    FAIR Romania will be participating in the world’s biggest fair of bioproducts, BioFach 2025, due in Nurnberg, Germany, over February 11 and 14, the Bio-Romania Association announced on Friday. Bio-Romania is supported by the government through the Romanian Agency of Investment and Foreign Trade. According to the aforementioned association, Romania has been participating in BioFach for the past 20 years. As early as 1990, BioFach became the main meeting point of producers from the world over, offering the participants numerous network opportunities and also being an idea hub for all the main players in the field organic production.

     

    PROTESTS Thousands of police officers and employees from defence, public order and national security institutions, as well as reserve officers from all over Romania took to the streets of Bucharest on Friday. They called on the government to review an order that significantly reduced their incomes. The act scraps overtime pay and payments for days worked on weekends or public holidays. The protesters argue that the income of operational police officers will be severely affected, with decreases ranging between 200 and 400 Euros. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu pledged on Friday that the issue of overtime pay in the field of public order would be regulated by Parliament in early February.

     

    RUSSIA The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs firmly condemns the Russian forces’ irresponsible attacks that violate all the norms of international law, and emphasizes that Russia’s illegal and unprovoked aggression against Ukraine generates risks for the entire region. The statement was made as the monitoring and surveillance systems of Romania’s Defence Ministry Friday morning noted violations of Romanian airspace, in Tulcea county, after Russian forces resumed their drone attacks on civilian targets and port infrastructure in Ukraine. ‘Respect for sovereignty, security and peace are obligations that the Russian Federation violates systematically and without provocation. The persistent aggressive actions, the illegal occupation of some of the neighboring territories and the illegal full-scale war that Russia has been waging for almost 3 years against a sovereign neighbor are a persistent and serious threat not only to Ukraine but to the entire Black Sea region and NATO’s eastern flank,’ the foreign ministry says. The Foreign Ministry and the Defence Ministry also mention that they have been informing NATO in real time about the situations caused by these attacks, and remain in permanent contact with it.

     

    FLU Flu vaccination remains the easiest, safest and most effective protection method against seasonal diseases, Romanian doctors reiterate amid increases in the number of respiratory infections. Specialists emphasize that as the percentage of the vaccinated population increased, flu viruses spread in communities decreases. A National Institute for Public Health report shows that the number of people diagnosed with respiratory infections has doubled, with almost 91,000 cases reported in the last week. There are almost 600 patients diagnosed with clinical flu and over 200 for whom lab tests have confirmed infection with the flu virus, most of them in Bucharest, Cluj, Braşov, Constanţa, Alba and Galaţi. Five more people have died from the flu, bringing the death toll since the beginning of the season up to 9.

     

    TENNIS The Romanian tennis players Gabriela Ruse and Jaqueline Cristian, in separate pairs, qualified for the second round of the women’s doubles event at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, after winning their respective matches on Friday in Melbourne. Ruse and Ukraine’s Marta Kostiuk won against the Australians Destanee Aiuava and Maddison Inglis 6-4, 7-6 (7/2), and in the second round they will face strong opponents in Elise Mertens (Belgium) and Ellen Perez (Australia), seeded 6th. Jaqueline Cristian and her Italian partner Camilla Rosatello defeated Cristina Bucşa (Spain)/Iana Sizikova (Russia) 6-2, 6-7 (2/7), 6-4. Cristian and Rosatello will next face Leylah Fernandez (Canada) and Nadia Kicenok (Ukraine), seeded 16th. In another first-round match in the women’s doubles, Monica Niculescu and Sofia Kenin (US) were defeated by Miyu Kato (Japan)/Renata Zarazua (Mexico), 6-4, 6-4. In the men’s doubles, the Romanian-Argentine pair Victor Cornea/Mariano Navone was defeated in the second round by Germany’s Kevin Krawietz/Tim Puetz, 4-6, 6-1.

    The year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, ended last
    week in Melbourne.




