    STATEMENT The president of Romania Klaus Iohannis is one of the 17 heads of state to sign a joint statement pleading for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. It is time for the war to end and this deal is the necessary starting point, the statement reads. The signatories call on both parties to agree to the US president Joe Biden’s plan, which provides for a 6-week ceasefire in a first stage, accompanied by an Israeli withdrawal from the densely populated areas of Gaza, and a hostage-prisoner exchange. In a second stage, whose details are yet to be set, a permanent end of hostilities and the release of all hostages would take place.

     

    WAGES The government of Romania Thursday approved an increase of national minimum wages to roughly EUR 740 as of July 1. Over 1.8 million employees are estimated to benefit from this measure. The EUR 40 tax deduction for minimum wages has also been raised to EUR 60. The government also passed a bill amending the Romanian Citizenship Act. According to the justice ministry, the measure was required in order to modernize the current legislative framework, to facilitate Romania’s participation in the US Visa Waiver programme, and to help complete benchmarks in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The new provisions concern the digitization of procedures, so that the application stages may be followed online, the introduction of a citizenship card, and the use of biometric identifiers such as face and fingerprints.

     

    D-DAY Scores of heads of state and government celebrated in Paris on Thursday the 80th anniversary of the Allied Normandy landings, a decisive moment in defeating Nazi Germany in WWII. The US president, Joe Biden, said Ukraine was invaded by a tyrant and promised his country and NATO would stand strong with Kyiv for as long as necessary in this conflict initiated by Russia. He vowed that the free world would not “surrender to bullies.” Attending the ceremonies in France were also King Charles and the French president Emanuel Macron.  They paid tribute to the 73,000 British troops who took part in the landings. Also present were WWII veterans, many of them over 100 years of age. Locals as well as lots of tourists were in attendance. Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, was not invited to take part because of his role in the invasion of Ukraine.

     

    VOTE Polling stations opened on Thursday in the Netherlands, the first country to vote in the elections for the European Parliament due over June 6 and 9. Roughly 370 million people are expected to vote in all the 27 EU member states in the following days. Analysts are forecasting a rise of far-right and Euro-sceptical parties amid frustrations caused by the rising cost of living, migration and green policies that are getting more and more unpopular. Like in most EU countries, in Romania the vote for the European Parliament is due on Sunday, concurrently with the local elections. Romania gets 33 seats in the European Parliament.

     

    BOOK FAIR Until June 16th, Romania will be attending the 83rd edition of the Madrid Book Fair with a national stand and 20 literary events. This has been Romania’s 13th participation in this large-scale event staged by the Romanian Cultural Institute through the National Book Centre and the Romanian Cultural Institute in Madrid, with support from the Ministry of Culture and the Romanian Embassy in Spain. Among the protagonists of the events there are writers Gabriela Adameşteanu, Eugen Barz, Aura Christi, Nichita Danilov, Cristian Fulaş, Miguel Gane, Stejărel Olaru, Radu Paraschivescu, Radmila Popovici, Andreea Răsuceanu and Radio Romania Journalist Corina Sabău.

     

    TENNIS The Romanian-Ukrainian pair Gabriela Ruse/Marta Kostyuk qualified without playing in the semis of the doubles contest in Roland Garros as Russians Mirra Andreeva and Vera Zvonareva failed to attend the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Ruse and Kostyuk have won a check of EUR 148,000 and 780 WTA points. This is the second Grand Slam semi-final for Ruse and Kostyuk after the Australian Open last year. In the semis Ruse and her partner will be playing the all-Italian pair, Jasmine Paolini/Sara Errani.

