    Impressions from the winners of the RRI Contest on C. Antonovici

    Algerians Muahmed Goumidi and Abdel-Kader Khalil are the winners of the grand prize offered by RRI for the contest “A Contemporary of Brancusi: Constantin Antonovici. The prize consisted in a 7-day trip, between April 15th and 30th 2016, to Gorj County, the birthplace of Constantin Brancusi. So they went to Gorj County. We revisit monuments, monasteries and special places, inviting you to find out why our guests said that Romania is among the most beautiful countries in the world.



    It was our guests’ first time in Romania. Their visit started in Targu Jiu, according to Muahmed Goumidi: “We saw all of Brancusi’s works, extraordinary works, such as the Endless Column, the Gate of the Kiss, and the Chairs Alley. We also visited Hobita village and Brancusi’s house, as well as a Christian cemetery, and those were some of the most beautiful areas I have ever seen. We visited wonderful caves and also Tismana Monastery, the town of Motru and the village of Cocorova, in Dolj County. In addition, we took a boat ride to see Ponicova Cave, Muierilor Cave, and Decebal’s sculpture on the Danube, on the border with Serbia. We also visited Mraconia cave, the town of Drobeta Turnu-Severin, the port and the museum in town, and then we took a tour of Targu Jiu and the Art Museum.



    In fact, any tourist should start their visit in Targu Jiu. There you can find the Gate of the Kiss. It is a space that takes you to another world. On the pillars of the gate there are representations of the motif of the kiss, which can be perceived as an eye as well. It looks within and, according to the museum’s curators, it looks within the souls of visitors. It is one of the most important works by sculptor Constantin Brancusi.



    If you take the same road, you reach the Chairs Alley. The chairs mark the road to the Table of Silence, a peasant table. The sculptor saw it as the place of departure for future combatants, future heroes. This work in stone is one of the most often visited. And let us not forget the Endless Column, a true spiritual testament of the great artist. It is a monument dedicated to heroes, just as the rest of the great ensemble. After that you can head to the mountains, just like the winners of our contest did. They went to the northern part of the county, the perfect destination for people who love adventure tourism, or love to take spectacular photos. Gorj County has 2,000 caves. Mountain tourism is its strong point, offering the possibility for spelunking. There are also areas perfect for paragliding as well as rafting, cycling, or sports fishing.



    It is a complete destination, according to one of our winners, Muahmed Goumidi: “We went to an area that was truly superb, with eternal monuments created by Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi, who left his mark for eternity there, with his beautiful and uplifting art. In truth, we saw extraordinary things, we are happy for seeing the charming scenery of Romania, this beautiful country. I could say that Romania is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, which should be visited, people should enjoy its wonderful landscapes and its ancient tourist monuments.



    Equally delighted by the trip was the other winner, Abdel-Khader Khalil: “I would like to thank Radio Romania International for organizing this important contest, the contest about Constantin Brancusi, which was quite special. And here we are, among you, in Romania. Our first visit was to Targu Jiu, in Gorj County, which is a tourist area. And the first impression I would like to talk about was the good reception we enjoyed, from the airport until we got to Targu Jiu. The first tourist attractions we visited were the works by sculptor Constantin Brancusi, The Avenue of Heroes monumental ensemble, which the sculptor made upon commission from the National League of Gorj women. It is truly astonishing, because the ensemble is made up of four works, The Chairs Alley, the Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss, in addition to the Endless Column. This was on top of the fact that we visited many villages, among them Hobita, where you can find Brancusi’s house, the house he grew up in, where we saw how people used to live back in those days. We had the great honor of visiting this famous house.



    Another advantage of visiting Gorj county is that, as opposed to Romania’s intensely promoted areas, no matter when you schedule your visit here, you won’t have issues with accommodation. Targu Jiu has a number of hotels, B&Bs, big and small, for all budgets. You find four and three star hotels, and many rustic B&Bs in villages. The hosts are always happy to receive tourists.




    This was what Muahmed Goumidi enjoyed the most: “What struck me first was that the Romanian people is a tranquil, special people, who love tourism, and who adapt easily to the needs of tourists coming from all over the world. We were astonished, when we arrived in Targu Jiu, to see that the city is very tranquil, full of well-organized people. The Romanian people impressed us, they are exceptional. To conclude, I would like to thank RRI for all its efforts to inform the Arab world on Romania and about all political, economic and cultural events. Efforts have been made to inform the world on Romania, on its civilization and its beautiful traditions. I thank you very much, and I invite all listeners in the Arab world and beyond to listen to RRI, and get to know Romania, either up close or from afar, because it is a beautiful country with a very old civilization.

  • Winners of the Contest “A Contemporary of Brancusi: Constantin Antonovici”

    Dear friends, Radio Romania International invited you to participate, until January 15th 2016, mailing date, in a new prize-winning contest entitled “A Contemporary of Brancusi: Constantin Antonovici. The contest was devoted to the famous Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi and to one of his most outstanding disciples, Constantin Antonovici (1911-2002), who had a brilliant career in Europe and the US. Of all the artists who worked with Brancusi, Constantin Antonovici was the only one who had a letter of recommendation signed by the great sculptor.



    Many of you participated in our contest and provided 210 correct and complete answers. Thank you for your interest and hope you will take part in RRIs future contests as well.



    The Grand Prize consists in a 7-day trip, for two RRI listeners, between April 15th and 30th 2016, to Gorj County, the birthplace of Constantin Brancusi. As usual you will have to provide for your own transportation to and from Romania and to cover the cost of your visa for Romania, if necessary.



    The contest was organized jointly with the “Constantin Brancusi Research, Documentation and Promotion Centre in Targu Jiu , with the support of several local partners: The Gorj County Council, the Targu Jiu Town Hall, The Gorj and Craiova branches of the Fine Artists Union, the Dolj County Council, the Craiova City Hall, the Gorj Centre for the Promotion of Traditional Culture, the “Marin Sorescu National Theatre in Craiova, the “Maria Tanase Folk Ensemble in Craiova and the Craiova Art Museum.



    The correct answers to the contests questions were presented in RRIs shows and were also available on the stations website and on its Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn profiles.



    The contest ended on January 15th, 2016, mailing date. But before we announce the winners, lets go over the questions and answers once again:



    Question: Which is the central motif of Constantin Antonovicis work?


    Answer: The owl.



    Question: Of all the artists who worked with Brancusi, what makes Constantin Antonovici unique?


    Answer: Constantin Antonovici was the only one who had a letter of recommendation signed by the great sculptor.

    Jayanta Chakrabarty of India, a listener to RRIs English Service and one of the 1st prize winners of this contest has written: “Romania happens to be one of the few countries in Europe where there is an abundance of creative minds. It is a unique country that has given birth to literary giants, great musicians and outstanding artists. So I was not surprised when RRI’s latest contest featured the world-renowned sculptor Constantin Brancusi and his most devoted and favoured disciple, Constantin Antonovici. The excitement and the beautiful experience to delve into the works of these outstanding Romanian souls prompted me to participate in the competition. I have been a listener to RRIs broadcasts since the early 1970s when it was popularly known as Radio Bucharest. In fact, I have grown alongside RRI from childhood to adulthood. I am grateful to RRI for helping me improve my English. (…) At the start of the 2016 I have high hopes that RRI will continue to update us on the various facets of Romanian life and its vibrant culture.



    Mitul Kansal of India, another listener to the RRI English, and equally a first prize winner has motivated his decision to take part in the contest by saying: “I am a great lover of the modern art created by Constantin Antonovici, who moved to the US in 1953. He possessed an artistic lucidity that allowed him to stylise and simplify in order to find essential forms, just as Brancusi did. (…) Antonovici exhibited in France, Italy, Romania and the US and many private collectors acquired his works. So the reason why am I participating in this contest is very simple: I am a regular listener to RRI and I am very much interested in Romanias culture, history, art, customs, traditions and way of life. I fully believe that RRI is bringing Romania closer to us through its programs, website and various contests.



    A faithful listener to RRIs English broadcast, Martin Rogan from the UK, has written: “I often take part in RRIs contests because I always learn something new by doing so, and the possibility of winning a prize, big or small, is always an attraction. I must say, as a confirmed technophobe, that I only consult websites when there is absolutely no alternative, so I would be lying if I were to say that I followed RRIs online content, or anyone elses for that matter. Much prefer the immediacy of short wave broadcasts especially when the content is interesting and reception is good. With RRI, both of these things apply and my interest in Romania is of long standing anyway. People often study French, Spanish or Italian in this country but fewer study Portuguese and ignorance of the Romanian language in the UK is truly shocking. RRI is a major means of addressing this problem and I hope it continues to do so for many years to come.

