    WEATHER Monday will be the 14th day of uninterrupted hot weather in Romania. The highs of the day will be ranging between 31 and 38 degrees Celsius, slightly lower on the Black Sea coast. Meteorologists have issued fresh code yellow and orange alerts for large areas in several Romanian counties, whose residents are bracing up for more days of thermal discomfort. 36 degrees Celsius are expected in Bucharest and a rain shower in the evening.

     

    TENNIS A Romanian-Chinese pair made up of Monica Niculescu and Hanyu Guo has won the title of the doubles competition of the WTA 500 tennis tournament in Monterrey, Mexico. The two clinched a 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 win against the odds-on favourites Giuliana Olmos of Mexico and Alexandra Panova of Russia in a match that lasted one hour and 34 minutes. Monica and Hanyu got more than 47 thousand dollars and 500 WTA points. This has been Monica’s 12th title in the doubles contests and the second this year after the one in Strasbourg together with Cristina Bucsa of Spain. Niculescu, who will turn 37 on September 25th, has also lost 23 finals in doubles competitions and reaped three WTA titles in singles.

     

    NOMINEE The Romanian Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, leader of the Social-Democratic Party (PSD), was officially nominated as the PSD candidate for the upcoming presidential election during a PSD congress held in Bucharest yesterday. He was also reconfirmed as president of the Political-Parliamentarian formation, which is presently co-ruling Romania. In a speech delivered at the event, Ciolacu presented the programme with which he wants to win the highest position in Romania. The country’s industry, agriculture and public services are the main axes of his strategy. According to him, the Social-Democrats have managed to win the trust of the Romanians through unity, and he proposes a new type of president, ‘a president for all’. Most of the PSD members who took the floor during the Congress lashed out at their partners in the coalition that is presently ruling Romania and made ironical statements against the country’s incumbent president Klaus Iohannis. The Social-Democrats haven’t won the presidential election since the year 2000. The first round of the presidential ballot is due on November 24 and the second on December 8.

     

    MEDALS Students from Romania have walked away with four medals from the International Geography Olympiad hosted by the Irish capital Dublin over August 19th and 24th. David Mihai Dumitrescu, from the National College ‘Carol l’ in Craiova, south-western Romania, won gold in Dublin and Ian Mitocaru, from the National College in Iasi became silver medalist. Tudor Olariu from the Iasi-based ‘Costache Negruzzi College’ and Iustin Balan from the ‘Garabet Ibraileanu’ National College in Iasi stepped onto the podium third step. According to the Education Ministry in Bucharest, Romania’s team in Dublin has been coordinated by teachers Mihaela and Dorin Fiscutean of the National College in Iasi.

     

    COAL According to the National Institute for Statistics in Bucharest, Romania’s coal production dropped by 20% in the first six months of the year against the same period of 2023. The country’s coal imports have also dropped by 30%, the same report says. According to the estimates of the National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis, this downward trend is likely to continue in the following years as other energy-production facilities will become operational. The EU’s consumption and production of coal last year dropped by 23%, to its lowest level in recorded history, says the EU statistical Office, Eurostat. According to the same sources, the 100 million ton slump in the coal production in a single year is one of the sharpest ever registered in the EU for this type of fuel. With almost two thirds of the entire EU consumption, Germany and Poland were the biggest coal consumers.

     

    TALKS The government in Bucharest will hold talks next week on a first series of measures aimed at supporting the farmers affected by drought. Authorities are considering a series of compensations but also a new support package for the next year. The state will offer an insurance bonus of 3 thousand lei per hectare and amend the conditions needed for getting the Farmer Loan. Suspending the payment of installments for high interest credits until October next year is also being considered.

    WEATHER Meteorologists have issued code red alerts for extremely hot weather for seven counties in south-western Romania, whose residents are bracing up for temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius. Another eight counties and the capital city Bucharest are under a code orange alert for hot weather and a higher temperature-humidity index. The highs of the day here are to stay around 38 degrees Celsius, while in the rest of the territory they will be between 34 and 37 degrees.