     

    FOOTBALL Romania’s football team will be up against Lichtenstein in Bucharest on Friday night in their last training game before the European Championship in Germany. In another friendly on Tuesday our footballers managed a goalless draw against neighbouring Bulgaria. In Group E of Euro 2024, Romania will be playing Ukraine on June 17 in Munich, Belgium on June 22 in Cologne and Slovakia in Frankfurt 4 days later. Officials of the football federation in Bucharest say they expect a large number of Romanian football fans to attend, whether residents in Germany or in other Western European countries. Romania’s last participation in a European football tournament was in 2016 and in the World Cup in 1998. (AMP, bill)

    Der rumänische Staatspräsident Klaus Iohannis hat am Mittwoch nach Konsultationen mit den Partei-Chefs über das Ergebnis des Referendums vom 26. Mai zu Justizfragen erklärt, er lade die politischen Parteien ein, einen Pakt zur Konsolidierung der europäischen Richtung Rumäniens zu unterzeichnen. Das Dokument bezieht sich auf die Umsetzung der Ergebnisse des Referendums durch Gesetze, um die Empfehlungen der Venedig-Kommission und der Europäischen Kommission in Betracht zu nehmen. Der Landespräsident fügte hinzu, er schlage vor, dass diejenigen, die den Pakt unterzeichnen, verpflichtend sind, in die Gesetzgebung die notwendigen Maßnahmen für die Einhaltung des Stimmrechtes sowohl im In- als auch im Ausland einzutragen. Die Erklärung kam nach den Gesprächen, die der Staataschef mit Vertretern der PSD, ALDE, PMP, ProEuropa und der Minderheiten führte. Am Dienstag, dem ersten Tag der Beratungen, war Klaus Iohannis mit den Chefs der PNL, USR und der UDMR zusammengekommen.



    Papst Franziskus hat am Mittwoch auf dem Petersplatz seine allgemeine Audienz seinem jüngsten historischen dreitägigen Besuch in Rumänien gewidmet. Der Papst sprach im Vatikan über all die verschiedenen Momente seiner Reise nach Bukarest, Iasi, Sumuleu Ciuc und Blaj und verwies auf die Bedeutung der Seligsprechung von sieben griechisch-katholischen Bischöfen und sein Treffen mit Vertretern der Roma-Gemeinschaft in Blaj.



    Die Weltbank hat ihre Prognose für das Wachstum der rumänischen Wirtschaft gegenüber ihrer Prognose vom Januar um 0,1% revidiert, so der am Mittwoch veröffentlichte Bericht über die globalen Wirtschaftsaussichten. Die Weltbank erwartet auch für 2020 und 2021 ein Wachstum des rumänischen BIP von 3,3 % bzw. 3,1 %, das gegenüber der vorherigen Prognose um 0,2 % bzw. 0,3 % ansteigt.



    16 Länder, darunter Großbritannien, die USA, Frankreich und Deutschland, haben eine gemeinsame Erklärung zum 75. Jahrestag des D-Day unterzeichnet, als alliierte Truppen während des Zweiten Weltkriegs an den Stränden der Normandie landeten. In dieser Erklärung verpflichten sich die Führer dieser Staaten, zusammenzuarbeiten, um Demokratie, Toleranz und Rechtsstaatlichkeit zu unterstützen. An den Feierlichkeiten in Portsmouth, im Süden Englands, nehmen Vertreter aller Staaten, deren Soldaten an der Operation Overlord beteiligt waren, sowie 300 Kriegsveteranen teil. Am 6. Juni 1944 landeten 160.000 Briten, Amerikaner, Kanadier, Franzosen und andere Nationalitäten, aus denen die alliierten Truppen bestanden, in der von den Nazis besetzten Normandie. Auf beiden Seiten wurden Tausende getötet, aber die Landung war ein Erfolg und markierte den Beginn des Endes der nationalsozialistischen deutschen Truppen in Westeuropa.



