    Romanias national water polo side is this weekend playing in the preliminaries of the European Championships in Slovenia. Our athletes will be taking on Switzerland in the qualifying group D on Friday. A day later, our side will be up against Finland and they will be playing the host country on Sunday.



    The games of one of the qualifying groups for the womens European Water polo Championships are hosted by Otopeni, a town close to Romanias capital Bucharest. Romania will play Sweden on Friday, when Turkey will be up against Switzerland. On Saturday, Sweden will play Turkey and Romania will take on Switzerland. Sunday will see the last two matches, Switzerland versus Sweden and Romania versus Turkey.



    This weekend, the Romanian swimmer David Popovici, world and European champion in the 100 and 200 meter freestyle races will be running in the Sette Colli Trophy international competition, which is expected to bring 500 swimmers from 30 countries to Rome. For Popovici, this will be the last contest before the World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, due to take place over July 13th and 30th.



    Poland will this weekend see the European Games, a multi-sports competition, where Romania is being represented by 150 athletes. On Thursday, Ştefan Comănescu won the first medal for Romania, bronze in the 67 kilogram category of the karate contest.



    On Saturday, Romanias under 21 football side will be playing Ukraine in Bucharest in their second match counting towards the European Under-21 Championship due in Romania and Georgia. On Wednesday, in the first game of Group B, the team coached by Emil Sandoi conceded a nil-three defeat to Spain. Our footballers will be playing Croatia on Tuesday.

    PROTESTS According to Romanian president Klaus Iohannis, protests are normal in
    functional democracies, but he underlined that violence, extremism and
    xenophobia are intolerable and completely unacceptable. The president has said
    that he understands that people are discontented after a year of restrictions
    but has reiterated that these measures are the only ones that can keep the
    Covid-19 pandemic at bay. He made an appeal to the authorities in charge to
    step up their dialogue with the people, explaining to them why such measures
    need to be implemented and which is their effectiveness. The president’s
    statement comes after a second day of protests in Bucharest and several other
    big cities across Romania. Some of these protests turned violent. The country’s
    Prime Minister Florin Citu said that after one year of restrictions, the
    citizens are entitled to protest, but these protests must be done under the
    law. According to Marcel Ciolacu, president of the opposition PSD, people took
    to the streets out of despair, being fed up with poverty and the ongoing
    crisis. In his opinion, a solution might be to reconsider the restrictions
    implemented. Interior Minister Lucian Bode has said that over 12 hundred
    protesters have been fined nationwide. 12 gendarme troops were wounded in the
    protest in Bucharest on Monday. Over 180 people have been investigated by the
    police in relation to the protest.








    VACCINE Over
    6,200 new Covid-19 cases were reported on Tuesday in Romania, out of 30,000
    tests. A record 1,405 patients are in intensive care, and 175 people died. The
    total number of infections since the start of the pandemic in Romania is over
    946,000, and the death toll is 23,400. Meanwhile, the vaccine rollout continues in
    Romania, with some 2 million
    people having received at least one dose so far and nearly half of them having
    also got the booster. The coordinator of the vaccination rollout
    programme, physician Valeriu Gheorghita on Tuesday announced the vaccination
    rollout in April would also involve family physicians. Gheorghita also said
    that foreigners residing in Romania would be able to schedule their vaccination
    online after April 10th. Romania is to receive over 3.3 million
    vaccine doses in April, when, according to Prime Minister Florin Citu, the
    vaccination rate is expected to reach 100,000 people per day. New measures are
    in place to contain the epidemic. In areas with infection rates above 4 per
    thousand, a weekend curfew is in place between 8 pm and 5 am, and shops must close
    at 6 pm. Where the infection rate is over 7.5 per thousand, these measures are
    applied throughout the week.






    BSEC Romanian diplomat Lazar Comanescu
    has been appointed Secretary General of the Organisation of the Black Sea
    Economic Cooperation BSEC. According to Romania’s Foreign Minister, Bogdan
    Aurescu, the appointment represents a success of the Romanian diplomacy and a
    proof of Romania’s commitment to the Black Sea cooperation. Comanescu served as
    a Foreign Minister, as Romania’s ambassador in Germany between 2009 and 2015
    and head of Romania’s representation with the EU from 2001 to 2008. At present
    BSEC consists of 13 member states: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria,
    Georgia, Greece, the Republic of Moldova, North Macedonia, Romania, the Russian
    Federation, Turkey, Ukraine and Serbia. In 2020 Romania assured the BSEC’s
    rotating presidency for the sixth time since its foundation in 1992.








