Romanian Cup in football’s group phase kick-started on Tuesday. As part of the 2024-2025 edition, Romania’s best teams will thus prove their mettle in the Cup’s group phase. These teams in the previous season competed in the Superleague’s Group 2.

On Tuesday, Petrolul Ploieşti grabbed a 3-nil away win against third-tier team Agricola Borcea, in Group B’s debut match. In Group C in Iasi, the local side Poli drew against UTA Arad, 1-all. Second-tier team FC Arges in Mioveni drew against CFR Cluj, also 1-all. The other matches of the first round as part of the group phase will be played on Wednesday and Thursday.

Romanian Cup’s groups system has been implemented fairly recently, starting with the Cup’s 2022 edition. Until then, it was a direct eliminatory competition in all its phases. At the moment, the competition begins with the county phase, where taking the start can be all clubs and sports associations registered with the Romanian Federation and all football associations, irrespective of the echelons they are part of.

The regional phase follows, with 42 teams that emerged as winners at county level and with 7 teams being eliminated. They advance to the first round, alongside the 69 teams that in the previous year competed in the 3rd League. Along the way, the group phase included, entering the competition will also be teams of the upper leagues.

Romanian Cup in football has been taking place since 1933. The first team to have won the cup was Ripensia Timisoara. We recall that in the 1933-1934 season final, Ripensia defeated Universitatea Cluj. The match was hosted by Bucharest’s ONEF stadium, an arena that after 1948 was known as the Republic Stadium. It was later dismantled to make room for the People’s House, today’s Parliament Palace.

Most editions of Romania’s Cups have been won by FCSB, former Steaua. FCSB have no less than 24 trophies on the record. FCSB also played 8 finals, where they were defeated. Two other Bucharest teams, Dinamo and Rapid, have each won the Cup 13 times.

the capital Bucharest, but no emergency calls were received and no damages or
victims were reported. This was the strongest earthquake in the last 2 and a
half years. A 5.2 quake occurred on January 31, 2020 in Vrancea, Romania’s main
seismic area. A bigger, 5.8 magnitude tremor was also reported in October 2018,
    in Buzău County.

an official visit to Romania today, the Romanian Defence Ministry announced. Lecornuwill have meetings with the Romanian Defence Minister, Angel Tîlvăr, with
President Klaus Iohannis and PM Nicolae Ciucă. The French delegation’s agenda
also includes a visit to the ‘Getica’ Joint National Training Centre in Cincu,
central Romania, and a wreath-laying ceremony at the French Heroes Monument in
Bucharest. France has been leading the NATO battle group in Romania set up in
May. The battle groups created in Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary are
part of the borader set of measures taken by NATO to bolster its medium and
long-term deterrence and defence posture, following the war initiated by the
    Russian Federation in Ukraine.

    VISIT
The president of the Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis postponed his official
visit to Romania scheduled for Thursday, for unforeseen and unavoidable
reasons, the Swiss Embassy in Bucharest announced. President Cassis and
president Klaus Iohannis will try to find an alternative date for the meetings
scheduled as part of the visit. According to the Swiss Embassy, the two parties
will sign in the near future the Romanian-Swiss framework agreement concerning
the implementation of a second financial instalment aimed at reducing economic
and social disparities within the EU. Under the agreement, Switzerland will
provide 221.5 million Swiss francs for projects to be implemented in Romania
    until 2029.

PENSIONS Government spokesman Dan Cărbunaru announced that a
task force has been set up within the Labour Ministry in Bucharest, to analyse
the issue of the so-called special pensions, which are not based on
contributions during employment. The beneficiaries of such pensions include
magistrates, among other categories, and scores of them applied for retirement
after the World Bank requested the Romanian authorities to reform the system. This
was also a requirement in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, agreed on
by Romania with the European Commission.

October 2021. Most of the new automobiles registered during this period, i.e.
31,000, were local brand Dacia. As for
second hand car registrations in the first 10 months of the year, the number
    dropped 20% compared to 2021, to 270,000.

    MILITARY The
first shipment of French military equipment to join the NATO battle group deployed
to Cincu, in central Romania, reaches the country on Sunday, the defence
ministry announced. A second convoy, comprising a Leclerc main battle tank
company, is set to arrive in November. The NATO Battle Group Forward Presence
in Romania (BGFP) was created in May by transforming the Allied multinational
elements of the NATO Response Force deployed to our country. Upon France’s
proposal to take over the framework-nation role, the French battalion deployed
to Romania, considered the Spearhead of the Very High Readiness Joint Task
Force (VJTF), built up the BGFP on our national territory by integrating, on
rotational basis, Belgian and Dutch troops. BGFP contributes to the increase of
the Romanian military cooperation with France and, implicitly, to the consolidation
of the Euro-Atlantic space security on the Eastern Flank. Cooperation with the
strategic partners and the deployment of relevant combat structures on national
territory contribute to the increase of defence and deterrence capacity in the
context of the Ukraine war and the Black Sea region crisis, the defence
    ministry explains.

