    Athlete of the Week

The first major sporting event of the year in athletics was hosted by Istanbul in Turkey. The European Indoor Athletics Championships brought together roughly 600 athletes from 47 countries and Romania was represented by 14 athletes, 7 in the mens competitions and 7 in the womens contests. Four of them had made it to the finals of their competitions: Claudia Bobocea in the 15 hundred meter race. Alina Rotaru and Gabriel Bitan in the long jump event and Gabriela Stanciu in the high jump contest. Bitan won bronze in the event and Bobocea became silver medalist and has also been designated Athlete of the Week by Radio Romania International.

We recall that Romania also put up a good show at the 2015 indoor edition in Prague, when Marian Oprea became bronze medalist in the triple jump event and Florentina Iusco in the long jump event. At the latest edition in Torun, Poland, the best Romanian performance was obtained by Daniela Stanciu who came fifth in the high jump contest. In Istanbul, Stanciu ranked seventh and Alina Rotaru fifth.

Gabriel Bitan has won for Romania the first European medal in the mens long jump event since the silver obtained by Bogdan Ţăruş in 2005.

However, the most interesting performance was obtained by Claudia Bobocea in the 15 hundred meter race, where she obtained the best time in her entire career, 4 minutes, 3 seconds and 76 hundredths. She was outperformed by multiple world and Olympic medalist Laura Muir, of Britain who ended the race only 36 hundredths before the Romanian athlete. Sofia Ennaoui of Poland came third in the race.

Claudia Bobocea was bron in Bucharest on 11th June 1992 and took up athletics in 2007. She has always been among the worlds fastest runners in middle-distance races, although she has failed to obtain medals in major competitions.

In 2016, she qualified for the 800 meter race in Rio Olympics but unfortunately went 51st. She obtained her best indoor performance in 2019 in Glasgow, when she ended the race in the seventh place, so the medal in Istanbul is her best performance so far.

The ICF 2022 Canoe Sprint World Championships were
held in Halifax, Canada, last week. The
competition lived up to everyone’s expectations in every respect; nautical
sports lovers had the chance the watch, live or via video transmissions, the
best of the best in terms of rowing. In Canada, a 6-strong Romanian delegation proved
its mettle in the competition, with three athletes competing in the kayak and three
others in the canoe races. The gender balance also worked, as two women and one
man competed in the kayak races, while two men and one woman took the start in
the canoe events. The differences lay in the clubs rowers are signed up by: three
of them compete for CSA Steaua, two for CS Dinamo, while one woman rower is
signed up by Olimpia Bucharest. The Romanian Kayak-Canoe Federation’s set
target was the earning of a position among places 4 to 6, and another position,
among places 6 to 9, so the eventual aim was the qualification to two separate
finals. The set target was met from the very first days of competition, when Catalin
Chirila advanced to the 500 and 1000m men’s canoe final. Chirila succeeded a
straight qualification, each time winning the heat he competed in. In the final, Catalin Chirila
provided a stunning surprise: he became world champion in the
1000m Olympic race and won silver in the 500m race. Reason enough for Radio
Romania International to designate Catalin Chirila the Athlete of the week.

    Cătălin Chirilă was
born in Tulcea, on 11 May 11, 1998. He is signed up by the Steaua Bucharest
Army Sports Club. His coaches are Petre Kondrat, who works for the army club
and Florin Popescu, of the national team. Catalin Chirila’s first international
performance occurred in the men’s canoe double, when, jointly with veteran
rower Victor Mihalachi, Chirila won gold in 2019, in the European Games in Minsk, Belarus, in the 1000m race. Then in 2021, in the European Championships in Poland’s
Poznan, Chirila won bronze in the 1000m race. In the Tokyo Olympics’, the Chirila/Mihalachi
pair came in 5th. As of 2022, Catalin Chirila competes in men’s
singles events. At the World Cup stages in Racice and Poznan, Catalin Chirila’s
results were promising. The Romanian confirmed his excellent performance so far in his most recent notable run in