    Another faithful listener to RRIs English programmes, Hans Verner Lollike of Denmark has written: “Until mid 1970s Romania was just a spot on the Map of Europe and some extraordinary athletes competing in the Olympic Games. Later, as a board member of the Danish National Youth Council, I got the chance to participate in the NGO- parallel conference to UN Population Conference in Bucharest. I have a whole collection of memories of that time. (…) Thanks to a friend of mine, Radio Romania International, I was introduced to one of the most outstanding sculptors of modern time, Constantin Brancusi. I have been looking for his works all over. Sadly, in Denmark he is not present enough! But 10 years ago, when I had a day on my own in New York, and the Guggenheim Museum was closed, I had luck at the Metropolitan to see two of his works, and a couple of years later, in Paris, I saw his workshop. What is it by Brancusi, always fascinates. (…) A visit to his sculptural ensemble in Targu Jiu would be a lifetime experience.

    Les Algériens Mohammed Goumidi et Abdel-Kader Khalil sont les gagnants du grand prix de notre jeu-concours : « Constantin Antonovici, génération Brancusi ». Et ce grand prix a été un séjour en Roumanie du 15 au 30 avril 2016, dans le comté de Gorj, où a vu le jour le célèbre sculpteur Constantin Brancusi. Nous les accompagnons aujourd’hui sur les ondes aux magnifiques monastères et aux sites qu’ils ont visités et qui les ont déterminés à placer la Roumanie parmi les plus beaux pays du monde. Les grands gagnants de notre jeu-concours se trouvaient en Roumanie pour la première fois et leur séjour a commencé précisément à Târgu Jiu.

    Mohammed Goumidi raconte : « Nous avons vu toutes les sculptures monumentales réalisées par Brancusi, qui sont des œuvres extraordinaires : la Colonne sans fin, la Table du Silence, la Porte du Baiser… Nous avons également visité le village de Hobiţa et la maison de Brancusi, ainsi qu’un cimetière chrétien. C’est une des plus belles régions que nous avons vues. Nous avons visité aussi des grottes magnifiques, le monastère de Tismana, la ville de Motru et le village de Cocorova, du comté de Dolj. Nous avons également fait une excursion en canot pour voir la grotte de Ponicova et la Grotte des Femmes, ainsi que la statue du roi Decebal, érigée sur la rive du Danube, à la frontière avec la Serbie. Nous avons visité le monastère de Mraconia et la ville de Drobeta Turnu-Severin, son port et son musée, ensuite nous avons fait un tour de la ville de Târgu-Jiu et visité le musée d’art de la ville. »

    La ville de Târgu Jiu est d’ailleurs le point de départ obligé de toute visite touristique de la région. On dirait que la Porte du Baiser fraie le passage vers un autre monde. Sur les piliers de cette porte en bois on peut voir le motif du baiser, qui ressemble d’ailleurs à un œil. Un œil dont le regard est tourné vers l’intérieur et qui, selon les commissaires de cet ensemble monumental, touche les âmes de ceux qui visitent la ville. C’est une des œuvres les plus importantes du sculpteur Constantin Brancusi. Si vous suivez le même chemin, vous arrivez à l’Allée des chaises. Les chaises que vous allez voir marquent en fait le chemin vers la Table du Silence : une table paysanne. Dans l’imagination de son créateur, c’est la table à laquelle s’assoient les guerriers – et pourquoi pas, les futurs héros – avant de partir au combat. Ces sculptures monumentales en pierre attirent de nombreux visiteurs. Parmi elles, nous ne devons pas oublier la Colonne sans fin, véritable testament spirituel du célèbre artiste. C’est un monument dédié aux héros – comme tout l’ensemble d’ailleurs.

    Après cette visite, nous allons nous diriger, avec nos deux gagnants, vers la zone de montagne du nord de cette contrée, qui séduira les passionnés d’aventure et de photo par son décor spectaculaire et sauvage. La contrée de Gorj compte 2.000 grottes. C’est un endroit idéal pour la spéléologie et les randonnées. La région offre également d’excellentes conditions pour le vol en parapente et en deltaplane, pour le rafting, le cyclotourisme ou la pêche sportive.

    Une destination complète, pour citer un de nos deux gagnants, Mohammed Goumidi : « Nous avons découvert, en effet, une région splendide, avec les monuments éternels du sculpteur roumain Constantin Brancusi, qui a laissé des empreintes éternelles, les empreintes de son art tellement élevé et beau. En effet, ce que nous avons vu est vraiment extraordinaire, cela valait la peine de voir les paysages magnifiques que nous avons admirés en Roumanie, ce pays tellement beau. Je dirais que la Roumanie compte parmi les plus beaux pays au monde ; les gens doivent la visiter pour ce réjouir de ses paysages merveilleux et de ses monuments anciens. »

    Abdel-Khader Khalil a été tout aussi enchanté de son séjour en Roumanie : « Je remercie RRI d’avoir organisé ce jeu-concours important, grâce auquel nous avons eu la chance de visiter la Roumanie. En effet, le jeu-concours sur le sculpteur Constantin Brancusi a été tout à fait particulier. Et nous voilà parmi vous, en Roumanie. Notre première visite a été à Târgu Jiu, dans le comté de Gorj, qui est une région touristique. La première chose qui m’a impressionné, dès notre arrivée à l’aéroport et jusqu’à Târgu Jiu, a été le magnifique accueil qui nous a été réservé. Nous avons commencé par visiter l’Ensemble Monumental de Brancusi « La voie des héros », qu’il a érigé à la demande de la Ligue nationale de femmes de Gorj. C’est vraiment inouï. L’ensemble est constitué de 4 sculptures monumentales : l’Allée des Chaises, la Table du Silence, la Porte du Baiser, auxquelles s’ajoute la Colonne sans fin. Nous avons visité nombre de communes et de villages, dont celui de Hobiţa, où se trouve la maison paternelle du sculpteur Brancusi et nous avons pu voir comment vivait ce célèbre artiste. Cela a été pour nous un grand honneur que de franchir le seuil de cette maison historique. »

    Un autre avantage de cette région de la Roumanie, c’est qu’à la différence d’autres zones touristiques du pays, quel que soit le moment de l’année où vous avez choisi de la visiter, vous n’aurez pas de problèmes d’hébergement. A Târgu Jiu il y a de nombreux hôtels, des pensions plus grandes ou plus petites, qui pratiquent des tarifs pour toutes les bourses: des 4 étoiles, des 3 étoiles, des pensions rustiques. Et leurs propriétaires sont toujours heureux de vous accueillir.

    Mohammed Goumidi l’a d’ailleurs remarqué : « Ce que j’ai remarqué au premier abord c’est que le peuple roumain est un peuple calme, un peuple remarquable, qui aime le tourisme, qui s’adapte aux besoins des touristes de tous les pays du monde. En arrivant à Târgu Jiu, nous avons été étonnés de découvrir une ville est très calme et des gens très organisés. Le peuple roumain nous a ébloui… c’est un peuple exceptionnel. Pour conclure, j’aimerais remercier RRI pour tous ses efforts visant à informer le monde arabe sur la Roumanie et sur tous les événements qui y ont lieu – qu’ils soient politiques, économiques ou culturels. Des efforts ont été faits pour informer le monde sur la Roumanie, sur sa civilisation et ses belles coutumes. Je vous remercie beaucoup et j’invite tous les auditeurs du monde arabe et d’ailleurs à écouter RRI et à connaître la Roumanie, de près ou de loin, car c’est un beau pays dont la civilisation est très ancienne. »

    Impresiones de los ganadores del concurso “Contemporáneo de Brancuşi…”



    Los argelinos Muahmed Goumidi y Abdel-Kader Khalil son los ganadores del gran premio del concurso organizado por Radio Rumanía Internacional: “Contemporáneo de Brancuşi: Constantin Antonovici”, esto es, una estancia en Rumanía entre el 15 y el 30 de abril de 2016. Nuestros oyentes visitaron el distrito de Gorj, donde nació el célebre escultor Constantin Brancuşi. En los minutos que siguen, volveremos a visitar monumentos, monasterios y otros alicientes, para descubrir por qué nuestros huéspedes declararon que Rumanía es uno de los más bellos países del mundo.



