CYBERCRIME Two crime rings specialized in IT crimes and money laundering have been dismantled in a joint operation involving the Romanian prosecutors from the Direction of Fighting Organised Crime and Terrorism, DIICOT, and the legal authorities in the United States of America. A specialized network made up of Romanian and Bulgarian citizens was set up in California in 2021. By means of sophisticated equipment, the network used to copy data from cards belonging to US citizens, which they used to extract cash. The total damage caused stood at over one million dollars and part of the money went to Romania by means of money transfer systems or among the goods transported by couriers. In Romania, members of a second group, specialized in money laundering, took over the money investing it. Tens of thousands Euros and dollars have been identified and seized during various search operations conducted in Romania.

FILM ‘The New Year that Never Came’ directed, written and produced by Romanian film director Bogdan Muresanu has been awarded two prizes at the International Film Festival in Venice: the FIPRESCI award offered by the jury of the International Federation of Film Critics and Bisato d’Oro 2024 for the best script offered by independent film critics. ‘The film culminates with a profound exploration of human behavior influenced by the fear of political reprisals, shared by several generations who lived under a totalitarian regime. We appreciate this film for its focused political vision, the sophisticated and dynamic plot, the balanced tones and exceptional cast” – the FIPRESCI jury said. DoP Boroka Biro got the special mention for picture Premio Autrici under 40 ‘Valentina Pedicini’, an award which acknowledges the talent of a director under 40 years old for a remarkable performance in film direction, script or picture.

FOOTBALL Romania’s national football side secured a 3-0 win against Kosovo in Pristina on Friday night, the first game in their Nations League’s Group C2. In the same group, Cyprus clinched a one-nil win against Lithuania. These are the national side’s first matches with the former Romanian football legend and great coach, Mircea Lucescu, at the helm. Lucescu went back to the national side after 38 years. He also coached Romania’s national eleven between 1981 and 1986, when they qualified for the European Championships in France in 1984. At that time only eight European sides used to go to the final tournament. Under the guidance of Lucescu, numerous football clubs from Romania, Turkey and Ukraine won their national championships. Another side that he coached Galatasaray Istanbul claimed the UEFA Cup in the year 2000. At the age of 79 Lucescu is the oldest headcoach of a national football side.

SPORT Romania’s table tennis player Camelia Ciripan obtained bronze in the singles of the tennis competition of the summer Paralympics in Paris after losing to Marina Litovcenko 3-0, in the semifinals, the National Agency for Sport has announced. Camelia Ciripan, 45, who was designated athlete of the year 2022 in the Romanian Paralympic Sports, following the bronze medal she won at the world championships in Spain, was Romania’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Paris Paralympics. Her success comes a day after the gold medal obtained by Romanian judoka Florin-Alexandru Bologa who defeated Yergali Shamey of Kazakhstan in the finals. In the present edition of the Paralympics, Romania is being represented by Alexandru Bologa and Daniel Vargoczki in the judo contest, Eduard Novak and Theodor Matican in the cycling competition and also by table tennis players, Camelia Ciripan and Bobi Simion.

ELECTIONS In its meeting today, the government of Romania is to set the calendar for the presidential election scheduled this autumn, on November 24 and December 8. The ballot will be held in parallel with the parliamentary election, which will be organized on December 1. The campaign for the parliamentary election begins on November 1 and ends on November 30, in the morning. In the country, polling stations will be open between 7 am and 9 pm, while Romanians living abroad will be able to vote between 7 am on November 30 and 9 pm on December 1. This is the first time that all the 4 types of elections (local, parliamentary, presidential, and the election for the European Parliament) are held in Romania in the same year.

OECD Romania has today received a positive review in the competition sector as part of its OECD accession process. According to Romania’s Competition Council, the review was issued after an assessment that took place between 2018 and 2022. During the review, the Council had to demonstrate that its work meets the requirements of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Recommendations have also been made, and the stage of their implementation will be presented next year. Accession to the OECD is a priority for Romania, and is the country’s 3^rd strategic goal after the NATO and EU accession.

DEFICIT Romania’s budget deficit exceeds 4% of GDP after the first 7 months of the year, according to finance ministry data. In January – July, the government had total revenues of over EUR 66 bln, up 15% compared to the first 7 months of 2023. Budget expenditure however increased by over 23%, to more than EUR 80 bln. This year’s budget law is based on a 5% deficit level. Meanwhile, the minister for EU investments and projects Adrian Câciu announced that Romania has so far received EUR 23.84 bln under the cohesion policy in 2014-2020, reaching a 99.1% absorption rate.

