to host a second meeting on Ukraine and European security on Wednesday, Reuters reports. According to diplomatic sources, Norway, Canada, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Romania, Sweden and Belgium are invited to take part.

JUDICIARY The Romanian justice minister Radu Marinescu Tuesday had a meeting with the Japanese ambassador to Bucharest, Takashi Katae. The two officials discussed, among other things, ways to find better solutions for judicial cooperation regarding Romanian nationals imprisoned in Japan. According to a news release issued by the justice ministry, Radu Marinescu appreciates the excellent judicial cooperation between the two states, while at the same time reaffirming Romania’s strong commitment to develop close institutional collaboration in the future. Bilateral relations between Romania and Japan were elevated to a strategic partnership on March 7, 2023. Last year, a Declaration of Cooperation between the justice ministries of the two countries was also signed, making Romania the first European Union member state to sign such a declaration with Japan, the news release also states.

FOOTBALL The former Romanian international player Cristian Chivu was appointed coach of the Italian football team Parma on Tuesday, the club announced on its home page. For Chivu, this will be the first coaching experience at a senior level, after having trained several junior teams at Internazionale Milano, where he played between 2007 and 2014 and where he concluded his career as a footballer at the age of 34 due to recurring injuries. In the 2009-2010 season, under the Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, he won the Italian championship and Cup with Inter, as well as the Champions League. At Parma, Chivu will coach the Romanian international players Dennis Man and Valentin Mihăilă. The team is in 18th place out of 20 (relegation-threatened) and Chivu’s debut as a coach in Serie A will take place on February 22, on home turf, against Bologna. Another Italian team in Serie A, Genoa, is owned by the Romanian businessman Dan Şucu, who is also the major shareholder in Rapid Bucharest. (AMP)

VISIT Preserving the memory of the victims of wars and totalitarianism, as well as of those persecuted for their faith, for the search for justice and freedom, is a duty and a form of justice, said President Klaus Iohannis on Sunday, in the German Federal Parliament, during a ceremony on the Day of Commemoration of the victims of war and dictatorship. He also highlighted the importance of a stronger and more united European Union, adapted to the challenges of the future. Germany, said President Iohannis, will continue to find in Romania a partner deeply committed to European values, ready to work together to strengthen the Union and for freedom and democracy to be protected and accepted both in the EU and globally. During a visit to Berlin between November 15 and 18, president Klaus Iohannis had talks with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier about security and the support that Romania and Germany will continue to give to Ukraine. The agenda of consultations with Chancellor Olaf Scholz also included Romania’s full Schengen accession.

EU Romania’s PM Marcel Ciolacu has a working visit to Brussels scheduled for Monday. He will have meetings with NATO’s new secretary general, Mark Rutte, with the president-elect of the European Council, António Costa and with the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. Marcel Ciolacu is accompanied by a governmental delegation which includes the foreign minister Luminiţa Odobescu and the defence minister Angel Tîlvăr. The visit to Brussels comes ahead of the start of a new EU institutional cycle, following the elections held this June, and ahead of the endorsement of the new Strategic Agenda for 2024-2029.

OBITUARY The former gymnastics coach Bela Karoly died at the age of 82. The cause of death has not been made public, but he was known to have had various health problems over the past few years. Bela Karoly coached the world-famous Nadia Comăneci, who got the first “perfect 10” in the history of the Olympic Games in Montreal, in 1976, followed by further outstanding performances. Karoly fell out of favour with the communist regime when he criticised the arbitration at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. A year later he defected to the US, where he came to coach a number of American gymnasts, some of whom became Olympic or world champions. Karoly and his wife chose to stay away from the public eye, after being targeted by allegations regarding the brutal methods he used in training.

FORESTRY CODE Romania’s new Forestry Code, aimed at preventing wood theft, is waiting for the green light from Parliament’s specialist committees before being discussed in the Chamber of Deputies, the decision-making body in this respect. The draft legislation still requires positive reports from the committees on agriculture and legal affairs, after being approved by the committee on environment. Several amendments have been introduced in the process, concerning among other things the planting of green areas around cities, access to all forests on foot or by bicycle and pre-emptive rights to top-quality materials for Romanian furniture producers. The new law will punish theft by seizure of the wood and of the vehicle used in the theft. A National Forestry Council will also be set up, to monitor compliance with ethical and professional standards among forestry staff. The new Forestry Code is a benchmark in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, and the government intends to have it endorsed by December.