    Novak Djokovic won the men’s competition, the present edition actually
    being the tenth he has won in his entire career. The Serbian player has also
    added his 22nd Grand Slam trophy equaling the record so far held by Spanish
    Rafael Nadal. The women’s competition was won by the 24-year-old Arina
    Sabalenka of Belarus, who obtained her first Grand Slam win. She presently
    comes second in the world’s ranking after Polish Iga Swiatek.






    Romania was represented only in the women’s competition where Irina Begu
    made it to the second round while Monica Niculescu reached the eighth finals
    together with Swiss Viktorija Golubic. The best performance in the
    aforementioned competition was obtained by Elena-Gabriela Ruse, who made it to
    the semifinals together with Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk. The two eventually
    conceded defeat to second-seeded Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of
    the Czech Republic who eventually emerged as winners. For the performance she
    obtained in Melbourne, Radio Romania International has designated Gabriela Ruse
    athlete of the week.

    Sportivul săptămânii: Jucătoarea de tenis Elena-Gabriela Ruse

    La sfârșitul săptămânii trecute s-a
    încheiat, la Melbourne, o nouă ediție a Openului Australiei la tenis. Primul
    turneu de Mare Șlem al anului a fost câștigat, la masculin, de Novak Djokovic,
    aflat la al zecelea Open australian câștigat în carieră. Totodată, sârbul a
    ajuns la al 22-lea trofeu de Mare Șlem, egalând recordul deținut până acum de
    spaniolul Rafael Nadal. Mai mult, de luni, Djokovic a urcat pe primul loc în
    clasamentul masculin mondial. La feminin s-a impus Arina Sabalenka, din
    Belarus, o jucătoare în vârstă de 24 de ani, aflată la prima sa victorie de
    Mare Șlem. Ea a urcat pe locul doi în ierarhia feminină, unde poloneza Iga
    Swiateik este lider detașat.


    România a fost reprezentată, la
    Melbourne, în întrecerile de seniori, doar de fete. La simplu, a ajuns în turul
    secund numai Irina Begu. La dublu, Monica Niculescu a mers până în optimile de
    finală, alături de elveţianca Viktorija Golubic. Cel mai departe a ajuns
    Elena-Gabriela Ruse, respectiv până în semifinale, alături de ucraineanca Marta
    Kostiuk. În drumul către finală, perechea româno – ucraineană a fost învinsă de
    cuplul ceh Barbora Krejcikova / Katerina Siniakova, cap de serie numărul unu, care
    ulterior a câştigat şi trofeul. Pentru Ruse și Kostiuk, calificarea în
    semifinale a reprezentat cea mai bună performanță la un turneu de Mare Șlem.
    Totodată, Radio România Internațional a desemnat-o pe Elena-Gabriela Ruse
    Sportivul Săptămânii.


    Elena-Gabriela Ruse s-a născut la 6
    noiembrie 1997, la Bucureşti. A început să joace tenis la patru ani şi
    jumătate, la Dinamo Bucureşti. A câştigat, în carieră, un singur turneu WTA la
    simplu, și anume în 2021, la Hamburg. În același an a fost finalistă la Palermo.
    Ocupă, la simplu, locul 144 în clasamentul mondial. Cel mai sus a urcat în luna
    mai a anului trecut, și anume pe locul 51. La dublu ocupă, în acest moment,
    poziția cu numărul 40, cea mai înaltă din întreaga sa carieră.

    Echipa feminină de handbal CSM Bucureşti a făcut un nou pas mare către
    sferturile de finală ale Ligii Campionilor. În Grupa A, etapa a 11-a, elevele
    antrenorului Adrian Vasile au trecut categoric, la Bucureşti, cu 40 la 31 de
    Odense, campioana Danemarcei. Cele mai bune marcatoare ale CSM-ului au fost
    Cristina Neagu, cu 10 goluri, apoi Elizabeth Omoregie şi Crina Pintea, cu câte
    6. Campioana României ocupă locul întâi în grupă, cu 19 puncte. Urmează echipa
    norvegiană Vipers Kristiansand, câştigătoarea ultimei ediţii a Ligii, cu 17.
    CSM mai are nevoie de un punct în următoarele trei jocuri pentru a-şi asigura
    calificarea în sferturile de finală ale competiţiei. Cristina Neagu şi colegele
    sale vor juca următorul meci duminică, în Germania, cu Bietigheim.