    WETTER: Eine Warnung Stufe Gelb für instabiles Wetter ist in 26 Bezirken bis heute Abend in Kraft. Es werden Schauer und sintflutartige Regenfälle erwartet, begleitet von Blitzschlägen, starkem Wind und Hagel. Flüsse und die Donau sind noch immer von Überflutungen und Überschwemmungen bedroht. Für den gesamten rumänischen Abschnitt der Donau wurden in den nächsten zwei Wochen Warnungen Stufe orange und rot für Überschwemmungen ausgerufen. Nach den jüngsten Extremwetterereignissen wurden 159 Städte und Dörfer in 28 Landkreisen und der Hauptstadt Bukarest von schlechtem Wetter heimgesucht, wobei mehrere hundert Häuser, Nebengebäude, Höfe, Keller und 21 Straßen überflutet wurden. Auf mehreren National- und Kreisstraßen wurde der Verkehr aufgrund von Erdrutschen, angesammeltem Oberflächenwasser und Ablagerungen auf der Straße vorübergehend unterbrochen.



    SPORT: Die Titelverteidigerin und drittplatzierte Simona Halep trifft heute im Viertelfinale von Roland Garros auf die junge Amerikanerin Amanda Anisimova, Welt Nr. 51. Dies ist das erste Grand Slam Viertelfinale von Anisimova. Der Gewinner trifft auf den Gewinner zwischen dem US-Spieler und der Nummer 14 der Welt Madison Keys und dem australischen Spieler und der Nummer 8 der Welt Ashleigh Barty.

    Referendum.
    Talks continue in Bucharest between president Klaus Iohannis and the parliamentary parties to agree on a way to
    put into practice the result of the referendum on justice held on the 26th
    of May. The president has talks today with the People’s Movement Party, the
    Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, ProRomania, the representatives of ethnic
    minorities and the Social Democratic Party. On Tuesday, on the first day of
    consultations, he met the leaders of the National Liberal Party, the Save
    Romania Union and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania.
    President Iohannis emphasised that a referendum on the revision of the
    Constitution should be held as soon as possible and that it could be held on
    the same day as one of the upcoming elections, whether presidential, local or
    parliamentary. The Liberals’ leader Ludovic Orban said the Liberals fully back
    the president in his move to revise the Constitution. The president of the Save
    Romania Union Dan Barna believes the country’s Constitution needs a more
    comprehensive reform, while the president of the Democratic Union of Ethnic
    Hungarians in Romania Kelemen Hunor has come up with a radical revision,
    proposing to restrict entirely the government’s powers to issue emergency
    orders unless in exceptional situations such as war and natural disasters.




    Pope visit. Pope Francis dedicated his
    general audience in St. Peter’s Square today to his recent historic 3-day visit
    to Romania. The pontiff spoke at the Vatican about all the different moments of
    his trip to Bucharest, Iasi, Sumuleu Ciuc and Blaj, referring to the importance
    of the beatification of seven Greek-Catholic bishops and his meeting with
    representatives of the Roma community in Blaj.




    Economy. The World Bank has revised
    its forecast about the growth of the Romanian economy up by 0.1% compared with
    its January forecast, according to its Global Economic Prospects report
    published on Wednesday. The World Bank also expects a 3.3% and 3.1% growth in
    Romania’s GDP in 2020 and 2021, respectively, up 0.2% and 0.3%, respectively,
    compared with the previous forecast.




    D-Day. 16 countries, including
    Britain, the US, France and Germany have signed a joint declaration on the 75th
    anniversary of D-Day, when allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy
    during WWII. In this declaration, the leaders of these states pledge to work
    together to support democracy, tolerance and the rule of law. The festivities
    in Portsmouth, in the south of England, are attended by representatives of all
    states whose soldiers were involved in operation Overlord, as well as 300 war
    veterans. On the 6th of June 1944, 160,000 British, American,
    Canadian, French and of other nationalities that made up the allied troops
    landed in Nazi-occupied Normandy. Thousands were killed on both sides, but the
    landing was a success and marked the beginning of the end for the Nazi German
    troops in western Europe.


