    The Romanian women’s handball team has secured its
    participation in the main group stage of the European women’s handball
    championship, underway in Denmark. In a Group D fixture, Romania outclassed
    Poland this past Saturday in Kolding, 28-24.


    In Romania’s ice-hockey championship, Steaua Bucharest
    thrashed Sportul Studentesc, in the double-legged tie hosted by the Olympic
    Skating Rink in Brasov, 26-nil on Saturday and 18-3 on Sunday. CS Gheorgheni
    are at the top in the as-it-stands table, with 24 points in nine games. CSM Galati
    are the runner-up team, with 23 points in a similar number of games, nine.


    This past weekend saw matches being played, counting
    towards domestic League One’s round 12. On Friday, FC Voluntari were held by
    guest team Academica Clinceni to a 3-all draw. Also on Friday, Dinamo Bucharest
    grabbed a 1-nil away win against FC Arges. In Sfantu Gheorghe, the local team
    Sepsi were held by FC Botosani to a 2-all draw. In a match hosted by the
    National Arena in Bucharest, FCSB grabbed a 3-nil win against UTA Arad. The
    match pitting Viitorul Constanta against FC Hermannstadt was postponed, because
    of the latter team’s reported COVID-19 infections.


    FCSB are at the top of the table, with 30 points,
    followed by Universitatea Craiova, with 25 points.


    This past Sunday, the Romanian midfielder Răzvan Marin
    has scored his first goal for his Serie A team, Cagliari, in its away game
    against Verona, which ended 1-all. The fixture counted towards the 10th
    round of the Italian championship. In the ongoing competition season, Razvan
    Marin has been on the pitch for all 10 games Cagliari has played so far. In the
    game against Verona, in for the Romanian was Uruguayan footballer Christian
    Oliva starting minute 83. In the as-it-stands table, Cagliari are 11th-placed,
    with 12 points on their record sheet.

WTA 2nd-placed Simona Halep, WTA 30th placed Mihaela Buzarnescu and 83rd-placed Irina Begu are part of Romanias lineup in the fixture against France. Joining them are Monica Niculescu (132 WTA) and Raluca Olaru, no 34th in the doubles standings. Florin Segarceanu is the Romanian teams non-playing captain. Simona Halep will be the first to play in the singles contest, but Segarceanu said he is yet to decide on the second competitor in the singles.



    On Friday and Saturday, the national ice hockey championship final is scheduled. In Brasov, central Romania, Corona faces CSM Galati, in the 3rd and 4th matches. On aggregate the score is 1-all, after the first and the second match. The final is held in the best-in-five-matches system.



    Moving on to rugby, on Saturday, 3 National Rugby League matches will be played, counting towards the 11th round. Dinamo Bucharest plays Farul Constanta, Steaua Bucharest faces CSM Baia Mare, while Universitatea Cluj takes on HCM Buzau. The top 4 teams so far are CSM Bucharest with 44 points, Timisoara Saracens and Steaua Bucharest with 39 points each, and CSM Baia Mare, with 36 points on their record sheet. The 4 teams play in the final tournament.



    We go out with news from football. The weekend sees matches counting towards the 6th round, with Astra Giurgiu pitted against Universitatea Craiova in Group 1 on Friday. On Saturday, Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe takes on CFR Cluj, while on Sunday, Viitorul Constanta faces FCSB. CFR Cluj is at the top of the table, with 38 points, followed by FCSB with 35 and Universitatea Craiova, with 30 points.



    In Group 2, on Sunday, Gaz Metan Medias play a home game against Dunarea Calarasi. On Monday, Politehnica Iasi goes against Concordia Chiajna, while Dinamo Bucharest takes on FC Botosani.     JUSTICE – Romanian justice minister, Tudorel Toader, has today announced that the draft law meant to harmonize the provisions of the Criminal Codes with the rulings issued by the Constitutional Court will be sent for public debate and then submitted to Parliament for legislative procedures. He underlined that the draft does not establish a minimum ceiling for the prejudice in a case of abuse of office. Partially decriminalising the offence of abuse of office, by introducing a ceiling of some 45,000 Euro, under which such acts are not considered criminal offences, was one of the amendments introduced by Toader’s predecessor, Florin Iordache, in the controversial emergency decree number 13, adopted in January. The emergency decree which was later repealed, caused the largest street protests in post-communist Romania.



    CORRUPTION – The former head of the National Health Insurance House of Romania, Lucian Duta, has been subject to judicial restrictions pending trial, in a case in which he is accused of bribe taking. According to the anti-corruption prosecutors, he reportedly took bribe, in several instalments, exceeding eight million Euros, from representatives of various companies. In exchange for the money, Duta allegedly signed several contracts related to the national IT system, and the implementation of the health card. The former head of the National Health Insurance House of Romania should pay a 10 million Euro bail in 10 days time. Otherwise, the measure of judicial restrictions imposed on him will be replaced by a more severe measure.




    CONDAMNATION — The US, France and Great Britain have come up with a draft resolution condemning the chemical attack which left scores of dead in north-western Syria on Tuesday. The three countries are also demanding a complete and fast investigation into the incident. The draft has been forwarded to the 15 members of the UN Security Council ahead of today’s emergency meeting, requested by Paris and London in the wake of the attack. The US, France and Great Britain blame the regime of Bashar al Assad for the chemical attack, but the Syrian officials deny any involvement. Tuesday’s chemical attack is the second most severe attack since the start of the conflict in Syria. In 2013, another attack near Damascus left 1,400 people dead. We’ll have more on this issue, later in radio newsreel.



