    Athlete of the week

Only one Romanian football team in the
ongoing competition season, early into 2023, has advanced to the European Cups’
upcoming stages. In the autumn of 2022, CFR Cluj qualified to the playoffs as
part of the European Conference League’s round of 16, ranking 2nd in
the competition’s Group G. In Rome last week, holders CFR competed for a place
in this year’s round of 16. CFR Cluj sustained a defeat by the narrowest of
margins in their away game against Lazio, ni-1. In two days’ time, the match deciding
the qualification in the League’s round of 16 will be played in Cluj. However,
we made mention of the match in Rome since it provided a record: CFR’s captain,
Mario Camora, is the footballer boasting most caps in the European Cups for a
Romanian squad. For this very reason, Radio Romania International has
designated CFR’s Portuguese-born left-back Mario Camora the Athlete of the week.

Up until the ongoing season, Marius Lacatus
was the footballer with most caps in European cups. We recall Marius Lacatus was
one of the stars of Steaua Bucharest, a team that saw its heyday in the 20th
century’s 1980s. Over 1984 and 1999, Lacatus played 72 matches in the European Champions
Cup, The Cup Winners’ Cup and the UEFA Cup. With Steaua Bucharest, in 1986 Lacătus won
the European Champions Cup, an unparalleled performance in Romanian
football. This past Thursday in Rome, Mario Camora played his 73rd
match in European competitions. Camora’s first such game was played on August 1st,
2012, when CFR Cluj defeated Slovan Liberec 1-nil, in a fixture counting
towards the Champions League’s 3rd preliminary round.

    Mario Camora was born
on September 21, 1986, in Portugal. He made his debut as an amateur footballer,
then in 2006, he turned pro, being signed up by second-tier team Beira-Mar. Mario
arrived in Romania in 2011, playing for CFR Cluj. Seven years later, on April
17, 2018, he broke the caps record for CFR, until
then held by another Portuguese, Cadú. In 2020, Mario Camora was granted
Romanian citizenship. Also in 2020, on October 8, he made his debut with the
national team, setting a new record. Being 37 years and 17 days old, Mario
Camora became Romanian national squad’s oldest first-time footballer. (EN)

MOLDOVA President Klaus Iohannis says Romania has stood and will
stand by the R. of Moldova and firmly condemns any foreign attempt at destabilising
this country. It is highly alarming to see public signs of attempts by the
Russian Federation to step in illegitimately and upset the democratic and
constitutional order of the R. of Moldova, a sovereign state that has chosen
its political direction through a free vote, the Romanian president said in a statement
issued on Wednesday. Klaus Iohannis reiterated that Moldova is not alone in facing
these challenges, and reconfirmed Romania’s unwavering support for the
sovereignty and territorial integrity of this country, within its
internationally recognised borders, and for its pro-European future. The
Romanian official also pointed out that Moldova belongs in the EU family, and
that this path is irreversible and must be followed with determination, courage
and ambition. The statement comes after on Monday the pro-Western president of
Moldova Maia Sandu announced Moscow was planning to force a change of the
political power in Moldova, using violence to destabilise the country.

AID Romania is sending further humanitarian
aid to Turkey and Syria in the wake of last week’s devastating earthquakes that
killed some 40,000 people. A new humanitarian flight by 3 Romanian Air Forces
aircraft today takes around 22 tonnes of goods donated by the Romanian
government to the people affected by the tremors in the 2 countries. Another 2
trains with basic necessity products have been already sent to Turkey, and 2
planes with humanitarian aid were sent to Syria on Tuesday. According to the UN,
9 million Syrian and 2.2 million Turkish nationals need aid. The Turkish Confederation
of Enterprises and Businesses says the disaster might cost the country 84 billion
    US dollars.