    ASSISTANCE The Romanian government is
    to provide a 150 thousand Euros assistance package to Syrian refugees in 2021
    and will fulfill the multi-annual pledges assumed, Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan
    Aurescu has announced. According to a communiqué issued by the Foreign Ministry
    in Bucharest, Aurescu delivered a speech over the future of Syria and the
    region during a video conference staged by the EU and UNO on Tuesday.

    President Klaus Iohannis filed a motion in Constitutional Court in Romania to declare unconstitutional the law introduced by Social Democrats that slashes 102 non-fiscal taxes, among them the public radio and TV fees. The head of state claims that the law violates separation of powers and legal principles governing the relationship between Parliament and the government, the role of the government, and the national budget. In a debate on the impact of the elimination of the public radio and TV fees, the president emphasized that the fees paid by citizens for public radio and television are a guarantee of public service. Klaus Iohannis criticized the way in which the bill was rushed through, and the fact that there was no public debate regarding this issue. He specified that he received requests to block the law from international bodies. The sponsor of the law, the head of the Social Democratic Party, Liviu Dragnea, said that the funding of the two institutions would not be affected, and that their management has to be depoliticized, ensuring editorial independence.



    The Romanian economy has grown in the third quarter of this year by 4.4% as compared to the same period in 2015, and by 0.6% as compared to the previous quarter, according to the National Institute of Statistics (NIS). The data indicates a significant slowdown of economic growth as compared to the second quarter, when Romanias GDP went up 6% compared to the same period last year. The IMF expects the total economic growth for 2016 to be 5%, and the latest forecasts by the European Commission shows that the growth in the real GDP in Romania is among the fastest in Europe, by 5.2% in 2016, 3.9% in 2017, and 3.6% in 2018. The Commission, however, reiterated its warning on Romania going above the 3% deficit threshold due to tax cuts and increased public wage spending.



    Romanian Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu pleaded for continued reforms to be carried out by the neighboring Republic of Moldova, while taking part in the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, saying that the EU should continue its engagement with the authorities in Chisinau. His statements come after Sundays presidential elections in the ex-Soviet republic, won by pro-Russian Socialist Igor Dodon. The opposing candidate, pro-European Maia Sandu, said that elections were badly run. Thousands took to the streets in Chisinau to protest, claiming the elections had been rigged.     In Romania, the head of the Permanent Election Authority, Ana Maria Patru, is under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Directorate for money laundering and influence peddling. She has been the head of the Authority since 2012. For two years, between 2005 and 2007, she acted as coordinating director of the Southern Regional Branch of the Permanent Election Authority. Since October 2013 she has been the vice-president of the world association of election bodies.



    Former star athletes Gabriela Szabó and Mihai Covaliu run today for president of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee. Szabó, multiple Olympic, world and European champion in track, was appointed in 2013 ambassador of Romanian tourism, and one year later she came to head the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Her opponent, Mihai Covaliu, is Olympic and world champion in fencing, coaches the Romanian national mens saber team, and is head of the Romanian Fencing Federation. In Rio at the Olympics, Romanias womens epee team won the only gold medal for the country.



    US President Barack Obama went on his last foreign tour before ending his term. He will be visiting Greece, Germany and Peru, where he will be taking part in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit. According to Radio Romanias correspondent in Washington, Obama will try to reassure European allies of the future of NATO, as president elect Donald Trump has them worried. In his first post-election press conference, Obama warned Trump that it will be hard to pull out of agreements such as the Paris climate accord and the nuclear deal with Iran, or take rash action against illegal immigration.



    Romania’s national football team in Grozny today takes on Russia, in a friendly game ahead of the World Football Championship in 2018. We recall that after the dismantling of the Soviet Union in 1991, Romania had taken on Russia only once, in 2008, when our national squad grabbed a 3-nil win. This past Friday on home turf, Romania sustained a 3-nil defeat against Poland, and diminished its chances to go through to the World Championship in 2018. With only 5 points on its record sheet, Romania is 4th-placed in preliminary Group E, where Poland is at the top of the table with 10 points, Montenegro is the runner-up team with 7, while Denmark is 3rd placed, with 6 points. Romania’s next scheduled fixture will be played in March, when the national squad takes on Denmark.