    Weather. A yellow code alert for
    unstable weather is in place today in 26 counties until this evening. Showers
    and torrential rain are expected, accompanied by lighting, strong wind and
    hail. Rivers and the Danube are still at risk of overflowing, leading to
    flooding. Orange and red code alerts for flooding have been issued for the next
    two weeks for the entire Romanian section of the Danube. According to the
    latest toll, 159 towns and villages in 28 counties and the capital Bucharest
    have been affected by bad weather, with several hundred houses, outbuildings,
    courtyards, cellars and 21 streets being flooded. Travel has been temporarily
    disrupted on several national and county roads due to landslides, accumulated
    surface water and debris on the road.




    Roland Garros. Defending champion
    and third seed this year Simona Halep today faces the young American player
    Amanda Anisimova, world no. 51, in the
    quarterfinals at Roland Garros. This is Anisimova’s first Grand
    Slam quarterfinal. The winner will face the winner between the US player and
    world no. 14 Madison Keys and the Australian player and world no. 8 Ashleigh
    Barty.

    REFERENDUM President Klaus Iohannis initiated consultations with parliamentary parties on implementing the outcome of the May 26 referendum on the judiciary. On Tuesday the head of state had talks with the National Liberal Party, Save Romania Union and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania. The Liberals announced they support any other initiatives required for the decision expressed by citizens in the referendum to be put into practice. The Liberal leader Ludovic Orban believes public debates on the justice laws should be resumed. The Save Romania Union leader Dan Barna emphasised that the constitutional reform should be broader, and include additional aspects to the ones covered by the referendum. The head of the Union of Ethnic Hungarians, Kelemen Hunor, also supports amending the Constitution to ban emergency ordinances in this field. On Wednesday, the President will have meetings with the Peoples Movement Party, Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, the national minorities group and the Social Democratic Party. Over 80% of the participants in the justice referendum, held concurrently with the EP elections, agreed that corruption offences must no longer be subject to amnesty and pardon, and that the Government must no longer pass emergency orders in the justice field.




    EU The PM of Romania Viorica Dăncilă had talks in Brussels on Tuesday with the European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker and first vice-president Frans Timmermans about the Romanian presidency of the Council of the EU, which comes to an end within a month. According to a news release issued by the Romanian Government, Juncker thanked the Romanian official for the excellent work of the Romanian presidency, which closed over 100 dossiers, including the ones on the European Border Police and Coast Guard, the European Labour Authority, the Copyright Directive and the EU Gas Directive. The two EU officials also appreciated the Romanian Governments commitment not to move on with the controversial reforms in the judiciary and to resume dialogue under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism. The outcome of the May 26 elections for the European Parliament was also discussed during the meeting.




    AGRICULTURE The Romanian Agriculture Minister, Petre Daea, chaired on Tuesday in Bucharest an informal meeting of the EU agriculture and fisheries ministers. Petre Daea told a press conference at the end of the meeting that research and bio-economy are key priorities in agriculture, because they enable EU farmers to meet the increasingly tough standards introduced by the Common Agricultural Policy, especially in terms of environment protection and climate. In turn, the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan says the new CAP will earmark more money for small and medium farms in the EU, and the endorsement of a bio-economy strategy will help create around 1 million jobs in the next 10-12 years in the EU. On Monday in Bucharest Phil Hogan had a meeting with PM Viorica Dăncilă, the agenda including a legislative package aimed to reform the CAP as of 2020. According to Hogan, the European Commission has earmarked 10 billion euros for bio-economy and the development of natural resources for 2021 – 2027.



    VISIT The US President Donald Trump, who is on a state visit to London, had talks with PM Theresa May on Tuesday. Trump promised that the UK may get a “phenomenal trade agreement with the US after Brexit, and praised Mays handling of the Brexit negotiations. On Monday the US President took part in a banquet at the Buckingham Palace, given by Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen emphasised the importance of the relations between the USA and Britain, and mentioned the cooperation during World War II, when British and American soldiers fought side by side to free Europe from the Nazis. The visit ends on Wednesday, with Donald Trump scheduled to attend a ceremony in Portsmouth to mark the D-Day landings, when on June 6, 1944, 160,000 British, American, French and other Allied troops landed in Nazi-occupied Normandy. Donald Trump will then fly to Ireland and France.