    Cealaltă reprezentantă a României în Liga Campionilor, Rapid Bucureşti, a
    pierdut cu 30 la 35 jocul disputat în Danemarca,
    la Esbjerg.     Cea mai eficientă jucătoare a campioanei României a fost extrema
    spaniolă Jennifer Gutierrez Bermejo, cu 9 goluri. Rapid se află pe locul 4 în
    grupa B, cu 16 puncte, la egalitate cu Esbjerg, formaţia de pe locul 3. Pe
    primul loc este echipa franceză Metz, cu 19 puncte. Urmează gruparea maghiară
    Győr, cu 18. Rapid va juca următorul meci duminică, 22 ianuarie, acasă, cu campioana
    Turciei, Kastamonu. Merg direct în sferturile de finală ale Ligii Campionilor
    doar echipele de pe primele două locuri ale fiecărei grupe. Formaţiile de pe
    poziţiile 3, 4, 5 şi 6 joacă, încrucişat, partide de baraj.


    În EHF European League, a doua competiţie continentală, ca valoare, SCM
    Râmnicu Vâlcea a pierdut cu 22 la 24 jocul disputat în deplasare, la Issy-Les-Moulineaux,
    în Grupa D, cu echipa franceză Paris 92.     Ucraineanca Irina Glibko a fost cea
    mai bună marcatoare a formaţiei române, cu 6 goluri. În grupă, echipa germană
    Thüringer ocupă locul întâi, cu 4 puncte din două jocuri. Urmează Vâlcea şi
    Paris 92, cu câte două puncte. Pe ultimul loc se află formaţia maghiară Vác,
    fără niciun punct. Duminică, Vâlcea va juca tot în deplasare, cu Thüringer.

    În aceste zile, aproape toată crema tenisului mondial se află în Australia,
    în aşteptarea Openului de la Melbourne. Au loc turnee atât pe continent, cât şi
    în împrejurimi, precum în Tasmania sau în Noua Zeelandă. La antipozi se află şi
    cele mai bune jucătoare de tenis din România, care nu se comportă deloc rău.
    Săptămâna trecută, de pildă, Irina Begu a ajuns până în semifinalele turneului
    Adelaide International 1, competiţie de tip WTA 500, dotată cu premii de peste
    826 de mii de dolari americani, performanţă pentru care Radio România Internaţional
    a desemnat-o Sportivul Săptămânii.


    La Adelaide, Begu a trecut în primul tur de jucătoarea americană Shelby
    Rogers, cu 3-6, 7-6, 6-1. A fost primul meci al anului 2023 jucat de româncă. A
    urmat jocul din optimile de finală cu letona Jelena Ostapenko, favorita numărul
    şapte a turneului, câştigat categoric de Irina , cu 6-3, 6-0. În sferturile de
    finală, Begu a trecut de rusoaica Veronika Kudermetova, a patra pe lista
    capilor de serie, cu 7-5, 6-4, după mai bine de două ore de joc. În semifinale
    însă, românca a cedat în faţa bielorusei Arina Sabalenka, în două seturi: 3-6, 2-6.
    S-a ales, pentru evoluţia sa, cu 43.323 de dolari şi cu 185 de puncte WTA. Ulterior,
    Sabalenka a câştigat turneul, trecând în finală de cehoaica Linda Noskova cu
    6-3, 7-6.


    Irina Camelia
    Begu s-a născut la București, pe 26 august 1990. A câştigat în carieră, la
    simplu, cinci turnee WTA: la Taşkent, în 2012, apoi la Seul, în 2015, la
    Florianopolis, un an mai târziu, la
    Bucureşti, în 2017, apoi în 2022, la Palermo. La dublu are nouă titluri
    câștigate în circuitul feminin. S-a
    impus la Hobart, în 2012, alături de Monica Niculescu, la ‘s-Hertogenbosch, în
    2013, cu Anabel Medina Garrigues, la Rio de Janeiro, în 2014, cu Maria
    Irigoyen, apoi la Seul, în acelaşi an, cu Lara Arruabarrena, şi la Bucureşti,
    în 2017, împreună cu Raluca Olaru. Tot în 2017 a câștigat la Tianjin, alături
    de Sara Errani. În 2018 a obţinut alte două titluri WTA la dublu, și anume la
    Shenzen, alături de Simona Halep, şi, din nou, la Bucureşti, de data aceasta cu
    Andreea Mitu. Ultimul său titlu la dublu a fost câștigat în 2019, la Openul
    Thailandei, alături de Monica Niculescu. În clasamentul mondial ocupă locul 28 la
    simplu şi 166 la dublu.