    Der rumänische Staatspräsident Klaus Iohannis ist am Freitag in Bukarest mit der Hohen Vertreterin der EU für Außenpolitik, Federica Mogherini, zusammengekommen. Zu den Gesprächsthemen zählten Syrien und die Republik Moldau. Als Schlussfolgerung galt, dass die militärische Option keine Lösung für die Syrien-Krise sei. Die EU wolle ein Partner sein, der an den Verhandlungen teilnimmt. Über Moldau sagte Iohannis, die EU verstehe, dass Rumänien ein legitimes und besonderes Interesse daran habe, dass das Land auf seinem proeuropäischen Kurs bleibt. Die Hohe Vertreterin der EU für Außenpolitik und der rumänische Präsident vereinbarten eine gemeinsame Position für die Unterstützung der Moldau. Weitere Themen waren die Östliche Partnerschaft, die Lage im Süden der EU, sowie die Planung und die bessere Koordinierung der europäischen Verteidigung.



    Außenminister Lazăr Comănescu hat sich einmal mehr für den Beitritt Rumäniens zum Schengener Raum stark gemacht. Im Rahmen eines Gesprächs mit der Hohen Vertreterin der EU für Außenpolitik Mogherini bestätigte der Chefdiplomat die Bereitschaft Rumäniens, die EU-Außengrenze vor dem neuen Sicherheitskontext abzusichern. Der ursprünglich für 2011 anberaumte Beitritt Rumäniens zum grenzkontrollfreien Raum war wiederholt aufgeschoben worden. Westliche Partner räumen die Erfüllung aller technischen Beitrittskriterien zwar regelmäßig ein, verweisen jedoch teilweise auf die Korruption in den rumänischen Institutionen.



    Der Botschafter der Vereinigten Staaten in Bukarest, Hans Klemm, hat in Klausenburg auf die Schwerpunkte der US-Botschaft in Rumänien hingewiesen. Diese seien die Förderung der Sicherheit, der Demokratie und der transparenten Regierungsweise, so Klemm bei einer Konferenz zum Thema Innovation in der Technologie, die in der siebenbürgischen Stadt organisiert wurde. Der Wohlstand der Bürger müsse die Behörden vorrangig beschäftigen, dafür seien die Entwicklung und die Unterstützung des Unternehmertums von größter Bedeutung, sagte der US-Botschafter noch. Rumänien und die USA verbindet im Rahmen der NATO eine strategische Partnerschaft.



    Premierminister Dacian Cioloş hat am Freitag an den Feierlichkeiten anlässlich der Empfangnahme der ersten 6 Mehrzweckjäger vom Typ F-16 Fighting Falcon teilgenommen. Das Rumänische Verteidigungsministerium hatte 12 Kampflugzeuge aus Portugal gekauft. Die sechs Flugmaschinen wurden Ende September von dem portugisieschen Stützpunkt Monte Real übernommen. Rumänien hat beschlossen, seine Luftwaffe zu modernisieren. und die MiG 21 Lancer, deren Betriebszeit schon 2013 auszulaufen begann, zu ersetzen.



    Verteidigungsminister Mihnea Motoc und seine niederländische Amtskollegin Jeanine Hennis haben am Donnerstag im Rahmen eines Sicherheitsforums in Bukarest eine Absichtserklärung über die Entwicklung der bilateralen militärischen Kooperation unterschrieben. Die Migration, die NATO-Missionen und die Sicherheit im Schwarzmeer-Raum im Kontext der Intensivierung der militärischen Präsenz Russlands in der Region waren einige der Themen, die auf der Agenda des Treffens standen. Die zwei Verteidigungsminister diskutierten über die Beteiligung von niederländischen Soldaten an der multinationalen NATO-Brigade, die in Rumanien funktionieren wird. Deutschland werde sich mit Generalstabsoffizieren an der multinationalen NATO-Brigade beteiligen; ferner hätte auch Bulgarien die Teilnahme mit bis zu 400 Militärs an der multinationalen NATO-Brigade bestätigt und Polen werde sich mit einer Kompagnie daran beteiligen. Rumänien werde sich seinerseits mit einer Kompagnie an der entsprechenden NATO-Brigade in Polen beteiligen und dabei mit einer US-Einheit zusammenarbeiten.