    WEATHER Meteorologists have extended an alert for unstable weather and heavy rainfalls valid across the country until Thursday night. Thunderstorms and strong wind are also expected, and precipitation amounts will reach up to 25 l per square metre, and up to 50 l per square metre in some parts of the country.

    KIEW: Rumäniens Präsident Traian Băsescu hat in Kiew an der Amtsantrittzeremonie seines neuen Amtskollegen in der benachbarten Ukraine, des pro-westlichen Petro Poroschenko teilgenommen. Poroschenko wurde am 25. Mai, im Rahmen vorgezogener Präsidentschaftswahlen gewählt. Diese wurden nach sechsmonatiger Krise veranstaltet, die mit Protestaktionen begonnen hatte und während der die Krim durch Russland annektiert wurde und separatistische Spannungen im Osten des Landes ausgebrochen waren. Poroschenko erklärte, dass die Stabilisierung der Lage in den mehrheitlich russischsprachigen Provinzen eine Priorität seiner Politik sei. Bei seiner Amtsantrittansprache sagte er, er werde jeglichen Kompromiss mit Russland bezüglich der europäischen Orientierung seines Landes und der Zugehörigkeit der Krim zu dem ukrainischen Staat ablehnen. Durch die Stimme des Präsidenten Băsescu und der Regierungsmitglieder hatte sich Bukarest stets für die Einhaltung der Souveranität und Integrität der Ukraine geäu‎ßert. Unterdessen schossen Separatisten ein Flugzeug der ukrainischen Luftwaffe in der Nähe der prorussischen Hochburg Slaviansk ab. Laut Kiew hatte das besagte Flugzeug humanitäre Hilfe für die Bevölkerung an Bord. In der Halbe-Million-Stadt Donetsk, übernahmen die Separatisten die Kontrolle über ein Krankenhaus.




    BUKAREST: Drei Mitglieder des Au‎ßenbeziehungsausschusses im US-Senat haben am Samstag einen Rumänienbesuch unternommen. Der ehemalige republikanische Präsidentschaftskandidat John McCain, sein Kollege Ron Johnson und der Demokrate Chris Murphy sind mit Präsident Traian Băsescu, mit Vertretern der Regierung und mit rumänischen Parlamentsabegeordneten zusammengekommen. McCain und Johnson zählen zu den einflussreichsten Mitgliedern des amerikanischen Kongresses und sind berühmt für ihre kritische Haltung gegenüber Moskau. Die beiden besuchten im April auch die mehrheitlich rumänischsprachige ex-Sowjetrepublik Moldau, um vor dem Hintergrund der Krise in der Ukraine, die Unterstützung der Vereinigten Staaten für die prowestliche Verwaltung in Chişinău auzudrücken. Der Rumänienbesuch der drei Kongressvertreter findet zwei Wochen statt, nachdem der amerikanische Vizepräsident Joe Biden in Bukarest zu Besuch war. Au‎ßerdem besuchte am Donnerstag US-Verteidungssekretär Chuck Hagel den rumänischen Schwarzmeerhafen Constanţa, wo er mit seinem Amtskollegen Mircea Duşa zusammenkam.




    PARIS: Vor historischer Weltkriegskulisse in der Normandie haben die Präsidenten der Ukraine und Russlands zu einer Waffenruhe aufgerufen und den Gedenkfeiern zum D-Day damit eine aktuelle Prägung gegeben. Petro Poroschenko und Wladimir Putin forderten am Freitag bei ihrem ersten Treffen ein “schnellstmögliches Ende des Blutvergie‎ßens im Südosten der Ukraine”. Putin sprach auch mit US-Präsident Barack Obama, wirkte aber bei der bewegenden Zeremonie politisch isoliert.