Romanian football team FCSB has won the first leg of the tie against Slovak opponents Dunajska Streda, 1-nil, away from home. The fixture counts towards the European competition’s third preliminary round. FCSB’s Montenegrin midfielder Risto Radunović’s free kick enabled Estonian center back Joonas Tamm to score an unstoppable header goal. FCSB had the upper hand throughout the game, tactically, but also in terms of physical engagement, so FCSB are the favorites to making headway into the competition. The return leg is scheduled this coming Thursday, on the National Arena in Bucharest. If they outclass Dunajska Streda, FCSB will play the winner of the fixture pitting Norway’s Viking Stavanger against Sligo Rovers of the Irish Republic. FCSB’s next scheduled confrontation will decide their access to the Conference League group stage.

The 2022 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships are underway in Halifax, Canada. The Romanian delegation’s main favorite to winning a medal, Cătălin Chirilă, on Wednesday qualified to the K1 500m race, having emerged as winner of the heat he was part of. Chirila clocked one minute, 50 seconds and 27 hundredths of a second, the best timing of this past Wednesday’s heat races. The Romanian was two seconds better than the 1000m race Olympic champion, the Brazilian Isaquias Queiroz. We recall that in 2022, at the World Championships in Copenhagen, no Romanian individual rower or crew succeeded to reach as far as the finals. In 2019, at then the World Championships in Hungary’s Szeged, Romania also had a lackluster run. Best-placed back then was the men’s canoe double 1000m crew, made of Victor Mihalachi and Cătălin Chirilă who came in 5th and who also secured their qualification to the Tokyo Olympics. In the 2017 edition of the of World Championships held in Racice, the Czech Republic, Victor Mihalachi and Leonid Carp won silver in the men’s canoe double 500m race.

On Wednesday, in the round of 16 as part of the WTA 250 Washington tennis tournament, an event with 215,750 USD in prize money, Simona Halep pulled out of competition. Third-seeded Halep had no choice other than retire for medical reasons, after only 66 minutes of play, when her opponent, Russia’s Ana Kalinskaya, had a 7-5, 2-nil advantage. In the women’s doubles, the Czech-Romanian pair made of Monica Niculescu and Lucie Hradecka advanced to the semifinals, having secured a 7-6, 3-6, 10-2 win against the all-American pair made of Makenna Jones and Sloane Stephens.(EN)

    Romanian
national football team has had a flawed debut confrontation in the fresh edition
of the National League’ Division B. In Podgorica, Romania sustained a nil-2
defeated by the host team, Montenegro. Scoring for the hosts were Stefan Mugoša on 66 minutes and Marko Vukčević in minute 87. Both
goals were made possible because of captain Vlad Chiricheş’s errors of the
pitch. Montenegro definitely had the upper hand tactically but also in one-to-one
confrontations. It took our national squad 94 minutes of play to make at attempted
shot at goal. It was the first official match of Romanian national team’s new
head-coach, Edward Iordanescu. The latter took full responsibility for the
failure. Yet Iordanescu stressed that he did not take over a functional team,
but a team that several times wasted the opportunity to qualify for international
competitions. In another Group 3 fixture as part of League B, in Helsinki, Finland
drew against Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1-all. After the first round, Romania is at
the bottom of the table. On Tuesday in Zenica Romanian faces Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Romania’s defender Iulian Cristea will be unavailable for the match. We recall
Cristea sustained a serious injury early into the match against Montenegro.
According to head-coach Iordanescu, Cristea needs a long recovery break.