    Le ministre roumain des Affaires étrangères, Lazar Comanescu, a participé à Varsovie à la trilatérale Roumanie-Pologne-Turquie organisée en préambule au sommet de l’Alliance prévu le mois prochain. Les trois responsables politiques ont passé en revue les menaces actuelles à l’adresse de la sécurité régionale, mettant en évidence l’importance de la défense collective et le renforcement du flanc oriental de l’OTAN.

    A cette occasion, M. Comanescu a exprimé sa conviction que les résultats du prochain sommet otanien ne feraient que confirmer une fois de plus l’importance de l’unité et de la cohésion des alliés face aux actuels défis sécuritaires quelle que soit leur nature et leur provenance. Et lui d’ajouter que la présence de l’Alliance sur le territoire des alliés du flanc Est reste prioritaire puisqu’elle met en lumière la complémentarité des dimensions septentrionale et méridionale de ce flanc. Lazar Comanescu: «Nous sommes parfaitement conscients du rôle essentiel et de l’attention que l’on doit prêter à la partie Nord du flanc Est de l’OTAN, mais sa partie orientale et méridionale ne pourrait pas être négligée non plus, puisque les menaces à l’adresse de la sécurité et de la stabilité viennent notamment de ces régions très proches de la Roumanie. Il suffit de penser à la mer Noire, à la Crimée ou encore à l’Ukraine».

    D’autre part, le responsable roumain a insisté sur l’importance stratégique de la mer Noire dans l’actuel contexte sécuritaire euro-atlantique et a plaidé en faveur d’un renforcement de la coopération et de la coordination entre l’OTAN et l’UE d’une part, et l’OTAN et ses partenaires orientaux de l’autre. Lazar Comanescu :«Nous avons tous convenu sur l’importance et la nécessité qu’un sommet comme celui de Varsovie débouche sur des décisions censées contribuer réellement au renforcement des capacités otaniennes de faire face aux défis actuels. Et je pense à la nécessité d’une présence encore plus robuste dans la région des structures terrestres et aériennes de l’OTAN. Par ailleurs, il est très important aussi bien pour la Roumanie que pour tout l’espace euro-atlantique qu’un cadre de coopération soit mis en place pour une meilleure présence de l’OTAN dans la région de la mer Noire».

    Initiées dans un premier temps à Bucarest, en 2012, les consultations trilatérales roumano-turco-polonaises reposent sur la convergence des approches des trois pays vis-à-vis de plusieurs thèmes d’intérêt stratégique. La réunion a un caractère informel, non institutionnalisé, et se propose d’encourager les échanges d’idées et la collaboration au sein de l’OTAN.

    CAR CRASH — Dan Condrea, manager of Hexi Pharma, the company at the center of the hospital disinfectant scandal, died on Sunday in a car crash. The police have not ruled out the possibility of suicide. The investigation was taken over by the prosecutors assigned to the High Court of Cassation and Justice. At the same time, the crisis in the healthcare system will be next week on the agenda of the Higher Defense Council.



    STATE VISIT — Romanian PM Dacian Ciolos started on Sunday a four day working visit to the United States. His main objective is to develop further economic cooperation as part of the Strategic Partnership between the two countries. According to Radio Romanias correspondent, todays agenda includes a meeting in Detroit with the management of Ford automotive company and a visit to the company R&D center. The Prime Minister will further hold talks in Washington with VP Joe Biden and the secretaries of agriculture, commerce and energy. As part of the visit, the premier and his delegation will also be meeting members of the Romanian community and Romanian businesspeople.



    COUNCIL — Romanian Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu, takes part today in the Council for Foreign Affairs. On the agenda in Brussels are the EU regional strategy for Syria and Iraq, the anti-ISIS strategy, and migration, according to the Romanian Foreign Ministry. At a working lunch, the ministers will discuss the EUs global strategy, in preparation for the European Council of June 2016. Comanescu will also be attending the meeting of foreign ministers of EU countries with their counterparts in the Eastern Partnership, made up of the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus), where talks will focus on achieving the aims set at the summit in May 2015.



    CANNES — Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, winner of the Palme dOr in 2007, won last night in Cannes the best director award for his film Baccalaureate (Graduation). The feature length film tells the story of a small town physician who has to settle an incident involving his daughter right before her graduation exam. Another Romanian director, Bogdan Mirica, won the film critic award for his movie Dogs. The Palme dOr went to Ken Loach for I, Daniel Blake, and the Grand Prize went to Its Only the End of the World by Xavier Dolan. Well have more after the news.