    Esta fue la primera estancia en Rumanía de los ganadores de nuestro concurso. Su visita comenzó en la ciudad de Targu-Jiu. He aquí lo que ha declarado Muahmed Goumidi:



    “Hemos visto todas las obras de Brancuşi, son obras extraordinarias, como por ejemplo la Columna del Infinito, la Avenida de las Sillas y la Puerta del Beso. También hemos visitado el pueblo de Hobiţa y la casa de Brancuşi, así como un cementerio cristiano, éstas han sido las zonas más bonitas que hemos visitado. Además, hemos visitado algunas cuevas maravillosas y el monasterio de Tismana, la ciudad de Motru y el pueblo de Cocorova en el distrito de Dolj. Hemos realizado también una excursión en barco para ver la cueva de Ponicova y la cueva de las Mujeres, así como el rostro esculpido de Decebal en el Danubio, en la frontera con Serbia. También hemos visitado el monasterio de Mraconia, la ciudad de Drobeta Turnu — Severin, el puerto y el museo de allí y hemos hecho un recorrido por la ciudad de Targu Jiu, donde hemos visitado el Museo de Arte.”



    La visita de cualquier turista debería comenzar en Targu Jiu. Allí se encuentra la Puerta del Beso, que se parece a una puerta hacia otro mundo. En los pilares de madera se puede ver el motivo del beso, que se parece a un ojo. Es un ojo que mira hacia el interior y según afirman los cuidadores del monumento, alcanza las almas de los visitantes del municipio de Targu Jiu. Ésta es una de las obras más importantes del escultor Constantin Brancuşi. Si siguen caminando, llegarán a la Avenida de las Sillas. Dichas sillas marcan prácticamente el camino hacia la Mesa del Silencio, una mesa campesina. El escultor la percibió como la mesa de la confrontación, la mesa de la que se levantan y salen a la batalla los futuros combatientes, y por qué no, los futuros hérores. Son esculturas en piedra visitadas por muchos turistas.



    Sin embargo, no podemos pasar por alto la Columna del Infinito, un verdadero testamento espiritual del gran artista. Se trata de un monumento dedicado a los héroes, igual que todo el conjunto. Después de visitarlo, pueden dirigirse a las montañas, como han hecho los ganadores de nuestro concurso. Prácticamente, eso significa que se dirigirán hacia la zona del norte del distrito, hacia el destino preferido de los aficionados al turismo de aventura o de los fotógrafos que quieren captar paisajes espactaculares. En el distrito de Gorj hay 2.000 cuevas y por eso, el turismo de montaña es una atracción para los turistas que pueden visitar dichas cuevas o hacer excursiones. Hay también zonas idóneas para volar en parapenta y en ala delta, así como para hacer rafting, cicloturismo o pesca deportiva.



    Se trata de un destino completo, según ha afirmado Muahmed Goumidi, uno de los ganadores de nuestro concurso:



    “Es verdad que hemos visitado una región muy bonita, con los monumentos eternos del escultor rumano Constantin Brancuşi que nos han marcado y que representan una expresión de su arte elevado y bello. Todo lo que hemos visto es impresionate y nos hemos deleitado con los paisajes maravillosos que Rumanía ofrece. Podría decir que Rumanía es uno de los países más bonitos del mundo que vale la pena visitar porque aquí la gente puede disfrutar de paisajes encantadores y de monumentos antiguos.”



    El otro ganador del concurso de RRI, Abdel-Khader Khali se ha mostrado igualmente encantado. Escuchémosle:



    ”Quiero agradecer a la emisora de Radio Rumanía Internacional por haber organizado este concurso importante, gracias al cual hemos tenido la oportunidad de visitar Rumanía. Es verdad que el concurso dedicado al escultor Constantin Brancuşi ha sido muy especial. Y ahora estamos aquí, con vosotros, en Rumanía. Primero hemos visitado la ciudad de Targu Jiu, en el distrito de Gorj, una zona turística donde nos han acogido muy bien, ya desde el aeropuerto, hasta llegar a Targu Jiu. Hemos admirado allí las esculturas de Brancuşi, así como el conjunto llamado la Calle de los Héroes, el conjunto monumental de la Calle de los Héroes, creado a solicitud de la Liga Nacional de las Mujeres de Gorj. Es algo asombroso porque el conjunto abarca cuatro obras: la Avenida de las Sillas, la Mesa del Silencio, la Puerta del Beso y la Columna del Infinito. Además, hemos visitado muchos pueblos y aldeas, entre los cuales también Hobiţa, donde se halla la casa en que nació el escultor Constantin Brancuşi y donde podemos ver cómo vivía este gran artista. Nosotros hemos tenido el honor de visitar esta casa histórica.”




    Otra ventaja de la zona es que, a diferencia de otras regiones turísticas de Rumanía, si queiren visitarla, no habrá problemas de alojamiento.     140 ans après la naissance de Constantin Brancusi, le créateur ayant changé l’art moderne, RRI s’intéresse, tout au long de cette année 2016, à son héritage humain et matériel. C’est pourquoi nous vous avons invités à participer à un jeu-concours consacré à un des disciples les plus intéressants du sculpteur roumain – il s’agit de Constantin Antonovici (1911 – 2002), qui a fait une brillante carrière en Europe et aux Etats-Unis. Parmi tous les artistes avec lesquels Brancusi a travaillé, il a été le seul possesseur d’une recommandation écrite et signée par le grand sculpteur lui-même.

    Vous avez aimé ce défi artistique – pour preuve les centaines de messages qui nous sont parvenus, mais dont seulement 210 comportaient les réponses correctes.     Le Grand Prix de ce concours consiste en un séjour de 7 jours (6 nuitées) en pension complète, du 15 au 30 avril 2016, dans le département de Gorj, contrée d’origine de Constantin Brancusi. Cette fois-ci nous aurons 2 grands gagnants.

    Ce jeu a été organisé en coopération avec le Centre de recherche, de documentation et de promotion Constantin Brancusi de Targu Jiu ainsi qu’avec d’autres partenaires locaux: le Conseil départemental de Gorj, la Municipalité de Târgu Jiu, les antennes de Gorj et de Craiova de l’Union des artistes plasticiens, le Conseil départemental de Dolj, la Municipalité de Craiova, le Centre pour la promotion de la culture traditionnelle du département de Gorj, le Théâtre National Marin Sorescu, l’ensemble folklorique Maria Tănase et le Musée d’art de Craiova.

    Liebe Hörerfreunde, Radio Rumänien International hatte Sie bis zum 15. Januar 2016 eingeladen, an dem Preisausschreiben Constantin Antonovici — ein Zeitgenosse von Brâncuşi“ teilzunehmen. Unser Quiz war also zwei gro‎ßen rumänischen Künstlern gewidmet, dem weltberühmten Bildhauer Constantin Brâncuşi und einem seiner Schüler, Constantin Antonovici (1911–2002), der eine ruhmvolle Karriere in Europa und den USA hatte. Er war der einzige Künstler, der mit Brâncuşi zusammengearbeitet hat und gleichzeitig ein von diesem unterzeichnetes Empfehlungsschreiben besa‎ß.



    Das Preisausschreiben hat Ihr Interesse geweckt und wir haben von Ihnen 210 richtige und vollständige Antworten erhalten. Wir bedanken uns und laden auch zur Teilnahme an weiteren unserer Wettbewerbe ein.

    Unser treuer RRI-Hörer Klaus Karusseit aus Schweden, der unseren Sender seit 1960 hört, begründete seine Quiz-Teilnahme wie folgt:



    Es ist mal wieder so weit. Ein neues Preisausschreiben steht vor der Tür. Dabeisein ist Pflicht. Auch diesmal werde ich versuchen, einen Preis zu ergattern. Mir hat es bei den Besuchen so gut gefallen, dass ich gerne nochmals Rumänien besuchen möchte.“

    Mit Hilfe der Landkreisräte und anderer Partner entschied Radio Rumänien International, die Persönlichkeit des Bildhauers Constantin Brâncuşi wieder in die Aufmerksamkeit zu bringen. Schon lange her hatte ich einen Artikel in der ukrainischen Zeitschrift »Narodnaja Rumynija« über den rumänischen Bildhauer gelesen. Einige seiner Werke wurden zudem in einer Sonderreihe von QSL-Karten von Radio Rumänien International präsentiert, was uns eine Reise in die faszinierende Welt der abstrakten Kunst ermöglichte. Ich danke Ihnen, dass Sie dieses Hörerquiz organisiert haben, denn es bietet den glücklichen Gewinnern die einzigartige Chance, in die Welt von Constantin Brâncuşi einzublicken, die Geschichte und die Kultur Rumäniens kennenzulernen.“

    Der treue Hörer der spanischen Sendung Juan Franco Crespo sagte seinerseits über seine Teilnahme zum Hörerquiz von Radio Rumänien International:



    Die Zuneigung und die Freundschaft, die ich für Radio Rumänien International empfinde, haben mich dazu bewogen, mich an diesem Hörerquiz zu beteiligen. Ihre Schöpfung setzt Târgu Jiu, Gorj und Rumänien unter weltweit beliebte Reiseziele für Kulturtourismus. Ich höre die Sendungen von Radio Rumänien International, weil ich möglichst viel über Rumänien, seine Kultur, seine Traditionen und Sehenswürdigkeiten wissen will.“

    Der Wunsch, neue Informationen und allgemeine Kultur zu gewinnen, insbesondere in Hinblick auf die rumänische Kunst als Teil der europäischen Kunst, hat mich dazu veranlasst, an diesem Hörerquiz teilzunehmen. Ich höre die Programme von Radio Rumänien International seit den Achtzigern und das ist auf mehrere Gründe zurückzuführen: Erstens weil ich Informationen über lokale und internationale Ereignisse kriegen will, weil die Programme abwechslungsreich sind, und nicht zuletzt, weil Radio Rumänien International jedes Mal Solidarität seinen Hörern gegenüber gezeigt hat.“

    Rumänien gehört zu den wenigen europäischen Ländern, die der Welt sehr viele kreative Persönlichkeiten geschenkt haben. Rumänien ist ein einmaliges, verblüffendes Land, aus Rumänien stammen gro‎ße, weltbekannte Schriftsteller und Künstler. Daher war es für mich keine Überraschung, dass der jüngste RRI-Hörerwettbewerb den Bildhauer Constantin Brâncuşi und seinen Lieblingsschüler, Constantin Antonovici, zum Thema hatte. Mein Enthusiasmus und die wunderbare Erfahrung, mich in das Leben und Werk dieser bedeutenden Künstler zu vertiefen, haben mich dazu veranlasst, am Hörer-Quiz teilzunehmen. Das sind einfach meine Gründe: Einerseits die wunderbare Erfahrung, die Antworten auf die Quiz-Fragen zu suchen, andererseits der Enthusiasmus, eventuell unter den Gewinnern erwähnt zu werden. Radio Rumänien International höre ich schon seit Anfang der 1970er Jahren, als der Sender noch Radio Bukarest hie‎ß. Ich bin mit Radio Rumänien International aufgewachsen, ich hörte RRI in meiner Kindheit, dann als Teenager, und ich höre es auch heute, als Erwachsener. Ich bin Ihrem Sender dankbar, weil RRI mir geholfen hat, mein Englisch zu verbessern.     Unser treuer Hörer Martin Rogan aus Gro‎ßbritannien schrieb uns:



    Ich beteilige mich oft an den RRI-Hörerwettbewerben, weil ich jedes Mal etwas Neues lernen kann. Auch die Möglichkeit, einen kleinen oder grö‎ßeren Preis zu gewinnen, ist an sich interessant. Ich muss Ihnen etwas gestehen: Die moderne Informationstechnik mag ich überhaupt nicht. Im Internet suche ich, erst nachdem alle anderen Informationsquellen ausgeschöpft sind. Deshalb würde ich lügen, wenn ich sagen würde, dass ich oft auf die RRI-Internetseite nach Informationen suche. Ich ziehe die Wärme der Kurzwellensender vor, vor allem wenn der Inhalt interessant und der Empfang gut ist. Beides gilt für Radio Rumänien International; hinzu kommt auch mein gro‎ßes Interesse für Rumänien. In Schottland lernen die Leute meistens Französisch, Spanisch oder Italienisch als Fremdsprache, die wenigsten lernen Portugiesisch und sehr viele ignorieren einfach die rumänische Sprache, was für mich absolut schockierend ist. Daher ist Radio Rumänien International eine wichtige Informationsquelle über Rumänien und ich hoffe, dass es auch weiterhin viele Jahre so bleibt.“

    Unser treuer Hörer Ralf Urbanczyk aus Deutschland schickte uns folgende Erläuterung für seine Teilnahme am RRI-Hörer-Preisausschreiben:



    Warum habe ich am Preisausschreiben »Constantin Antonovici — ein Zeitgenosse von Brâncuşi« teilgenommen? Mich interessiert das Land Rumänien, seine Geschichte, Kultur und das Leben der Menschen dort. Dazu versorgt mich Radio Rumänien International täglich in deutscher Sprache mit aktuellen Informationen und Hintergrundinformationen in einem breiten Spektrum, was ich sonst nirgendwo anders finde. Doch das passive Hören von Informationen allein reicht mir nicht. Deshalb beteilige ich mich immer wieder aktiv an allen Höreraktionen des Senders. Diese sind jedes Mal ein virtuelles Treffen Gleichgesinnter, wenn der Sender in seinen Programmen die Beiträge und Meinungen anderer Hörer vorstellt und zur Diskussion einlädt. Dieses neue Preisausschreiben war der Anlass, mich mit dem Leben und Werk des Bildhauers Constantin Antonovici zu beschäftigen. Während man über den Meister Constantin Brâncuşi überall auf der Welt spricht, scheint sein Schüler Constantin Antonovici wohl eher zu Unrecht in seinem Schatten zu stehen. Beeindruckend ist seine Biografie: Obwohl er erfolgreich in der alten und der neuen Welt wirkte, verlor der in Rumänien geborene und dort in der Bukowina aufgewachsene Künstler nie seine Verbundenheit zum Heimatland. Gleichzeitig zeichnet er sich durch einen geradlinigen Charakter aus, welcher den Diktaturen dieses Jahrhunderts kritisch gegenüber stand. Als er sich weigerte, für den deutschen Faschismus in den Krieg zu ziehen, hätte ihn das beinahe das Leben gekostet. Faszinierend finde ich, wie er trotz seiner scharfen Kritik an der kommunistischen Diktatur in Rumänien die Verbundenheit mit seinem Heimatland bewahrte. Nach aufwändiger Suche fand ich zum Bildhauer Constantin Antonovici viele interessante Informationen, angefangen von Biografien bis hin zu Katalogen von Kunstauktionen, in denen einige seiner Werke zu finden sind. Danke für diesen Hörerwettbewerb, durch den ich viel über diesen rumänischen Bildhauer erfahren habe. Wenn in Zukunft der Name von Constantin Antonovici fallen sollte, werde ich mich gleich an dieses Preisausschreiben von Radio Rumänien International und das Leben und Werk dieses gro‎ßen Künstlers erinnern.“




    Enric Ballester Burcet aus Spanien argumentierte wie folgt:



    Ich beteiligte mich an dem Hörerwettbewerb, weil mich die rumänische Kultur interessiert und ich mehr darüber erfahren wollte, vor allem über den berühmten Bildhauer Constantin Brâncusi und seine Schüler.“




    Gilles Gautier aus Frankreich schrieb uns Folgendes:



    Ich habe eine Leidenschaft für Geschichte und Geografie. Das Preisausschreiben ermöglicht es mir einmal mehr, Ihr Land näher kennenzulernen. Deshalb nahm ich an dem Hörer-Quiz teil. Ich beteilige mich, weil Ihr es verdient und ich gerne informiert bin.“




    Mohammad Shamim aus Indien begründete seine Teilnahme:



    Rumänien verfügt über ein sehr reiches Kulturerbe. Einfache Worte reichen nicht, um den richtigen Platz Rumäniens auf der Weltkulturkarte zu beschreiben. Es wird behauptet, die Schönheit liege im Auge des Betrachters. Betrachtet man die Skulpturen und Gemälde in Rumänien, stellt man aber fest, dass die Schönheit, in Wirklichkeit, in den Händen der Künstler liegt. Die rumänischen Künstler waren immer sehr kreativ. Die von ihnen gewählten Farbkombinationen sind einzigartig. Rumänische Künstler legen hohen Wert auf die einheimische Kultur, auf Traditionen, drücken dennoch auch europäische Merkmale ihren Kunstwerken auf. Demnach wirken die von rumänischen Künstlern gefertigten Gemälde zeitgenössisch, beinhalten allerdings auch eine traditionelle Dimension. Es ist gro‎ßartig, dass die Rumänen ihre echten kulturellen Werte erkennen und erhalten. Rumänische Kulturerzeugnisse werden aufgrund ihrer Anpassungsfähigkeit im Ausland sehr hoch geschätzt. Ich bedanke mich bei RRI für das spannende Preisausschreiben, das uns die rumänische Bildhauerei näher brachte.“




    Unser treuer Hörer aus Dänemark, Hans Verner Lollike, schrieb uns:



    Bis gegen Mitte der 70er Jahre war Rumänien für mich nur ein Punkt auf der Karte Europas. Zwar kannte ich einige gro‎ßartige Sportler, die an den Olympischen Spielen teilnahmen, aber mehr nicht. Als ich später Vorstandsmitglied im Landesrat der Dänischen Jugend wurde, hatte ich die Gelegenheit, mich an einer Konferenz der Vereinigten Nationen in Bukarest zu beteiligen. Ich habe immer noch viele Erinnerungen von damals […]. Dank eines guten Freundes, Radio Rumänien International, lernte ich einen der grö‎ßten modernen Bildhauer kennen, Constantin Brâncuşi. Ich habe seine Kunstwerke bei jeder Gelegenheit gesucht. Leider ist keines seiner Werke in Dänemark ausgestellt. Vor 10 Jahren hatte ich aber die Gelegenheit, zwei seiner Werke im Metropolitan Museum in New York zu bewundern. Ein paar Jahre später besuchte ich seine Werkstatt in Paris. Alles, was er schuf, war faszinierend. Ich glaube, ein Besuch seines Skulpturen-Ensembles in Târgu Jiu muss unvergesslich sein. Der Grund für meine Teilnahme am Hörer-Quiz ist… Brâncuşi. Ich bemühe mich, an sämtliche von RRI organisierten Preisausschreiben mitzumachen. Denn ich will mehr über Rumänien erfahren. Den gro‎ßen Preis irgendwann zu gewinnen, würde mich übermä‎ßig freuen.“

    Les gagnants du jeu “Constantin Antonovici, génération Brancusi”

    140 ans après la naissance de Constantin Brancusi, le créateur ayant changé lart moderne, RRI sintéresse, tout au long de cette année 2016, à son héritage humain et matériel. Cest pourquoi nous vous avons invités à participer à un jeu-concours consacré à un des disciples les plus intéressants du sculpteur roumain – il sagit de Constantin Antonovici (1911 – 2002), qui a fait une brillante carrière en Europe et aux Etats-Unis. Parmi tous les artistes avec lesquels Brancusi a travaillé, il a été le seul possesseur dune recommandation écrite et signée par le grand sculpteur lui-même.



    Vous avez aimé ce défi artistique – pour preuve les centaines de messages qui nous sont parvenus, mais dont seulement 210 comportaient les réponses correctes.     Winners of the Contest “A Contemporary of Brancusi: Constantin Antonovici”

    Dear friends, Radio Romania International invited you to participate, until January 15th 2016, mailing date, in a new prize-winning contest entitled “A Contemporary of Brancusi: Constantin Antonovici. The contest was devoted to the famous Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi and to one of his most outstanding disciples, Constantin Antonovici (1911-2002), who had a brilliant career in Europe and the US. Of all the artists who worked with Brancusi, Constantin Antonovici was the only one who had a letter of recommendation signed by the great sculptor.



    Many of you participated in our contest and provided 210 correct and complete answers. Thank you for your interest and hope you will take part in RRIs future contests as well.



    The Grand Prize consists in a 7-day trip, for two RRI listeners, between April 15th and 30th 2016, to Gorj County, the birthplace of Constantin Brancusi. As usual you will have to provide for your own transportation to and from Romania and to cover the cost of your visa for Romania, if necessary.



    The contest was organized jointly with the “Constantin Brancusi Research, Documentation and Promotion Centre in Targu Jiu , with the support of several local partners: The Gorj County Council, the Targu Jiu Town Hall, The Gorj and Craiova branches of the Fine Artists Union, the Dolj County Council, the Craiova City Hall, the Gorj Centre for the Promotion of Traditional Culture, the “Marin Sorescu National Theatre in Craiova, the “Maria Tanase Folk Ensemble in Craiova and the Craiova Art Museum.



    The correct answers to the contests questions were presented in RRIs shows and were also available on the stations website and on its Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn profiles.



    The contest ended on January 15th, 2016, mailing date. But before we announce the winners, lets go over the questions and answers once again:

    Jayanta Chakrabarty of India, a listener to RRIs English Service and one of the 1st prize winners of this contest has written: “Romania happens to be one of the few countries in Europe where there is an abundance of creative minds. It is a unique country that has given birth to literary giants, great musicians and outstanding artists. So I was not surprised when RRI’s latest contest featured the world-renowned sculptor Constantin Brancusi and his most devoted and favoured disciple, Constantin Antonovici. The excitement and the beautiful experience to delve into the works of these outstanding Romanian souls prompted me to participate in the competition. I have been a listener to RRIs broadcasts since the early 1970s when it was popularly known as Radio Bucharest. In fact, I have grown alongside RRI from childhood to adulthood. I am grateful to RRI for helping me improve my English. (…) At the start of the 2016 I have high hopes that RRI will continue to update us on the various facets of Romanian life and its vibrant culture.



    Mitul Kansal of India, another listener to the RRI English, and equally a first prize winner has motivated his decision to take part in the contest by saying: “I am a great lover of the modern art created by Constantin Antonovici, who moved to the US in 1953. He possessed an artistic lucidity that allowed him to stylise and simplify in order to find essential forms, just as Brancusi did. (…) Antonovici exhibited in France, Italy, Romania and the US and many private collectors acquired his works. So the reason why am I participating in this contest is very simple: I am a regular listener to RRI and I am very much interested in Romanias culture, history, art, customs, traditions and way of life. I fully believe that RRI is bringing Romania closer to us through its programs, website and various contests.



    A faithful listener to RRIs English broadcast, Martin Rogan from the UK, has written: “I often take part in RRIs contests because I always learn something new by doing so, and the possibility of winning a prize, big or small, is always an attraction. I must say, as a confirmed technophobe, that I only consult websites when there is absolutely no alternative, so I would be lying if I were to say that I followed RRIs online content, or anyone elses for that matter. Much prefer the immediacy of short wave broadcasts especially when the content is interesting and reception is good. With RRI, both of these things apply and my interest in Romania is of long standing anyway. People often study French, Spanish or Italian in this country but fewer study Portuguese and ignorance of the Romanian language in the UK is truly shocking. RRI is a major means of addressing this problem and I hope it continues to do so for many years to come.

    Another faithful listener to RRIs English programmes, Hans Verner Lollike of Denmark has written: “Until mid 1970s Romania was just a spot on the Map of Europe and some extraordinary athletes competing in the Olympic Games. Later, as a board member of the Danish National Youth Council, I got the chance to participate in the NGO- parallel conference to UN Population Conference in Bucharest. I have a whole collection of memories of that time. (…) Thanks to a friend of mine, Radio Romania International, I was introduced to one of the most outstanding sculptors of modern time, Constantin Brancusi. I have been looking for his works all over. Sadly, in Denmark he is not present enough! But 10 years ago, when I had a day on my own in New York, and the Guggenheim Museum was closed, I had luck at the Metropolitan to see two of his works, and a couple of years later, in Paris, I saw his workshop. What is it by Brancusi, always fascinates. (…) A visit to his sculptural ensemble in Targu Jiu would be a lifetime experience.

A fost un concurs dedicat celebrului sculptor Constantin Brâncuşi şi unuia dintre cei mai importanţi discipoli ai săi, Constantin Antonovici (1911-2002), care a avut o strălucită carieră în Europa şi SUA. Dintre toţi artiştii care au lucrat cu Brâncuşi, a fost singurul posesor al unui certificat de recomandare semnat de acesta.




    Concursul a trezit interesul dvs. şi am primit 210 răspunsuri corecte şi complete. Vă mulţumim şi vă invităm să participaţi şi la alte concusuri.




    Marele Premiu vor fi două excursii pentru câte o persoană, de 7 zile (6 nopţi) cu pensiune completă (în perioada 15-30.04.2016) în judeţul Gorj, locul din care a pornit spre lume Brâncuşi.     Constantin Antonovici, a student of Brancusi

    After graduating from the Arts Academy in Iasi in 1939, Constantin Antonovici left the country to work for six months in Ivan Mestrovics studio in Zagreb. In the autumn of 1941, he was admitted at Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Vienna, and in 1947 he settled in Paris, where he met Brancusi, and worked for the next four years in his studio. In 1951 he left for Canada, and in 1954 he moved to New York, to obtain American citizenship in 1959. Critic Mihai Plamadeala tells us more about the work of Constantin Antonovici and the sculptors encounters with famous artists:



    “The owl motif is recurrent in Antonovicis work, in fact he is dubbed the ‘owl sculptor. The four years spent together with the founder of modern sculpture must have left their imprint on Antonovicis outlook on art. But, as Brancusi himself said upon leaving Rodins workshop, ‘nothing grows in the shadow of big trees. The document signed by Constantin Brancusi on May 9, 1951, which reads, ‘I hereby certify that Mr. Constantin Antonovici has great talent in sculpture and arduously works at it is atypical and, in my view, it can hardly be authenticated. Otherwise, I can see no influence of Brancusis thinking in the works of Antonovici. Antonovici focused on animal shapes. He is a sculptor who searched for guidance, and in the studios where he worked he sought to learn, to improve, to perfect his skills. What matters is that he didnt copy or mimic Brancusis work, and this is a proof of common-sense and good measure, which is worth nothing.