INDEPENDENCE The Republic of Moldova Tuesday celebrated 33 years since the proclamation of its independence from the former Soviet Union. Attending the ceremonies, the presidents of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia signed a joint statement of support for the country’s EU accession. In his message on this occasion, president Klaus Iohannis promised Romania will continue to provide strategic support to Moldova in all areas. In turn, PM Marcel Ciolacu reassured his Moldovan counterpart, Dorin Recean, that Romania will remain in the front line of the efforts to consolidate Moldova’s EU accession efforts, its stability and democratic development.

WEATHER Thunderstorms were reported last night in several parts of the country. Weather experts have issued scores of extreme weather warnings. In Iaşi, in the north-east, the wind brought several trees down and damaged vehicles, while entire streets in the city were flooded. Also in the north-east, in Botoşani County, firefighters were called to put out a fire after lightning struck a tree. Tens of streets and basements were also flooded in Cluj-Napoca (north-west).

PARALYMPICS Paris is hosting tonight the opening ceremony for the Summer Paralympic Games, which will end on September 8. From Champs-Elysées to the world-famed Place de la Concorde, hundreds of dancers and performers will stage a show called “Paradox”, which according to the organisers is designed to make people think about their uniqueness. Romania is represented by 6 athletes at this year’s Paralympic Games, in 3 events: para judo (Alexandru Bologa and Daniel Vargoczki), para cycling (Eduard Novak and Theodor Matican) şi para table tennis (Camelia Ciripan and Bobi Simion). The first to compete are Camelia Ciripan and Bobi Simion, on Thursday afternoon, in the mixed doubles event, against the Japanese pair Yuri Tomono and Koyo Iwabuchi. (AMP)

Die Staats- und Regierungschefs der G7 beraten über die Lage in Afghanistan nach der Machtübernahme durch die Taliban und über die umfangreiche Operation zur Evakuierung von Zivilisten vom Flughafen Kabul. Das Treffen wurde vom Vereinigten Königreich einberufen, das den rotierenden G7-Vorsitz innehat, und findet virtuell statt. Die Europäer in der G7 drängen die USA, den Abzug des US-Militärs zu verzögern, das jetzt den Flughafen kontrolliert. Sie wollen möglichst viele Afghanen aus dem Land brungen, die unter dem früheren Regime bei den verbündeten Truppen oder internationalen Einrichtungen gearbeitet haben. Der britische Verteidigungsminister Ben Wallace sagte, dass die britischen Soldaten nicht in Afghanistan bleiben könnten, wenn die Amerikaner abziehen. Die Taliban haben gewarnt, dass jede Verzögerung des Rückzugs Konsequenzen haben wird. US-Präsident Joe Biden muss noch entscheiden, ob er die Frist für den Abzug der US-Truppen verlängert. Gemä‎ß der Vereinbarung mit den Taliban sollten sie Afghanistan bis zum 31. August verlassen.

Rumäniens Staatschef Klaus Iohannis hat für Mittwoch eine Sitzung des Obersten Verteidigungsrates des Landes einberufen. Auf der Tagesordnung stehen die Sicherheitslage in Afghanistan und ihre Auswirkungen auf Rumänien. Seit Beginn der Krise wurden insgesamt mehr als 45 rumänische Staatsbürger aus Afghanistan evakuiert. Klaus Iohannis erklärte kürzlich, dass die Behörden in Bukarest ihre Bemühungen fortsetzen werden, um afghanische Helfer des rumänischen Militärs in Afghanistan, Stipendiaten des rumänischen Staates oder Menschen in besonderen Notlagen auszufliegen.

Rumänien bemüht sich gemeinsam mit anderen Ländern, ihnen zu helfen, da der Zugang zum Flughafen von Kabul schwierig ist.

Die medizinischen Einrichtungen in Rumänien bereiten sich auf die vierte Welle des Coronavirus-Ausbruchs vor und stocken die Betten für Infizierte auf. Am Dienstag wurden neue Höchstzahlen bestätigt: 200 Intensivpatienten und 782 neue Fälle, so viele wie seit dem 14. Mai nicht mehr. Auch 14 Corona-Tote wurden gemeldet.