    ANTI-CORRUPTION — In Bucharest, representatives of police and anti-corruption organizations from 9 countries, along with representatives of the EC and the European Health Fraud and Corruption Network are debating for two days investigating corruption in the healthcare system. The meeting is hosted by the Romanian National Anti-corruption Directorate. The purpose of the working group is to offer a framework for dialog, discussing case studies and best practices in fighting corruption in the medical field. Among the participating countries are Austria, Germany, Moldova, Serbia and Spain.

    BUKAREST: Ministerpräsident Cioloş wird ab Sonntag zu einem viertägigen Besuch in den USA erwartet. Dabei soll er allen voran mit US-Vizepräsident Joseph Biden zusammentreffen. Laut einer Mitteilung der Regierung soll Cioloş ferner mit weiteren hohen Amtsträgern der USA, Vertretern der Unternehmen, sowie mit Mitgliedern der rumänischen Gemeinde um Washington zusammenkommen. Das erklärte Ziel des Besuchs sei die Hervorhebung der erfolgreichen strategischen Partnerschaft mit den USA, hei‎ßt es in der Mitteilung noch. Allerdings habe die USA-Reise von Ministerpräsident Cioloş auch eine ökonomische Dimension.



    BUKAREST: Rumänien unterstützt die Festigung der Ostflanke der NATO. Dies bestätigte Au‎ßeniminister Lazar Comanescu im Rahmen eines Au‎ßenministertreffens der NATO-Staaten in Brüssel. Der Chefdiplomat betonte dabei die Bedeutung einer erhöhten Aufmerksamkeit für die Entwicklung der Sicherheit am Schwarzen Meer. Er plädierte für eine stärkere Unterstützung der NATO für die Partner des Militärbündnisses in der Region: die Ukraine, die Moldau und Georgien. Die NATO-Au‎ßenminister wollen indes ihre Mission in Afghanistan auch nach 2016 fortsetzen. Comănescu sagte in diesem Zusammenhang, dass Rumänien einer der grö‎ßten beitragenden Staaten im Rahmen der internationalen Allianz in Afghanistan gewesen sei und es nach wie vor bleiben werde.



    BUKAREST: In der rumänischen Hauptstadt wird in der Nacht zum Sonntag die lange Nacht der Europäischen Museen zelebriert. Das Publikum kann zu diesem Anlass die meisten Museen in Bukarest kostenlos besichtigen. Es sind für diese Ausgabe hunderte von Sonderveranstaltungen geplant, die in Museen, Kunstgallerien und alternativen Räumen stattfinden — Ausstellungen, Filmvorführungen, Konzerte und Konferenzen. Zum ersten Mal wird in Bukarest und anderen Gro‎ßstädten wie Cluj und Iasi ein Audio-Video-Guide als App für Handys angeboten. Die lange Nacht der Museen findet in Tausenden von Museumseinrichtungen in Europa zum bereits 12. Mal statt.

    BRATISLAVA: Vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Sicherheitslage gibt es keine Alternative als ein starkes Europa, mit geschützten Außengrenzen und einem konsolidierten Schengener Raum. Das erklärte der rumänische Außenminister Lazar Comanescu am Freitag in Bratislava. Bei einem Treffen mit seinem slowakischen Gegenüber, Miroslav Lajcak, am Rande des Globalen Sicherheitsforums GLOBSEC, präsentierte Comanescu die Position Bukarests über einige aktuelle Themen auf der europäischen Agenda. Vor allem die Migrationskrise und die politischen und Sicherheitsentwicklungen in der Ostnachbarschaft der EU kamen dabei zur Sprache. Comanescu bezog sich auf die Lage im ex-sowjetischen Raum und zwar in der mehrheitlich rumänischsprachigen Republik Moldau und der Ukraine. Seinerseits begrüßte der slowakische Außenminister Lajcak die Entsendung eines Experten aus dem rumänischen Außenministerium, der sich dem slowakischen Team während der slowakischen EU-Ratspräsidentschaft in der zweiten Jahreshälfte anschließen sollte.



