    Monica Niculescu and Fanny Stollar on Thursday advanced to the women’s doubles finals as part of the WTA 250 tennis tournament in Tasmania’s Hobart, an event with 275,000 USD in prize money all told. On Thursday, the Romanian-Hungarian pair in the quarterfinals defeated the second-seeded Norwegian Japanese pair made of Ulrikke Eikeri and Makoto Ninomiya, 6-1, 7-6. Monica and Fanny play straight in the finals as their scheduled semi-finals opponents, pulled out of competition. They were third-seeded US player Sofia Kenin and Magda Linette of Poland.

    Romanian motorcyclist Emanuel Gyenes on Wednesday succeeded the best result so far at the ongoing edition of the Dakar Rally. In the fourth leg of the moto class, Gyenes came in 22nd, arriving 25 minutes and 21 seconds later than the winner, Australia’s Daniel Sanders. Also, Gyenes is 12th-placed according to Rally 2 ranking. Emanuel Gyenes is also the leader according to the ranking of pilots competing with no technical assistance.

    Romania’s national water polo team sustained yet another defeat in the second game as part of the World Cup in Otopeni, nearby Bucharest. In Division One’s Group C, on Wednesday Romania sustained a 12-16 defeat by Japan, being placed at the bottom of the table according to the final ranking. In Group A, Hungary are at the top of the table. Greece won Group B, while the United States, Group C. In Group D, Croatia emerged at the top of the table.

    Group winners have advanced straight to the quarterfinals alongside Japan, the best second-placed team. On Thursday, three other games are scheduled for the other places in the quarterfinals, as Spain takes on Serbia, France play Montenegro, while Romania goes against Georgia.

    In news from basketball, U-BT Cluj-Napoca on Wednesday sustained at 79-91 home defeat by Israeli opponents Hapoel Jerusalem, in a Group B confrontation as part of EuroCup men’s competition. Haopel thus took their revenge as in October 2024 in Bulgaria’s Samokov, U-BT Cluj Napoca grabbed a 81 – 73 win. According to Group B tables, Spain’s Valencia are at the top, with 12 wins and two defeats. Holders U-BT Cluj-Napoca are 5th-placed with seven wins and seven defeats. U-BT’s next scheduled fixture is this next week’s away game against Italian opponents of Umana Reyer of Venice.

    Predictions for the Paris Olympics

    We have 3 months left until the world’s top sports event, the summer Olympics, scheduled to take place in Paris between July 26 and August 11.

     

    Although overshadowed by a war that has reached its 3rd year in Ukraine and by a volatile situation in the Middle East, the Olympics stir well-deserved interest, including in terms of statistics.

     

    Experts have set out to produce a predicted medal table for the Paris Olympics, with the number of medals each country is expected to win. According to this ranking, released recently by Nielsen Gracenote, Romania is forecast to win 10 medals, of which two gold, three silver and five bronze ones. The country would thus come out 25th in the ranking by total number of medals.

     

    Should this projection come true, this would make Romania’s best performance in the past 5 editions of the summer Olympics, after the 9 medals won in Beijing 2008, 7 in London 2012 and 4 each in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

     

    At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Romania won a total of 19 medals. But all these pale in comparison to Romania’s exceptional performance at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. With 53 medals (20 gold, 16 silver, and 17 bronze) Romania ranked second in the nations’ table, after the US.

     

    According to the Gracenote predictions, the US team will dominate the Paris Game as well, with a forecast 123 medals, followed by China, with 89 medals and the UK with 66. The host country, France, is expected to win 55 medals. In a standing taking into account gold medals only, France ranks 3rd, after the US and China. While Russia and Belarus will not take part in the competitions, for obvious reasons, Ukraine is predicted to take home 13 medals.

     

    The predicted medal table is a projection based on team and individual results in the previous Olympic Games, the World Championships and the World Cups, to establish the most likely medal winners from each country.

     

    Romania so far has 80 athletes qualified for the Paris Games, in events including athletics, swimming, boxing, rowing, kayaking, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, water polo, table tennis, wrestling and weightlifting.

     

    Octavian Morariu, a member of the International Olympic Committee and of the Romanian Executive Olympic and Sports Committee, says the 10-medal forecast for Romania may be realistic, but should not be taken for granted. “There are events where we have really good chances to win medals, for instance rowing, swimming, weightlifting, wrestling, canoeing. So this is what we should pin our hopes on, at the Paris Olympics,” Morariu said. He argued that these are the events in which Romanians have had good results lately and which are an indication of what could be achieved this summer. (AMP)

    Bucharest – the most affordable European capital to live in, study finds

    A new research looked at Europe’s capital cities, ranking them based on the affordability of 8 living costs, including rent, utilities and travel. Bucharest was found to be the most affordable European capital to live in.

     

     

    Personal finance experts at Finansvalp gathered data from the cost-of-living website Numbeo to create their affordability index, which included every European capital city, scored out of 100 based on 8 factors.

