    Sports weekend

Romanian League One’s final configuration for the
upcoming season has been decided on Thursday. In the promotion/maintaining playoff
tie, FC Voluntari outclassed Dunarea Calarasi. We recall that in the second leg
of the tie FC Voluntari trounced Dunarea on home turf, 4-nil. Scoring for
Voluntari were the Czech Lukas Droppa, the Spaniard Jefte Betancor, Igor Armaş and
Cosmin Achim, who turned a penalty kick into a goal. In the first leg in
Calarasi, Voluntari also emerged as winners, 2-1. In the previous season,
Dunarea came in 4th in according to the Second league’s Group1 rankings. FC
Voluntari came in 7th according to League One’s Group 2
classification. On Wednesday and also in a League One playoff fixture, CS
Mioveni secured an aggregate win against FC Hermanstadt, with a 2-1 away win in
Medias and a blank draw at home. In the previous season, CS Mioveni came in 3rd
according to League Two’s Group1 rankings. Mioveni are the first second-tier
team to have won a promotion/maintaining playoff tie in League One. We recall
that so far, only League One teams have had the upper hand in such confrontations. At the end of the season, FC
Hermannstadt have been relegated to League Two. Politehnica Iasi and Astra
Giurgiu, two bottom-of-the table teams in League One, have also been relegated
to League Two. The Second League’s first two teams in descending order, FCU
Craiova and Rapid Bucharest, have been promoted to League One.

The headline-hitting event at the weekend is the
friendly match pitting the national squad of Romania against England. The venue
of the game will be a stadium in Middlesbrough in England. The Brits are still
preparing for the European Football championship, which is drawing near. We
recall that our national squad failed to qualify to the event. Ahead of the
friendly against England, the Romanians are trailing a recent unnerving, 1-2
defeat by Georgia behind them. Georgia is 91st-placed according to the world
rankings. Sports media at home has heavily criticized the national squad’s
below-par run in the match against Georgia. Head-coach Mirel Radoi also came under
fire for the faulty way in which he prepared the team and composed the starting
lineup. A satisfactory result in England could ease the tension that has occurred
among the team and among board members of the Romanian Football Federation, where
president Razvan Burleanu as of late has been highly contested because of the
National squad’s disappointing results in recent confrontations.

Romania, a good run at the European Gymnastics Championship

Once a great power in European and world competitions, Romanian gymnastics has seen a decline in recent years. This is why the joy brought by Romanian athletes to gymnastics fans late last week can be translated into the hope that Romanian gymnasts will return to top places in international competitions, as it had been the case ever since 1976, when Nadia Comăneci got the first 10 in the history of this sport, at the Montreal Olympics.

This past weekend for the first time in 6 years, the national womens gymnastics team went to the podium at the 33rd edition of the European Championship.

On Saturday in Mersin, Turkey, the team made up of Larisa Iordache, Daniela Trică, Antonia Duţă, Silviana Sfiringu and Ioana Stănciulescu won the silver. First came Ukraine, and third–Hungary.

The competition continued on Sunday with the apparatus finals for both juniors and seniors, and medals continued to come. The leader of the senior team, Larisa Iordache (24) won the gold in the beam and floor finals and the silver in vault. Her performance is particularly outstanding as it comes after a 3-year break, during which the athlete underwent surgery. In an Instagram post at the end of the competition in Turkey, the several-times European and world champion Larisa Iordache said “it is never too late to follow your dream… all you need is an impulse for the strength within you to surface. And we should not forget the beam final, where Silviana Sfiringu won the silver as well.

Adding to the seniors performance are the medals won by the juniors: 6 gold medals in all the events (team, all-around and apparatus), 2 silver medals for Maria Ceplinschi in the all-around and floor final, and one bronze for Andreea Preda on beam.

But the rising star at the Mersin championship was junior Ana Bărbosu, who won 6 gold medals—with the team, in the all-around and all the apparatus finals, a record for Romanias participation in the European Gymnastics Championships.

However, we should keep in mind that because of the COVID-19 pandemic, athletes from only 14 countries attended this 33rd edition, with European gymnastics powerhouses like Russia, France, Britain, Italy and the Netherlands skipping this years championship. (tr. A.M. Popescu)

Romanias womens handball team sees its participation in the European Championship hosted by Denmark at the end. The Romanians came out 12th out of 16 teams, which is the weakest performance for the team in a European championship, with 0 points in the main group stage.

Romania started out in Group D, with a defeat from Germany 19 – 22. The subsequent win against Poland, 28 – 24, was the only one in this European championship edition, but it was enough to take Romania into the main groups. The last match in Group D ended with a clear defeat, 20 – 28 against Norway.