Romanian handballer Cristina Neagu has been
designated the most efficient scorer in this year’s edition of the Champions’ League.
Even after the League’s final tournament, held this past weekend in Budapest, all
told, no other handballer was able to score more goals that Neagu’s 110. We recall
Cristina Neagu’s current team, CSM Bucharest, was unable to move past the quarterfinals.
Also, Neagu, for the seventh time running, was included in the dream team of
the Champions League’s season, created according to the supporters’ votes.
    33-year old Neagu has also been included in the All-Star team before, in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2021. Norway’s

final Vipers outclassed Gyor of Hungary, 33 to 31. Playing for Gyor was Romanian
national team’s pivot, Crina Pintea, who scored three goals.

    The southern Romanian

in top international competitions. For instance, distance runner Mihaela
Bobocea, has had an eventful week. On Tuesday at the international competition
in Ostrava, the Czech Republic, Bobocea came in 4th in the 1,500m
race. However, her timing secured Mihaela Bobocea the ticket for the World
Championships held in July in the USA, but also the European Championships held

Romania’s best performance as part of The
European Rallies’ Championship in the modern era. This
is the rating of Romanian Sports Automobile Federation for this past weekend’s
performance of Simone Tempestini. In the second stage of the European Rallies’ Championship,
the Azores Islands’ Rally, the Italian-born Romanian rally driver came in 4th.
For his notable feat as part of the rally in the Atlantic archipelago, Radio
Romania International has designated Tempestini the Athlete of the Week.

According to Agerpres News Agency, in the
Azores islands rally, Simone Tempestini and his co-driver, Sergiu Itu, also won
two special events, coming in second in other three. The Tempestini / Itu crew,
driving a Skoda Fabia R5, were outclassed by 50 seconds and 4 tenths of a second
by the all-Spanish winning crew made of Efren Llarena and Sara Fernandez, who
clocked 2 hours, 24 minutes, 58 seconds and 3 tenths of a second. The Romanian
crew’s exceptional trail somehow balanced out their unassuming debut in the ongoing
season. We recall that two weeks ago Tempestini and Itu had to abandon the race
in the first stage of the European Rallies Championship held in Portugal, when
they were a mere 10 kilometers away from finishing the race. At the moment, Tempestini
is 8th placed according to the general rankings, with 23 points. With 45 points, Portuguese driver Armindo Araujo is at the top of the table. Following in descending order are Spaniards Efren
Llarena and Nil Solans, with 42 and 32 points, respectively.

    Many-time
Romania’s national rally champion Simone Tempestini was born on August 12,
1994, in Treviso, Italy. He came to Romania with his father, Marco Tempestini, who was hired as a professional rally driver as a
member of the Cluj-based Napoca Rally Academy team. It was also with Napoca
Rally Academy team that, while still a junior competitor, Simone made his debut
in 2009. In 2016 Simone became a world juniors’ champion. Simone was granted

  • The trials and tribulations of The Union Act of December 1st, 1918

The trials and tribulations of The Union Act of December 1st, 1918

Transylvanias union with Romania received votes in favour from 1,228 delegates. They were assembled in Alba Iulia, in central Transylvania, on December 1st, 1918. At the end of World War One, the national idea galvanized the Zeitgeist, so the Union was an act of free will accomplished by the Romanians living in the Carpathian basin. December 1st officially became the National Day of Romania after the collapse of the communist regime on December 22nd, 1989. After this date, historical debates have become free, so the accomplishment of December 1st, 1918, was emphatically broached from a geo-political perspective. However, at that time, other categories of ideas were no less relevant, for example, the ideas of eugenics and race. The two concepts were issues included in Hungarys dossier, compiled to support Hungarys defending its own standpoint during the peace treaties of 1919-1920.

Historian Marius Turda teaches the History of medicine at Oxford Brookes University. Dr Turda is the author of an appreciable number of books and research articles on eugenics and race. Marius Turda detailed the concepts of eugenics and race underpinning the Hungarian standpoint.