SAVINGS Nearly three-quarters of Romanians are concerned with price increases, and say they will spend less these holidays, according to an EU-wide survey. Moreover, some economists predict a complicated year ahead and call on people to save money. Apart from simple methods like setting a monthly budget and strictly monitoring expenses, experts have a savings solution for low-income categories as well. The Centre for Banking Dispute Settlement recommends the 52-week method, in which a person saves as much money as the number of the week in question, to reach EUR 277 during a year. Nearly 40% of Romanian consumers plan to spend between EUR 100 and 200 for their Christmas shopping. (AMP)

    Romania at the Olympic Games

    The
history of Romanian gymnastics is dominated by the personality and achievements
of Nadia Comăneci. However, since that moment on, a lot of tremendously
talented athletes followed in Nadia’s footsteps, some of them with remarkable
results. This is the case with Daniela Silivaș, an Olympic champion in 3 events
    in Seoul, 1988.

    She
was born in 1970, in Deva, and was one of the first gymnasts trained at the
Deva Olympic Centre opened in 1978. Her first coach was professor Ioan Cărpinișan.
In 1980, Daniela Silivaș was already the winner of the national school
championships. In 1982 she won the gold in the all-around, beam, floor and
vault events of the national junior championship.

    There
followed a triumphant international debut, with Daniela Silivas winning the
all-around and floor events of the Junior World Gymnastics Championships in
Japan. In ’84, at the Junior European Championship in Rimini, Italy, she
walked home with the gold medal in the beam event and the silver in the uneven
    bars and floor.

    Daniela
Silivas moved on to become the world leading gymnast of the late ’80s. In the
World Championships in Montreal in ’85, she won the gold in the beam event,
while 2 years later, at the European Championships in Moscow, she won the gold
in the all-around event, beam, floor and uneven bars, and the silver in the
vault event. That same year, at the World Championship in Rotterdam, she took
home the gold in the uneven bars and the floor event, and won the world title with
    Romania’s team.

    1988
saw the only Olympic Games participation in her career, in Seoul. She won 3
gold medals on that occasion, in the uneven bars, beam and floor, and 2 silver
medals, in the all-around and in the team competitions.

    The
last major competition she took part in was the 1989 World Championship, held
in Stuttgart. Once again, she won the uneven bars, beam and floor events, and
added another silver medal in the team competition.

    After
her retirement from competitions, Daniela Silivaș settled in the US, where she
    is a gymnastics coach.

Edward Iordănescu has been appointed head-coach
of Romanian national football team. The President of the Romanian Football
Federation, Razvan Burleanu, made the announcement on Tuesday. Burleanu also stated the new head-coach has been tasked with getting the national squad regain its position among
the European football elite teams. Razvan Burleanu firmly believed Iordanescu had
the qualities and skills required to rebuild Romania’s national team from
scratch. The Romanian top-ranking sports official added that Iordanescu’s top
priority was to have the national squad qualify for Euro 2024.

    Here is what Edward
Iordanescu has recently told a press conference.

    Edward Iordanescu:

    Honestly,
as far as I am concerned, the joy, the pride and the enthusiasm I feel are
literally overwhelming. By all means, when you get to represent the Romanians
and Romania, that also means a huge responsibility, and I am prepared for that.
I am dead positive that, jointly with the lads, with the Federation’s management
and, of course, with the support we can get from our fans and with the
confidence we can get from you all, we can build a team we can yet again be proud
of, a team that can arise and shine so we can deliver, in order to meet everyone’s
    expectations.

    The Romanian national
team had been without a head-coach for almost a year. We recall that on November 24, 2021, the outgoing head-coach Mirel Radoi announced he did not intend to carry on with his job any longer,
since the national team had failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup playoffs. Radoi
had been appointed the Romanian national squad’s head-coach on November 26,
2019. Back then Radoi filled in a job vacancy created by Cosmin Contra’s
    departure.