In the Main Group II, Romania played 3 matches only to lose all of them: 20 – 25 against Croatia, 24 – 26 against Hungary and 24 – 35 against the Netherlands. In the last match, with nothing left to fight for, the managers of the Romanian team decided to spare their top player Cristina Neagu the effort, so the disastrous score came as no surprise.

The next matches in the competition are scheduled for Friday. In the match for 5th place, Russia is taking on the Netherlands. The semi-finals will be pitting France against Croatia and Norway against Denmark. The final will be played on Sunday.

In mens handball, this Sunday CSM Bucharest are playing at home against the Turkish side Spor Toto, in the return match of the EHF European Cups 3rd round. In the first leg in Turkey, CSM won 33 to 27, which gives the Romanian side better chances to move up into the 8th-finals of the competition, in which another Romanian team, Minaur Baia Mare, is already qualified. Neagu was already the top scorer in the history of the European Championship in the 2018 edition, when she broke Hungarian Agnes Farkass record of 205 goals scored between 1994 and 2002.

Named the worlds best player by the International Handball Federation in 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2018, Neagu is not in best shape at EURO 2020, after having tested positive for COVID-19 last month.

She still has the fastest throw in the tournament, at 129 km/h. She also has the second-best number of assists, 615, after her teammate Cristina Laslo, with 624. And she is Romanias top scorer in Denmark, with 16 goals in 46 throws, accounting for a 35% rate. (translated by: Ana-Maria Popescu)

COVID-19 According to the Strategic Communication Group, 2,844 new coronavirus infections were reported in the past 24 hours in Romania, with the total number of cases exceeding 212,000 in 8 months. Another 79 COVID-19 patients died, taking the death toll to 6,470. 823 patients are currently in intensive care. Bucharest reports the highest number of daily new cases, 520. Meanwhile, the National Committee for Emergencies Monday updated the list of COVID-19 high-risk countries. As of October 26, travelers coming into Romania from these countries must isolate for 14 days. The list comprises 30 countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, France, the UK, Ireland, Portugal. The US and the R. of Moldova are no longer on the list. Also today, the Committee passed a resolution clarifying that face masks can be taken off outdoors, for brief periods of time, when smoking, eating or drinking, or exercising. As of today, all schools, high schools and kindergartens in the cities of Timişoara, Sibiu and Baia Mare have switched to online classes, as the threshold of 3 COVID-19 infections per thousand inhabitants has been exceeded. Most major cities in Romania operate in the same scenario, including the capital Bucharest. In addition, face masks are compulsory in all indoor or outdoor public areas, and indoor restaurants, cafes, cinema and theatre halls are closed.

VISIT The PM of Romania Ludovic Orban is on an official visit to France on Monday and Tuesday. According to the Romanian Government, Ludovic Orban will have meetings with his French counterpart Jean Castex, with the speakers of the National Assembly, Richard Ferrand, and the Senate, Gerard Larcher, and with the leader of the centre-right party ‘Les Republicains’, Christian Jacob. The Romanian PM will also take part in a meeting of the Council of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, and will have official talks with the OECD secretary general Angel Gurria. The visit also includes a meeting with members of the Romanian community in France.

ELECTIONS The date of the forthcoming parliamentary election in Romania is discussed in Parliament as of today. A bill in this respect, enabling Parliament to set the election date instead of the Government, has been returned to Parliament by president Klaus Iohannis. Most likely the election date will be December 6, as already accepted by president Iohannis and the Liberal Government. The left-of-centre opposition however favours a postponement of the parliamentary election to March 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CORRUPTION The Chamber of Deputies is discussing and voting on Tuesday on a request filed by the National Anti-Corruption Directorate to commence prosecution against Deputy Nicolae Bănicioiu, who is accused of influence peddling and continuing bribe-taking. He denied all accusations and asked the Chamber to vote on the request, which has been already approved by the Judicial Committee. A former health minister, Nicolae Bănicioiu (Social Democratic Party) is probed into in a case involving the sale of medical products to public hospitals in Bucharest and Ilfov County. Prosecutors say Bănicioiu received 2.6 million euros from 2 businessmen in exchange for appointing or keeping in office hospital managers that had signed contracts with the respective companies.