    UN The Romanian foreign minister
Bogdan Aurescu Tuesday had talks with the UN secretary general António
Guterres. The Romanian official was at the UN headquarters in New York, where
he was a speaker at the UN Security Council debate on Threats to international peace and
security: Sea-level rise: implications for international peace and security.
According to the foreign ministry, the 2 officials discussed climate change and
its consequences, as well as the situation in Ukraine one year after the start
of Russia’s illegal war of aggression. Bogdan Aurescu pointed out
that Russia’s irresponsible conduct, which violates the core principles of international
order, must end, and that it is particularly serious for a member of the UN
Security Council to have started this war. The Romanian foreign minister also
highlighted Romania’s support efforts, including the receiving of over 3.5
million Ukrainian refugees who have transited Romania. Current developments in
the R. of Moldova were also discussed.

DEFENCE Romania’s defence minister Angel Tîlvăr and the chief of
general staff Daniel Petrescu Tuesday took part in a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, held in Brussels
on the sidelines of the meeting of NATO defence ministers. According to the
Romanian defence ministry, since the start of Russia’s war of aggression
against Ukraine, Romania has provided shelter and aid to over 3.5 million
Ukrainian nationals who have transited the country, and has taken part in facilitating
the transit of nearly 12 million tonnes of grains from Ukraine to global
markets. Romania has stated repeatedly that the scope and regularity of the support
given to Ukraine must be maintained. Also on the sidelines of the meeting of
NATO defence ministers, Angel Tîlvăr had bilateral talks with his counterparts
from the UK, Ben Wallace, and Spain, Margarita Robles Fernandez. They discussed
the security situation in the Black Sea region and emphasised the need for
substantial Allied contribution to ensuring the effectiveness and credibility
of NATO’s defence posture on the eastern flank.

INFLATION The National Bank of Romania has revised its inflation
forecast for the end of this year from 11.2% estimated previously to 7%. According
to the Quarterly Inflation Report made public today by the central bank
governor Mugur Isarescu, at the end of 2024 the indicator will stand at 4.2%. Romania
has consolidated its position in the EU in terms of inflation, with the 9th
highest rate in the Union. Mugur Isărescu also said a balance must be achieved
between fighting inflation and avoiding a possible recession, and added that
the inflation forecast is marked by many uncertainties.

FOOTBALL CFR Cluj, the only Romanian team still
playing in the European competitions, Thursday takes on the Italian side Lazio Rome, away from home, in the
playoffs for the Conference League’s eighth-finals. The second leg of this
round is scheduled next week in Cluj-Napoca. According to a UEFA poll, the
Romanians are most likely to win. This season CFR Cluj finished the group stage 2nd in a group that also
included Sivasspor (Turkey), Slavia Prague (Czech Republic) and Ballkani
(Kosovo), while Lazio ended up in the Conference League playoffs after
finishing 3rd in its group, after Feyenoord (the Netherlands) and
    Midtjylland (Denmark). (AMP)

ongoing season, in the men’s as well as in the women’s version of the competition.
In the men’s competition, Dinamo Bucharest in the past weeks has grabbed three
consecutive wins and has climbed up to the 4th place in Group A. On Thursday,
holders Dinamo can consolidate and even improve their position provided they
secure a home win in the match against 7th-placed team in the group,
    PPD Zagreb,

    In the women’s version
of the League, Rapid Bucharest are also 4th-placed. This past Saturday, title holders
Rapid saw their first defeat this season, being outclassed by Hungarian opponents,
Gyor, away from home, 30-32. This coming Sunday in Bucharest, Gyor play the
return leg against Rapid. At stake is securing one of the first two positions
in the group which books the ticket for the quarterfinals. The 3rd,
the 4th, the 5th and the 6th positions will send
the teams to the play-offs. The winners are then entitled to playing in the
    quarterfinals.

    CSM Bucharest stands
real chances to play straight in the League’s quarterfinals. Romania’s
vice-champion team is 2nd-placed in group A, on a par with the
winner of the League’s 2021-2022 edition, top-of-the table squad Vipers
Kristiansand of Norway. On Saturday, Cristina Neagu and her team mates travel
to Budapest for the return leg against Ferencvaros, a team they outclassed this
    past Sunday, 30-24.

