Covid-19RO. 78 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in Romania in 24 hours,
out of some 24,000 tests performed, authorities informed on Thursday. 4 related
deaths were also reported. The number of cases started to rise since July 12th,
with half of the cases reported mainly in Bucharest, Cluj, Iasi, Ilfov and
Constanta. According to data made public on the European Covid-19 Forecast Hub,
by the end of July Romania is expected to report up to 200 new cases per day.
Experts say that immunization is the solution to put an end to this health
crisis. Also on Thursday, authorities announced that some 16,000 people had
received the jab in 24 hours. So far, more than 4.7 million Romanians have been
    fully vaccinated.

    Pandemic. China has turned down
the proposal of the World Health Organization (WHO) that the expert team that
investigates the origin of Covid-19 should return to the place where the virus
first emerged for the second phase of the investigation. China’s National Health
Commission answered that the proposal, which would also mean looking into the
hypothesis that the virus escaped from a Chinese laboratory, disregards common
sense and defies science. The WHO has recently warned that the number of coronavirus
infections worldwide may reach 200 million in the next three weeks if the
growing trend maintains. Last week, the number of infections went up by 12%
globally, which is almost half a million more cases a day, while the number of
related-casualties remained stable. In Europe, the figure went up by 21%.
According to the WHO, this is due to more contagious variants of the virus,
such as Delta. Across the world, almost 193 million people have been infected
with the novel coronavirus, of whom over 175 millions have recovered and
    4.1 millions died.

Survey.. Only one in three Romanians who consider themselves victims of
an abuse by state institutions has filed complains or petitions to defend their
rights, according to the findings of a survey dubbed Be Informed, Not Abused!
conducted between April and July 2021 by the Foundation for the Defense of
Citizens Against State’s Abuses (FACIAS). 72% of the respondents say they have
been victims of abuse by an institution of the Romanian state at least once. Of
    them, 32% filed a complaint, 12% made a verbal complaint, 11% opened a court
case while 25% did not take any action. Only 9% of the respondents say they
have never been the victims of such abuse.

    Organized crime. Prosecutors with the
Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) and
policemen have conducted 17 searches in Bucharest and five counties to
dismantle a group involved in embezzlement, fraud and money laundering. Some
380 people have been brought in for hearing. The suspects had bank accounts
opened in Romania, Slovakia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, the UK,
Germany and other countries. During the search, 100 thousand euros have been
confiscated, as well as 250 mobile phones, bank documents issued by other EU
countries and the Russian Federation, laptops and bank cards.

    Award. The President of
    Romania, Klaus Iohannis, awarded Father
Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the National Order ‘Star of
Romania’ on the occasion of his 70th birthday. This is a sign of high
appreciation for the exceptional contribution to guiding the pastoral,
missionary, cultural, social and philanthropic activity of the Romanian
Orthodox Church, in the country and in the diaspora, aimed to increase the
common good by cultivating interfaith and interreligious dialogue. You are
the first Patriarch elected since our country’s accession to the European
Union. During this entire period, you have ensured that the Romanian Orthodox
Church has had its positive and well-defined place in the course and fulfillment
of the European destiny of the Romanian people, the head of state said at the ceremony. We
believe that the freedom we have in terms of expressing our faith is also one
for cooperation, for co-responsibility, for harmony and peace between all the
citizens of Romania and all Romanians, wherever they may be, Patriarch Daniel
    said in turn.

Football .Romania’s Under-23 national football team defeated Honduras 1-0 on Thursday in its debut match in Group B of the Tokyo Olympic tournament. In the same group, New Zealand beat South Korea, also 1-0. Next, Romania will be up against South Korea on July 25 and the New Zealand on July 28. The Romanian footballers qualified for the Olympics after reaching the semi-finals of the Under-21 European Championship in 2019 held in Italy and San Marino. The last time Romania participated in the Olympic football tournament was back in 1964, when it came in 5th, also in Tokyo. Romania has sent a 101-strong delegation to this edition of the Olympic Games, to compete in 17 sports disciplines. (MI)

The Public Ministry of Costa Rica decided to release them after receiving from the Romanian Justice Ministry the documentation stating that the two requests had been withdrawn. In Romania, Udrea and Bica have received definitive sentences for corruption. Just like them, other high-ranking officials in Romania have benefited from the suspension of the prison sentences they have received for corruption, after the Constitutional Court of Romania ruled that the setting up of the 5-judge panels at the High Court of Cassation and Justice was illegal.

He is the first of Jesus Christ’s apostles who preached Christianity in the south of Romania, in Dobruja. Saint Andrew is also the patron saint of Romania. Saint Andrew preached in Dobruja and in today’s Ukrainian territory, in Great Scythia, and in Byzantium. He then went to Greece and preached the Gospel, going up to Patras town where he died a martyr’s death. He was crucified on an X-shaped cross. Over 700 thousand Romanians named after St. Andrew celebrate their name day today.

