    Helsinki — The Romanian defense minister Gabriel Leş participated on Wednesday and Thursday in Helsinki in the informal meeting of the EU defense ministers. The meeting focused on artificial intelligence and new technologies, the impact of climate change and of the environment on security and defense as well as the issue of a coordinated maritime presence. The issue of hybrid threats was tackled during a joint meeting with the foreign ministers. Minister Leş hailed the effort to increase visibility of artificial intelligence on the EU’s strategic agenda. Also, the Romanian defense minister supported the efforts aimed at identifying solutions for sustainable energy in the field of defense and reiterated Romania’s constant support in this regard. During its presidency of the Council of the EU, Romania organized the 4th meeting of the advisory forum on energy sustainability in the defense and security fields.



    Cyprus – The minister for the Romanians abroad Natalia Intotero, who was on a working visit to the Republic of Cyprus, met with the Cypriot president Nikos Anastasiadis with whom she talked about the Romanian community in Cyprus, the two countries’ bilateral relation and the projects run by the Romanian ministry. Minister Intotero highlighted the initiatives for promoting Romania’s values all over the world, the programs run by the Romanian government with a view to supporting the Romanian communities abroad to promote and preserve their ethnic, cultural and linguistic identity. Minister Intotero also had a meeting with the members of the Romanian community in Cyprus. In turn, president Nikos Anastasiadis congratulated the Romanian authorities for their interest in the Romanian communities aboard and for setting up of a ministry meant to deal with their problems.



    Film festival — The 76th edition of the ‘Mostra’ International Film Festival continues in Venice until September 7. The event is officially recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations as the oldest festival in the world. This year, 21 films will be competing for the Golden Lion. Romanian cinematography will be represented by the documentary ‘Colectiv’ by Alexander Nanau, a movie whose world premiere will be on September 4. The film describes the aftermath of the fire that the broke out during a rock concert in the Colectiv club in Bucharest, on October 30, 2015 which killed 64 and wounded many.



    Volleyball — Romania’s volleyball team was defeated on Thursday by the team of Azerbaijan 3-0 in their last match in Group C of the European Championship hosted by Budapest. In the first 4 matches in the group, Romania defeated the teams of Hungary and Estonia 3-1 each and lost to the Netherlands 0-3 and Croatia 1-3. The first 4 teams in the group will qualify to the eighth finals of the competition. Romania returned to a European tournament final after 4 years. The Romanians’ best result in the European Championship was the bronze medal in 1963. (update by L. Simion)

    PARTNERSHIP
    Romania intends to put into
    practice by the end of next year as many Eastern Partnership objectives as
    possible including energy and digital connectivity, participants in a business
    forum staged by the Foreign Ministry in Bucharest on Tuesday said. The event,
    held under Romania’s EU presidency, involved the participation of government
    officials and representatives of the EU business environment as well as from
    Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
    Over 20 events have been staged during Romania’s mandate at the helm of the
    European Union with a view to bringing significant progress in the relation
    between Eastern Partnership countries and the EU members.












    FLAG
    On the National Flag Day on Wednesday, Romania’s Defence Ministry is staging in
    major cities across the country a series of public events devoted to the
    national flag. The National Flag Day, on June 26th was established
    in 1998 to mark the moment during the Revolution of 1848, when the tricolor was
    adopted as a national symbol.










    JUSTICE Romania’s government would no longer issue emergency ordinances
    in the field of justice, Prime Minister Viorica Dancila announced on Tuesday also
    adding the citizens’ opinion would be respected. The Prime Minister went on to
    say that any legislative amendment in this field must be subjected to
    transparent debates together with professional organizations. In a report
    published on Monday, the Venice Commission recommended that the Romanian
    government drastically limit the use of emergency ordinances in justice and seriously
    reconsider the need for setting up a special section for the investigation of magistrates,
    its institutional structure and functioning principles.










    GAMES Romanian table tennis players, Ovidiu Ionescu and Bernadette Szocs
    walked away with silver from the mixed doubles event part of the European Games
    underway in Minsk. On Tuesday night the Romanians were defeated in finals by
    Patrick Franziska and Petrisa Solja of Germany 3-0. Several athletes from
    Romania have so far become medalists at the European Games in Minsk. Laura
    Georgeta Coman became gold medalist in the 10-meter air rifle event. Dacian
    Barna and Andreea Bogati stepped onto the second step of the podium in the
    aerobic gymnastics contest and so did Ovidiu Ionescu and Bernadette Szocs in
    the table tennis contest. Three Romanians, Daniela Poroineanu, Anda Mihaela
    Valvoi and Alina-Petronela Paunescu have obtained bronze medals in the Sambo
    contest of the aforementioned European Games where Romania is being represented
    by a delegation of 123 athletes. Some of these results are counting towards qualification
    for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

    EASTER Orthodox and Greek-Catholic believers, including from Romania – a
    country with an Orthodox majority – have entered the Bright Week, when they
    greet each other with the traditional formula, ‘Christ is risen’ ‘He is risen,
    indeed’. The formula is aimed at publicly expressing the Christian belief in
    Christ’s resurrection. On Monday Romanians also celebrated St. George, a
    Christian martyr who is also the patron saint of several cities across the
    country as well as of Romania’s Ground Forces.








    MESSAGE Romanian president Klaus Iohannis on Monday conveyed a message on
    the occasion of the Veterans Day. ‘Romania’s soldiers did their duty in the
    Independence war and in the two world wars. Our troops continue to serve in
    various operation theatres in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Western Balkans’, the
    Romanian president also added. The country’s Defence Minister, Gabriel Les, has
    also conveyed a message in which he says that ‘it’s our duty to respect those
    who fought so that we may live in an independent and free country. We should
    learn this lesson in patriotism and pass it down to the next generations. Romania
    still has 700 thousand war veterans.








    CONGRATS
    Romania’s Social-Democratic
    Prime Minister Viorica Dancila has congratulated her Spanish counterpart Pedro
    Sanchez on the victory obtained by his party in the snap parliamentary
    elections on Sunday. In a communiqué issued by the Executive in Bucharest,
    Dancila has reiterated Romania’s readiness to carry on and diversify the
    excellent bilateral dialogue, to strengthen and deepen the strategic
    partnership between the two countries in key domains such as infrastructure,
    energy, agriculture, domestic affairs and European policies. Dancila has voiced
    hope the Romanian Diaspora in Spain will continue to represent a strong link in
    the bilateral relations. Pedro Sanchez has obtained a clear win in the election
    but is short of majority in Spain’s Legislature. Turnout stayed at 75%, the
    highest in recent years.








    FREQUENCIES Dear friends, Radio Romania International operated new
    changes into the frequencies of its transmissions, which came into effect on
    April 27th. So, the RRI broadcast at 3:00 UTC to North America, (the
    West Coast) can be received on the frequency of 7375 kHz in the analogue
    system, while our programmes to India are carried by 13630 kHz in the DRM
    system.