    43-year-old Edward
Iordănescu had been free of contract also from November 2021. We recall that
back then he gave up on his job as a FCSB head-coach by mutual consent. Edi Iordanescu
was also a head-coach for CFR Cluj, ȚSKA Sofia, Astra Giurgiu or Gaz Metan
Mediaş. His record includes the winning of the domestic title with CFR Cluj, in
2021, and the winning of two editions of the Supercup, in 2019 and in 2021.

  • End of year sport rankings

    End of year sport rankings

The year end is, in all fields, a good opportunity to take a moment and look back, at both accomplishments and failures, and to reward performers. It is the case in Romanian sports as well, where specialist federations as well as regional, local and club teams are drawing up their final standings for the year.

Designated the best Romanian footballer of the year is George Puscas, who currently plays for the British side Reading. He was one of the authors of Romanias qualification into the semi-finals of the European youth championship, and is one of the most efficient Romanian strikers playing abroad. In the same event that rewarded Puscas as the best player, namely the Romanian Football Gala, Razvan Lucescu was awarded the title of best Romanian coach of the year 2019. He won the Greek football championship and Cup trophies with his team, PAOK Thessaloniki, and then he moved to the Saudi side Al Hilal to win the Asian Champions League.

Florinel Coman, a striker for FCSB, tops the charts of the Romanian League I players, according to data made public by InStat, quoted by Agerpres news agency. InStat came up with an index that assesses football performances based on objective criteria, and according to which Florinel Coman, with 314 points, is followed by Constantin Budescu, playing for Astra Giurgiu, and by Adrian Paun of CFR Cluj, both with 307 points. The best score in this ranking is 401, for Barcelona star player Lionel Messi, who has recently been awarded the 6th golden shoe trophy in his career.

Sabre athlete Bianca Pascu, a member of Dinamo Bucharest club, was designated the best Romanian fencer of the year 2019. Her main accomplishment this year was the bronze medal won in the World Championships held in Budapest, Hungary, in July. In that competition, Bianca was the only member of the Romanian delegation to come home with a medal.

The Romanian-born Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu, number 5 in the world and winner of the 2019 US Open, was unanimously voted the Athlete of the Year in Canada by a panel of 30 sports journalists, in what counted as an absolute first for a tennis player.

The soap opera around who is going to be the new coach of Romania’s national football squad continues. The manager of Dinamo Bucharest, Cosmin Contra, is the main favorite to taking over the position of head coach. If Contra leaves Dinamo Bucharest, the current manager of FC Voluntari Claudiu Niculescu stands the highest chances to be appointed at the helm of FC Dinamo. With FC Voluntari, Niculescu has won two trophies this year, Romania’s Cup and the Supercup. Claudiu Niculescu is very popular among Dinamo’s fans, given that he boasts no less than 150 caps for Dinamo Bucharest.

However, the Sports Gazette has mentioned there is a chance for a German coach to be Dinamo’s new head coach. The names that have been mentioned were those of Lothar Matthäus şi Stefan Effenberg, two former top-notch footballers. Matthäus is more experienced as a football manager, having been at the helm of teams such as Rapid Vienna and Partizan Belgrade, or the national teams of Hungary and Bulgaria. So far, Effenberg has only been football manager for Paderborn.

In other news from domestic football, the mayor of Craiova Mihai Genoiu has said the municipality will directly manage the city’s new football stadium, in the first stage. The other municipality departments, capable of administering the stadium, be they administration companies or public limited companies are tax-paying entities, and for an establishment the size of the new stadium the tax would be very high.

The mayor of Craiova has said he talked with the mayor of Cluj, Emil Boc. The latter told him the firm the Municipality had set up to manage the Cluj Arena was unable to cover the expenses, and in one year alone it was engulfed by the debts they made. Mihai Genoiu went on to say that in Bucharest the municipality has been in charge of the National Arena for quite a few months now, taking it over from the private firm that had managed the stadium.
