As part of the European Weightlifting Championships hosted by Armenias Yerevan, on Wednesday Loredana Toma won all three gold medals of the 71-kilogram category. Loredanas deadlift in the snatch style was 110 kilograms, while in the clean-and-jerk style the Romanian succeeded a deadlift of 130 kilograms. Loredana Tomas combined achievement in the competition stood at 240 kilograms. At the recently-held edition of the European Championships, Romania walked away with 14 medals all told. Apart from Loredana Toma, Mihaela Cambei in the 49-kilogram category and Andreea Cotruţa, in the 55- kilogram category won three gold medals each, Also in the womens version of the competition, Cosmina Pană in the 45-kilogram category won gold in the snatch style and combined. In the mens version of the championships, competing in the 55-kilogram category, Valentin Iancu walked away with silver in the clean-and-jerk style. Iancu won bronze in the snatch style, and combined.



    In news from womens tennis, the Romanian-Japanese pair made of Monica Niculescu and Makoto Ninomiya was unable to go past the womens doubles first round as part of the WTA 500 tournament in Stuttgart, an event with almost 700 thousand USD in prize money all told. On Wednesday, Niculescu and Ninomiya sustained a 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 defeat by the pair made of Alexa Guarachi of Chile and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand The vanquished pair was handed a cheque worth 3, 780 euro and were granted one point in the WTA rankings.     Volei Alba Blaj Alba Blaj, on Tuesday grabbed their first win in the Champions
    League’s Group B. In Kutna Hora, the Czech Republic, Alba Blaj defeated Ukraine’s
    Prometey Dnipro, 3-nil. At the top of the table in the group are Vero Volley Milan,
    winners of the two group fixtures they have played so far. Alba Blaj are
    the runner-up team and their next scheduled match is this coming Wednesday’s
    confrontation against Vero Volley Milan.


    A first-timer in the Champions League, CSM
    Târgovişte have succeeded their first group win as part of the the competition.
    In a Group E fixture on Wednesday, CSM Targoviste grabbed a 3-nil away win against
    Bulgarian opponents Maritza Plovdiv. With three wins so far, Turkey’s Eczacibaşi

    style Cotruta managed a deadlift of 87 kilograms and was 4th-placed.
    In the clean-and-jerk style, Andreea Cotruta came in 6th, with 107 kilograms.
    So far, Romania has won only one medal, as this past Tuesday, in the
    49-kilogram category, Mihaela-Valentina Cambei won
    silver in the snatch style. The World Weightlifting Championships are the only official
    competition that matters for the qualification to the 2024 edition of the Olympic
    Games in Paris.

    Municipal play a home game against Swedish team Höör,
    whom they trounced last week away from home 31-24. Also on Sunday, Gloria Buzău
    play a home fixture against Hungarian opponents Mosonmagyaróvár. Gloria need to come from behind and win, in the
    wake of a 26-29 defeat in Hungary. The third preliminary round’s winning teams
    will play in the European League’s group stage early in 2023. next year.

    n the Romanian Superleague in football, on
    Friday, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe take on FC Voluntari. On Saturday, FC Hermannstadt

The Cups ensuing playoff stage will also include eight of the Superleagues poorer-ranked teams. The competitions next group stage will also include the other eight stronger teams of the upper echelon. There are 24 teams all told, distributed according to six groups made of six teams each. So, there is no such thing as the round-robin system. The teams play only three fixtures, according to a value ranking system. The first two teams in descending order advance to the quarterfinals. Then the semi-final and the final follow.



    Fixtures counting towards the Romanian Cup in footballs group stage have been played since this past Tuesday. In Group A, the match pitting Dinamo Bucharest against FC U Craiova ended in a blank draw. In Group C, Alexandria and Farul Constanta drew, 2-all. Also in Group C, Rapid Bucharest grabbed a 4-1 win against second-tier team, Dumbravita.     CSM Bucharest and Rapid Bucharest, the two Romanian
    women’s handball teams competing in the Champions League’s group stage have had
    a win-all record so far, after three rounds. In a Group B away fixture this past
    Sunday, Romanian title holders Rapid had no problem defeating Turkish opponents
    Kastamonu. Spanish head-coach Carlos Viver’s trainees had a lackluster start,
    and Kastamonu even had 8-4 lead during the game. Yet Rapid braced up and
    secured a 15-12 advantage at half time. In the second half, Kastamonu were quick
    to lose stamina and eventually, Rapid were seven goals up from their opponents.
    Rapid’s top scorer was Eliza Buceschi, with seven goals scored. With 5 points each,
    French team Metz and Rapid are the leaders in Group B.


    In the Champions League’s Group A, CSM Bucharest
    had a hard time avoiding a defeat in the home game they played against Germany’s
    Bietigheim, succeeding a 28-all final score this past Sunday in Bucharest. With a win-all
    record for quite some time, Bietigheim had the upper hand during the first half
    of the game, securing a 16-13 advantage at half time. However, CSM succeeded to
    level the score in the second half, yet they wasted several other opportunities
    to score and secure a win. Towards the end of the match, Bietigheim again
    secured their advantage on the pitch; however, CSM’s Norwegian player Malin Aune
    levelled the score five second before the end of the game, when the Germans wasted
    the opportunity to maintain their advantage, several times. In Group A, Bietigheim and CSM are
    2nd and 3rd-placed, respectively, with 5 points each. Norway’s
    Vipers Kristiansand are the leaders in group A, with 6 points in six games.


    In the ice hockey Erste Liga, this past
    Sunday, ACSH Gheorgheni succeeded
    their third consecutive win, 4-2, against Dunaujvarosi Acelbikak. Corona Braşov

    Fatic has won the Sibiu Open challenger tournament, an event with 45, 730 Euros
    in prize money. In the final, Fatic defeated another Bosnian, 6th-sseeded
    Damir Dzumhur, 6-3, 6-4. 258thplaced according to the ATP rankings, Fatic, defeated
    his much more experienced opponent, currently 192nd-placed according
    ot the ATP rankings, after one hour and 34 minutes of play. We recall Dzumhur

    podium there is the defending Olympic and European Champion women’s pair made
    of Ancuța Bodnar and Simona Radiș. Also worth watching is the progress of the
    women’s coxed eight crew, a European title holder as well.


    In news from women’s handball, Romania’s champion team,
    Rapid Bucharest, on Wednesday secured a comfortable 34-25 away win against Magura
    Cisnadie, in a fixture counting towards the National League’s 5th
    round. In another regular match, Baia Mare defeated Dunărea Brăila, 27-25. Quite
    surprisingly, Gloria Buzău are at the top of the table, with 12 points in four
    games. CSM Bucharest is the runner-up team, with 10 points in four games.


    Former FCSB head-coach, Anton Petrea, on Wednesday was
    appointed at the helm of a Chindia Târgovişte. The latter team’s former
    head-coach, Adrian Mihalcea, had a mutual consent contract termination with
    Chindia’ s management this past Tuesday. After 11 rounds in the Super League, Chindia
    Târgovişte is at the bottom of the table in the rankings, with a mere 3 points and
    a no-win record.


    Romania’s national football team is in Helsinki for a Nations
    League fixture against Finland on Friday. In League B’s third group, Romanian’s
    national team is 4th-placed according to the as-it-stands table, with
    only 3 points on its record sheet. Finland is 3rd-placed, with 4
    points, Bosnia and Herzegovina are at the top of the table, with 8 points,
    followed by Montenegro, with 7. In Bosnia’s Zelnica this coming Friday, Bosnia
    and Herzegovina go against Montenegro. In Bucharest on Monday, Romania takes on