    BUKAREST: Präsident Iohannis hat den stellvertretenden NATO-Generalsekretär, Botschafter Alexander Versbow, per Dekret ausgezeichnet. Der Staatschef verlieh dem amerikanischen Amtsträger den Nationalorden “Stern Rumäniens im Grad eines Hohen Offiziers. Die Auszeichnung sei ein “Zeichen hoher Wertschätzung für die kontinuierliche Unterstützung Rumäniens, die Vision über die Entwicklung und Erfüllung der euro-atlantischen Sicherheit, sowie die Förderung der internationalen Zusammenarbeit für die Bewältigung der Herausforderungen im neuen Millenium heißt es in der Begründung. Rumänien ist seit 2004 Mitglied der NATO.



    BUKAREST: Das Generalinspektorat für Einwanderungsfragen hat die Rücksendung von acht ausländischen Staatsbürgern nach Serbien bestätigt. Sie waren vor knapp zwei Wochen bei dem Versuch eines illegalen Grenzübertritts von der Grenzpolizei aufgegriffen worden. Während des Aufenthalts in der Ausländerunterkunft im westrumänischen Arad wurden sie identifiziert und mit Reisedokumenten von den Botschaften und Konsulaten der jeweiligen Heimatländer versorgt. Zwei der Migranten sind Iraker, einer stammt aus Syrien und die restlichen fünf sind aus Sri-Lanka. Alle wollten laut eigenen Angaben nach Westeuropa gelangen.



    CHISINAU: Einer von zehn Moldauern ist auch im Besitz der rumänischen Staatsangehörigkeit. Das wird in mehreren Presseberichten behauptet, die die Landesstelle für Staatsbürgerschaft in Bukarest zitieren. Ab 2002 habe Rumänien 385.000 Einwohnern und damit 10% der Bevölkerung der Moldau die rumänische Staatsangehörigkeit gewährt. Vor einigen Jahren hatte die rumänische Regierung ein Sonderprogramm zur Verschlankung des Einbürgerungsverfahrens für Moldauer gestartet. Die heutige Moldau wurde auf einem Teil der 1940 von der Sowjetunion nach einem Ultimatum annektierten Gebiete gegründet. Laut aktuellen Umfragen seien etwa 70% aller Rumänen sowie 20% der Moldauer für eine Wiedervereinigung der beiden Staaten.

    Réunion – Le ministre roumain des Affaires étrangères, Lazar Comanescu, participe jeudi et vendredi en Lituanie, à l’invitation de son homologue, Linas Linkevicius, à la réunion informelle Snow Meeting, sur des sujets de politique étrangère et de sécurité. Y participent de hauts responsables du domaine de la politique étrangère et de la sécurité des Etats membres de l’OTAN et de l’UE et des représentants du milieu académique, lit-on dans un communiqué du ministère de Bucarest. Les débats porteront principalement sur l’évolution du milieu sécuritaire dans le voisinage oriental et méridional de l’OTAN, ainsi que sur la réponse de l’Alliance à ces évolutions. A l’agenda de la réunion Snow Meeting figurent également les perspectives du sommet de l’OTAN de Varsovie, prévu pour juillet prochain et l’état de la mise en œuvre des décisions adoptées lors du précédent sommet, organisé en septembre 2014, au Royaume Uni. En marge de la réunion, le chef de la diplomatie roumaine s’est entretenu avec son homologue lituanien de certains aspects relevant de la coopération bilatérale, de l’agenda européen et régional, ainsi que de la coopération au sein de l’OTAN. Toujours jeudi, le chef de la diplomatie roumaine a rencontré Victoria Nuland, sous-secrétaire d’Etat américain pour l’Europe et l’Eurasie. Les deux responsables ont discuté entre autres de la situation dans la région, un accent particulier étant mis sur les évolutions en République de Moldova.



    Présidence – La Roumanie assumera cette année la présidence tournante du Groupe directeur du Bataillon multinational de génie « Tisa », une initiative régionale à laquelle participent également la Slovaquie et lUkraine. Bucarest a pris le relais de la présidence du groupe de son voisin hongrois lors dune cérémonie qui sest déroulée aujourdhui, à Budapest. Dans cette nouvelle qualité, la Roumanie se propose dorganiser plusieurs réunions dexperts et elle sera en charge de lexercice multinational « Blonde Avalanche 2016 » réunissant des structures de génie de tous les quatre pays participants. Cest pour la quatrième fois que Bucarest assume la présidence tournante du groupe après les mandats de 2004, 2008 et 2012, précise le Ministère roumain de la Défense.