    BUKAREST: Die Nationale Antikorruptionsbehörde ermittelt gegen Leiter wichtiger Institutionen wegen Vorteilsannahme und Amtsmissbrauchs. Es handelt sich um den Vorsitzenden der nationalen Behörde im Energiebereich und einen der Direktoren von Enel, einem der wichtigsten Energieverteiler Rumäniens. Enel Distribuţie Muntenia, ein Energieunternehmen mit hunderttausenden Kunden, habe unberechtigte und viel zu hohe Rechnungen ausgestellt, nachdem es die Gebühr für grüne Zertifikate verdoppelt habe, so die Nationale Antikkoruptionsbehörde. Das zuständige Amt für Energieregelung hat den Betrug aufgedeckt und als Sanktion die Reduzierung der Tarife um 6% verhängt. Der Vizevorsitzende des Amtes für Energieregelung habe sich aber für die Reduzierung der Sanktionen eingesetzt und einen Vetrag mit einem Privatunternehmen vermittelt. Die Nationale Antikorruptionbehörde ermittelt auch gegen den zweitreichsten rumänischen Geschäftsmann Dan Adamescu. Adamescu wird vorgeworfen, Bestechungsgeld angeboten zu haben, damit für seine Unternehmen günstige Urteile gefällt werden.



    PARIS: Paris – Siebzig Jahre nach der Landung der Alliierten im Zweiten Weltkrieg sind am Freitag Staats-und Regierungschefs aus 19 Ländern zur offiziellen Feier in der Normandie zusammengekommen. Mit gro‎ßen Feierlichkeiten wurde der entscheidenden militärischen Operation gedacht, die den Sieg über Nazi-Deutschland brachte. Unter den Gästen ist die Elite der mächtigsten Politiker der Welt: US-Präsident, Barack Obama, der französische Staatspräsident, Francois Hollande, die deutsche Bundeskanzlerin, Angela Merkel, Königin Elisabeth II., von Gro‎ßbritannien, der russische Staatspräsident, Wladimir Putin. Die hohen Gäste gedachten in einer Serie von Veranstaltungen der Landung der alliierten Truppen am 6. Juni 1944. Mit dem D-Day vor 70 Jahren war die Niederlage Hitler-Deutschlands im Zweiten Weltkrieg entscheidend vorangetrieben worden. Der französische Staatspräsident Francois Hollande mahnte, die verlustreichen Kämpfe blieben eine Verpflichtung, sich auch heute für die Freiheit einzusetzen. Der D-Day habe «die Welt verändert». Auf einem US-Soldatenfriedhof in Colleville-sur-Mer gedachten Hollande und Obama der über 4400 alliierten Soldaten, die bei der Landung ums Leben kamen. An der zentralen Gedenkzeremonie in Ouistreham nahmen am Nachmittag über 7000 Gäste teil. Die Feierlichkeiten finden im Kontext der aktuellen Ukraine-Krise und der gespannten Beziehung zwischen Westen und Russland statt.



    SPORT: Die derzeit beste rumänische Tennisspielerin Simona Halep hat sich für das Endspiel des Roland Garros Turniers qualifiziert und wird somit ab Montag auf Platz 3 in der WTA Weltrangliste aufsteigen. Simona Halep gewann im Halbfinale mit 6:2 und 7:6 gegen die Deutsche Andrea Petkovic. Ihre Gegnerin im Finale am Samstag ist, wie bereits beim Turnier in Madrid, die Russin Maria Sharapowa. Sie hatte die junge Kanadierin Eugenie Bouchard mit 4:6, 7:5 und 6:2 besiegt. Bislang hatte Halep Sharapowa in drei Anläufen noch nie besiegen können. Simona Halep steigt zum ersten Mal in ihrer Karriere ins Finale eines Grand-Slam Turniers. Die letzte rumänische Tennisspielerin die den Einstieg ins Finale eines Grand-Slam Tuniers schaffte war Virginia Ruzici im Jahr 1980.
