    Romania obtained two silver medals at the European Table Tennis Championships, which ended in Linz, Austria on Sunday.

    Both medals were won by Bernadette Szocs in the women’s singles and doubles. In the doubles, the Romanian and Austrian Sofia Polcanova were outperformed by the Czechoslovakian pair Hana Matelova / Barbora Balazova 3-2.

    In the singles finals, the Romanian player lost to her colleague in the doubles, Sofia Polcanova, who won the match 4-1.

    Corona Braşov has qualified for the third round of the Ice Hockey Continental Cup after a 6-3 win against the Lithuanian side Energija Elektrenai.

    The game took place on the Olympic Skate Rink in Brasov, which hosted the Group D matches in the competition’s second round.

CSM ranks fourth in the group while Gloria comes 7th. At the end of the group stage, the first two sides in the group will go into the quarter finals.

    The sides ranking third, fourth, fifth and sixth are playing tie matches to reach the quarterfinals whereas the sides ranking 7th and 8th are leaving the competition.

    FCSB on Sunday won the historical derby of the Romanian football when they outperformed Dinamo Bucharest 2-0, in the Superleague’s 13th leg.

    On Friday, Universitatea Cluj clinched a 2-0 home win against Oţelul Galaţi, while in Buzau, southern Romania, local side, Gloria, obtained a 3-0 win against Hermannstadt. On Saturday in Sfântu Gheorghe, central Romania, local side Sepsi secured a 1-0 win against UTA, and the game in Ploieşti, southern Romania, pitching Petrolul against CFR Cluj ended in a goaless draw. Also in a goaless draw ended the game in Craiova, between the local side Universitatea and FC Botoşani.

    Monday will see the leg’s last games, Poli Iaşi versus Unirea Slobozia and Rapid Bucharest versus Farul Constanţa. Universitatea Cluj tops the ranking with 26 points followed by Universitatea Craiova with 21.

    Romania participated with six athletes in the Paralympic Games that ended in Paris on Sunday. These are Alexandru Bologa and Daniel Vargoczki in judo contests for the visually impaired, Eduard Novak and Theodor Matican in cycling races Camelia Ciripan and Bobi Simion in table tennis. Bologa became gold medalist in the 73 kilogram category and Ciripan walked away with silver from the individual contest. Thanks to their results, Romania came 63rd in the nations ranking, which was dominated by China.

    We continue with handball as the women’s competition of the Champions League has just kicked off.

    Two Romanian sides met in Group A on Saturday, and Gloria Bistrita secured a 30-26 home win against CSM Bucharest. The best players of the Transylvanian side were the Russian Valeria Kirdiiasheva, the Spanish Seynabou Mbengue Rodriguez, and Asuka Fujita of Japan, with six goals each. Elizabeth Omoregie scored most of the goals for the Bucharest side.

    The other Romanian side in the competition, Rapid Bucharest, secured a 32-27 home win against Buducnost Podgorica of Montenegro in a match counting towards Group B. Serbian player Anđela Janjušević was Rapid’s best player with 8 goals scored. In the other Group B games held on Saturday, the Hungarian side Győr clinched a 28-26 win against the Danish from Esbjerg, while the French squad Brest Bretagne outperformed the Norwegians from Vipers Kristiansand 30-27. On Sunday, Odense defeated in Denmark the Germans from Ludwigsburg, 28-22. Rapid will next be up against Vipers Kristiansand in an away match on September 14.

    Romania’s new rugby champions are SCM USV Timişoara, which secured a 22-21 win in Bucharest on Sunday against CSM Ştiinţa Baia Mare in the finals of the National League. The champions won through a try and five penalty shots.

    In the match for the third position Steaua secured a 36-30 win against archrivals Dinamo. This is the sixth national title Timişoara has won so far.

    player, Romanian Simona Halep, on Monday qualified for the quarter finals of
    the Australian Open after a 6-4, 6-4 win against Elise Mertens of Belgium. The performance
    has brought Halep, a Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion, 525,000 AUD and
    430 WTA points. The Romanian will be up against Anett Kontaveit of Estonia in
    the quarter-finals.

    on Sunday won the women’s individual epee contest in the Doha Grand Prix. The
    Romanian secured a 15-9 win against Mara Navarria of Italy in the finals. We
    recall that Popescu’s prize closet also includes a World Cup, which she won in
    Tallinn in November last year and came in second at the World Cup in Havana on
    January 10th. Ana-Maria tops the World Cup ranking and is very close
    to qualification for the Tokyo Olympics.

    ROMANIAN ACADEMY – Historian Ioan-Aurel Pop, the rector of the ”Babeş-Bolyai” University in Cluj-Napoca (north-western Romania) on Thursday was elected president of the Romanian Academy. He received 86 of the 148 votes that were cast during the General Assembly of the Romanian Academy. The newly elected president, who will have a four-year term in office, will take over the position 15 days since his election. The elections for four positions of vice-president and one of secretary general will be held on April 20. The former president of the Romanian Academy, Ionel Valentin Vlad, passed away in December 2017.