    BORDER Romania’s
border police announced that over 97,000 people entered Romania on Saturday, of
whom more than 9,500 were Ukrainian nationals, up 15.6% since the previous day.
According to current data, over 2.6 million Ukrainian citizens have entered
Romania since February 10, and nearly 4,400 of them have applied for asylum
    here.

    NRRP Romania is
set to receive EUR 2.6 bln in the coming days under the National Recovery and
Resilience Plan, to be channelled into the country’s economic recovery. The
funds are transferred after the European Commission authorised the payment of
the first instalments of the non-reimbursable aid and loan components. Romania submitted
the first payment request in May, after meeting the targets and benchmarks for
the 4th quarter of 2021. In September, the European Commission’s assessment of
these targets was approved and submitted to the Economic and Financial
Committee, which also approved it. The Romanian minister for investment and
European projects Marcel Boloş believes this is just the beginning of a long
road, which, if successfully completed, will translate into investments in
motorways, railways, schools and hospitals. The next payment request will
amount to EUR 3.2 bln, for which over 50 targets will have to be met, related
to the first half of this year. Romania may access a total of nearly EUR 30 bln
under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, of which it has already
received 2 pre-financing instalments amounting to a rough EUR 3.8 bln.

    COAL Romania has
increased its coal output to mitigate the energy crunch. The amounts extracted
in the first 8 months of the year went up 1.7% and imports rose by 13.5%, the
National Statistics Institute reports. The National Strategy and Forecast
Commission estimates for this year a coal output 10% higher than in 2021 and a
2.8% rise in imports. For 2023, the Commission forecasts an 8% increase in
    output.

    CHINA The Chinese
president Xi Jinping was re-elected on Sunday as leader of the ruling Communist
Party, thus becoming China’s strongest leader since Mao Zedong, the founder of
the Chinese communist regime, international news agencies report. Xi Jinping was
appointed for a 3rd five-year term in office by a largely reshuffled Central
Committee, and is very likely to be re-elected president as well in March. ‘China cannot develop without the world, and the world also
needs China,’ he said, and praised what he called the two miracles achieved
by his country-rapid economic development and long-term social stability. Xi
Jinping appointed many of his close allies in the Standing Committee, a 7-member
group in power in China. The all-powerful Politburo includes no women among its
members for the first time in 25 years.

    HANDBALL The
Romanian women’s handball champions, Rapid Bucharest, play at home today
against Storhamar, of Norway, in a Champions’ League Group B match. Rapid is
3rd in the ranking, after the Hungarian side Gyor and the French side Metz. On Saturday, vice-champions CSM Bucharest
lost their first game in the group, away from home, to defending champions
Vipers Kristiansand of Norway, 35-29. CSM ranks 3rd in Group A, after the
German side Bietigheim and Kristiansand. (AMP)

  • Alternative music festivals in Romania, back on track

Alternative music festivals in Romania, back on track

    The lay public’s quest
for cultural events as social experiences has seen an upsurge after the
COVID-19 pandemic, People are on the lookout for performances, festivals, fairs
and other events. The weather outside is really fine, so the cultural events
have been relocated to outdoor premises, in parks, gardens, public squares or
other areas with a special destination. A telling example of that is provided by
the Rocanotherworld Festival, held on the outskirts of Iasi, a city located in
north-eastern Romania, nearby the Aroneanu Lake, which is an artificial dam
lake in the Moldavian Plains. Alternative and electronic music, artistic manifestations,
conferences, food and merry-making, all that is set to populate the green area
on the lake shores in late June. Patricia Butucel is the director of the Rocanotherworld festival. She has
given details on what Rocanotherworld actually is and on the surprises the
organizers have in store for the public

