    The True Velo friends at Velo City 2017

    Velo City has been rated as the largest world-level conference focusing on cycling. This year, Velo City is hosted by the Netherlands, over June 13 and 16. Two Romanians will be among those who will be tackling the problems faced by cyclers in their communities. They are the president of the Romanian Cyclists’ Federation Radu Mititean and the Federation’s president Mihai Deneş. The latter will attend the aforementioned conference also in his capacity as representative of the True VeloFriends. When and how the community of the True VeloFriends came into being? Mihai Denes told us.



    “Six years ago, my colleague Iulian Ene set up a group out of the sheer wish to offer cyclists in Bucharest a proper framework for them to cycle around the city. Then, two years ago we set up an association, True VeloFriends, so that we could negotiate with the authorities on an equal footing. We’ve mounted over 500 cyclo-tourism races so far and pedaled more than 30 million kilometers with more than 15,000 members in Bucharest. Now the group has 9,000 members and together we have done great things for the world of cycling.”



    We asked Mihai Denes when they actually decided to be part of that great event, Velo City, for which more than 250 speakers from 40 countries have registered. Also, we wanted to find out what changes they hoped the event would bring about, if not on paper, at least in people’s perception.



    “In February 2017 we saw a call of the Dutch Cycling Federation encouraging people from developing countries to participate there. We wrote a project and we thus succeeded to win a grant worth 1,000 euros that enabled us to partially cover the expenses for that conference. We’re determined to create new contacts with the attending associations, to conclude new partnerships so that we may develop such a cycling trend in Romania as well.”



    Here is the representative of the true VeloFriends Mihai Denes once again, this time speaking about what the talks agenda includes at the 2017 edition of the Velo City conference.



    “The main point is infrastructure. As you may know, cycling infrastructure is almost inexistent in Romania. We’re nearly 50 years behind Western countries where the authorities took measures to curb the rate of accidents through the construction of infrastructure for cyclists. The lack of infrastructure means fewer cyclists in urban areas. We believe that there would be many more if the infrastructure were adequate. A second point is the issue of cyclists, of people. People are different, and adopt cheap means of transportation. Cycling is very cheap and doesnt pollute, and is suitable for big cities. Another important theme will be urban planning, the city, and generally big cities have to have road planning and an infrastructure for bicycles. Last but not least it’s the so-called cycling advocacy, in which associations such as ours put pressure on the authorities for them to introduce bike lanes at local and national level and issue clear regulations for cyclists, so they can ride freely, without impeding traffic or being impeded by traffic.”



    Bike tourism and cycling have earned Europe 513 billion Euros in the last few years, as a result of developing infrastructure. One major announcement is that this years edition of Velo City will be opened by the king of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander. Velo City was hosted in previous years by major cities across the world: Copenhagen, Brussels, Barcelona, Taipei, to name just a few. We are nearing the 200th anniversary of the invention of the so-called running machine invented by German baron Karl Drais, the first bicycle. (Translated by E. Nasta)

    Adevăraţii Velo Prieteni la Velo City 2017

    Considerată a fi cea mai
    mare conferinţă pe teme
    de ciclism la nivel mondial, Velo City ajunge anul acesta în Olanda, între
    13 şi 16 iunie.


    Printre cei ce vor
    vorbi despre problemele
    cu care se confruntă cetăţenii iubitori ai mersului pe două roţi din comunităţile pe
    care le reprezintă, se vor afla şi doi români: preşedintele Federaţiei Bicicliştilor
    din România, Radu Mititean şi vicepreşedintele federaţiei, Mihai Deneş, care se
    va afla acolo şi în calitate de reprezentant al Adevăraţilor
    VeloPrieteni.