JUSTICE The Romanian Justice Minister Cătălin Predoiu said on Sunday, the European Day of Justice, that results cannot be secured without constant investments in the judicial system. He added that in the ensuing years, alongside curbing corruption, which is yet to be solved, Romania will focus on fighting organised crime and human trafficking, including child trafficking, by means of thorough investigations and tough penalties in all the cases with enough evidence. Organised crime and human trafficking are incompatible with Romanias EU and NATO membership, minister Predoiu argued. (translated by: Ana-Maria Popescu)

  • New Commission to seek European Parliament endorsement

New Commission to seek European Parliament endorsement

The vote on the new European Commission is scheduled for next Wednesday, during the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The announcement was made by the Parliament president David Sassoli, who said the Conference of Presidents authorised the publication of the evaluation letters of Commissioners-designate. These are reports made by the specialist committees following the hearing of each candidate, held between September 30 and October 8 for 23 nominees. The last round of committee hearings was held on November 14, when the new candidates sent by Romania, Hungary and France were evaluated, after the initial nominations made by these countries were rejected in the parliamentary validation procedure.

Meanwhile, last week the European Commission initiated an infringement procedure against Britain, which declined nominating a commissioner-designate.

According to the president of the European Parliament, over the past 2 months the body has carefully reviewed the performances of the commissioners-designate, and the Conference of Presidents, made up of the political group leaders and the EP president, conducted the final evaluation after exchanging opinions with the Commissions 3 executive vice-presidents—Frans Timmermans, Margrethe Vestager and Valdis Dombrovkis.

“The hearings have been detailed, and sometimes difficult, but they provide a unique and transparent way for MEPs to verify whether the Commissioners-designate are ready for the job ahead, Sassoli said, and on Thursday Parliament officially closed the evaluation process. The vote on the College of Commissioners will take place next week, and if its a favourable vote the Commission will be able to start its work on December 1. “As the direct link with EU citizens, the Parliament will continue to hold the Commission to account and ensure it delivers on its promises, the EP president added.

The vote in the Parliament plenary session will be held after Ursula von der Leyen has presented the new members and their programme. In the next 5 years, Europe will be facing many challenges, Sassoli also mentioned, from long-term solutions to the migration and asylum to taking over global leadership in the fight against climate change. We need a European Commission ready to tackle the problems that matter to Europeans, David Sassoli also said.

    No-confidence motion against the Cabinet

The Cabinet headed by Viorica Dancila is facing a new motion of no-confidence, the first since the ruling coalition of the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats fell apart in August. The text of the motion against the Social Democrats minority government was read in Parliament on Thursday. The document, entitled “In order to rebuild Romania, the Dancila Cabinet must be dismissed immediately! will be discussed next Thursday, on October 10. The motion signatories argue that although the country has seen a favourable economic period, with significant economic growth, the Government has failed to start even one major infrastructure project. Confidence in the Romanian economy is dwindling, first of all because the business legislation changes almost on a weekly basis, the Opposition also says. The Social Democratic PM Viorica Dancila says on the other hand that the Government will not fall. The motion was signed by 237 MPs, from across the political spectrum, 4 more than the number of votes required for the document to pass.

Romanias new nominations for European Commissioner

The Romanian Government had to come up this week with new nominations for European Commissioner for Transport, after the European Parliaments legal affairs committee rejected Rovana Plumb on grounds of a conflict of interests. Convening in Bucharest on Tuesday night, the National Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party decided that MEP Dan Nica, a former telecoms minister, was the Governments new nomination for the post. They also chose Gabriela Ciot, a state secretary with the Foreign Ministry, as a back-up candidate, in case the European Commission wanted a woman for this position. Disgruntled with both Rovana Plumbs candidacy, and with the 2 subsequent alternatives, the Opposition called on PM Viorica Dancila to no longer make any nominations without consultations with the President and without a vote in Parliaments specialised committees. The president of the National Liberal Party, Ludovic Orban, warned that otherwise more candidates will be rejected, damaging Romanias international reputation.

McDowell added that the EIB Group provides not only financial resources, but also consulting services for preparing and implementing complex projects. He signed new contracts and changes in the existing agreements with the Romanian banking institutions interested in facilitating the access of Romanian companies to funding. According to the Romanian Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici, over 2,000 Romanian SMEs have benefited from such funding so far.

    Anti-mafia chief prosecutor resigns

The President of Romania Klaus Iohannis Wednesday signed a decree dismissing Felix Banila as chief prosecutor of the Directorate Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism. The latter had previously announced he would step down, although he claimed that he had not failed to do his duty. On Monday the President called for Banilas resignation, criticising him for the way in which the institution handled the investigations in the Caracal killings, a case with a heavy emotional impact on the public. Prosecutors are trying to determine whether 2 under-aged girls were killed by a presumed people trafficker, Gheorghe Dinca. The President argued that in both cases he saw delayed and outrageous responses from certain authorities, proving their disregard for both the victims and their families.