     

    STATISTICS Greenhouse gas emissions caused by economic activities in the EU  last year dropped in 20 member countries, remained stable in Cyprus and rose in Romania, Malta, Lithuania, Latvia, Greece and Slovenia. The most significant reductions of these gases have been reported by Bulgaria, over 15% and Germany 7%. The process of curbing the greenhouse gas emissions has affected Europe’s GDP, which grew only 0.3%, according to Eurostat. Out of the 20 countries, which managed to curb their gas emissions, eight have also reported a drop in GDP, whereas 12 have announced minor GDP growths.

     

    FAIR The Gaudeamus Book Fair staged by Radio Romania remains open in the historical center of the city of Sibiu in central Romania over the weekend. In all its 15 pavilions, the book fair has brought together over 40 exhibitors, which include some of Romania’s best-known publishing houses as well as a series of suppliers of books, games, music and other educational materials. Gaudeamus book fair also includes editorial events, book launches and autograph shows, which can be watched online at gaudeamus.ro.

     

    MIDDLE EAST Talks regarding a ceasefire and the release of the Israeli hostages held by the Islamist Palestinian movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip are to be resumed in Cairo next week around a fresh US proposal. The information is included in a joint statement issued in Doha by the USA, Qatar and Egypt, the main mediators between Israel and Hamas. Washington presented a roadmap, which includes several stages for the cessation of hostilities and the release of the hostages kidnapped during the Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7th. Now the way is open to save lives, to help the population in Gaza and reduce regional tensions – the mediator countries say. In response Hamas rejected the new Israeli conditions – two Hamas representatives told France Press. According to them, the new conditions include the presence of the Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip along its border with Egypt. The war that followed the Hamas attack in October led to a disastrous situation for almost all the 2.4 million famished Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Furthermore, the Israeli bombardments and onslaught have caused the death of roughly 40 thousand Palestinians, mostly civilians.

    Weather – The heat wave will continue in Romania, in the next 24 hours, in all regions, and temperatures will reach the record highs for this period in the western and northwestern parts of the territory. The west and northwest and locally the center, south and east of Romania are in for some scorching days and the temperature-humidity index will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units in the plain and hilly areas. Maximum temperatures will range between 26 and 38 degrees Celsius, with the highest values ​​in the west. On Saturday, storms wreaked havoc in the south of the country, tearing off house roofs and felling trees.



    Judo – Romania got second place in the medal standings at the European Judo Open held on Saturday and Sunday, in Cluj-Napoca (northwest). All in all Romania won 11 medals – 2 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze, of which seven were obtained on Sunday. Azerbaijan took first place, and Turkey third place. 202 judokas from 32 countries lined up for the competition, 142 for the men’s competition and 60 for the women’s competition. Romania was represented by 31 athletes, 23 men and 8 women.



    Ukraine – The eastern Ukrainian city of Sloviansk on Sunday was the target of heavy bombings, which killed and injured many people, the citys mayor said. A spokeswoman for the regional administration reiterated the call on residents to leave the region, given that the front line is already only a few kilometers from Sloviansk. Further south, the city of Kramatorsk was hit for the second day in a row by missiles. On Sunday, Russia said it had conquered the eastern Ukrainian city of Lisiciansk and the entire Lugansk region. The occupation of the city of Lisiciansk would allow the Russian army to advance towards Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, both in the Donbas industrial region, which Moscow is trying to conquer.



    Paris – Peter Brook, a legendary figure in the theater industry and one of the most influential directors of the 20th century, died on Saturday at the age of 97 – AFP announced on Sunday. Born in the UK, but with much of his artistic career unfolding in France, Peter Brook reinvented the art of directing, favoring its fundamental elements – an actor in front of his audience instead of traditional sets. His best-known show is Mahabharata – a nine-hour epic inspired by Hindu mythology – which premiered in 1985 and was later adapted into a big-screen movie released in 1989. Peter Brook received numerous prizes and distinctions, with several Tony and Emmy awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, a Praemium Imperiale and a Prix Italia. (LS)