    Când şi cum a
    apărut această comunitate a Adevăraţilor Velo Prieteni, ne povesteşte Mihai
    Deneş: Acum 6 ani, colegul meu Iulian Ene a
    înfiinţat un grup din dorinţa de a oferi bicicliştilor din Bucureşti un cadru
    organizat de a se plimba prin oraş. Apoi, acum 2 ani am infiinţat o asociaţie,
    asociaţia Adevăratii Velo Prieteni, pentru a putea negocia de la egalitate cu
    autorităţile. Am organizat peste 500 de ture de cicloturism până acum şi am
    pedalat peste 30 de milioane de km impreună cu peste 15.000 de membri in
    Bucureşti. Acum grupul are 9000 de membri şi împreună facem lucruri minunate
    pentru lumea bicicletei.


    L-am întrebat pe
    Mihai Deneş când s-au hotărât să fie parte a acestui mare eveniment, Velo
    City, unde sunt deja înscrişi peste 250
    de speakeri din 40 de ţări şi ce schimbări speră să aducă, dacă nu pe hârtie,
    măcar în conştiinţa oamenilor: În februarie 2017 am văzut un
    call al Federaţiei Olandeze de Ciclism
    prin care se încuraja faptul ca persoane din ţările în curs de dezvoltare în
    domeniul bicicletelor să participe acolo. Am scris un proiect şi am reuşit în
    acest fel să câştigăm o bursă de 1000 de euro prin care am putut să ne decontăm
    o parte din cheltuielile acestei conferinţe. Ne ducem acolo cu gândul de a crea
    noi contacte cu asociaţiile prezente, de a încheia noi parteneriate pentru a
    putea dezvolta şi în România acest curent biciclistic.


    Despre ce se va
    discuta în cadrul conferinţei Velo City 2017, ne spune acelaşi Mihai Deneş,
    reprezentant al Adevăraţilor VeloPrieteni: Infrastructura. După cum bine
    ştiţi, în România infrastructura este aproape inexistentă pentru biciclete. Ne
    aflăm la un decalaj de peste 50 de ani faţă de ţările din vest unde
    autorităţile au luat măsuri pentru a limita accidentele prin construirea de
    infrastructură dedicată bicicliştilor. Lipsa infrastructurii determină un număr
    redus de biciclişti în mediul urban, considerăm că am fi foarte mulţi
    biciclişti în mediul urban dacă am avea o infrastructură adecvată. A doua temă
    este exact problematica biciclistului, problematica oamenilor. Oamenii sunt
    diferiţi şi adoptă metode ieftine de a se deplasa. Mersul cu bicicleta este un
    mijloc de deplasare foarte ieftin şi nepoluant propice pentru marile aglomerţii
    urbane. Altă temă importantă va fi planificarea urbană, oraşul şi în general
    marile aglomeraţii urbane trebuie să fie planificate în zona rutieră şi cu
    infrastuctură de biciclete. Şi ultima şi cea mai importantă, ar fi partea de
    cycling advocay, în felul acesta, noi ca asociaţii să punem presiune asupra
    autorităţilor ca acestea să reglementeze la nivel central şi la nivel local
    marcarea traseelor de cicloturism şi reguli clare pentru biciclişti în aşa fel
    încât aceştia să poată să meargă în libertate fără a încurca traficul şi fără a
    fi încurcaţi de către maşini.

    Cicloturismul şi mersul pe bicicletă
    au adus în anii trecuţi venituri de peste 513 miliarde de euro în Europa în
    urma dezvoltării infrastructurii pe traseele euro-velo. Un amănunt
    deloc de neglijat este faptul ca ediţia de anul
    acesta va fi deschisă de Regele Olandei, Majestatea Sa Willem – Alexander. Velo City a fost găzduit de-a lungul ediţiilor anterioare, de oraşe din
    întreaga
    lume: Copenhaga, Bruxelles, Barcelona şi Taipei, sunt doar câteva
    dintre ele. Dar iată că pas cu pas, kilometru cu kilometru, zilele acestea se
    împlinesc 200 de ani de când Baronul
    german Karl Drais a inventat maşina de alergat adică, prima bicicletă.