Die rumänischen Feuerwehrleute gehen in Griechenland in den Gebieten Kryftes und Vilia gegen Brände vor. Zuvor waren sie in Attika im Einsatz, um mögliche isolierte Ausbrüche zu überwachen, zu kontrollieren und zu beseitigen. Laut einer Erklärung der Generalinspektion für Notfallsituationen sind in den beiden Gebieten mehrere Fahrzeuge sowie eine Drohne im Einsatz. Vor zwei Wochen haben bereits über 100 rumänische Feuerwehrleute mit mehr als 20 Löschfahrzeugen in Griechenland Brände auf der Insel Evia nahe Athen bekämpft.

Im Rahmen des Internationalen Theaterfestivals von Sibiu hat am Montag eine Schauspielbörse geöffnet. Sie bietet allen Künstlern, Kulturschaffenden, Theaterhäusern und kulturellen Netzwerken die Möglichkeit, wichtige Produzenten aus der ganzen Welt zu treffen. Das Festival ist die grö‎ßte Kunstveranstaltung Rumäniens

Die rumänische Spielerin Ana Bogdan (Nr. 106 WTA) hat sich für das Achtelfinale des mit über 235.000 Dollar dotierten WTA-Turniers in Chicago qualifiziert, nachdem die Britin Heather Watson aus medizinischen Gründen beim Spielstand 6:2, 1:0 für die Rumänin aufgegeben hatte. Ana Bogdan spielt nun im Achtelfinale gegen die Russin Varvara Graceva, die auf Platz 88 der WTA-Rangliste steht. Eine weitere rumänische Spielerin, Sorana Cîrstea, die dritte Favoritin, unterlag in der ersten Runde gegen die Tschechin Tereza Martincova (26 WTA) mit 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In der japanischen Hauptstadt Tokio finden ab Dienstag die Paralympischen Spiele statt. Aus Rumänien nehmen sieben Athleten teil, darunter der Minister für Jugend und Sport, Eduard Novak, der im Fahrradsport antreten wird. Die anderen sechs Athleten werden in den Disziplinen Blindenjudo, Tischtennis, Radsport, Leichtathletik und Bogenschie‎ßen antreten.

Covid – 19 Romania — The number of new cases of Covid 19 continues to increase in Romania. On Friday the authorities reported 383 new cases out of over 32 thousand tests, this being for the 4th day in a row when the total number of daily cases exceeds 300. Most cases were registered in the capital. Three deaths were also reported. The number of people hospitalized continues to grow. There are now 786 patients in hospitals, of whom 102 are in ICUs. In the first week of August, 81% of the confirmed COVID-19 cases were registered among unvaccinated people, the National Public Health Institute announced. As regards vaccination, currently, there are almost 5 million Romanians who are fully vaccinated. On the other hand, Romania has updated the list of countries with an epidemiological risk. Turkey, Israel and the United States have entered the red list, which already includes Spain, Greece and the UK, the Romanian authorities have announced. Instead, the Netherlands, Malta, Kuwait and Panama were moved from the red list to the yellow one, given a drop in the number of cases there. Bulgaria remains in the green zone, according to the list that comes into force on August 15.

Certificate – From Friday August 13, only the digital certificates will be recognized when crossing EU state borders as proof that a person has been vaccinated against Covid-19, has received a negative test result or has recovered from the infection. The certificates contain a QR code guaranteeing the authenticity of vaccines and tests to prevent forgery. The obligation to present the digital certificates only applies to the countries that require documents such as proof of vaccination, testing or immunization resulting from recovery from infection, as well as to the return to Romania from yellow and red list countries. Travelers entering Romania from a green list country are not required to present the digital certificate or to isolate.

Brussels — NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Friday in Brussels, after a meeting of the NATO members’ ambassadors, that NATO would support the Kabul government “as much as possible” and “adjust” its diplomatic presence in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Western states are sending troops to evacuate embassy staff from the capital Kabul. A contingent of US forces already arrived in Afghanistan on Friday, where it will secure the evacuation of the US embassy staff. The United Kingdom has made a similar move, temporarily deploying some 600 troops to Afghanistan to support British citizens leaving the country. The Taliban insurgents consolidated control of Afghanistan on Friday, conquering the countrys second and third most important cities, Kandahar and Herat. In eight days, they have conquered almost half of Afghanistans provincial capitals and are now controlling most of the countrys north, west and south. The Taliban launched their offensive in May, with the start of the definitive withdrawal of US and NATO troops from Afghanistan, an operation that would end later this month.