    EUROPEAN AFFAIRS – The Romanian minister delegate for European Affairs, Ana Birchall, is today continuing her visit to Paris. Earlier, she met, among others, with the minister of state for European affairs, Harlem Désir. The two officials have approached such issues as the future of the European Union, Brexit and the Schengen area. The agenda of talks also included issues related to preparations for Romania’s taking over the presidency of the EU Council in the fist half of 2019.




    HOCKEY — Romania’s national men’s ice hockey team on Tuesday evening defeated Serbia 4-1, in its second match of the IIHF World Championship, Second Division, Group A, hosted by the city of Galati, in eastern Romania. In the first match, Romania defeated Belgium 9-1. Romania will also meet Iceland on Thursday, Australia on Friday and Spain on Sunday. The Romanian team’s objective is to end the group in the first position, which secures promotion to the next stage of the competition.     BORDER POLICE — The Romanian border police announced it would strengthen border control checks starting Friday. The documents of all people crossing the border will be cross-checked in national and international databases, therefore the authorities expect waiting times to spike. According to a press release, on April 7 the authorities will implement an amendment brought to the Schengen Borders Code, adopted by the European Parliament and the European Council, aimed at improving the security of the EU and its citizens. The Romanian border police says all measures have been taken to reduce waiting times and ensure functional border checks and is making efforts to ensure a balance between the security of citizens and border crossing flows.



    DECREES — Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis today signed the two decrees for the appointment of the Ministers of the Environment and for Liaison with Parliament respectively. The swearing-in ceremony is due to take placer later today. The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, a junior coalition partner in the Government led by Social-Democrat Sorin Grindeanu, nominated Gratiela Gavrilescu for the position of Environment Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. Replacing Gavrilescu as the new Minister for Liaison with Parliament will be Viorel Ilie, also nominated by the Liberals and Democrats. One week ago the party leadership decided to withdraw political support for the party co-president, Daniel Constantin, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment, amidst tensions between him and the other co-president, Senate Speaker Calin Popescu-Tarcieanu.



    FAC — Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu is today taking part in the Foreign Affairs Council meeting held in Luxembourg. The main topics on the agenda are Syria, Yemen and Libya. Talks will be held in presence of Arab League Secretary General Aboul Gheit. In addition, the meeting of the Group for Moldova’s European Action will be held on the sidelines of the meeting, at the initiative of Romania and France.



    ELECTION IN SERBIA — The acting Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic on Sunday won the presidential election in Serbia. According to the Serbian Election Commission, Vucic grabbed over 55% of the vote, while the runner-up, current Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic, won only 15% of the vote. Seen as the new strongman of Serbian politics, Vucic is an ultranationalist turned pro-European Democrat. He pledged to support Serbia’s efforts to join the EU as well as maintain privileged relations with Russia. EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn, has congratulated the president elect, whom he called a partner and a friend.



    MILITARY EXERCISE — Three Romanian warships carrying 200 military onboard and three Turkish warships are taking part in the “Starfish” bilateral military exercise. The exercise is aimed at increasing interoperability between Romanian and Turkish naval forces. While docking in the port of Constanta, the Turkish military will also bring floral tributes to the Cemetery of Turkish War Heroes in Slobozia, southern Romania, and will visit the Museum of the Romanian Navy.



    VAT — Tourism Minister Mircea Titus Dobre today said he would submit the necessary documents to the Finance Ministry with a view to cutting VAT to 9% for travel agencies. The Minister says the move will encourage local travel agencies and hopes for the price of travel packages to drop. Minister Dobre has warned it might take a while before travel agencies will benefit from the VAT slash, as the European Commission must sanction the move.



    PROTESTS — The Moscow Police on Sunday arrested 30 people taking part in an anticorruption rally, the latest after last week’s large-scale protests. Radio Romania’s correspondent reports that opposition leader Aleksei Navalny, the organizer of last week’s protests, who was already placed under 15-day arrest for resisting arrest, says he is in no way connected to the latest protest. According to the Police, a thousand people protested on Sunday as compared to the nearly 100,000 people who protested on March 26. On Friday, several dozen Romanians protested before the Russian Embassy building in Bucharest, as a token of solidarity with the anticorruption protests in Russia.



    ICE HOCKEY — Romania’s national hockey team on Monday is playing Belgium in Group A, second division, at the World Championship hosted by Galati, southeastern Romania. On Tuesday Romania will play Serbia, Iceland on Thursday, Australia on Friday and Spain on Sunday. Last year in Zagreb, Romania ranked last in Group B, first division, and was relegated to Group A, second division.



    WEIGHTLIFTING — Monica Csengeri and Elena Ramona Andries of Romania won five medals on Sunday, of which one gold, at the European Weightlifting Championships in Split, Croatia. In the 48 kg category in the snatch event, Csengeri won gold while Andries grabbed bronze. In the clean and jerk event, Csengeri won silver. In the combined total event, Csengeri won silver while Andries got bronze. Romania’s delegation at the European Championships totals 13 athletes. (Translated by V. Palcu)