CELEBRATIONS – Alba Iulia, the central Romanian city where on December 1st 1918, the Romanian nation state was proclaimed, is hosting as of today a new edition of the Congress of Romanian Spirituality, attended by representatives of Romanian communities from all over the world. This is only one of the events held on Friday and Saturday in the city, in celebration of 100 years since Romania became a nation state. Military and religious ceremonies at the monuments of the personalities and heroes that played an important role in the unification of all Romanian provinces have been scheduled for today. According to local authorities, over 100 thousand people are expected to attend celebrations in Alba Iulia on December 1st. In Bucharest, President Klaus Iohannis will host a reception on the occasion on Romania’s National Day. According to Klaus Iohannis, the centenary is not only about the past, but also about the future Romania. Being a Romanian is now the same with being a European, and means being part of a community of values that treasures freedom, democracy, solidarity, the respect for human dignity and for the rule of law, Iohannis has said. On December 1st, around 450 public events have been announced with over 550 thousand people expected to attend.

G 20 – G20 member nations are struggling to reach agreement on major issues including trade, migration and climate change as world leaders have gathered in the Buenos Aires for a summit starting on Friday. This is the first G20 summit ever held in South America. The summit takes place amid new tension with Russia over Ukraine and a US trade row with China. US President Donald Trump has cancelled a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in protest at Russias seizure of Ukrainian naval boats. Trump’s move may also be connected to the internal investigation regarding suspicions of Russian interference in the elections for the White House, commentators believe. The two-day summit in Buenos Aires will be a major test for the Group of 20 industrialized nations, whose leaders first met in 2008 to help rescue the global economy from the worst financial crisis in seven decades, but which now faces questions over its relevance to deal with the latest round of crises, Reuters reports. Overhanging the summit in Buenos Aires, the Argentine capital, is a bitter trade dispute between the United States and China, the world’s two largest economies, which have imposed tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of each other’s imports.

PARLIAMENT — The laws on the judiciary were endorsed by the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday, and are to be submitted to the Senate for a final vote. Previously, a special parliamentary committee passed the bill on the magistrate profession and the one regulating the organisation of the Higher Council of Magistracy. On Monday, the same committee passed the 3rd law in this package, the one concerning the organisation of courts. The bills were brought in line with the decisions of the Constitutional Court, after the Opposition and the High Court of Cassation and Justice challenged the changes adopted by Parliament. These changes include by-passing the President of Romania in the procedure for appointing the chiefs of the Supreme Court, and transferring this role to the Higher Council of Magistracy. The National Liberal Party and Save Romania Union, in Opposition, announced that the new amendments give them reasons to bring the new justice laws before the Constitutional Court again. In fact, Save Romania MPs resorted to an unusual protest in the Chamber of Deputies, where they lined up wearing T-shirts that read “#NoCriminals”. Some of the changes originally operated on the justice laws have generated large-scale protests among civil society and magistrates.

LA FRANCOPHONIE – On Tuesday, the Romanian Government hailed the celebration of the International Francophonie Day, and Prime Minister Viorica Dancila said that Romania was known as a beacon- state of Francophonie in Central and Eastern Europe. The Romanian Prime Minister stated that the group of francophone countries was among the first international structures that Romania joined after 1989. In 1991, Romania got the status of observer, and in 1993 it became a full member of the International Organisation of La Francophonie. In 2006 it played host to one of the organisation’s summits. Between December 2018 and July 2019, Bucharest and Paris will organise the Romania — France season, a large-scale joint project focusing on contemporary culture and creativity, as well as areas such as education, economy, sports and tourism.

CRIMEA – The Romanian Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday that Romania did not recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea and of the city of Sevastopol by the Russian Federation, and therefore it did not recognize the organisation of elections on that territory. Romania’s stand is shared by the other members of the EU as well. In a communiqué, Romania reaffirms its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of neighbouring Ukraine, within its legally acknowledged borders. Some 1.5 million voters were called to the polls in Crimea on Sunday to elect the president of Russia, exactly four years since the annexation of the peninsula.

SECURITY – The activities carried out in 2017 by institutions with security responsibilities in Romania and the main objectives for 2018 were high on the agenda of Tuesday’s meeting of the country’s Supreme Defence Council, headed by President Klaus Iohannis. The members of the council also analysed the activity of the structures responsible for cyber-security and other topics of interest with regard to national security. Seen as the umbrella of strategic ministries and enforcement institutions, the Supreme Defence Council gathered at the meeting top figures such as the Prime Minister Viorica Dancila, the ministers of internal affairs, external affairs, justice, economy and finance, the Director of the Romanian Intelligence Service Eduard Hellvig, the Deputy Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service Silviu Predoiu and the Chief of the Romanian Army’s General Staff, General Nicolae Ciuca.

