    Athlete of the Week on RRI: Tennis player Simona Halep

    Romanian tennis
    player Simona Halep on Monday announced she would not be competing in the WTA
    tournament in New Haven, the United States. Her withdrawal comes as she sustained
    a minor ankle injury in her right foot. Halep was seeded first at New Haven and
    was supposed to compete straight into the round of 16. New Haven is the last
    tournament before the last grand slam tournament of the year, the US Open, due
    to kick off next week in New York.


    Simona Halep
    holds on to the top position in WTA standings, now enjoying a wider lead over
    the runner up, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, over 2,000 points. After winning
    the Rogers Cup in Montreal on August 12, Simona Halep last week reached the
    final of the tournament in Cincinnati, the United States. She lost the match to
    Kiki Bertens at the end of a very difficult game. For her good run last week,
    we have designated Simona Halep Athlete of the Week on Radio Romania
    International.


    The final in
    Cincinnati was the 33rd of Simona Halep’s career. So far the
    Romanian tennis player has won 18 WTA tournaments, six of which in 2013 alone,
    Nurnberg, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Budapest, New Haven, Moscow and Sofia. Then she won
    the Doha and BRD Open trophies in 2014. In 2015 she prevailed in Shenzhen,
    Dubai and Indian Wells. In 2016 she won the title in Madrid, Bucharest and
    Montreal. In 2017 she defended her trophy in Madrid and this year she won the
    Shenzhen, Roland Garros and Montreal tournaments.

    Halep played
    another 15 finals, in 2010 and 2011 in Fez, Morocco, in 2012 in Brussels, then
    in 2014 in Madrid, Roland Garros and Singapore. In 2015 Simona lost the Toronto
    and Cincinnati finals, while in 2017 she lost the finals in Rome, Roland
    Garros, Cincinnati and Beijing. This year Halep reached the finals of the
    Australian Open, and the tournaments in Rome and Cincinnati. Let us note that
    this year Simona Halep also won the women’s doubles in Shenzhen alongside Irina
    Begu. In 2016 she lost the doubles final played in Montreal alongside Monica
    Niculescu.

    INFLATION – The National Bank of Romania has revised down to 3.5% the inflation rate forecast for the end of this year, the Central Bank Governor Mugur Isarescu has announced today. The previous forecast was 3.6% for 2018. As regards the end of next year, the Central Bank estimates a 2.7% inflation rate. Mugur Isarescu has recently stated that the Central Bank has managed to guide inflation towards a downward trend, but it cannot be stated that the increase cycle of the key interest rate is complete.



    CUSTOMS – The Romanian Customs Authority and the Customs Service of the Republic of Moldova on Tuesday signed in Albita, eastern Romania, a joint action plan aimed to render cross border traffic in August more fluid. This time of the year usually sees a 20% increase in traffic across the border between Romania and Moldova. To this end, the two countries customs authorities will upsize the customs staff and will ensure a permanent exchange of information.



    CONGRESS – The city of Alba Iulia, in central Romania, is these days hosting a congress of teachers from Romania and abroad. Hundreds of educators, teachers and professors from Romania, the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Serbia are participating in the event. This edition of the congress, the 41st, is devoted to the celebration of 100 years since the Great Union, which took place in Alba Iulia. One of the topics approached at the congress is teachers role in the unification of the Romanian principalities. The agenda includes a large number of courses and workshops.



    SWINE FEVER – The Romanian Agriculture Minister Petre Daea has stated that the order regarding the African swine fever does not say that crops must be destroyed or burnt, except for those plots where an outbreak of fever in wild boars was found, and only if that plot is part of a crop, but no such situation has been reported in Romania so far. According to the latest reports, there are some 580 outbreaks of African swine fever in 100 towns and villages in 8 counties across Romania. Some 78,000 pigs have been culled in farms and households. The owners of these animals will be compensated for their loses, and under the next budget adjustment additional funds have been earmarked for the eradication of the disease.



    AWARD – The only Romanian astronaut who has flied into space, Dumitru Prunariu, will receive the Science Award granted by the International Academy of Astronautics. This is the highest distinction awarded by this prestigious institution. The award ceremony will be hosted by Bremen, Germany, on September 30th, reads a release issued by the Secretary General of the International Academy of Astronautics, Jean-Michel Contant. We recall that on May 14th, 1981, Dumitru Prunariu became the first and only Romanian to have flown into space. He took part in the Soyuz 40 mission, under the “Intercosmos” space program, and spent 7 days, 20 hours and 42 minutes in space. The International Academy of Astronautics is an independent NGO, established in 1960, based in Paris. It was recognized by the UN in 1996. Its members, representing 85 countries, are prominent researchers, heads of space missions, astronauts and cosmonauts, heads of space agencies and other personalities from the world of space policy and diplomacy.