    Sportivul anului 2022 – Înotătorul David Popovici

    În ziua de 9
    iulie 1922, la Alameda, în California, Johnny Weissmuller înota suta de metri
    sub un minut, înregistrând un nou record mondial. Născut lângă Timişoara, la
    Freidorf, el urma să devină celebru atât prin victoriile sale olimpice, cât mai
    ales prin rolul principal din filmul Tarzan, omul maimuţă. După 100 de ani,
    un alt sportiv născut pe pământ românesc a bătut recordul mondial la suta de
    metri liber, devenind, practic, în lumina performanţelor omologate oficial, cel
    mai rapid înotător din istorie. La Europenele de la Roma, sâmbătă, 13 august
    2022, românul David Popovici a terminat cursa de 100 de metri în 46 de secunde
    şi 86 de sutimi. El a bătut astfel un record vechi de 13 ani, deţinut de
    brazilianul Cesar Cielo Filho, care, tot la Roma, dar la Mondiale, în 2009,
    înregistra 46 de secunde şi 91 de sutimi, pe vremea când costumele speciale
    destinate măririi vitezei erau încă permise.


    Dincolo de
    recordul mondial de la Roma, David Popovici a câştigat, în 2022, titlurile
    mondiale şi europene la 100 şi 200 de metri liber atât la seniori, cât şi la
    juniori. Cu atâtea medalii, nu putea rata titlul de Sportivul Anului 2022 la
    Radio România Internaţional. A triumfat întâi la Mondialele de seniori din
    iunie, de la Budapesta. Cele două titluri câștigate de el în capitala Ungariei,
    în probele de 100 și 200 de metri liber, au reprezentat premiere pentru sportul
    românesc.


    Mii de
    suporteri ai nataţiei româneşti s-au strâns apoi, în iulie, la noul complex
    acvatic din Otopeni, oraş situat în apropierea Bucureştiului, pentru a-l vedea
    pe David Popovici la Europenele de juniori. România a obținut 9 medalii. David s-a impus la
    50, 100 şi 200 de metri liber. A fost totodată părtaş la medalia de aur
    câştigată de ştafeta masculină de 4 x 100 de metri liber şi la argintul adus de
    ştafeta mixtă de 4 x 100 de metri liber. România s-a
    situat pe locul 3 în clasamentul pe naţiuni, după Ungaria și Polonia.


    Au venit apoi,
    în august, Campionatele Europene de la Roma şi recordul mondial la 100 de metri
    liber. David a fost foarte aproape de recordul mondial şi în finala europeană

    sutimi, nou record mondial şi european de juniori, precum şi nou record al Campionatelor
    Europene. A fost la mai puţin de o secundă, mai exact la 97 de sutimi, de
    recordul deţinut, tot de la Mondialele de la Roma, din 2009, de germanul Paul
    Biedermann. Totodată, timpul înregistrat a fost cu doar o sutime de secundă mai
    mare decât cu care Michael Phelps, idolul lui David, câştiga titlul olimpic la
    Beijing, în 2008.


    România a ocupat apoi locul patru în clasamentul pe națiuni al Mondialelor
    de natație pentru juniori de la Lima, din Peru, care au avut loc în septembrie.
    Delegația română s-a întors cu patru medalii de aur, două de argint și două de
    bronz. David Popovici a urcat de trei ori pe cea mai înaltă treaptă a
    podiumului, și anume la 100 de metri liber, la 200 și cu ștafeta masculină de 4
    x 100 de metri liber. Cu ştafeta mixtă de la 4 x 100 de metri liber, a câştigat
    medalia de argint. A patra medalie de aur a României a fost adusă de Bianca
    Costea, care s-a impus la 50 de metri liber.