    Critic Mihai Plamadeala also reviewed for us the most important exhibitions and works by Constantin Antonovici:



    “The most notable exhibitions of Constantin Antonovicis works were organized by several galleries in Paris. Worth mentioning are also the ones at Corcoran Arts Gallery in New York, and he also had exhibitions in Philadelphia. He was also awarded an important prize by the Accademia Italia. One of his major works is a large-scale statue made for the tomb of Bishop William T. Manning. In Romania, the sculptor made a bust of Voltaire and the altarpiece for the cathedral in Jimbolia, I dont know whether these works are officially included in the national heritage list. Works by Antonovici can be found especially in private collections, but many others are on display in galleries in the USA.



    Doina Uricariu and Vladimir Bulat put together a catalogue of the works of Constantin Antonovici. Entitled “Antonovici: 1911-2002: Sculptor on Two Continents, the bilingual, Romanian-English volume was released by Universalia Publishers in the US. Here is art critic Mihai Plamadeala again:



    “The first merit of the monograph edited by Doina Uricariu and Vladimir Bulat, with support from Steven Benedict, is that it aims at bringing back home a Romanian-born international artist who is little known by the larger audience. The book, which is in fact a ‘catalogue raisonne, brings information about the life and activity of sculptor Constantin Antonovici, who is entitled to finding the right place in Romanian art. Until then, the book, which is the main means by which Constantin Antonovici can get to be known in our country, facilitates three types of approach, as it is an artistic biography, a presentation of the artists work and also establishes the connection with famous names and internationally acknowledged trends. Whether there is a connection between Antonovicis owls and Picasso, Henry Moore or Juan Miro…thats debatable. Beyond that, Antonovici is one of the sculptors who deserve to and must be known in Romania.



    If the central theme of his work was the owl, which he presented in various shapes and hypostases, Constantin Antonovici also authored other pieces of art, such as the 2-meter high cross on the western façade of the St. John the Divine Cathedral in New York, on Amsterdam Avenue. Also, he is the author of the bust of president Dwight Eisenhower at the White House.

    Constantin Antonovici hat 1939 die Hochschule für Bildende Künste im ostrumänischen Iaşi absolviert. Im darauffolgenden Jahr verlässt er Rumänien, um ein Jahr in der Werkstatt des berühmten kroatischen Bildhauers Ivan Meštrović in Zagreb zu arbeiten. Im Herbst 1941 beginnt er das Studium an der Wiener Akademie der Bildenden Künste, 1947 lässt sich Antonovici in Paris nieder, wo er den Bildhauer Constantin Brâncuşi kennenlernt. Der junge Künstler verbringt vier Jahre als Lehrling des berühmten rumänischen Bildhauers. 1951 wandert er nach Kanada aus und lässt sich 3 Jahre später in New York nieder. 1959 erhält er die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft. Antonovici hat als Nachwuchs-Bildhauer die Chance genossen, berühmte Künstler kennenzulernen. Der Kunstkritiker Mihai Plămădeală über die Kunst von Constantin Antonovici:



    Das Motiv der Eule kommt immer wieder in den Werken von Antonovici vor. Nicht zufällig wurde er als »Bildhauer der Eulen« bekannt. Die vier Jahre, die er neben Brâncuşi, dem Vater der modernen Bildhauerei, verbrachte, haben seine künstlerische Auffassung deutlich beeinflusst. Wie einmal Brâncuşi sagte: Es wächst nichts im Schatten gro‎ßer Bäume. Die Urkunde, die Constantin Brâncuşi am 9. Mai 1951 unterschrieb und in der folgendes steht: ‚Ich, der Unterzeichnende, bestätige hiermit, dass Herr Constantin Antonovici ein äu‎ßerst begabter Bildhauer ist und sehr eifrig dabei arbeitet‘ — ist eher untypisch für den berühmten Bildhauer und kann doch nicht als Anerkennung betrachtet werden. Ansonsten ist meiner Ansicht nach nichts aus der Denkweise von Brâncuşi in den Werken von Antonovici wiederzufinden. Antonovici ist ein Tierbildhauer. Er ist zudem ein Bildhauer, der seine Meister suchte, und in den Werkstätten, die er besuchte, wollte er ständig etwas Neues lernen, verschiede Sachen selber herausfinden und sich vervollständigen. Er hat Brâncuşi nicht nachgeahmt und das ist ein guter Beweis für seinen gesunden Menschenverstand und seine Bescheidenheit.“




    Unser Gesprächspartner wirft im Folgenden einen Blick auf die wichtigsten Ausstellungen und Werke von Constantin Antonovici:



    Gro‎ße Ausstellungen von Constantin Antonovici finden in einigen Pariser Galerien statt. Ich erwähne zudem die Ausstellung in der Galerie Corcoran Arts in New York, seine Werke wurden auch in Philadelphia ausgestellt. Er wurde mit dem Preis der italienischen Kunstakademie Accademia Italia geehrt. Eines seiner Werke ist die monumentale Skulptur, die er fürs Grab des Erzbischofs William T. Manning schuf. In Rumänien hatte er die Büste Voltaires und den Altar der Kathedrale in Jimbolia (Hatzfeld) geschaffen. Einen Gro‎ßteil seiner Werke sind in privaten Ausstellungen zu finden, einige werden in den USA auch in Galerien ausgestellt.“




    Die Schriftstellerin Doina Uricariu hat in Zusammenarbeit mit Vladimir Bulat ein Katalogbuch verfasst, das die Leser in die künstlerische Welt von Constantin Antonovici einführt. Der zweisprachige Band Antonovici: 1911-2002: Sculptor on Two Continents /Sculptor pe două continente“ (Bildhauer auf zwei Kontinenten) erschien im US-amerikanischen Verlag Universalia Publishers. Dazu der Kunstkritiker Mihai Plămădeală:



    Ich finde es lobenswert, dass die von Doina Uricariu und Vladimir Bulat mit Hilfe von Steven Benedict verfasste Monographie sich zum Ziel setzt, einen internationalen Bildhauer rumänischer Herkunft nach Hause zu bringen. Constantin Antonovici ist dem rumänischen Publikum wenig bekannt. Das Buch ist ein sogenannter Catalogue raisonné, ein Verzeichnis der Werke des Bildhauers, erstellt nach wissenschaftlichen Standards, das den rumänischen und amerikanischen Lesern das Leben und die Schöpfung des bildenden Künstlers nahe bringt. Constantin Antonivici verdient einen besonderen Platz in der rumänischen Kunst. Das Buch vermittelt wichtige Informationen über Constantin Antonovici — aus drei Perspektiven: die künstlerische Biographie, die Präsentation seiner Werke und schlie‎ßlich der rumänische Bildhauer im Verhältnis zu berühmten Künstlern und gro‎ßen Kunstströmungen. Ob die Eulen Antonovicis mit den Eulen Picassos, Henry Moores oder Juan Miros in Verbindung gebracht werden können, ist fraglich. Antonovici bleibt ohnehin einer der Bildhauer, die eine besondere Anerkennung und einen besonderen Platz in der rumänischen Kunst verdienen.“




    Selbst wenn die Eule das zentrale Motiv seiner Kunst war und sie in verschiedenen Abbildungen vorkommt, hat sich Constantin Antononici auch einer anderen Kategorie von Skulpturen gewidmet, einige davon seien hier noch erwähnt: das zwei Meter hohe Steinkreuz, das auf der Nordfassade der New Yorker Kathedrale St. John The Divine auf der Amsterdam Avenue steht. Constantin Antonovici hat auch die Büste des US-Präsidenten Dwight Eisenhower geschaffen, die im Wei‎ßen Haus ausgestellt ist.

    Sorti de lAcadémie dart de Iaşi en 1939, Constantin Antonovici quitte le pays lannée suivante, pour travailler pendant six mois dans latelier dIvan Mestrovic, à Zagreb. A lautomne de 1941, il entre à lAkademie der Bildenden Kunste de Vienne, et en 1947, il sétablit à Paris. Là, il fait la connaissance de Brâncuşi, et passe quatre ans dans latelier de ce dernier. En 1951, il émigre au Canada ; 1954 le retrouve à New York. En 1959, il devient citoyen américain.