MAE – Against the backdrop of the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, the Romania Foreign Ministry – MAE informs that the alert level for Afghanistan has been re-evaluated and raised, and urges the Romanian citizens to leave the territory of that state urgently. MAE warns that these security developments are associated with a major risk of terrorist attacks and armed clashes. MAE recalls that the activity of the Romanian Embassy in Kabul was suspended in 2019, following an attack that severely damaged the mission building. Given the lack of an operational mission in Kabul and the fact that the Romanian Embassy in Islamabad has taken over the countrys representation in relation to Afghanistan, the intervention capacity of that mission in Afghanistan is limited. MAE strongly recommends the Romanian citizens traveling to Afghanistan or who are already on the territory of this state to contact the Romanian Embassy in Islamabad. At the same time, Romanian citizens can request support from the diplomatic missions of the EU member states that are still operational in Kabul.

Investments – Direct foreign investments rose to 3.138 billion Euros in the first six months, as compared to 996 million Euros in the same period of 2020, according to data published on Friday by the National Bank of Romania. The number of newly established foreign capital companies in Romania increased in the same period by 53.7% as compared to the similar period of 2020, to 2,573 units, according to data centralized by the National Trade Register Office. On the other hand, in the first six months, the total external debt increased by almost 2.1 billion Euros. The current account deficit — namely the difference between imports and exports – increased by 73.4%, a little over 7 billion Euros — show central bank data.

Paralympics – Seven Romanian athletes are taking part in the Tokyo Paralympic Games held between 24th August and 5th September. They are competing in table tennis, judo, athletics, cycling and archery and their goal is to win three medals. Under the rules in place, the Paralympic athletes cannot be accompanied by medical staff or carers. Romania has four medals in the history of Paralympic Games: a bronze won by Alex Bologa in Rio in judo and three won by the current minister for sports Eduard Novak in cycling, namely gold in London and two silver in Beijing and London. Eduard Novak will also compete in the Tokyo Paralympics, where he is confident he can win a medal.

COVID — 19 world – The World Health Organization (WHO) does not support compulsory vaccination against COVID-19 in any country, although it defends the importance of immunization, WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told a news conference on Friday in response the fact that several countries are considering compulsory vaccination. According to her, vaccines are just one of the tools we have at our disposal to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. WHO experts have reiterated throughout the year that vaccines are not enough in the fight against the novel coronavirus and that they must be combined with health measures. To date, approximately 4.4 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered worldwide. In countries such as Spain, France, Canada, the United Kingdom or Germany, the percentage of fully vaccinated people is about 60% (as compared to 50% in the US), while in many low-income countries the percentage of fully vaccinated people is only 1%. On the other hand, about 206.5 million cases of infection with the new coronavirus have been reported so far worldwide, and more than 4.3 million people have died, according to worldometers.info. Covid-19 Romania. Romania moved

epidemiological risk which comes into effect in two days’ time. Spain, Greece
and the UK are already on this list. Following a drop in incidence rates, The
Netherlands, Malta, Kuwait and Panama were moved from the red to the yellow
list. Bulgaria stays on the green list. Romania reported 383
new infections from over 32,000 tests today, as well as 3 new deaths. According to the National Public Health
Institute, 81% of confirmed Covid cases in the first week of August were among
unvaccinated people. Almost 5 million people are fully vaccinated in Romania to
date.

Afghanistan. In Afghanistan, the Taliban made new advances in their
offensive against government forces, taking the country’s second biggest city,
Kandahar, as well as Herat, a key economic and cultural centre. Western powers,
who are pulling out completely from this country by the end of the month after
20 years of war, are taking measures to protect their citizens. The conquest of
Kandahar is a symbolic victory for the Taliban, owing to its location in the
south of the country, where they began their insurgency in 1990 and from where
they led the country for five years. From September last year, when the
negotiations with the Afghan government began, the insurgents have shown no
sign that they are willing to compromise. The US, the European Union, Russia,
China and other world powers have warned that they will not recognise a
government imposed in Afghanistan by use of military force.