    Anul s-a terminat cu
    Mondialele de înot în bazin scurt de la Melbourne, din decembrie. Deşi nu se
    consideră un specialist al bazinului scurt, David Popovici a a câștigat medalia de argint la 200 de
    metri liber. La 100 de metri liber, a ocupat locul 4 și a realizat un nou
    record mondial de juniori.

Romania was represented by three athletes: David Popovici, in the freestyle speed competitions, in which he holds several world titles, Robert Glința, a former European champion in the 100 meter backstroke event, and Andrei Anghel, one of the most promising swimmers of the young generation. Popovici had the best performance, winning the silver medal in the 200 meter freestyle, which is why Radio Romania International designated him the Athlete of the Week.



    In Melbourne, David Popovicis stated goal was to qualify for a final. In the 400 meter freestyle competition, he did not pass the heats. He made up for it in the 100m freestyle, where he qualified for the final, in which he finished 4th, setting a new junior world record. In the 200 meter freestyle he did even better. He finished second behind Koreas Sunwoo Hwang, who had an excellent day and set a new competition record.



    David Popovici was born in Bucharest, on September 15, 2004. He stood out in the junior competitions last year, when, at the European Championships in Rome, he won the 200m, 100m and 50m freestyle competitions, in the last one also setting a world junior record. He later broke world junior records in both the 100m and 200m freestyle events. He qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, where he ranked fourth in the 200m freestyle event at a difference of two hundredths of a second from the 3rd placed swimmer. In the senior competitions, he won his first major title in November 2021 when, in Kazan, Russia, he became the European champion in the 200m freestyle event. In June, at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest, he won the 100m and 200m freestyle competitions. At the European Championships in Rome, he broke the world record in the 100m freestyle event, and in the 200 meters he recorded the best time in a textile swimsuit in the history of the event. (LS)

    JHA – The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, expressed, on Thursday, her disappointment with last week’s vote in the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the EU, following which Romania and Bulgaria were not admitted to the Schengen Area. The European Union has proven, in time, that it can remove any barriers and bring people together – said Roberta Metsola in her speech at the beginning of the Brussels meeting of the European Council. She also stated that the Union could do this even now, if it had the courage to take political decisions to maintain the European construction. According to official sources, quoted by Radio Romania, President Klaus Iohannis thanked for the strong support of the European Parliament and the overwhelming majority of member states. On the sidelines of the Council, President Iohannis discussed with community leaders, to explain them the unfair situation in which Romania finds itself and the need to find a solution for admission to the Schengen Area.



    OECD – Romania submitted, on Thursday, at the Paris-based headquarters of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the initial memorandum regarding its accession to this structure. The document was handed to the Secretary General of the OECD, Mathias Cormann, by Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă, who is on a working visit to the French capital. Currently, the OECD has 38 member states, representing established democracies and consolidated economies. Together, the OECD member states provide about 70% of the global production and trade and 90% of the worlds foreign direct investments. The OECD facilitates the exchange of experience and good practices between countries and makes available to them its own data, analyzes and expertise regarding the establishment of public policies.



    Protests – The Federation of Free Trade Unions in Romanian Education continues its protest actions started last week. The employees are dissatisfied with the authorities failure to grant the pay increase for working conditions and overtime. At the same time, they are asking for the index-linking of salaries to cover the inflation rate. On Thursday, the education trade unionists protested in front of the prefects offices in several cities of the country, including Galati (southeast) and Vaslui (east). On the other hand, in Bucharest, policemen and penitentiary workers took to the streets in front of the Finance Ministry. They request the full payment of outstanding salary differences, the updating of food and equipment standards, as well as the indexation of military pensions and salaries.