    Le critique Mihai Plămădeală parle de lart de Constantin Antonovici et de la chance du sculpteur de rencontrer des artistes célèbres. « Le motif du hibou apparaît de manière récurrente dans la création dAntonovici ; en fait, il est même reconnu comme « le sculpteur des hiboux ». Le fait davoir passé quatre années aux côtés du père de la sculpture moderne ne pouvait ne pas laisser de traces dans la conscience dAntonovici. Mais, comme laffirmait Brâncuşi un jour, rien ne pousse à lombre des grands arbres. Le document signé par Brâncuşi le 9 mai 1951, dans lequel il écrit « je soussigné atteste du fait que monsieur Constantin Antonovici a beaucoup de talent en sculpture et la travaille avec acharnement » est atypique et je crois que cela ne tient pas debout pour la reconnaissance ou lhomologation. Sans cela, aucune influence de la pensée de Brâncuşi dans la création dAntonovici, de mon point de vue. Antonovici est un sculpteur animalier. Il est également un sculpteur qui a cherché ses maîtres, et dans les ateliers quil a fréquentés, il a cherché à apprendre, à se parachever. Limportant, cest quil na pas copié Brâncuşi, il a refusé la pastiche, et cest une preuve de bon sens, de bon sens et de mesure, fait quil convient de prendre en compte. »



    Le critique Mihai Plămădeală passe en revue les expositions et créations les plus importantes portant la signature de Constantin Antonovici. « Les expositions les plus importantes de Constantin Antonovici ont été organisées dans quelques galeries parisiennes. Je mentionnerais aussi celles de la galerie Corcoran Arts de New York, et il a également exposé à Philadelphie. On pourrait également mentionner dans son palmarès le prix décerné par lAccademia Italia. Un de ses travaux exposés est la statue monumentale réalisée pour le tombeau de lévêque William T. Manning. En Roumanie, le sculpteur avait réalisé un buste de Voltaire et lautel de la cathédrale de Jimbolia, je ne sais pas si ces œuvres figurent au patrimoine national. Les œuvres signées Antonovici sont également à retrouver dans des collections privées, mais beaucoup dentre elles apparaissent aussi dans des galeries américaines. »



    Doina Uricariu et Vladimir Bulat ont réalisé un livre-catalogue dintroduction dans lunivers artistique de Constantin Antonovici. Le volume, sous le titre « Antonovici: 1911-2002: Sculptor on Two Continents » (Sculpteur sur deux continents) est en édition bilingue, anglais – roumain, et il est paru aux Editions Universalia Publishers USA. Mihai Plămădeală, critique dart. « Le premier mérite de la monographie rédigée par Doina Uricariu et Vladimir Bulat, avec le grand soutien de Steven Benedict, est quil se propose dapporter chez soi un sculpteur international dorigine roumaine, peu connu du public large. Le livre, en fait un catalogue raisonné, rend possible, dans une première étape, la connaissance de la vie et de lactivité du sculpteur Constantin Antonovici, à qui il serait salutaire que la postérité accorde une place dans lart roumain, en parfaite connaissance de cause avec son art. Avant la parution du livre, qui reste le principal instrument de connaissance de Constantin Antonovici en Roumanie, lon distingue trois niveaux dapproche. Celui de la biographie artistique, celui de la présentation de lœuvre, et enfin celui de la mise en relation avec des noms célèbres et courants reconnus à linternational. Sil existe des relations entre les hiboux dAntonovici et Picasso, Henry Moore ou Juan Miro est discutable. Au-delà de cela, Antonovici est un des sculpteurs qui méritent et qui doivent être connus en Roumanie. »



    Même si le motif central de son œuvre a été le hibou, quil a représenté sous des hypostases différentes, Constantin Antonovici a également réalisé dautres types de créations, telles que la croix en pierre de deux mètres de hauteur sur la façade ouest de la cathédrale new yorkaise St. John The Divine, sur lAmsterdam Avenue. Constantin Antonovici est aussi lauteur du buste du président Dwight Eisenhower, à a Maison Blanche.

    Elle relie la Transylvanie
    au sud du pays. Avant 2009, la route n’était pas pavée, étant empruntée
    uniquement par le amateurs de 4×4. C’est pourquoi, bien que ce soit un endroit
    spectaculaire, Transalpina est moins connue des touristes.






    Le 2
    novembre, Transalpina a été officiellement fermée pour la saison d’hiver, pour
    être rouverte l’été prochain, affirme Sabin Cornoiu, directeur du Service
    départemental des sauveteurs en montagne de Gorj: «Tout le monde qui est passé
    par ici le dit : c’est la route la plus belle de Roumanie. Les paysages
    sont extraordinaires, avec des montagnes moins hautes mais très belles. C’est
    valable pour ses deux côtés : le trajet de reliant les villes de Sebes et
    Obârsia Lotrului en Transylvanie ou bien celui entre Obârsia Lotruui et Rânca,
    qui traverse les monts Parâng. Le côté nord de ces montagnes est très beau,
    comparable aux grandes montagnes d’Europe. Il n’y a pas si longtemps que ça,
    toutes ces beautés n’étaient accessibles qu’aux touristes qui faisaient des
    excursions à pied».







    Transalpina est fermée chaque année lors de la première
    chute de neige abondante, parce qu’à l’heure actuelle l’accès des voitures
    pendant l’hiver n’y est pas justifié. Vu qu’elle atteint de grandes altitudes,
    les couches de neige sont énormes et rendent la route impraticable. Il en va de
    même pour le Trasfagarasan, une autre route superbe qui traverse les monts
    Fagaras. Quelle est la plus belle des deux? Sabin Cornoiu répond: « Nous,
    les habitants du département de Gorj, nous estimons que tant que la Roumanie ne
    dispose que de deux routes de ce type, il n’y a pas de concurrence entre les
    deux. Elles sont tout aussi belles. Certes, cela nous réjouit beaucoup
    d’entendre les touristes dire que Transalpina a des paysages plus beaux. Et
    c’est justifié, je dirais, car le trajet a été très bien choisi : il y a
    moins de vallées et plus de sommets, d’où les paysages spectaculaires ».







    En prenant la route Transalpina, on arrive assez vite au
    sommet des monts Parâng. Après avoirs traversé le sommet, une des plus belles
    zones de lacs glaciaires s’ouvre devant les yeux des
    touristes. Sabin Cornoiu : « Je vous assure que vous trouverez des
    endroits à part au département de Gorj. La beauté des paysages vient du fait
    qu’il n’ont pas été touchés par l’homme. Et j’aimerais qu’ils restent ainsi. En
    plus, les gens sont très accueillants. Tout cela garantit des souvenirs
    inoubliables pour ceux qui nous rendent visite».








    Voilà

    A new competition on RRI – A Contemporary of Brancusi: Constantin Antonovici

    We travel today to south-western Romania, to Gorj county. The mountainous area in the northern part of Gorj is the perfect destination for adventure seekers and photographers looking for spectacular landscapes. If you don’t like the heights, though, the area is also ideal for cultural tourism. Constantin Brancusi, the artist viewed as the founder of modern sculpture, was born in Gorj county, in the village of Hobita. Not far from here, in Targu Jiu, you can find his unique outdoor ensemble of sculptures. While in Gorj, you can also visit the area’s century-old Orthodox monasteries. Doru Strambulescu, the head of the Constantin Brancusi Research, Documentation and Promotion Centre in Targu Jiu told us what makes Gorj county an ideal holiday destination irrespective of the time of the year:



    “Gorj county, in particular the area at the foot of the mountains, provides a whole range of opportunities for tourism, from cultural to religious and adventure travel. There are many sites worth visiting here, beginning with the town of Targu Jiu, the home of Brancusi’s landmark ensemble. Travelers to the region can also visit the monasteries at the foot of the mountains, such as Lainici, Tismana, Polovragi and Crasna. These monasteries are very beautiful and very old and still preserve the old monastic and Orthodox traditions. Other places worth visiting are natural sites such as Polovragi Cave, the Women’s Cave in Baia de Fier, the Galben Gorges and the Sohodol Gorges. Gorj is also crossed by Transalpina, one of the most spectacular high-altitude roads that runs through Parang Mountains.”



    One good thing about Gorj is that unlike more popular tourist regions in Romania, you can always find good accommodation here, irrespective of the season. Doru Strambulescu again:


    “There is a large number of hotels and guesthouses in Targu Jiu, of all sizes and for all budgets. We have four and three star hotels, as well as guesthouses in an area close to the town, so that visitors can easily find pleasant accommodation.”



