    Präsident Klaus Iohannis nimmt an der Sitzung der UN-Generalversammlung in New York teil. Auf der Tagesordnung der 74. Sitzung stehen Themen wie die Intensivierung der multilateralen Bemühungen zur Beseitigung der Armut, eine qualitativ hochwertige Bildung, Klimaschutzmaßnahmen und Integration. Der rumänische Präsident wird eine Rede vor der UN-Generalversammlung halten und an dem hochrangigen politischen Forum teilnehmen, das sich auf die Beschleunigung der Umsetzung der Agenda für nachhaltige Entwicklung im Jahr 2030 konzentrieren wird. Die Agenda 2030 ist ein vor vier Jahren verabschiedetes globales Aktionsprogramm, das darauf abzielt, sich wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und umweltbezogenen Herausforderungen zu stellen. Die Beseitigung von Armut, vonHungersnot, die Gesundheit und der Wohlstand, sauberes Wasser, menschenwürdige Arbeit und Wirtschaftswachstum sind nur einige der Ziele, die die Staats- und Regierungschefs der Vereinten Nationen bis 2030 weltweit erreichen wollen. Am Rande der Sitzung der UN-Generalversammlung wird Präsident Iohannis auch eine Reihe von bilateralen Treffen abhalten und am Empfang von US-Präsident Donald Trump teilnehmen.




    Rumäniens Generalstaatsanwalt Bogdan Licu hat am Dienstag erklärt, dass die rumänischen Behörden keine offiziellen Daten haben, wonach der niederländische Staatsbürger, der angeblich ein 11-jähriges Mädchen aus des südrumänischen Landkreis Dambovita, getötet hat, in seinem Herkunftsland Selbstmord begangen hat. Selbst wenn sich das bestätigt, wird die Untersuchung weiterhin feststellen, ob es weitere Opfer gibt, da der 47-jährige Niederländer zuvor mindestens viermal nach Rumänien gereist war. Am Montag gaben Beamte der rumänischen Polizei bekannt, dass der Mann, der verdächtigt wird, das Mädchen ermordet zu haben, gestorben ist, nachdem er sein Auto in einen Lastwagen gefahren hatte.




    Die rumänische Premierministerin Viorica Dancila ist zu einem einwöchigen Arbeitsbesuch in den Vereinigten Staaten. Sie wird von Verteidigungsminister Gabriel Les und Finanzminister Eugen Teodorovici begleitet. Dancila trifft sich heute in New York mit dem US-Energieminister James Richard Perry. Ebenfalls in New York unterzeichnete die Premierministerin einen Kreditvertrag mit der Weltbank in Höhe von 500 Millionen Euro. Das Geld wird verwendet, um den Zugang der Bürger in weniger entwickelten Gebieten zur medizinischen Versorgung zu verbessern. Dancila traf sich auch mit David Harris, dem Präsidenten des American Jewish Committee, und bekräftigte das Engagement Rumäniens im Kampf gegen Antisemitismus, Fremdenfeindlichkeit und Intoleranz. Auf dem Programm des Besuchs stehen auch Treffen mit amerikanischen Geschäftsleuten, denen sie die Vorteile von Investitionen in Rumänien vorstellen wird. Die Premierministerin hat auch erklärt, dass sie plant, Vertreter der rumänischen Gemeinschaft in den Vereinigten Staaten zu treffen.




    Die Verhandlungsführer des EU-Rates treffen sich in Brüssel mit dem neuen Verhandlungsteam des Europäischen Parlaments, um über die Ernennung der Rumänin Laura Codruta Kovesi zur Europäischen Generalstaatsanwältin zu diskutieren. Die ehemalige Leiterin der rumänischen Nationalen Antikorruptionsdirektion, Laura Codruta Kovesi, hat die Unterstützung des Rates der Europäischen Union in ihrem Kampf um die Position der Europäischen Generalstaatsanwältin erhalten. Am Donnerstag gab der Ausschuss der Vertreter der Mitgliedstaaten der Europäischen Union Kovesi 17 der 22 Stimmen dafür. Die Europäische Staatsanwaltschaft (EPPO) wird im nächsten Jahr gegründet und nimmt ihre Tätigkeit 2021 auf. Nach europäischem Recht wird der Europäische Staatsanwalt vom Parlament und vom Rat gemeinsam für eine einmalige Amtszeit von sieben Jahren ernannt.




    Das rumänische Außenministerium und das Tourismusministerium haben zusammen mit Vertretern von Reisebüros nach dem unerwarteten Konkurs des Reiseveranstalters Thomas Cook, einem der weltweit größten Reiseanbieter, eine Krisenzelle eingerichtet. Dies betrifft auch rumänische Touristen, und die Behörden wollen Maßnahmen ergreifen, um sie wieder nach Hause zu bringen, sagte Minister Bogdan Trif bei Radio Rumänien. Thomas Cook, die britische Reiseagentur und Fluggesellschaft, meldete am frühen Montagmorgen den Konkurs an. Etwa 600.000 Reisende sind davon betroffen.




