    The Athlete of the Week

    Romania has a longstanding tradition in rowing, having won no fewer than 10 gold medals in the history of the Olympic Games. Eight of these were won by Romania’s canoeists, including the likes of Leon Rotman and Ivan Patzaichin, who made history in world competitions. The latest of the golden generation of canoeists is Florin Popescu; he and Mitica Pricop walked away with gold from the mens C2 1000 meter race of the Olympic Games in Sydney in the year 2000, after an absence of 16 years. As a coincidence, the previous title had been obtained in the same race in Los Angeles 1984 by Ivan Patzaichin and Toma Simionov.



    Florin Popescu was born on August 30th 1974 in Olt County, southern Romania. Together with Mitica Pricop he clinched gold in the 500 meter race and bronze in the 1000 meter event at the European Championships in Zagreb in 1999. After the victory in Sydney, the two athletes won the gold medal in the 1000 and 500 meter races of the European Championships in Milan in 2001.



    A year later, Pricop was replaced by Silviu Simiocencu, and the Romanian boat compelled international recognition in the competitions of 2002 and 2003, when they even won the world title in the 1000 meter race. Unfortunately, in Athens 2004, the Romanian boat went only fourth, in the races of 500 and 1000 meters.



    After Athens, Popescu took a break from competitions, but a year later he joined Romanias four, which became the gold medalists at the European Championships in Poznan in the 1000 meter race. And that was the last great performance in the career of Florin Popescu who is now coaching Romanias Olympic canoe team. (bill)

    de caiac – canoe este una dintre cele mai puternice din lume. Ea a obţinut,
    de-a lungul istoriei, zece victorii olimpice. Dintre acestea, opt li se datorează
    canoiştilor. Pe parcursul anilor, nume precum Leon Rotman sau Ivan Patzaichin
    au intrat definitiv în istoria universală a sportului.

    Ultimul mare
    campion al canoei româneşti este Florin Popescu. El a reuşit, în 2000, la
    Sydney, alături de Mitică Pricop, la canoe dublu (1000 de metri) să obţină
    o medalie olimpică de aur, după o pauză de 16 ani. Ca o coincidenţă,
    ultimul titlu olimpic la canoe fusese obţinut tot la dublu şi tot pe distanta
    de 1000 de metri, la Los Angeles, în 1984, de perechea Ivan Patzaichin – Toma
    Simionov.


    Florin Popescu
    s-a născut la 30 august 1974, în localitatea Iancu Jianu, din judeţul Olt. S-a remarcat, alături de Mitică Pricop, încă din 1999, de la Europenele
    de la Zagreb, unde a câştigat aurul la 500 şi bronzul la 1000 de metri. După Sydney,
    cei doi au câştigat, în 2001, la Europenele de la Milano, medalii de aur atât
    la 1000 cât şi la 500 de metri.


    Din 2002, locul lui Pricop în ambarcaţiunea de la dublu a
    fost luat de Silviu Simiocencu. Impreună, Popescu şi Simiocencu s-au aflat în
    topurile mondiale atât în 2002, cât şi
    în 2003, an în care, pe 1000 de metri, au câştigat chiar titlul mondial.
    Din păcate însă, la Atena, în 2004,
    Popescu şi Simiocencu au ratat medaliile la limită. Atât la 500 de metri, cât
    şi la 1000, ei s-au clasat pe locul 4.


    După Atena, Popescu s-a retras din activitatea
    competiţională. A revenit, pentru scurtă vreme, în 2005, în echipajul de canoe
    4 al României, care a câştigat aurul la Europenele de la Poznan, pe distanţa de
    1000 de metri. A fost ultima mare performanţă a lui Florin Popescu. Astăzi, el
    este antrenorul coordonator al lotului olimpic de canoe al României.