    The Brancusi Centre also has a tourist information office and a shop, says Doru Strambulescu, the centre’s manager:


    “Both Romanian and foreign visitors can find here lots of material about the Brancusi outdoor ensemble. There is also a visitors’ book where Romanian and foreign tourists can write down their impressions. Having read them, I can tell you they are very positive. Targu Jiu is a clean and elegant town located at the foot of the mountains.”



    In the 1930s Constantin Brancusi was already a mature artist, famous not only in Europe but also in the United States. In fact, his works had started selling well in the US ever since the 1920s, as he had many solo and group exhibitions there. He was well promoted in art galleries and his works’ value on the art market increased considerably.



    However, there was something that bothered him. He had not managed to create something important for his country, which he had left at the age of 28, to go to Paris. So he gladly accepted the proposal made by the Gorj Women’s National League to build a monument in Targu Jiu dedicated to the Gorj heroes that lost their lives in WWI, during the battles in Jiu. Adina Andritoiu, an advisor with the Constantin Brancusi Research, Documentation and Promotion Centre, tells us more about the open-air sculptural ensemble in Targu Jiu:



    “This ensemble is very well known, but it’s important that people come and take a closer look at each of its pieces. Brancusi placed them in a certain order, each with its own meaning. Seeing them in this order that starts with the Table of Silence and continues with the Gate of the Kiss and Saint Apostles’ Church and ends with the Endless Column can give visitors a better indication of Brancusi’s genius. In 1937 and 1938, when Brancusi created the monument, the town was less crowded and less developed. However, this sculptural ensemble, which was built on a site stretching from the banks of Jiu River to the surrounding hill where the Endless Column is located, created in fact an axis along which the town later developed and which links the two essential points of the town’s center.”



    Visitors come from all the corners of the world, says Adina Andritoiu, an advisor with the Constantin Brâncuşi Centre for Research, Documentation and Promotion:



    “Last year actually, the winner of the contest organized by RRI – Milita Petrascu, a Contemporary of Brâncuşi, – was from France. He was really happy. It was his first time in Romania. He was really enthusiastic about what he could see here. Of course, we accompanied him to the most important tourist objectives in Gorj County. We went on a road trip on the Transalpina motorway, we visited the monasteries of Gorj County. I also had the opportunity of talking to two Australians. They were members of a philharmonic orchestra, and had come to Bucharest for a concert. They had come to Targu Jiu particularly to see the works of Constantin Brâncuşi. They had heard about him and knew a lot, but they really wanted to see the works for themselves. And there will be others like them. Tourists come in organized groups, but also by themselves, sometimes bringing their families along, seeking to learn more about this part of Romania, which they read about or learned from your shows and which they want to see with their own eyes”.

    Viajamos hoy al distrito de Gorj, en el sudoeste de Rumanía. Las
    montañas, situadas en el norte del distrito, son el destino idóneo para los
    aficionados al turismo de aventura o a la fotografía, ya que en Gorj podrán
    disfrutar de muchos paisajes de ensueño. Si no les gustan las montañas, pueden
    practicar el turismo cultural. El escultor Constantin Brâncuşi, considerado el
    fundador del arte moderno, nació en la localidad de Hobiţa, en el distrito de
    Gorj. Muy cerca de este lugar se encuentra la ciudad de Târgu Jiu, donde se
    puede visitar un conjunto escultural al aire libre de carácter singular. En el
    distrito de Gorj también se pueden visitar algunos monasterios ortodoxos muy
    antiguos.

    Gorj, sobre todo las
    montañas de Gorj, ofrecen numerosas oportunidades para los visitantes: el
    turismo cultural, religioso o de aventura. Hay muchos lugares que se pueden
    visitar, como la ciudad de Târgu Jiu, donde está ubicada la obra maestra de
    Brâncuşi: el Conjunto Monumental. Los turistas que vienen a Gorj pueden visitar
    los monasterios situados en las colinas, como el Monasterio Lainici, el
    Monasterio Tismana, el Polovragi o el Crasna. Contamos
    con unos monasterios muy hermosos y muy antiguos, que conservan la tradición
    monacal ortodoxa. Además, pueden ver toda una serie de monumentos de la
    naturaleza: La Cueva de Polovragi, la Cueva de las Mujeres
    de Baia de Fier    , Cheile Galbenului y Cheile Sohodolului. La Transalpina,
    que atraviesa la zona de Gorj, es la carretera más alta y más bonita de los
    montes Parâng.


    Otra ventaja que tiene
    esta zona es que, a diferencia de otras zonas más promovidas de Rumanía,
    nosotros no tenemos problemas con las plazas de alojamiento, incluso en la
    temporada alta.





    Târgu Jiu cuenta con muchos hoteles y
    pensiones de varias capacidades. Hay pensiones y hoteles para todos los
    bolsillos. Tenemos hoteles de 4 o 3 estrellas y muchas pensiones en el centro o
    en las afueras de la ciudad, por lo tanto los turistas podrán encontrar plazas
    libres para alojarse.

    Los

    Brancusi. Nuestro centro cuenta con un Libro de Honor de nuestra ciudad en el
    que los turistas rumanos y extranjeros pueden apuntar sus opiniones, que son
    casi todas positivas. Nuestra ciudad es
    preciosa, dado que está situada en las faldas de las montañas. El conjunto de
    Brâncuşi pertenece al ayuntamiento de Târgu Jiu y es administrado por el Centro
    Brâncuşi. Les puedo decir que todos los turistas que han visitado Târgu Jiu se
    han quedado con recuerdos muy bonitos. .




    En los años 30,
    Constantin Brâncuşi era un artista maduro y muy conocido no solo en Europa,
    sino también en América. Prácticamente, desde los años 20 del siglo pasado,
    empezó a vender sus creaciones al otro lado del océano. Tuvo muchas
    exposiciones personales y de grupo en EE. UU. Fue muy bien promovido en las
    galerías de arte y su valor como artista aumentó muchísimo. Sin embargo, algo
    le faltaba. No había logrado crear una obra en su país de origen, dado que se
    había ido desde muy joven, con solo 28
    años, para trabajar en París. La propuesta enviada por la Liga Nacional de las
    Mujeres de Gorj, de crear un monumento en Târgu Jiu dedicado a los héroes
    caídos en la Primera Guerra Mundial, en la batalla de Jiu, fue recibida con
    alegría por el genial escultor. Adina Andriţoiu, consejera en el Centro
    Constantin Brâncuşi, nos amplía más detalles sobre el conjunto monumental al
    aire libre de Târgu Jiu.





    Este conjunto es muy conocido, pero lo
    importante es que la gente venga a ver
    todos los elementos que lo componen. Estos elementos han sido concebidos por
    Constantin Brâncuşi por un cierto orden con un significado especial. La contemplación
    del conjunto con sus esculturas en este orden, desde La Mesa del Silencio, La
    Puerta del Beso, pasando por la Iglesia
    Sfintii Apostoli y hasta La Columna Sin Fin ofrece al visitante la dimensión
    exacta del genio de Constantin Brâncuşi. En 1937 y 1938, cuando Brâncuşi creó
    este conjunto, la ciudad era más pequeña, tenía menos habitantes, pero la
    ubicación de este monumento entre la orilla del Jiu y la colina donde está
    ubicada La Columna Sin Fin o La Columna Infinita prácticamente significó construir
    un eje crucial para el desarrollo de la ciudad y que realizó la conexión entre
    dos lugares importantes en el centro de nuestra ciudad.

    El año
    pasado, el ganador del concurso Contemporáneo de Brâncuşi, organizado por RRI,
    era de Francia. Se ha quedado muy contento con todo. Era su primera visita a
    Rumanía. Se ha declarado impresionado
    por todos los lugares visitados. Nosotros fuimos sus guías y así pudo visitar
    los más importantes lugares turísticos
    de Gorj, como la Transalpina o los
    monasterios de Gorj. También he tenido la oportunidad de conversar con dos
    australianos. Habían venido a Bucarest con su orquesta sinfónica para dar un
    concierto y querían visitar Târgu Jiu, para ver las esculturas de Brâncuşi. Ya
    sabían muchas cosas sobre él, conocían su obra, pero querían verla en realidad.
    Y los ejemplos pueden continuar. Tenemos grupos organizados y también familias
    o personas solas que quieren conocer esta zona de Rumanía, porque han leído
    sobre este lugar o han escuchado sus programas de radio, y quieren venir a
    visitarla.