    Rocanotherworld will reach its
7th edition this year and we’re happy we can return to normal, to an
event set to unfold just as it was before the pandemic, with no restrictions. The
2022 edition has got a novelty ready for everyone: we shall have the festival
on the shores of the Aroneanu Lake, it is a new and beautiful space which
perfectly suits this year’s trend. The artists performing at the festival are
local bands, but also national and foreign ones. We will also have a DJ on the
electronic music stage and we’re happy we’re going to get the festival started
with a really fine band, fresh, which is set to grow, and we’re dead positive
it will earn its place among the top alternative rock bands, with Paul Tihan.
We shall also have those of the Suie Paparude band, we will have the launch of
an album, we shall have two album launches, actually, Man to the Moon, and Madalina
Paval with an orchestra. Republic of Modova’s Zdob and Zdub will also come
over, then we will also have Golan, Alternosfera, Kumm, the lineup we’re going
to have will be so diversified, and as an absolute first we shall have a great
international band, the Nouvelle Vague. And we’re delighted because of the
start we’ve taken and because of this trend, an international one, that
including the electronic music stage as well. There will be DJs from our
country but also foreign DJs, from Portugal, we will also a woman DJ from
Ukraine who has relocated to Romania. We will also have an acoustic music
stage, we will have silent disco. We tried, like, to create a mix so that our
public can have as diversified an experience as possible. Zdob and Zdub, we saw
that they were, like, were we to make a chart, they were the favorites for our
public, as for Alternosfera or the French artists, Nouvelle Vague, likewise,
they are among the favorites for the Rocanotherworld public.

Here is the festival director, Patricia Butucel,
once again, this time speaking about the fans of the event, which will soon see
its seventh edition, about the public and the community that has revolved
    around the festival.

The Rocanotherworld public, we could say it mainly is a
faithful public since there are a great many people who have been with us since
the inaugural edition, in 2016. They proved they support us and that, actually,
together we are a community. And that also happened in the pandemic years,
since Rocanotherworld was held in 2020, but also in 2021, and we’re clearly
speaking about the pandemic editions, with all sorts of restrictions and, no
matter what the circumstances and the context was, people stood by us. Before,
we used to speak about, I don’t know, some sort of reluctance when we meant
festivals, now we can see people are much mop reopen, much more eager to attend
    events and especially outdoor events.

But how did people prepare for Rocanotherworld? What are the challenges
for the organizers and where is the festival’s 2022 edition heading to?

There’s this relaxation and charging side of the event
we want to offer to our public, but we also sought to organize an event which
for them is safe, especially after what
has happened in Bucharest as of late. This week I even went to see the local
authorities with whom we met quite often, we had meetings with the Anti-Drug
Squad, because we want the whole experience to remain a safe one, for our
participants, but also for the volunteers, for the artists involved, and for
all the people who will come to the festival.

Starting last year, Rocanotherworld has embarked on the path of
sustainability, and I’m saying that because we want to meet the Zero Waste set
target. But that is something utopian, for the time being, however, it’s the
least we can do, through organizing and positioning, to help people as well, to
encourage them to have a sustainable behavior and a nature-friendly one as
much as possible. So, as I was saying, as of last year, we have ticked our
short, medium and long-terms goals. We began by the separate collection of
waste. We used sustainable materials for the festival’s production and
signaling system. We replaced the classical promotion, made with OH-type
banners and advertising boards, with the digital OH side. We encouraged and
facilitated the use of alternative means of transport, such as electric push
scooters, bicycles or public transport. In effect, the entire planning of the
festival, the entire organization, was based on prevention, reusing, redesign
and recycling principles. What we’re going to do, actually, for 2022, we shall
prepare 4 days of unique experiences for the Rocanotherworld public, there will be something
people can live during the event. We will
have daytime activities, there will be relaxation areas, games, we will have an
escalation board, we will have silent disco, debates, acoustic stage, live
music, electronic music stages, so we will try to create a universe where
people can come and relax completely.

    Romanian national women’s
handball team has advanced to the main group stage as part of the ongoing World
    Women’s Handball Championship. Head-coach Adrian Vasile’s trainees were 2nd
placed in Group C, with two wins and one defeat on their record sheet. In this past Friday’s fixture, the Romanians trounced
the national team of Iran, 39-11. Romania succeeded another win, against minnows
Kazakhstan, 38 to 17. However, one of the world title hopefuls, the national
squad of Norway, thrashed Romania, 33-22.