    SECURITY MEASURES – Over 50,000 employees of the Romanian Interior Ministry have been mobilised to maintain public order, safety and security across the country at Easter. Gendarme and police troops will be chiefly deployed around churches and other religious institutions. 250 thousand people are expected to attend more than 700 public events that will take place in Romania in the next four days. Traffic police, equipped with more than 300 traffic radars and backed by helicopters, will be monitoring traffic on Romanias motorways at Easter.



    MARCH – The “Eudoxiu Hurmuzachi Institute for the Romanians abroad, an institution subordinated to the Ministry for the Romanians Abroad jointly with the Lauder-Reut Educational Complex will be staging a March of Holocaust survivors – “Lets learn together, in Poland, over April 9-13. The event, which has an educational character and is aimed at teaching students a dramatic episode in history, involves the participation of young people from 52 countries. The Romanian delegation includes students from Romania and the Republic of Moldova. The project is part of the IEH “The Romanian Identity Caravan, which includes a series of cultural events destined to promote Romanian culture and to consolidate Romanian national identity, and is part of the Strategic Programme – “The Romanian Common Cultural Area – the Great Union Centennial 1918 – 2018.



    HEALTHCARE – Romanian health minister, Sorina Pintea, on Thursday said a revision of the legislation on the purchase of medicines is needed, in order to make sure that suppliers who take part in tenders provide the necessary amount of pharmaceutical products throughout the duration of the contract. She also said that the line authorities are permanently monitoring the stocks and the consumption level of pharmaceutical products in order to intervene urgently and legally, so that the necessary amount of medicines be provided to patients. The statements were made after last month, the relevant minister requested a report with centralised data as to the lack of medicines or to discontinuities in the process of supplying with medicines hospitals and medical centres included in the national oncology program.



    SKRIPAL CASE – The US diplomats who have been declared persona-non grata by Russia, in retaliation for the expulsion of 60 Russian diplomats by the US, in the wake of the Skripal scandal, on Thursday left the US Embassy in Moscow, on the last day set by the Kremlin for them to leave the Russian soil. Serghei Skripal, a former Russian double agent who was living in the UK and his daughter, Yulia, were poisoned with a nerve agent in Salisbury, south-western England on March 4. London has openly accused Russia of involvement in the case and has announced the expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats from British soil, a decision which was followed by similar measures taken by the US and over 20 other countries, with a total of 150 Russian diplomats being sent home. In late March, Russia, which denies any involvement, took a retaliatory measure, by expelling 60 US diplomats, closing down the US Consulate in Saint Petersburg and calling on London to reduce the number of its embassy and consular staff in Russia.



    HANDBALL – The Romanian womens handball team CSM Bucharest on Friday will meet on home soil the French team Metz, in the first round of the Champions League quarter finals. In the three other matches, the defending champion, Gyor of Hungary will meet Buducnost Podgorica of Montenegro, FC Midtjylland of Denmark will face Vardar Skopje of Macedonia, and Ferencvaros Budapest of Hungary will take on Rostov- Don of Russia.     Académie – Avec 86 voix sur un total de 148 exprimées, l’historien Ioan- Aurel Pop, recteur de l’Université Babes- Bolyai de Cluj- Napoca, a été élu jeudi à la tête de l’Académie roumaine pour un mandat de 4 ans. Il remplace Ionel Valentin Vlad, décédé en décembre dernier. Le 20 avril, ce sera le tour des 4 vice présidents et du secrétaire général de l’Académie roumaine d’être désignés par vote.


    Santé – La loi sur les médicaments devrait changer afin de contraindre les distributeurs participant aux appels d’offre d’assurer le nécessaire de produits pharmaceutiques pendant toute la durée du contrat. C’est ce qu’a déclaré jeudi le ministre de la Santé, Mme Sorina Pintea. Et elle d’ajouter que les responsables du Ministère surveillent de près les stocks en médicaments afin de pouvoir intervenir, si besoin, en toute urgence, tout en respectant les procédures légales. Les déclarations interviennent après que Mme la ministre eut demandé en mars à connaître la situation générale de tous les médicaments susceptibles de manquer des établissements sanitaires de Roumanie, principalement des hôpitaux où se déroule le programme national d’oncologie.

    Handball – Le club champion de Roumanie de handball féminin, le club CSM Bucarest, rencontrera vendredi, à domicile, les Françaises de Metz lors d’un match figurant dans les quarts de finale de la Ligue des Champions.     Météo – En Roumanie, après une journée très chaude, les températures baisseront pour atteindre les normales saisonnières.