Navy. Romanian Navy forces are holding an event on
Sunday in Constanţa’s military port to celebrate
Romanian Navy Day. For the second year in a row, the public will not have
access to this venue because of the epidemiological situation. Spectators will,
however, be able to watch the ceremony online or on tv. The guard of honour

Potatoes. Romania is the European Union’s
seventh biggest potato producer, according to figures published by Eurostat
today. The top producers are Germany, Poland, France, the Netherlands, Belgium
and Denmark. According to Eurostat, 55.3 million tonnes of potatoes were
harvested in the EU last year, 2.68 million of which in Romania. Six countries,
namely Germany, Poland, France, Romania, The Netherlands and Belgium, account
for almost three quarters of the total surface area cultivated with potatoes in
the EU last year.

Paralympics. Seven Romanian athletes are taking part
in the Tokyo Paralympic Games held between 24th August and 5th
September. They are competing in table tennis, judo, athletics, cycling and
archery and their goal is to win three medals. Under the rules in place, the

alongside Norway and two sides from Asia at the 2021 World Championship hosted
by Spain, following a draw on Thursday night in Castellon. Norway are defending
European champions and the bronze medallists at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Asia
will have six sides at the World Championship, to be decided at the Asian
Championship taking place in Jordan between the 15th and the 25th
of September. Romania are the only side to have taken part in every edition of
the Women’s World Championship, winning the title in 1962, silver in 1973 and
bronze in 2015. At the latest edition hosted by Japan in 2019, they finished in

Basketball spielen… einmal anders!

Rollstuhlbasketball ist eine Sportart für Behinderte und Disziplin der Paralympics. Neben Menschen mit körperlicher Behinderung dürfen auch Nichtbehinderte mitspielen. Die Regeln sind an die des klassischen Basketballs angelehnt und in einigen Punkten an die Anforderungen des Rollstuhlgebrauchs angepasst. In unserer Reihe Rumänien einmal anders“ berichten wir über ein Basketballspiel zwischen Behinderten und Nichtbehinderten, das auf die Situation der Behinderten in Rumänien aufmerksam machen sollte.

Ende Oktober traten Rollstuhlbasketballspieler von der Stiftung Motivation und bekannte rumänische Blogger bei einem gemischten Basketballspiel in einem Bukarester Einkaufszentrum gegeneinander an. Neben dem sportlichen Charakter der Veranstaltung (übrigens, es war ein starkes Spiel, bei dem die erfahrenen Rollstuhlsportler ihren Gegnern klar überlegen waren) sollte die Begegnung auch dazu dienen, auf die verschiedenen Diskriminierungsformen aufmerksam zu machen, mit denen die Behinderten konfrontiert werden. Projektkoordinator Adrian Szelmenczi erzählt, wie er auf die Idee dieses gemischten Spiels gekommen ist:

Die Idee zu diesem Spiel war relativ einfach. Es reicht schon, einen kurzen Spaziergang durch Bukarest zu machen — man merkt sofort, dass die Behinderten kaum Zugang zu einem normalen Leben in der Gesellschaft haben. Ich meine damit die einfachsten Alltagssituationen, wie das Fahren mit dem Rollstuhl über eine hohe Bordsteinkante, wenn man über die Stra‎ße muss, oder das Benutzen eines öffentlichen Verkehrsmittels in Bukarest, sei es ein Bus oder eine Stra‎ßenbahn. Bei der U-Bahn sieht die Lage etwas besser aus, aber die Busse und Stra‎ßenbahnen lassen noch viel zu wünschen übrig. Dazu kommen noch die vielen geparkten Autos auf dem Bürgersteig, die den Rollstuhlfahrern viele Probleme bereiten, weil sie einfach nicht durchkommen können. Daraus schlussfolgerten wir, dass die Bukarester Stadtverwaltung sich nicht genug darum kümmert, die Stadt zugänglicher zu machen. Es geht dabei nicht nur um Rollstuhlfahrer, sondern auch um Mütter, die mit ihren Kindern im Kinderwagen unterwegs sind, oder um Senioren, die eine Gehhilfe benutzen. Deshalb betrachten wir dieses Spiel als eine gute Gelegenheit, auf die Existenz der Behinderten in unserer Stadt aufmerksam zu machen. Es gibt sie ja, auch wenn man sie meistens nicht wahrnimmt, auch wenn sie sich oft gezwungen sehen, zu Hause zu bleiben.“

Der 24-jährige Soziologiestudent und Rollstuhlfahrer Andrei Bratu sagte uns, warum er an dieser Aktion teilgenommen hat:

Die Organisation Active Watch und die Stiftung Motivation hatten die Initiative für dieses Freundschafts-Basketballspiel — wir sollten einfach aus der Wohnung heraus. Das ist für uns leichter gesagt als getan, weil die rumänische Hauptstadt Bukarest nicht besonders rollstuhlfahrerfreundlich ist. Wir tun halt, was wir können. Basketball spiele ich seit 2012 — ich habe es in einem Sommerlager in Bran zum ersten Mal probiert, es hat mit gut gefallen, und ich dachte mir, dass ich auch in Bukarest weitermachen sollte. Inzwischen ist Basketballspielen mein Hobby geworden.“

Andrei fährt mit seinem Privatwagen zur Uni und studiert in einem Gebäude, das mit einem Aufzug versehen ist. Infolge eines ärztlichen Fehlers wurde Andrei schon als Kind an den Rollstuhl gefesselt. Am komischen Verhalten der Nichtbehinderten gegenüber Behinderten hat er sich inzwischen gewöhnt. Sein Vorschlag wäre, dass alle Leute mal öfter aus der Wohnung herausgehen und mehr Sport treiben sollten.

Die Sportler von der Stiftung Motivation spielen seit langer Zeit Basketball und beteiligen sich an Sportsbegegnungen auf nationaler Ebene. Irina Zamfirescu von Active Watch sagte uns, dass nach diesem besonderen Basketballspiel eine Kampagne zur Sensibilisierung der Bukarester Stadtverwaltung folgen wird. Die Stadtverwaltung soll verstehen, dass die Stadt allen Mitbürgern zugänglich sein muss. Darüber hinaus sollten sich auch die Bürger in Geduld üben. Irina Zamfirescu:

Die Diskriminierung der Behinderten ist ein Problem, das wir auf die Agenda der Öffentlichkeit bringen wollen. Zurzeit haben Behinderte keinen Zugang zum grö‎ßten öffentlichen Gut, zu ihrer Stadt, Bukarest. Anschlie‎ßend führt das zur Diskriminierung in den Bereichen Ausbildung und Zugang zum Arbeitsmarkt — es ist ein Alarmsignal.“

Gegen die Rollstuhlbasketballer von der Stiftung Motivation spielten bekannte rumänische Blogger, die für dieses Spiel in Rollstühlen sa‎ßen. Vor dem Spiel versuchten die Blogger, die mitmachen wollten, sich die besonderen Regeln des Rollstuhlbasketballspiels schnell, an Ort und Stelle, zu merken. Der Trainer der Mannschaft Motivation Ilfov, Alin Săftel, sagte uns, das Spiel sei sehr spannend gewesen. Über die Blogger-Mannschaft sagte er:

Ich versuchte, ihnen einige Tipps über das Benutzen des Rollsuhls zu geben, aber das ging ihnen zu schnell. Wir haben während des Spiels gesehen, dass es ihnen schwer fiel, den Rollstuhl zu lenken. Bis sie sich daran gewöhnt hatten, war das Spiel leider schon zu Ende.“

Cristian China Brita ist einer der Blogger, die sich entschieden hatten, an diesem Basketballspiel teilzunehmen. Wie hat er es empfunden?

Es war eine Lektion fürs Leben. Einige Minuten lang haben wir empfunden, wie sich die Rollstuhlfahrer jeden Tag fühlen. Wir nehmen es als selbstverständlich hin, dass wir uns auf den eigenen Beinen frei bewegen können. Für uns, ‚Beinchen‘, wie uns die Leute von der Motivation Stiftung nennen, ist das ganz natürlich. Diesmal mussten wir uns in den Rollstuhl setzen und damit fahren — oh, Mann, sie haben uns bei diesem Basketballspiel vielleicht geschlagen! Wir wurden mit einem unerbittlichen Punkteunterschied besiegt. Wir waren am Boden geschlagen, und sie waren gro‎ßartig. Es ist wunderbar zu sehen, was hier passiert, man spürt die Energie und den Enthusiasmus der Leute, man schaut sie sich an und lernt ganz viel von ihnen. Die kleinen Probleme des Alltags werden nach und nach vergessen, und man beginnt, das Leben mehr zu genie‎ßen.“