    Die künftige Europäische Kommission unter der Leitung von Ursula von der Leyen hat den Franzosen Eric Mamer zu ihrem Sprecher ernannt. Stellvertretende Sprecherin im Team für Medienarbeit wird die Rumänin Dana Spinant sein. Frau Spinant ist derzeit als Direktorin für Haushalt, Kommunikation und allgemeine Angelegenheiten in der Generaldirektion Regional- und Stadtpolitik der Kommission zuständig. Davor war sie Referentin für irreguläre Migration (2015-2017) und Drogenpolitik (2010-2014). Bevor sie zur Kommission kam, arbeitete Dana Spinant 15 Jahre lang im Journalismus.




    TENNIS – Die rumänische Tennisspielerin Simona Halep, Nr. 6 der Welt, hat sich nach dem Sieg gegen Barbora Strycova aus Tschechien mit 6:3, 6:2 für das 8. Finale des WTA-Turniers in Wohan, China, qualifiziert. Halep trifft als nächstes auf Elena Rîbakina aus Kasachstan.

    Conférence – Le président de la Roumanie, Klaus Iohannis, a déclaré samedi que le système international multilatéral subit une pression croissante. La réponse à cela est la cohésion et l’objectif principal devrait être un Engagement européen accru, a-t-il précisé. Et lui d’ajouter que ce message d’unité et de cohésion définit de manière fondamentale les priorités de la présidence roumaine du Conseil de l’UE. Présent en tant qu’invité d’honneur à la 55e Conférence internationale de sécurité de Munich, en Allemagne, le président Iohannis a par ailleurs affirmé que les efforts devraient viser surtout une démarche harmonisée de l’OTAN et de l’UE. Selon lui, ce but peut être atteint en combinant le rôle unique que l’OTAN joue en matière de défense collective avec l’approche intégratrice de l’UE dans la gestion des crises et sa capacité à rassembler les ressources et les moyens les plus divers. Les défis qui se posent devant l’Alliance sur son flanc oriental ne sauraient être ignorés et l’Alliance se doit de continuer à renforcer sa posture de défense et de dissuasion sur ce flanc, a souligné le chef de l’Etat roumain. A son tour, la chancelière allemande Angela Merkel a appelé samedi à des efforts de désarmement incluant Russes, Américains, Européens mais aussi Chinois, suite à la suspension du traité russo-américain sur les forces nucléaires intermédiaires. Elle a également mis en garde contre le fait que les structures politiques internationales étaient en train de s’effondrer et à appelé à une coopération globale renforcée sur des sujets variés, depuis la relation avec l’Iran jusqu’à la prévention d’une une nouvelle crise migratoire.



    Rencontres — Le président Klaus Iohannis a réaffirmé samedi, lors d’un entretien avec le vice-président américain Mike Pence, l’engagement de la Roumanie à renforcer le Partenariat stratégique avec les Etats-Unis et la relation transatlantique. Selon l’Administration présidentielle de Bucarest, les deux hauts responsables ont évoqué l’excellent stade de ce Partenariat et les possibilités de l’approfondir, un accent particulier étant mis sur les volets économie et défense. En marge de la Conférence internationale de sécurité de Munich, le chef de l’Etat roumain a également rencontré le leader du groupe PPE du Parlement européen, Manfred Weber, avec qui il s’est entretenu des principaux dossiers à l’agenda de la présidence roumaine du Conseil de l’UE et des futures élections européennes, prévues pour le mois de mai. Le chef de l’Etat roumain a également eu des rencontres bilatérales avec le négociateur en chef de l’UE, Michel Barnier, et avec le président du Comité juif américain, David Harris.



    Grippe — En Roumanie, le nombre des décès dus à la grippe est monté à 128. Selon le Centre national de surveillance et de contrôle des maladies transmissibles, la dernière victime est une jeune femme de 27 ans, qui souffrait d’autres maladies aussi et qui n’avait pas été vaccinée contre la grippe.



    Berlin — Le film « Monstres », premier long-métrage du réalisateur roumain Marius Olteanu, a remporté le prix des lecteurs du Tagesspiegel, lors de 69e Berlinale. Retenu dans la section « Forum » du festival, le film raconte une journée de la vie de deux jeunes Dana et Arthur, mariés, que la famille, les amis et la société semblent aimer, mais qu’ils jugent et qu’ils rejettent en même temps à cause de leurs convictions et de leurs choix de vie. Les deux finissent par se séparer au bout de 8 ans de vie de couple.



