Authorities in Romania are bracing up for the Delta-driven fourth wave

    Romania has exceeded 300 daily
infections with the novel coronavirus. In spite of the low number of infections
and the fact that the Delta variant hasn’t yet spread as expected, there are still
reasons for concern in Romania. Medical authorities here are expecting
infections with the Delta variant to be on the rise as the number of those
fully vaccinated has barely reached five million.

The latest data points to a rising
number of infections with the novel coronavirus among people below 40, while
the average age of those killed by the virus has also gone down, from 71 to 69.
Physician Valeriu Gheorghita, who coordinates Romania’s vaccine rollout, has
cautioned that although the number of cases remains low, the infection rate is
steady and progressive. Under a worst-case scenario, in the second half of
September, Romania could have over 15 hundred daily infections.

Valeriu Gheorghita: Pessimistic scenarios point to a potential
increase in the number of infections next month, when we are going to see a
higher number of daily cases, 15 hundred, 16 hundred in the second half of
September. Now we are having 9.3 infections per thousand in 14 days but we
expect this number to double in the next two weeks.

    Valeriu Gheorghita has reiterated that
the only solution for the containment of this pandemic is vaccination, which can
protect citizens from severe forms of illnesses.

    In another development, the ruling
coalition convened on Tuesday to find ways to step up the vaccine rollout in
this country, which may even include meal vouchers for those fully vaccinated. According
to Health Minister Ioana Mihaila, these vouchers will be somewhere around 20
    euros.

    Stronger immunity allows citizens
to better cope with the upcoming Delta-driven fourth wave, but it is the
responsibility of every Romanian to get the jab in order to minimize the risk
of being admitted to hospital, the Health Minister went on to say. According to
her, people must be responsible not only for their health but also for those
around. ‘It is important to avoid hospital treatment, which may lead to
overcrowded hospitals and for this we must get the vaccine’, Minister Mihaila
    also added.

  • A quarter of Romania’s population vaccinated

A quarter of Romania’s population vaccinated

    Over 4 million
people in Romania have received at least one dose of the anti-Covid vaccine,
which accounts for more than a quarter of the country’s eligible population, of
16 years of age and above. Out of these over 19% have got the booster dose,
while 6% only the first jab, according to data the national vaccination
platform posted on its Facebook page on Thursday. 12 million people with ages between 40-49,
who are making the majority, and between 16 and 19 are still to be immunized.

    Capital city
Bucharest with 36% and Cluj in north-western Romania, with 33% are topping the
table with the largest number of people vaccinated with at least one dose. Next
come the counties of Sibiu and Brasov, in central Romania, and also Timis in
    the west.

    The regions
at the bottom of the ranking are Giurgiu in the south, Botosani in the
north-east and Suceava in the north, the last with less than 12% people
    vaccinated.

    The vaccine
rollout continues at a pace of roughly 100 thousand people vaccinated a day,
being stepped up of late by novel vaccination methods. Authorities have
scrapped the planned lists on the national vaccination platform allowing the
Romanians to get the jab only by producing an ID. Drive throughs and the
so-called vaccination marathons have largely contributed to the successful
vaccine rollout. Mobile units have been dispatched to remote areas and
vaccination points have been opened on the premises of major enterprises around
    the country.

    Family
physicians have also joined the vaccination efforts making available the
vaccine to their patients. According to Romania’s Minister of Labour and Social
Protection, Raluca Turcan who has visited several rural regions, people in the
countryside, mainly those in the vulnerable categories, have not been
vaccinated yet although they want to.

    According to the
minister, mobile units would be a solution to this issue particularly for those
who cannot afford the transport to a remote vaccination center.

    ‘At present
the best investment is vaccination and the state allots all the necessary
resources so that everybody may benefit this facility’, presidential adviser
    Cosmin Marinescu said on Thursday.

    According to
the Romanian official, it is important to understand that vaccination is the
key to the resumption of all activities so that the economy may recover and we
all return to normality. In another development, the government is to kick off
a new information campaign on vaccination, which comprises three videos and an
    audio advertisement.

    ‘We are
targeting those who are still reluctant, those who are concerned about the idea
of vaccination, who need more arguments, besides those medical or scientific,’
says the president of the National Committee for the coordination of Romania’s
    vaccine rollout, Valeriu Gheorghita.

Group, the infection rate dropped to 1.30 per thousand in Bucharest and the
number of vaccinated people has exceeded one million. On Thursday the country
received 128 thousand doses of the Moderna vaccine, which are being distributed
across the country whose citizens can now get a jab without having to register
beforehand. Vaccine rollout is carried on in all the country’s centers,
including in its 10 drive-throughs. Another 950 new infection cases were

PLAN In its National Recovery and Resilience plan
(PNRR) Romania has included a series of reforms in several key areas and its
pledges have been well-received in Brussels, the country’s Prime Minister
Florin Citu says. According to the head of the Bucharest executive, the plan is
credible and doable and the cabinet members must work hard in the forthcoming
period to complete the projects that are to be funded. During the visit it has
recently paid to Brussels, the Romanian Prime Minister has assured the EU officials
of Romania’s commitment to implementing the reforms comprised in the ruling
programme, in the fiscal-budgetary strategy, as well as in the convergence
programme. Romania has pledged to present its PNRR by the end of May, with a
one month delay against the initial time scheduled by the European Union. Half
of the EU members have so far presented their national plans for funding.

POLL 45% of the Romanians intend to change their
job after the pandemic, shows a recent poll conducted by an online recruiting
platform. The main reason of the respondents is a higher pay. 11% want to go
through a professional retraining programme whereas 9% are ready to leave the
country. The categories standing most chances to find a job are IT experts and
    qualified workers.

TRAVEL Foreign Ministers from Central Europe have
recently tackled in Bratislava the idea of free travel after the end of the
coronavirus pandemic. The participants have agreed that during the holiday
season, vaccinated people from Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria
and Slovenia be allowed to travel freely to the other countries. Authorities in
the USA have lifted indoor mask mandates for vaccinated citizens as 35% of the
country’s population has got either the two-jab, or the single-jab vaccine. 161.8
million infections have been reported the world over so far and 3.3 million
people died, according to data released by worldmeters.info. Most of the
fatalities have been registered in the US, India and Brazil.

    TALKS The Romanian
government is to convene in Bucharest today for talks over the relaxation
measures to come into effect as of May 15th. The executive’s session is
preceded by a meeting of the National Committee for Emergency situations, which
is expected to come up with a series of relaxation measures, such as lifting
outdoor mask mandates with the exception of crowded places as well as the night
curfew. Shops are expected to return to their pre-quarantine timetables. The next
relaxation stage is expected to be implemented as of June 1st.