Also in women’s handball, this coming weekend
will see fixtures being played, counting towards the second leg of the EHF
European League’s third preliminary round. Three Romanian teams prove their mettle
in the competition. On Saturday, Măgura Cisnădie play a home game against
Hungary’s Siófok, in the wake of a 24-33 first-leg defeat. On Sunday, Râmnicu
Vâlcea Municipal Sport Club play a home fixture against Swedish team Höör whom
they had no problem defeating last week, 31 – 24, away from home. Also on
Sunday, the current National League leader, Gloria Buzău, play a home game
against Hungarian team Mosonmagyaróvár, in the wake of a 26-29 defeat in Hungary.
The winning teams of the third
preliminary round will play in the European League’ group stage in early 2023. (EN).

It’s interesting to notice that as of late,
quite a few deserving athletes, born abroad, have settled in Romania. Many of them applied
for the Romania citizenship, which they were granted, then they competed, internationally,
for Romania. A telling example of that is the Russian-born Albert Saritov, an athlete who won bronze for Romania in the freestyle wrestling competition, at
    the Rio Olympics, in 2016.

In September this year, two top-flight
handball players, signed up by title holders Dinamo Bucharest, were granted
Romanian citizenship: the Iranian Saeid Heidarirad și the
Croat Ante Kuduz. Both athletes have had noteworthy contributions to Dynamo’s
domestic and international feats. Now the path has been opened to both of them for a place in Romania’s international team.

    This past Thursday,
in a Champions League fixture, Dinamo grabbed a 32 – 27 win against Wisla Plock. Goalkeeper Saeid Heidarirad had a most
significant contribution to Dinamo’s excellent run in the competition.
Heidarirad had five saves, just like Dinamo’s other goalie, the Algerian Khalifa Ghedbane. However, we need to add that Ghedbane’s average
save ratio stood at 18.5 %, while Saeid’s accounted for 50%. For his most remarkable
efficiency, crucial for Dynamo’s success against Wisla Plock, Radio Romania International
designated Saeid Heidarirad the Athlete of the week.

    Saeid Heidarirad
was born on September 22, 1990, in the Iranian town of Selseleh. Heidarirad boasts 32 caps for Iran’s national
team. He has been playing for Dinamo for six years. Arguably one of Champions League’s
best goal keepers, Heidarirad turned down many offers from other countries,
opting for continuing to play in Romania. Now, with Dinamo, he stands real
chances to advance to the Champions League’s play-off stage, provided Dinamo
wins in the return leg against Wisla Plock this coming Thursday. Dinamo are
5th-placed in group A, while Wisla, 6th. The first six teams will be
making headway in the competition. (EN)

It appears that, as of late, everything has been going their way. We’re speaking
about Romanian women’s handball club teams. The two squads representing Romania
in the Champions League had an unprecedented competition season debut. For the
first time ever in the Champions League, title holders Rapid are the only Romanian
team with a no-defeat record in the League’s ongoing season. In six fixtures,
Rapid secured four wins and drew twice. They are 2nd-placed in Group
B, on a par with the leader, the very strong Hungarian team Gyor, whom they are
pitted against in the Champions League’s two upcoming rounds.

The team that in the Champions League’s last two competition
seasons represented Romania, and the team that walked away with the League’s
trophy in 2016, CSM Bucharest, has also secured its presence in the League this
year. In Group A, CSM has joined Germany’s Bietigheim and Vipers Kristiansand of Norway. All three teams have four wins and a draw on
their record sheet. In direct matches, CSM drew against German title
holders and sustained a defeat in Norway. CSM Bucharest are in for a daunting
task in the next two games they will play against Ferencváros Budapest of Hungary.

The Champions League will interrupt until December 3rd
and the 4th because of the European Championship due to kick-start in
Slovenia, North Macedonia and Montenegro next week. In Group C, Romania will
join France, the Low Countries team and North Macedonia. The fixtures will be played
in Skopje. The first three teams in descending order, in each of the four
groups, advance to the Championship’s main group stage. France and the Low
Countries are top and second-seeded, respectively, while Romania will fight host
team North Macedonia for the 3rd position in the group. On Saturday,
November 3rd, Romania will take on the Low Countries team, in its
debut fixture as part of the 2022 edition of the European Championship. On November the
5th Romania will face France, while on Wednesday, November 9th,
our national squad go against North Macedonia.(EN)