BUKAREST: Die Verstärkung der bilateralen strategischen Partnerschaft im politischen, militärischen und Sicherheitsbereich — über dieses und andere aktuelle Themen diskutierte der rumänische Staatssekretär für strategische Angelegenheiten, Bogdan Aurescu, mit Vertretern der US-Administration am Freitag in Washington. Dabei bekräftigte Aurescu die Argumente für eine erhöhte Präsenz der USA und der NATO in den Staaten an der Ostgrenze der Nordatlantischen Allianz, einschlie‎ßlich in Rumänien, auf dem Hintergrund der besorgniserregenden Entwicklungen in den Nachbarstaaten, steht in einem Communique des rumänischen Aussenministeriums. Ferner plädiert Rumänien für eine Erweiterung der militärischen Kooperation mit den USA. Das wichtigste strategische Projekt in der Geschichte der bilateralen Beziehungen, die Einrichtung eines amerikanischen Raketenschutzschildes in der südrumänischen Ortschaft Deveselu, läuft nach Plan und wird 2015 funktionsfähig.

BUKAREST: In allen Gemeinden der Rumänischen Orthodoxen Kirche in Rumänien und im Ausland finden am Samstag Prozessionen anlä‎ßlich der Feier am Palmsonntag. Mit dem Palmsonntag beginnt in der orthodoxen Kirche die Gro‎ße und Heilige Woche, die als eigenständige Fastenzeit betrachtet wird. Der Palmsonntag zählt zu den zwölf Gro‎ßen Festen in der orthodoxen Kirche. Dieses Jahr feiern Orthodoxen und Katholiken gleichzeitig Palmsonntag; aus diesem Anla‎ß findet in Bukarest eine Prozession statt, die vom Römisch-Katholischen Erzbistum organisiert wird. Am Palmsonntag feiert die katholische Kirche jedes Jahr auch den Weltjugendtag. Der Weltjugendtag (WJT) wird von der katholischen Kirche ausgerichtet und geht auf eine Initiative von Papst Johannes Paul II. zurück. Seit 1985 lädt das katholische Kirchenoberhaupt jährlich junge Christen aller Erdteile zu einem Treffen unter einem bestimmten Motto ein. Das Treffen am 13. April 2014 steht unter dem Motto: “Selig, die arm sind vor Gott, denn ihnen gehört das Himmelreich.”

Am 12. April feiert man in der ganzen Welt den Internationalen Tag der bemannten Raumfahrt. Vor 53 Jahren, am 12. April 1961, flog der sowjetische Kosmonaut Juri Gagarin mit der Wostok 1 ins Weltall. Er war der erste Mensch in der Schwerelosigkeit. Die Raumfahrt erlebte 1969 dank der Raumfahrtmision Apollo 11 einen Höhepunkt mit der bemannten Mondlandung. Die drei Astronauten Neil Armstrong, Edwin Buzz“ Aldrin und Michael Collins starteten am 16. Juli 1969 mit einer Saturn-V-Rakete vom Kennedy Space Center in Florida und erreichten am 19. Juli eine Mondumlaufbahn. Während Collins im Kommandomodul des Raumschiffs Columbia zurückblieb, betrat Armstrong als erster Mensch den Mond, kurz danach auch Aldrin. Nach der Mondlandung wurde die internationale Kooperation im Raumfahrtbereich intensiver; in den letzten Jahren investierte China gro‎ße Summen, um die Verspätungen gegenüber den USA und Russland nachzuholen. Dumitru Prunariu ist der erste und einzige Rumäne, der an einer Raumfahrtmission teilgenommen hat.

Der rumänische Radsportler mit Handicap Eduard Novak hat am Freitag bei den UCI-Weltmeisterschaften im mexikanischen Aguascalientes in der Probe 4 Kilometer Verfolgung Kategorie C4 die Bronzemedaille gewonnen. Seit 2006 organisiert der internationale Radsportverband Welttitelkämpfe im Bahnradsport für Sportlerinnen und Sportler mit Handicap. Carol Eduard Novak ist ein rumänischer Bahn-, Mountainbike- und Stra‎ßenradrennfahrer. Vor seiner sportlichen Laufbahn als Radfahrer, war Novak als Eisschnellläufer aktiv, bis er bei einem Unfall verletzt wurde und er somit aufs Rad steigen musste. Novak ist fünffacher Weltmeister und der einzige Paralympics-Champion in der Geschichte des rumänischen Sports. Die Bronzemedaille in Mexiko bringt ihm wichtige Punkte für die Paralympischen Spiele 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
