    Romania at the Olympic Games

    Rower Mădălina Bereş and swimmer Robert Glinţă have been
    designated the flag bearers of Romania’s team at the Olympics in Tokyo, the
    Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee has announced. Mădălina Bereş was a
    bronze medalist at the Olympic Games in Rio 2016, world champion with Romania’s
    eight and six times European champion. Glinta is the first Romanian swimmer to
    win gold at the European Championships and the first athlete qualified for the
    Tokyo Olympics.






    The first Romanian flag bearer at the Olympic Games was
    Iosif Sarbu, in Melbourne 1956. He used to be Olympic champion in the shooting
    contest of the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. An illness in his right eye prompted
    him to modify his gun to be able to use his left eye for shooting and went
    fifth in Melbourne, a remarkable performance under the given circumstances.






    However, the athlete with the largest number of
    participations as Romania’s flag bearer was kayaker Aurel Vernescu. He carried
    the flag for Romania three times, in Tokyo 1964, Mexico, four years later and
    Munich 1972. He was designated flag bearer after he had won two world titles in
    Yugoslavia in 1963.






    He compelled recognition in Tokyo as well with a bronze
    medal in the 500-meter individual race and with the Romanian four in the 1000-meter
    event. In Munich 1972, he stepped onto the podium’s second step with the
    Romanian four in the 1000-meter race.


    Elisabeta Lipa became the first woman athlete to wear the
    flag for Romania at the Olympic Games. She had this honour in Sydney in 2000
    and Athens in 2004.


    Lipa obtained her first Olympic gold in Los Angeles in 1984
    together with Marioara Popescu in the double sculls event.




    Four years later she got bronze with the Romanian four and
    silver in the double sculls. She dominated the individual races for many years
    and eventually reaped the Olympic title in Barcelona in 1992. She later joined
    the famous Romanian eight with which she managed to win another three gold
    medals, in Atlanta in 1996, in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.




    Gymnasts from Romania have obtained the largest number of
    notable performances in international competitions. And the first gymnast to
    bear the Romanian flag in the Olympics was Catalina Ponor, triple Olympic
    champion in Athens 2004.

    Taxis – Plus de 500 chauffeurs de taxi ont protesté mercredi devant le siège du gouvernement principalement contre les plates-formes technologiques en ligne proposant des services de voiture à disposition du public. Ils dénoncent l’absence d’une législation claire dans le domaine censée sanctionner toute activité non autorisée dans le domaine du transport de personnes. Ils demandent que les services qui ne disposent pas de licence spécifique et ne paient pas de taxes en Roumanie soient mis hors la loi. Le jour même, le ministre des Consultations Publiques et du Dialogue Social, Gabriel Petrea, et les représentants des transporteurs autorisés de Roumanie sont arrivés mercredi à un accord. Concrètement, les autorités roumaines s’engagent à créer d’ici 30 jours un projet pour modifier la loi sur le transport en régime de taxi et de location. De leur côté, les transporteurs ont accepté d’arrêter les manifestations. En même temps on a démarré les pourparlers pour trouver une solution aux autres problèmes dénoncés par les transporteurs roumains.

    Diplomatie – Le premier ministre géorgien Ghiorghi Kvirikachvili effectue une visite officielle de deux jours en Roumanie. Mercredi, il s’est entretenu avec le premier ministre roumain Sorin Grindeanu. L’occasion pour ce dernier de déclarer que la Géorgie continuerait d’être un pays ami et partenaire de la Roumanie et que les relations diplomatiques bilatérales ont toujours été très bonnes, depuis leur établissement il y a 25 ans. A son tour, le responsable géorgien a affirmé être reconnaissant à Bucarest pour son rôle dans le processus d’intégration européenne de son pays. Par ailleurs, les deux responsables ont signé une déclaration politique de coopération et ont convenu de la reprise de l’activité de la Commission mixte intergouvernementale de coopération économique, après une pause de 15 ans. L’agenda de la visite du premier ministre géorgien en Roumanie comporte également : des pourparlers avec le président roumain, Klaus Iohannis, et le président du Sénat, Calin Popescu Tariceanu. Notons aussi que durant le premier trimestre de l’année 2017, le volume des échanges commerciaux entre les deux pays a dépassé les 44,3 millions de dollars.