    Swimming – The Romanian swimmer David Popovici ranked fourth, on Thursday, with a time of 45 sec and 64/100, in the 100 m freestyle final of the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Melbourne. Popovici, the world champion in the Olympic pool event, was only seven hundredths of a second away from the bronze medal, but he set a new junior world record, breaking the one set on Wednesday, in the semi-finals (45 sec and 91/100). He will also participate, in Melbourne, in the 200m freestyle, after failing to pass the heats in the 400m freestyle. Also on Thursday and also in Melbourne, another Romanian, Andrei Anghel, qualified for the semifinals of the 50m backstroke event, after being recorded with the seventh time of the series, 23 sec and 12/100. Romania is represented by three swimmers at the World Championships in Australia.



    Energy – The leadership of the National Energy Regulatory Authority met, on Thursday, with the representatives of the electricity suppliers in Romania, to explain them how the new price cap law is applied. The law will enter into force on January 1 next year. The suppliers claim that almost 9 million Romanians should submit applications to benefit from capped tariffs, while the Authority says that the number is much lower. The institution points out that each customer can automatically benefit, without any other formalities, from the capping of bills for one single household, if they do not exceed the consumption levels provided by law.     4th in the 100m freestyle final with 45.64, a new world junior record.
    First came the Australian athlete Kyle Chalmers. David Popovici is the
    defending 100m freestyle world champion and holder of the world record in this
    event.




    In men’s basketball, on Wednesday in Riga, Latvia, the
    Romanian side U-BT Cluj-Napoca was defeated by the Ukrainian team Prometey
    Slobozhanske 105-82, in the EuroCup Group A. After 8 games, the Romanian
    champions are ranking 8th, with 6 points. In the FIBA Europe Cup,
    CSM Oradea beat the German side Bamberg on home turf, 82 – 80, in the first
    match in Group L. In Group I of the same competition, SCM Craiova was defeated
    at home by FC Porto, 83-73. Also worth noting is that the women’s team Baschet
    Club Arad ended its participation in the EuroCup with a defeat. The Romanian
    team was defeated in Poland by Arka Gdynia 87-53 and ranked last in the group D
    of the competition.




    Arcada Galaţi qualified in the play-offs of the CEV Cup
    in men’s volleyball, after beating the Finnish side Savo Volley Kuopio 3-1, on
    Wednesday at home, in the second leg of the round of 16. The Romanian champions
    had already won in Finland, 3-1. In the play-off, Arcada will be facing the
    Italian side Piacenza, which in the round of 16 defeated Fenerbahce Istanbul, 3-1
    in both legs.




    In women’s volleyball, on Wednesday, in the first leg
    of the round of 32 of the CEV Cup, CSO Voluntari lost in Poland to Budowlani
    Lodz, 3-0. In the Challenge Cup, also in the round of 32, the first leg, CSM Lugoj lost a dramatic match away from
    home to PTT Ankara, 3-2.




    On Wednesday, in a game counting towards round 20 of
    the Romanian football SuperLeague, Rapid București beat Petrolul Ploiești on
    the National Arena in Bucharest, 3-1. Two of Rapid’s goals were scored by the
    Croatian player Marko Duganzic, and one by Ștefan Pănoiu, in overtime. Gheorghe
    Grozav scored for the Ploiesti side. Top of the ranking at present is Farul

    Trecem la baschet masculin.

    A.     După opt jocuri disputate, campioana României ocupă locul 8 în clasament, cu

    tot în 16-imi de finală, manșa întâi,

    pentru etapa a 20-a a Superligii române de fotbal, Rapid București a trecut, pe
    Arena Națională din Capitală, de Petrolul Ploiești cu 3 la 1.     Golurile
    feroviarilor au fost marcate de croatul
    Marko Duganzic, în minutul 9, din penalty, apoi în minutul 73, și de Ștefan
    Pănoiu, în primul minut de prelungiri. Pentru ploieșteni a înscris, în minutul
    61, Gheorghe Grozav. Joi, tot pe Arena Națională, FCSB – CFR Cluj, restanță din
    etapa a noua. În clasament conduce Farul Constanța, cu 44 de puncte. Urmează
    CFR, cu 41. De vineri până marți se desfașoară jocurile etapei cu numărul 21,
    ultima din acest an.