    Marius Turda.:

“The Hungarian eugenics and racial thought was quite advanced ahead of World War One. Many prominent Hungarian politicians as well as those who somehow contributed to the talks of the Peace Congress were noted eugenicists. They had their own contribution as to what Hungary had to offer, race-wise, for the stability in the region, as to why eugenics was important for the survival of the Hungarian nation in the region, demographically, culturally, as well as economically. The entire discussion they initiated revolved around a couple of key topics, in the hopes that they will persuade the Great Powers to keep Hungarys territorial integrity intact.”

The eugenic and racial ideas emerged in the second half of the 19th century. Those ideas became very popular in the USA, Great Britain, Germany, France and in the Central-European area. At that time, a widely-circulated concept was that of “biopolitics”, pertaining to political thought based on biological principles. Dr Marius Turda has detailed how the Hungarian dossier attempted to raise the winning powers awareness, resorting to the eugenic and racial reasoning.

    Marius Turda:

“Count Teleki Pal, one of the main promoters of the eugenic trend, and president of the Hungarian Society for Racial Hygiene and the Study of Population, dispatched letters to presidents of Eugenics societies worldwide, as well as to the president of the British Eugenics Society, Leonard Darwin, Charles Darwins son. Telekis attempted reasoning focused on why the British Eugenics Society had to promote and fight for the preservation of Hungarys national integrity. From one empire to the next, stated Teleki, if we take Transylvania into account, the entire class of intellectuals is Hungarian. But if we target the intellectual class in Transylvania and have it relocated, two things are going to happen. First off, Transylvania will be deprived of a cultural, political and economic elite in its own right. Secondly, the city of Budapest and Hungary will be overpopulated, and that will also trigger a lodging and living space crisis. “.

The confrontation between the Hungarian and Romanian dossiers was uncompromisingly sorted out in favour of the population majority claim, promoted by Romania. According to Marius Turda, we cannot speak about a failure of the eugenic claim, but rather about the whole range of ideas being interpreted and included in one single decision.

    Marius Turda:

“The demographic superiority claim in Transylvania was much more important than the fact that the eugenic outcome of the dismantling of the Hungarian state would have had its aftermath. The fact that the Romanians were the majority population in Transylvania counted more during the political talks than what would happen to Transylvania after it became part of Romania, what they would lose, culturally, and how many of the biological qualities were to be lost, of the population living there. We cannot speak about a failure, but about prioritising and about which of the two levels of reasoning would prevail in the confrontation. The ethnographic talks on Transylvania during the peace treaties were to a great extent based on the claim that the Romanians were the majority population. The racial failure was rather more visible here. All those claims several Hungarian racists put forward, instead of pursuing the path of ethnic symbiosis and mutual interest, they opted for a much more categorical separation of the populations.”

Marius Turda puzzled us out as to whether Romania counteracted Hungarys claims also resorting to a eugenic and racial reasoning.

    Marius Turda:

“Romania did not have a eugenic reasoning in its own right, but it did have a racial, ethnographic and demographic set of arguments, which mattered a lot. The entire debate on ethnic groups and the importance of a certain ethnic group in a region had been initiated by people who were very well-read in physical anthropology. The kept themselves abreast of the race debates, were speaking about such thinkers as Aurel C. Popovici and Alexandru Vaida-Voevod, debates related to the racial qualities of a certain ethnic group. All those ideas greatly mattered, regarding the emergence of a certain opinion trend on the vitality of the Romanian nation in Transylvania, on its racial importance, even though the reasoning for all that was rather demographical. As for the eugenics claims like those put forwards by the Hungarian delegation, they did not exist as part of the Romanian delegations set of arguments or the Romanian campaigns abroad, carried to promote Transylvanias unification with Romania.”

The making of Greater Romania was something hard to come by, for all our being tempted to think otherwise. The confrontation was really strong, between the eugenic and racial set of arguments and those pertaining to the demographic majority criterium. Romanias set of arguments prevailed, since Romania was part of the alliance bringing together France, Great Britain and the USA.