    Rugby — La sélection de rugby de Roumanie a vaincu samedi l’équipe allemande, sur le score de 38 à 10, lors du deuxième match de la nouvelle édition du Championnat dEurope, accueilli par la ville roumaine de Botosani (nord-est). Au premier match de la compétition, les Roumains s’étaient inclinés devant la Géorgie (score 19-8), tandis que l’Allemagne avait perdu face à la Belgique. Le Championnat dEurope de rugby est la deuxième grande compétition continentale après le célèbre tournoi des Six nations. Dans la hiérarchie internationale, la Roumanie occupe la 18e place, alors que l’Allemagne se trouve en 27e position.

    PROTEST – Dozens of thousands of people protested again in Bucharest and other cities across Romania on Saturday evening against the changes brought to the justice laws and the recent fiscal measures adopted by the government formed by the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats. The protest in Bucharest was attended by people from all over the country. The traffic in the area was disturbed and incidents were reported involving protesters and gendarmes. The protesters are accusing the ruling coalition in Romania of trying to subordinate the judiciary, by amending the legislation in the field. In December, several NGOs called on the Government to inform the Venice Commission about the justice laws and the changes in the criminal codes. Recently, the embassies in Bucharest of Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Holland and Sweden have called, in a joint letter, on all the parties involved in the reform of the judiciary to avoid any action that would weaken the independence of the justice system and the fight against corruption.



    AJC– Romanias President Klaus Iohannis has received in Bucharest a delegation of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), headed by President David Harris, on which occasion he stated that Bucharest authorities will continue to be extremely open to the Jewish community. In turn, David Harris has appreciated the way in which Romania acted while holding the presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, between March 2016 and March 2017, stressing in particular the remarkable results obtained in the field of Holocaust education and research. During the meeting, the two parties also discussed the Strategic Partnership between Romania and the US and the privileged ties between Romania and Israel, to the strengthening of which AJC would like to keep contributing. David Harris has also met with the Romanian interim prime-minister Mihai Fifor, who has stressed Romanias strategic role in the Black Sea area and the countrys firm commitment as a NATO member. Established in 1906, the American Jewish Committee is one of the oldest Jewish organisations in the USA, fighting against antisemitism at global level and promoting the observance of human rights.



    AIR POLLUTION– The European Commission has announced that on January 30th it will hold a ministerial meeting, involving the participation of nine member states, including Romania. The meeting will focus on the infringement procedure regarding failure to observe the agreed air pollution limits. The other member states, besides Romania, facing infringement are the Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia and the UK. In 2008, a directive was issued establishing the air quality limits that cannot be exceeded anywhere in the EU, obliging the Member States to limit the exposure of citizens to harmful air pollutants. According to the Commission, despite this directive, these limits are still being exceeded in more than 130 cities across Europe.



    BULGARIA – The German Chancellor Angela Merkel paid a visit to Sofia on Saturday, for talks with her Bulgarian counterpart Boiko Borisov on the priorities of the Bulgarian presidency of the EU. The talks focused on Bulgarias joining the Schengen agreement, the EU accession of the countries in the Western Balkans, the migration crisis and the relations with Turkey. Merkel hailed the way in which Bulgaria ensured the security of the EU borders, in particular the one with Turkey. She also appreciated the Bulgarian Prime Ministers initiative to organize an EU-Turkey summit, which would openly address all the important issues. The German chancellor has announced that Bulgarias accession to the Schengen area might start soon with air transportation.



    FARMING – Romania owns 33% of the total number of farms in the EU, but, as regards the area of land used in agriculture, the country is outranked by countries such as France or Spain, according to data made public by the National Statistics Institute. According to the institute, Romanias main problem is the fragmentation of agricultural land, which does not help farmers capitalize enough on their production. The study made by the NSI has also revealed that, in 2016, the number of farms dropped by 6% as compared to 2013, when the previous study was conducted.



    ATTACK – On Saturday, the Turkish army confirmed it launched a ground and air offensive against the YPG Kurdish militia in the Afrin region in northern Syria. To Ankara, YPG, Peoples Protection Units, is a terrorist organisation. The operation is regarded with concern by Washington, given that YPG is an ally to the US in the fight against the Islamic State. Ankara accuses YPG of being the Syrian branch of the PKK, which has been carrying out a rebellion in south-eastern Turkey for more than 30 years and is considered by Ankara and its western allies a terrorist organisation.



    AUSTRALIAN OPEN– The Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, number one in the WTA rankings, has today qualified for the next round of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, after defeating the American Lauren Davis. The match against Davis was the most dramatic in her career and also the longest, as it lasted three hours and 45 minutes. In the fourth round, Simona Halep will take on the Japanese Naomi Osaka, no. 72 in the WTA classification. Also today, the pair made up of the Romanian Sorana Carstea and the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia has qualified for the last 16 of the womens doubles. Next they will play against the fourth seed Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova, of the Czech Republic. In the mens doubles, the Romanian Horia Tecau and the Dutch Jean-Julien Rojer were defeated by the Australian Sam Groth/ Lleyton Hewitt. Another Romanian player, Ana Bogdan, was eliminated in the third round by the American Madison Keys.
