    Athlete of the Week on RRI – Tennis player Laura Ioana Paar

    Romanian tennis player Laura Ioana
    Paar on Sunday won her first WTA title in the women’s doubles competition at
    the Lyon tournament, totaling some 275 thousand dollars in prize money. Laura
    and Julia Wachaczyk of Germany won 7-5, 6-4 against Lesley Kerkhove and Bibiane
    Schoofs of the Netherlands. For her achievement in Lyon, we have designated
    Laura Ioana Paar Athlete of the Week.


    In Lyon, the Romanian-German pair
    eased past the top favorites Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany and Mandy Minella of
    Luxembourg, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6. In the quarterfinals Paar and Wachaczyk knocked out
    Elixane Lechemia and Jessika Ponchet of France, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6. In the
    semifinals they edged out Vitalia Diatchenko and Natela Dzalamidze of Russia,
    6-3, 6-1. Laura Ioana Paar and Julia Wachaczyk will be awarded an
    11-thousand-euro check and 280 WTA points.


    Laura Ioana Paar was born in
    Bucharest on May 31, 1988. Prior to last year she played only in ITF
    tournaments. In 2019 she made her debut in the WTA circuit in Nurnberg,
    entering the main draw. In the first round of the qualifying phase she knocked
    out another Romanian, Raluca Serban. The tournament in Lyon was the first Laura
    enrolled in the women’s doubles. The win has made her climb 88 positions in the
    doubles standings, where she is now ranked 113th, her career best.
    In the singles, Laura is ranked 203rd. The highest position in the
    singles was 200th, which she held in February this year. (Translated

    Sportivul săptămânii – Jucătoarea de tenis Laura Ioana Paar

    Jucătoarea română de tenis Laura Ioana Paar a câştigat,
    duminică, la Lyon, primul său titlu WTA la dublu din carieră. În finala
    turneului, dotat cu premii de 275 de mii de dolari, Laura şi sportiva germană
    Julia Wachaczyk s-au impus cu 7-5, 6-4 în faţa olandezelor Lesley Kerkhove şi Bibiane
    Schoofs. Pentru victoria de la Lyon,
    Radio România Internaţional a desemnat-o pe Laura Ioana Paar Sportivul
    Săptămânii.


    La Lyon, perechea
    româno-germană a trecut în primul tur de principalele favorite, Anna-Lena
    Friedsam, din Germania, şi Mandy Minella, din Luxemburg, cu 6-4, 4-6, 10-6. În
    sferturile de finală, Paar şi Wachaczyk au câştigat în faţa franţuzoaicelor
    Elixane Lechemia şi Jessika Ponchet, cu 6-2, 4-6, 10-6, apoi, în semifinale,
    s-au impus în faţa rusoaicelor Vitalia Diatcenko şi Natela Dzalamidze, cu 6-3,
    6-1. Laura Ioana Paar şi Julia Wachaczyk vor fi recompensate pentru victorie cu
    10.952 de euro şi 280 de puncte WTA la dublu.


    Laura Ioana Paar
    s-a născut la Bucureşti în data de 31 mai 1988. Până anul trecut a jucat doar
    în turnee ITF. În 2019 a debutat în circuitul WTA la Nürnberg, intrând pe tabloul principal după ce a
    trecut în ultimul tur al calificărilor de o alta româncă, Raluca Şerban.
    Turneul de la Lyon a fost primul din circuitul WTA jucat de Laura la dublu.
    Victoria i-a adus un salt de 88 de poziţii în clasamentul mondial de dublu,
    unde acum se află pe locul 113, cel mai bun din carieră. La simplu, Laura se
    află pe locul 203. Cel mai sus a urcat în luna februarie a acestui an, şi anume
    pe 200.