    ISS – The International Space Station will be crossing Bucharests skies every evening, until August 23rd. It can be seen without special equipment, but only for a few minutes. According to Adrian Sonca, a coordinator with the Bucharest Astronomic Observatory, the ISS appears on the sky as a bright object flying through the stars. NASA has a special service for those interested in finding out which is the exact interval during which the space station is visible to the naked eye.



    TENNIS – Several Romanian tennis players are playing tonight in the second round of the WTA tournament in Montreal, with 2.8 million dollars in prize money. Worlds no.1 Simona Halep, first seed at the tournament, which she has won before back in 2016, will play against the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, no.28 WTA. Mihaela Buzarnescu will take on the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, and Sorana Cirstea will play against Venus Williams. In the doubles, Mihaela Buzarnescu and Monica Niculescu will be playing against the pair made up of Shuko Aoyama of Japan and Lidzya Marozava of Belarus. On Tuesday, the Romanian player Ana Bogdan was eliminated by the Byelorussian Aryna Sabalenka and had to leave Rogers Cup from the very inaugural round. Another Romanian, Irina-Camelia Begu, was eliminated in the first round by the Australian Ashleigh Barty.

    INVESTIGATION – Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Romania Bogdan Olteanu, currently under home arrest for 30 days in a case where he is accused of influence peddling, has announced he would step down on Monday. Olteanu was arrested on Thursday, prosecutors calling for his pre-trial arrest. Anticorruption prosecutors are accusing Olteanu of demanding and receiving 1 million euros and support for his election campaign from a businessman in exchange for appointing Liviu Mihaiu as the governor of the Danube Delta, during his time as Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. This is the first National Bank official to be investigated by the National Anticorruption Directorate. In a press release, the Central Bank said the investigation is focused on Bogdan Olteanus political career before he became Deputy Governor in 2009.



    SURVEY – Over 40% of Romanians believe immigration and terrorism are the main challenges facing the EU, reads a recent Eurobarometer published by the European Commission in July. Over 31,000 people from 34 European countries and regions took part in this survey over May 21-31, 2016. In Romania, 42% of respondents depicted a positive image of the EU, down by 15% as compared to the previous survey, while 14% of them said they had a negative image of the EU, up by 5%. At national level, Romanians concerns are related to the healthcare and social security schemes, with 37% of the answers, unemployment 25% and inflation 24%.



    MILITARY EXERCISE – Over 2,700 military from five NATO member states – Bulgaria, Canada, Poland, Romania and USA – and five members of the Peace Partnership – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are starting today and until August 5 taking part in a large-scale military exercise in Cincu, central Romania. Organized by the General Staff of Ground Forces, the exercise is aimed at training the military in compliance with NATO standards. Command, training, computer-assisted simulations, ground troops and tactical exercises will be organized. According to the Defense Ministry, over 900 Romanian military and some 1,700 US troops equipped with M1A2 Abrams tanks and Bradley armored fighting vehicles, and 47 Canadian military equipped with infantry combat vehicles, will be carrying out tactical shooting exercises.




    TURKEY – Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told a television that he would forward Parliament a minor constitutional reform, which, if adopted, will place the national intelligence service and the chiefs of general staff under the presidencys control. The measures are aimed at handling full control of the military to the civilian leadership after the failed coup of July, where one military faction used tanks, fighter jets and helicopters to overthrow the power. Recep Tayyip Erdogan said military academies will be shut down and replaced with a National Defense University. The Turkish presidents statement follows last weeks thorough-going reform of the military: nearly half of the generals have been dismissed. After July 15, some 18,700 people have been arrested. 140 newspapers, radio and television stations were shut down.



    TENNIS – Romanian tennis player the worlds no. 5 Simona Halep is today playing Madison Keys of USA in the final of the Montreal tournament in Canada, totaling 2.4 million dollars in prize money. On Saturday, Halep knocked out Angelique Kerber of Germany, ranked 2nd in WTA standings. In addition, Simona Halep and Monica Niculescu of Romania will also play in the doubles final. The two will take on Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Venina of Russia. This is the first time Halep has made it to both finals in the WTA system.
