    After the first two matches, Romania ranks third in Group B of the European Women’s Handball Championships. In Debrecen, Hungary, the team coached by Florentin Pera secured a 29-28 win against Czechia on Friday, but lost to Montenegro on Sunday 25-27. Romania’s side is one of the youngest in competition after the withdrawal of several senior players including Cristina Neagu and Crina Pintea.

    The decisive match for qualification will be on Tuesday when Romania is to take on Serbia, a side, which has so far lost two matches, to Montenegro and Czechia. The first two sides in each group will qualify for the competitions’ next stage.

    Last weekend saw the football matches counting towards the 18th leg of the Romanian Superleague. Both games held on Friday ended in draws: FC Botoşani vs. Farul Constanţa, nil-all, and Rapid Bucharest versus Petrolul Ploieşti, one-all. On Saturday, Hermannstadt clinched a 2-1 away win against Unirea Slobozia.

    Then Gloria Buzău obtained a 2-0 home win against Poli Iaşi. In the day’s last match, in Bucharest, local side Dinamo ended in a one-all draw their match against Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe. On Sunday, in the leg’s most important match, CFR Cluj clinched a 2-0 away win against Universitatea Craiova. In the leg’s last two matches on Monday, Universitatea Cluj takes on UTA and Oţelul Galaţi on FCSB. Two sides from Cluj, CFR and Universitatea, are presently topping the table at a difference of one point.

    Dennis Man, a midfielder of Romania’s national team was one of the best players of his side, Parma, during its game against Lazio in the 14th leg of the Italian championships, which ended 3-1 to Parma.

    Man capitalized on a mistake by Lazio’s players and put Parma in the lead in the 6th minute. This has been the fourth goal of the Romanian international in the present edition of Serie A. Tunisian Mohamad Haj added a second for Parma on minute 53, while Argentine Tay Castellanos scored for the visitors in the 80th minute. Enrico Del Prato sealed the points in the extra-time. Parma is presently ranking 11th in Serie A, with 15 points.

    Romanian athlete Ramona Andries
    came second in the 49 kilogram category of the World Weightlifting Cup in Doha,
    Qatar. In the snatch event Andries managed to lift 86 kilograms being
    outperformed by Chinese Rong Zhang with 92.






    The Romanian also went second in
    the jerk contest with 101 kilograms being defeated by Zhang who also won the
    total competition with 195 kilograms. Andries also came second in the total
    event with 187 kilograms. The Romanian athlete has thus gathered important points
    for a place in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 as the contest in Doha was one of the
    qualifying stages for the world’s most prestigious sporting event.






    The Romanian women’s volleyball
    side CSM Bucharest conceded a 3-0 defeat on their own ground to the Russian
    side Dinamo Moscow on Thursday in a game counting towards the Champions
    League’s group E. The game on Thursday was CSM’s second game in the group after
    the one they ended in a 3-1 win against Polish side Chemik Police.






    The Romanians will be playing their
    next game on January 23rd when they are to take on Fenerbahce
    Istanbul in an away game. The Turkish side tops the group E’s ranking with 6
    points, followed by Dinamo Moscow with 3 points, CSM with the same number of
    points and the Polish side with no point.






    Romania’s national football side is
    to end the year on the 24th position in the International Football
    Federation’s ranking published on Thursday. This is the highest position the
    Romanian side has obtained since 2016. At the beginning of the year our
    footballers were ranking 40th, but went up in the standings after
    winning 7 out of the 10 international games they played in 2018 and drawing
    another three. Out of Romania’s future opponents in the EURO 2020 qualifiers,
    Spain is ranking 9th, Sweden 14th, Norway 46th,
    the Faeroe Islands 98th and Malta 182nd. Belgium tops the
    ranking followed by the world champions, France, and by Brazil.






    This week has seen the games of the
    21st leg of Romania’s first football league, the last this year. The
    first game took place on Wednesday. In Craiova, local side Universitatea
    secured a 2-0 win against Gaz Metan Medias. On Thursday, FC Botosani clinched a
    1-0 win against Dunarea Calarasi, while in Giurgiu, southern Romania, local
    team Astra obtained a 4-1 win against Dinamo Bucharest.






    Two matches have been scheduled for
    Friday, Poli Iasi versus FC Voluntari and Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe is up against
    Concordia Chiajna.






    Saturday will be seeing the leg’s
    last games this year. In Cluj, local eleven Hermannstadt will be taking on
    Viitorul Constanta. The National Arena in Bucharest will be hosting the game
    pitching local side FCSB against CFR Cluj, which is topping the ranking at
    present with 43 points. FCSB comes next with 40 points, but if the latter wins
    at a difference of at lest two goals, they are to end the year on the first
    position in the ranking.

    Claudiu Keşeru a marcat un gol pentru formaţia bulgară
    Ludogoreţ Razgrad, care a surclasat echipa nord-irlandeză Crusaders Belfast cu
    scorul de 7-0, miercuri, pe teren propriu, în prima manşă din turul întâi preliminar
    al Ligii Campionilor la fotbal. Atacantul român a înscris al treilea gol al
    campioanei Bulgariei, în minutul 53, şi a fost schimbat în minutul 68. Fundaşul
    Cosmin Moţi a jucat pentru echipa bulgară pe întreaga durată a partidei. Manşa
    secundă se va disputa pe 17 iulie, la Belfast.


    Echipa de fotbal Gaz Metan Mediaş a fost învinsă de formaţia
    Javor Ivanjica cu scorul de 3-1, în ultimul joc de verificare susţinut în
    stagiul de pregătire din Serbia. Echipa din Mediaş şi-a încheiat cantonamentul cu
    trei înfrângeri şi două victorii. În prima partidă, a trecut de Spartak
    Subotica cu scorul de 1-0, apoi a pierdut cu Zemun Belgrad, scor 0 la 1. A
    urmat o victorie cu 2-0 în faţa echipei Mladost Lucani, după care au venit două
    înfrângeri: 1-3 cu echipa rusă Mordovia
    Saransk şi 1-3 cu Javor Ivanjica.


    Poli Iaşi a terminat la egalitate jocul disputat în stagiul
    din Turcia cu echipa iraniană de fotbal Traktor Sazi, scor 2 la 2. Pentru
    ieşeni au marcat Vlad Danale şi Andrei Cristea.


    În Austria, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe a fost învinsă de formaţia
    slovacă Zlate Moravce cu scorul de 1-0. Pe 13 iulie, Sepsi va juca ultimul meci
    de verificare din acest stagiu de pregătire, cu echipa rusă Orenburg.


    Încheiem cu o ştire din fotbalul feminin. Jucătoarea română
    Ştefania Vătafu a semnat un contract cu campioana Belgiei, Anderlecht Bruxelles.
    În sezonul trecut, ea a evoluat la echipa spaniolă Tenerife, cu care a încheiat pe locul
    patru în Primera Division, după Atletico Madrid, Barcelona şi Athletic Bilbao. Anderlecht
    va evolua în Grupa a 3-a preliminară a UEFA Women’s Champions League, alături
    de formaţia scoţiană Glasgow City, de Gornik Leczna, din Polonia, şi de Martve,
    din Georgia.