BREXIT — The European affairs ministers of the EU member states, including the Romanian Minister Victor Negrescu, discussed in Brussels on Tuesday the post-Brexit relations between the Union and the UK. On the occasion, the European Commission’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier presented the general principles for the transition period, i.e. March 2019 to December 2020. Previously, Barnier and London’s negotiator David Davis had announced having reached an agreement on these guidelines, which concern, among other things, the rights of the around 4.5 million European citizens living in the UK and the 1.2 million Britons in the EU. At the end of this week the text will be discussed by the EU leaders during a meeting of the European Council.

Unionists demanded, among other things, the implementation of pay raises for all healthcare and social assistance personnel as of March 1, the scrapping of the ceiling on bonuses and the offsetting of the income decrease caused by the implementation of a new pay scheme on January 1. Also on Tuesday, representatives of the National Federation of Trade Unions in Industry picketed the Economy Ministry, against the backdrop of discontent with the law regulating the national defence industry. The union president, Ioan Neagu, said that at the beginning of the year the Government was supposed to issue a resolution to regulate the number of employees that this industrial sector may absorb per year.

MOLDOVA – The pro-Russia socialist president of the Republic of Moldova Igor Dodon claims that Romania might become Moldova’s number one enemy, if it continues to support unionist movements. The former Moldovan ambassador to Bucharest Iurie Renita has termed the statement hysterical, and by no means reflecting the view of the majority population in Moldova. Dodon has accused Romania before of having tried to interfere with the republic’s internal affairs and has insisted that unionist organisations and manifestations be banned. In the past two months, in more than 120 communes and towns in the Republic of Moldova, mayors and local councils have adopted symbolic declarations of unification with Romania and on Sunday the capital Chisinau will host an event celebrating 100 years since the union of Bessarabia with Romania. A province with a predominantly Romanian-speaking population in the tsarist empire, Bessarabia united with Romania at the end of the first world war, on March 27th, 1918. Following an ultimatum, the Soviet Union re-annexed Bessarabia in 1940, and the Republic of Moldova was created on part of that territory.

MEETING – On Tuesday, the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church Daniel received the Israeli Ambassador to Bucharest Tamar Samash. On the occasion, Daniel stressed the good relations that the Patriarchy has with the Jewish community in Romania. According to a press release, Daniel has stated that in the past years, thanks to pilgrimages to Israel, many Romanian orthodox believers have had the possibility to pray at the holy sites and to learn more about biblical tradition, and about common spiritual values. In turn the Israeli ambassador has stated that all joint projects help strengthen the relations between the two peoples and are proof of the Judeo — Christian heritage that laid the foundation of European culture.

    EASTER -
Orthodox and Greek Catholic believers worldwide are celebrating Easter, or the
Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In his Easter message, the Patriarch of the Romanian
Orthodox Church, Daniel, said the Resurrection of Christ is symbolical of the
triumph of love, which renders our lives meaningful. The high prelate also
mentioned the Romanians who live outside the borders of the country, saying
Let us not forget, in our prayers, those who live far from the country,
longing for home. We are waiting for all of them to return to the country for
good, because many of Romania’s localities are sad and helpless without them.
Our villages are getting old. Many children grow up without their parents and
many old people are helpless without their sons and daughters who live far
away, the patriarch also underlined at the Patriarchal Cathedral, during the
Easter mass, which was also attended by Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis and
his wife. According to a poll, 68% of the Romanians believe Easter should be
celebrated simultaneously by Orthodox and Catholic believers.

    VISIT -
The presence of Romanian troops on the theatre of operations in Afghanistan
comes as Romania’s firm response to NATO’s request to ensure that country’s
security and stability, says Romania’s President, Klaus Iohannis. The head of
state on Sunday visited the Romanian troops stationed at the military base in
Kandahar and celebrated Easter together. In a speech to the military, President
Iohannis underlined that Afghanistan is, for the North Atlantic Alliance, the
main battlefront against terrorism. He added that the reconstruction of that
country entails long-term efforts, fully assumed by the international
community. The Romanian President also met with brigadier general Antonio
Aguto, commander, Train, Advise, Assist Command – South, in Afghanistan. The
talks between the two officials underlined the excellent level of cooperation

    NEW UCC -
The main customs formalities will be simplified as of May 1, following the
enforcement of the new Union Customs Code across the EU. The code sets common
and streamlined procedures in all EU member states, to make life simpler for
businesses doing trade in Europe. The same rules apply regardless of where in
the EU the goods are declared and once the goods have cleared customs in a
member state, they can circulate freely or be sold anywhere within the EU
customs territory, that is in any of the 28 member states. Furthermore, the use of
IT &C becomes mandatory. Thus, the European Commission hopes to reduce tax
evasion in the field of cross-border trade, which currently stands at 50
    billion Euros a year.