    Gymnastes – Le président roumain Klaus Iohannis a signé mercredi les décrets de décoration des gymnastes Cătălina Ponor, Larisa Iordache et Marian Drăgulescu. Les distinctions leurs sont offertes en signe de haute appréciation pour les résultats remarquables obtenus au Championnat d’Europe de Gymnastique Artistique tenus du 19 au 23 avril à Cluj-Napoca (nord-ouest). Rappelons-le, la délégation de la Roumanie y a décroché deux médailles d’or (Marian Drăgulescu au sol et Cătălina Ponor à la poutre) une médaille d’argent (Marian Drăgulescu, aux sauts) et une médaille de bronze (Larisa Iordache à la poutre).

    WASHINGTON: Verteidigungsminister Mihnea Motoc hat seine zweitägige USA-Reise beendet. In Washington nahm er an einem Treffen der Partnerstaaten der US-geführten Koalition gegen die Terrormiliz Islamischer Staat teil. Motoc bekräftigte dabei die Unterstützung Rumäniens für die Aktionen der internationalen Gemeinschaft im Irak. Diese sollen die territoriale Integrität und Souveränität des Landes innerhalb der international anerkannten Grenzen sichern. Rumänien wird sich in diesem Jahr an den Koalitionsmissionen mit einem Aufgebot von bis zu 50 Militärs beteiligen. Sie sollen die irakischen Sicherheitskräfte beraten und ausbilden.



    BUKAREST: Rumäniens parteiloser Ministerpräsident Dacian Cioloş hat sich am Freitag zu Gesprächen mit den Botschaftern der EU-Staaten getroffen. Dabei kamen unter anderem die Zukunft der Staatengemeinschaft, die Folgen des Austritts Großbritanniens und die Entwicklung in der Türkei zur Sprache. Erörtert wurden ferner die Lage in der Moldau, die Visabestimmungen Kanadas und der USA und die rumänische EU-Ratspräsidentschaft im Jahr 2019. Das Treffen hatte einen informellen Charakter und keine Entscheidungsfindungen zur Folge.



    BUKAREST: Der Vorsitzende des Obersten Richterrates, Mircea Aron, hat seiner Besorgnis zur Lage in der Türkei Ausdruck verliehen. Infolge des versuchten Staatsstreichs sei eine mögliche Verletzung der Rechtsstaatprinzipien zu befürchten, vor allem Richter und Staatsanwälte betreffend. Aron fordert Ankara in einer Mitteilung auf, die Einhaltung aller internationalen Menschenrechtsbestimmungen und Übereinkommen zu garantieren, die die Türkei unterzeichnet hat. Die Türkei hatte nach der Verhängung des Ausnahmezustands angekündigt, die Europäische Menschenrechtskonvention teilweise auszusetzen.



    BUKAREST: Die Türkei schenkt der Situation der ausländischen Touristen, die sich im Moment in der Türkei befinden, eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit. Das sagte der türkische Botschafter in Bukarest, Osman Koray Ertaş bei einem Treffen mit dem Staatssekretär für Europafragen, Cristian Bădescu. Rumänien sei an einer stabilen türkischen Republik als Mitglied der NATO und Schlüsselpartner der EU interessiert, hieß es von rumänischer Seite.



    BUKAREST: Die Turnerin Cătălina Ponor wird die Landesflagge Rumäniens bei der Eröffnungszeremonie der Olympischen Spiele von Rio de Janeiro tragen dürfen. Am Freitag überreichte ihr Präsident Klaus Iohannis die Fahne im feierlichen Rahmen. Iohannis sagte dabei, dass Rumänien dringend Sportprogramme an Schulen fördern müsse, um als Nation sportlich konkurrenzfähig und gesund zu bleiben. Rumänien beteiligt sich in Rio an 16 Disziplinen.