    Diplomatie – Le secrétaire d’Etat au ministère roumain des Affaires étrangères, Radu Podgorean, a reçu jeudi le nouvel ambassadeur de République de Moldova à Bucarest, Mihai Gribincea. Selon un communiqué de la diplomatie roumaine, Podgorean a déclaré que le contexte actuel du voisinage oriental imposait la formation, le plus tôt possible, d’un gouvernement moldave capable d’assurer la stabilité du pays et la mise en œuvre des réformes nécessaires pour stimuler le parcours européen de la République de Moldova. L’officiel roumain a, quant à lui, souligné qu’une telle évolution amènerait des progrès dans le déroulement des projets de coopération et d’assistance initiés par la Roumanie pour appuyer son voisin moldave.



    Anniversaire — Les Roumains célèbrent, le 15 janvier, les 166 ans écoulés depuis la naissance de leur poète national, Mihai Eminescu (1850-1889), considéré comme le dernier grand romantique européen. Cette même date marque la Journée de la culture nationale, instituée par le Parlement de Bucarest en 2010, sur l’initiative de l’Académie roumaine. Comme chaque année, les missions diplomatiques et consulaires et les instituts culturels roumains de l’étranger organisent des événements dédiés à cette journée. L’anniversaire de la naissance du poète Mihai Eminescu sera célébré officiellement en République de Moldova aussi (pays à population majoritairement roumanophone), ainsi que par les communautés des Roumains vivant à l’étranger.



    Tennis — Le match comptant pour les demi-finales du tournoi de Sydney entre la joueuse roumaine de tennis Simona Halep, numéro deux mondiale et la Russe Svetlana Kuznetsova, no 25 au classement WTA, a été suspendu jusquà vendredi, en raison de la pluie. La Roumaine avait pris un léger avantage sur son adversaire (5-4, 1er set). Dans la même compétition, le duo roumano – indien Florin Mergea/ Rohan Bopanna a obtenu sa qualification dans les demi-finales de l’épreuve de double messieurs, après une victoire par 6 à 2, 6 à 4, contre la paire australienne Sam Groth/John Peers.



    Handball- La sélection masculine de handball de Roumanie a vaincu jeudi, à domicile, l’équipe autrichienne (score 32 à 29), mais a raté la qualification au tournoi de barrage du Championnat du Monde 2017, n’ayant pas obtenu l’avantage de quatre buts. Par ailleurs, la sélection nationale de water-polo de Roumanie rencontrera vendredi la sélection allemande, pour le dernier match du groupe C du Championnat européen, de Belgrade.

    Chisinau – En République de Moldova, la majorité parlementaire demande à nouveau au président Nicolae Timofti de désigner le candidat du Parti démocrate, Vlad Plahotniuc, à la tête du gouvernement. Les arguments invoqués mercredi par le chef de l’Etat pour justifier le rejet de la candidature de Plahotniuc sont infondés, peut-on lire dans une déclaration diffusée au nom de la majorité. Le chef de l’Etat moldave a demandé à la majorité parlementaire de Chisinau de proposer un nouveau candidat, précisant que le rejet de Vlad Plahotniuc était fondé sur des mesures figurant dans la Constitution et sur des décisions de la Cour Constitutionnelle, selon lesquelles «il est contraire aux principes de l’Etat de droit de nommer aux fonctions de direction des personnes dont intégrité est mise en question». Membre du Parti Démocrate et soutenu par une majorité hétérogène qui inclut les libéraux pro-européens mais aussi d’anciens communistes traditionnellement pro-russe, Vlad Plahotniuc est considéré par ses adversaires comme un oligarque, ayant été accusé à plusieurs reprises d’implication en activités illégales, nuisibles à l’image de la République de Moldova. Par ailleurs, au cas où un nouveau gouvernement n’est pas installé avant le 29 janvier, le président Timofti se verra obligé de dissoudre le Parlement et d’annoncer la tenue d’un scrutin législatif anticipé.

La Roumanie a besoin d’un avantage de quatre buts pour obtenir sa qualification au tournoi de barrage. Par ailleurs, la sélection nationale de water-polo de Roumanie a perdu devant l’Italie le match disputé dans le groupe C du Championnat européen de Belgrade. Lundi, les sportifs roumains ont vaincu la Géorgie, sur le score de 12 à 6 et demain ils s’apprêtent à rencontrer la sélection allemande.