    It
was only during the first fifteen minutes of play that the Romanians measured
up to the standard of their opponents, so much so that they even had a brief lead
during the game. However, at halftime, Norway had already secured a 17-11
advantage. In the second half, the Norwegians had the upper hand on the court,
and that was proved by the fact that the Romanians went 11 goals down. World-acclaimed
Romanian handballer Cristina Neagu’s absence made the difference during the
Romanian team’s attacking bouts. A lot less efficient without Neagu, the
Romanian squad’s offensive lineup was unable to overpower Norway’s very strong
    defensive game.

has advanced to Main Group II, with 2 points on their record sheet. On Thursday,
Romania goes against the Netherlands. On Saturday, our national squad plays Puerto
Rico, while this coming Monday, the Romanians are pitted against Sweden. Qualification
to the World Championships’ quarterfinals is secured by coming in 1st
or 2nd in the group stage. Realistically, that is something hard to
come by, since the Netherlands are the defending world champions, while Sweden
came in 4th at this year’s edition of the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

    Romania has failed
to qualify to the Olympics. At the previous edition of the world championship,
in 2019, Romania came in 12th.

DIPLOMACY The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, has talks today with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, on the sidelines of the EU – League of Arab States summit to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. The 2 officials will look at the bilateral relations and discuss concrete means to encourage and deepen the cooperation between the 2 countries, in all areas of mutual interest, particularly in the economy. According to a news release issued by the Presidency, the consultations will also be a good opportunity to discuss common priorities, in light of Romanias holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU and of Egypts holding the presidency of the African Union. At the summit in Egypt scheduled on Sunday and Monday, Klaus Iohannis will give an address presenting Romanias views on the cooperation between EU member states and the Arab League countries in view of finding common solutions to current, as well as medium and long term future challenges.

PES The Romanian PM Viorica Dăncilă had a meeting today with the PM of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, on the sidelines of the congress of the PES in Madrid. The 2 officials expressed their satisfaction with the excellent bilateral relationship, confirmed by the Strategic Partnership, and with the dynamics of bilateral sectorial dialogue. They also discussed the 2 countries cooperation within the EU, given that Romania and Spain have similar views on major topics for the future of the Union, such as the post-2020 financial framework, the cohesion policy, the internal market, justice and home affairs, the Neighbourhood Policy and the EU enlargement. On Friday the Romanian PM had talks with her counterpart from Malta, Joseph Muscat, and with the Portuguese PM, Antonio Costa.

PROTESTS Magistrates in Bucharest and several other Romanian cities protested on Friday in front of court buildings against new changes introduced to the justice laws. They also decided to suspend work for a week, as of Monday. Prosecutors and judges say that Ordinance 7, passed by the Government early this week, may lead to institutional deadlock and affect their independence. One of the provisions that angered the magistrates says that judges having previously worked as prosecutors may be appointed as chief prosecutors, and waives the seniority criterion. The emergency decree has been criticised both in Brussels, by the European Commission, and in Romania, by magistrate associations, the prosecutors division in the Higher Council of Magistracy and by the right-of-centre Opposition.

DRUGS Romanian police jointly with German authorities dismantled a crime group that distributed large amounts of illegal drugs, particularly in Bucharest night clubs. During the operation, which took place last year, the authorities seized 11 kilos of high-risk drugs, 800 euro and 2 vehicles. Five individuals were arrested. The operation was based on intelligence received from German authorities, which found and seized a package containing over 3 kilos of high-risk drugs, during a routine check on a coach traveling from Rotterdam to Bucharest. Romanian police say the amount had been sent to a crime group distributing large amounts of drugs in Bucharest.

WEATHER Romania struggles with exceptionally cold weather, particularly in the north and centre of the country. A code yellow alert for strong wind is in place across the country, except for a few counties in the south-west and the north. On Friday night authorities temporarily suspended navigation in all ports at the Black Sea, and railway traffic was also disrupted. The strong wind brought down tens of trees in the capital Bucharest on Friday night.

MOLDOVA In the Republic of Moldova, the election campaign for Parliament continues. The recently modified election legislation scrapped the so-called reflection day, so candidates may campaign on the very day of the election as well. For the first time, a mixed voting system will be used, with 50 MPs elected on party lists and another 51 in a single-choice system, in one voting round. Polls indicate President Igor Dodons pro-Russian Socialist party is ahead, with nearly 40% of voter intentions, followed by a pro-European right-of-centre election cartel called ACUM, with 25%, and the pro-Western Democratic Party with 15%. A referendum is also held at the same time, concerning the reduction of the number of MPs from 101 to 61 and the possibility to have them removed from office by citizens.

SPORTS The Romanian womens handball team CSM Bucharest plays today at home against the Hungarian side Gyor, in a game counting towards the Champions League main group stage. Also today, Dinamo Bucharest plays Sporting Lisabon away from home, in the first qualifying round for the 8th-finals of the mens version of the same competition.