    Bukarest: Elf Landkreise im Süden und Süd-Westen des Landes stehen bis Donnerstagabend unter Alarmstufe Gelb wegen massiver Regenfälle. In den angegebenen Gegenden werden die Wassermengen 25-30 Liter / qm überschreiten und vereinzelt sogar 50 Liter / qm erreichen. Es weht starker Wind mit Geschwindigkeiten die 50-60km/h überschreiten werden. In den restlichen Teilen des Landes ist der Himmel wechselhaft, mit zeitweiligen Bewölkungen und vereinzelten Regenfällen, insbesondere in den Hügel- und Bergregionen. Der flutartige Regen der letzten Tage verursachte in einigen Landkreisen beträchtliche Schäden.     Bukarest: Die Nationale Antikorruptionsbehörde (DNA) hat am Mittwoch offiziell bestätigt, sie habe von der Abgeordnetenkammer gefordert, ihre Zustimmung zur Untersuchungshaft eines Abgeordneten zu geben, der des Amtsmissbrauchs beschuldigt wird, um Geld und verschiedene Güter erzielt zu haben. 2012 habe Florin Popescu als Präsident der Vertretung seiner Partei im südrumänischen Dâmboviţa dem Manager eines Lebensmittelunternehmens rund 70 Tonnen Grillhähnchen im Wert von knapp 100.000 Euro verlangt, damit diese in der Wahlkampagne an potentielle Wähler verteilt werden, erklären die Staatsanwälte. Am Mittwoch kündigte zudem die Antikorruptionsbehörde an, sie habe angefangen, gegen einen ehemaligen Landwirtschaftsminister, Stelian Fuia zu ermitteln. Fuia steht unter dem Verdacht, er habe im Zeitraum 2005-2008, als er das Amt des Direktors eines Forschungszentrums bekleidete, verschiedene Grundstücke illegal veräu‎ßert, deren Wert auf knapp 370. 000 Euro geschätzt wird. Fuia hat das Amt des Landwirtschaftsministers drei Monate lang, im Jahr 2012 bekleidet.






    Bukarest: Die rumänischen Eisenbahner haben am Mittwoch die Arbeit stillgelegt. Dies passierte vor dem Hintergrund der Scheiterung der Verhandlungen hinsichlich der Unterzeichnung eines neuen Tarifvertrages. Rund 300 Personenzüge wurden an den Haltestellen für zwei Stunden angehalten, was Tausende Reisende beeiträchtigte. Die Unzufriedenheit der Gewerkschaftler wurde durch den niedrigen Stand der Löhne und die Streichung des Rechtes der Mitarbeiter, kostenlos mit der Bahn zu fahren, sowie durch die mögliche Massenentlassung von 2.500 Angestellten der Gütereisebahngesellschaft verursacht.     Bukarest: Das 9. internationale Theaterfestival Shakespeare“ hat am Mittwoch im südrumänischen Craiova begonnen. Dieses Jahr werden 450 Jahre seit der Geburt des gro‎ßen englischen Dramaturgen gefeiert. Die Serie der Auftritte wurde von dem Globe Theater aus London, mit dem Schauspiel, Viel Lärm um nichts“, in der Regie von Max Webster, gestartet. 12 Tage lang kommen in Craiova Theater von vier Kontinenten, darunter Globe (England) und Vahtangov (Russland), sowie Theater, Theaterschulen und Philharmoniken aus China, Südafrika, Rumänien, Litauen, Armenien, Ungarn, der Ukraine, unter dem Titel Unser aller Shakespeare“ für 30 Referenzauftritte zusammen.





    Bukarest: Die amerikanische Fregatte USS Taylor ist am Dienstag ins Schwarze Meer eingetreten, um im Kontext der ukrainischen Krise den Frieden und die Stabilität in der Region zu fördern“, hei‎ßt es auf der Webseite der US-Militärmarine. Das Schiff wird sich dem Zerstörer USS Donald Cook anschlie‎ßen, der sich bereits in der Gegend befindet, um an gemeinsamen Manövern mit den Seestreitkräften aus Rumänien, Bulgarien und der Türkei teilzunehmen. Unterdessen kündigte Washington die Entsendung von 600 Militärs nach Polen und in die baltischen Länder für die Beteiligung an gemeinsamen Militärübungen.