NATIONAL OPERA ROW – Romanian Prime Minister Dacian
Ciolos on Tuesday will send to President Klaus Iohannis the proposal to revoke
Vlad Alexandrescu from the position of culture minister and to nominate another
person at the helm of that institution. The revocation comes against the
backdrop of the Bucharest National Opera scandal, which was generated by
general discontent about successive nominations at the top management of the
institution and about salary disparities between Romanian and foreign ballet
dancers. Protests led to the cancellation of three performances and prompted
Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos to demand Vlad Alexandrescu’s resignation. In
several Facebook posts and articles in the press, Vlad Alexandrescu claims he
had to leave office because he had reportedly disturbed various groups of
interests, such as those in Rosia Montana, which he added on the country’s
tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Prime Minister said he hadn’t
been briefed on the problems Vlad Alexandrescu claims to have been faced with,
and promised to request the new culture minister to go ahead with the reforms
    started by his/her predecessor.

Gustaf XVI of Sweden and Queen Silvia paid a state visit to Romania back in
    2003.

bus and can be used all day long, for tourists to be able to visit all tourist
    attractions in Romania’s capital city.

Badou Jack in Washington on Sunday morning for the WBC super middleweight belt,
the oldest and most prestigious belt in boxing. The match ended in a draw. In
such a situation, the belt is kept by the defending world super middleweight champion,

Across the world, billions of Christians are today celebrating Christmas, the traditional birthday of Jesus Christ. In his Christmas address, Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church has urged believers to look for inner peace, which is the key to achieving social peace. Patriarch Daniel has also said that the Church must work towards promoting mutual respect and reconciliation, which should replace hatred and violence present in today’s world. In his turn, Pope Francis has warned the worlds 1.2 billion Roman Catholics not to be “intoxicated” by possessions in his annual Christmas homily. He called for more sobriety in a world obsessed by “consumerism and hedonism, wealth and extravagance”.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, in a video message posted on his Facebook page, has said that the Christmas spirit means having the loved ones around and celebrating generosity, harmony and peace. President Iohannis has also mentioned the Romanians outside the country’s borders, whom he encourages to be confident that Romania’s situation will further improve. The head of state has wished all Romanians a Merry Christmas. Romania’s former sovereign, King Michael I, has referred in his Christmas message to both the young generation, expressing his confidence in their future, and to the elderly, who are teaching a lesson of courage and dignity. The former sovereign has conveyed a message of encouragement to and appreciation for those working in hospitals, saving lives, and to those who are in mourning or are worried about the health condition of their loved ones.

The EU – Republic of Moldova Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area will be extended as of January 1st, 2016, to include the country’s whole territory, including the region of Transdniester . Therefore, starting 2016, all economic agents in the Republic of Moldova will export their products to the European Union based on the same free trade principle. Also, in order to benefit from the commercial opportunities offered, the region of Transdniester has committed to ensuring preferential access conditions to the goods and services coming from the EU and to making some adjustments to the commercial, economic and fiscal framework.

In Chisinau, prime minister designate Ion Sturza has announced that he will ask for the Parliament’s vote of confidence on January 4th. In the meantime, he will hold consultations with political parties, civil society, representatives of the international organisations and ambassadors of the Western countries in Moldova. Sturza supports the idea of a technocratic government and says the country’s economic situation is extremely serious. Only one political party, the Liberal Democratic Party, has so far voiced support for the new cabinet that Sturza will propose. According to Radio Chisinau, a new political power was formed in the Moldovan Parliament, made up of 34 MPs out of the total 101. The European Commission calls on EU member states to help Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia overcome the refugee crisis. Brussels has warned that too few member states have responded to the calls for humanitarian assistance to Serbia, Slovenia and Croatia in the current refugee crisis. Serbia, Slovenia and Croatia activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism so as to receive assistance in the refugee crisis, the Commission said in a release, underscoring that a large number of resources must still be provided for them. The Mechanism can mobilize various types of in-kind assistance, including teams and equipment, shelter, medical supplies and other non-food items, as well as expertise. Brussels has announced that 1.7 billion euros have been earmarked from the EU budget for 2015 and 2016 for solving the refugee crisis. Around 1 million people have fled their countries of origin this year, in an attempt to escape war and poverty, heading mostly towards Germany.