     

     

    The factors in the index include the monthly cost of renting a one-bedroom apartment outside the city centre, electricity and water bills, monthly mobile phone and broadband plans, fitness club fees, a travel pass and the price of a meal out for two. These expenses were measured against the average monthly net salary for a person living in each city.

     

     

    In light of these factors, Bucharest, Romania, was found to be the most affordable European capital city to live in, scoring 59.69 out of 100. Next in the list come Chisinau and San Marino.

     

     

    The study found that residents in Bucharest pay around 34% of their monthly incomes (on average £1,098.50 after tax) on accommodation. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment outside of the city centre was found to be £375.15.

     

     

    Another £164.57 a month is spent on household bills and £120.69 goes on lifestyle expenses, such as dining out, fitness and travel passes. This means residents are left with around £438.09 each month in disposable income.

     

     

    The second most affordable capital city in Europe is Chisinau, Moldova, scoring 56.40 out of 100,  followed by San Marino, with a score of 54.53 out of 100.

    At the opposite pole, the study revealed that the most expensive European capital to live in is London, England, which scored 41.04 out of 100. Average incomes in the English capital are around £4,169.68 after tax, with nearly half of that (49.5%) going on rent (£2,064.91 for a one-bedroom apartment).

     

     

    The second-costliest capital city is Monte Carlo, Monaco, with a score of 41.23 out of 100, while Dublin, Ireland, which scored 42.24 out of 100, comes third.

     

     

    Speaking on the findings, Olle Pettersson, CEO of Finansvalp, said:

     

     

    “Living in Europe’s capital cities can be a financial tightrope, requiring strategic budgeting and savvy decision-making to thrive in a cosmopolitan lifestyle.

    Corruption Perceptions Index 2023

    The Corruption Perceptions Index reflects how independent and business experts perceive corruption in the public sector in 180 states and territories. In a ranking drawn up by Transparency International by awarding points, from 0 to 100, where zero means very corrupt and 100 not corrupt at all, the continental and world champions are three Nordic states, Denmark, Finland and Norway, joined by New Zealand. Romania is ranked only on 63rd position, the same as last year. With 46 points, Romania is still among the European Union countries with the poorest results regarding the implementation of anti-corruption measures, which reflects significant deficiencies regarding the rule of law. Romania’s neighbors in the ranking and also geographically, Bulgaria and Hungary have 45 and 42 points respectively, being at the bottom of the ranking in terms of integrity. According to Transparency International, most states have made no progress at all or have made minimal progress in combating corruption in the public sector.



    It’s essential to have independent, transparent, and resourceful legal authorities and institutions to be able to keep corruption under control, the organization believes. In many countries, including Romania, there is still a big gap between the provisions of the laws and the way in which they are implemented, Transparency International noted. Therefore, constant actions and measures are necessary to ensure both the improvement of anti-corruption mechanisms and the strengthening of integrity. For Romania, Transparency Internationals recommendations include updating the legislation in the field of public integrity, to bridge the gaps and correct legislative inconsistencies and improve the clarity of regulation in this area. The organization also recommends improving organizational and decision-making transparency, including through effective public consultations and easy access to information of public interest, the standardization and clarification of administrative procedures by adopting the Code of Administrative Procedure.



    Also in the case of Romania, it would be necessary to adopt legislation that should clarify the status, career and efficiency of public administration employees, as well as the use of Integrity Pacts as a monitoring tool for public procurement, especially for procurement procedures and contracts with high risks for the occurrence of irregularities, integrity incidents or fraud. Transparency International reiterates the fact that there is a need for a constant involvement of all representatives of society, from the political class and institutions to the private environment and citizens, each having their own role and responsibility in strengthening public integrity. Transparency International recalls that it contributed to the establishment or consolidation of institutions with a major role in combating corruption and developed and implemented ethics and integrity standards for the public sector and the business environment.     Romania now boasts three athletes among the world’s first 100 tennis
    players. The best ranking at present is Sorana Cirstea, currently on the 26th
    position, followed by Ana Bogdan who comes 61st and Irina Begu on
    the 66th position. Sorana has gone down a notch since last week and
    Irina five whereas Bogdan has gone up ten positions thanks to her winning of
    the WTA 125 tournament in Parma, a performance, which also brought her the
    Athlete of the Week title granted weekly to the best Romanian performance by
    our radio station.




    Ana Bogdan last year stopped in the semifinals of the Parma Ladies Open
    but this edition was second-seeded. She defeated Spanish Marina Bassols Ribera
    in the first round 6-1, 7-5, then Ukrainian Katarina Zavatska in three sets,
    4-6, 6-2, 6-4. She also clinched a three-set win against her compatriot
    Jaqueline Cristian 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 in the quarter-finals. In the semifinals, the
    Romanian managed to outperform Hungarian challenger Anna Bondar 6-3, 6-4 in a match
    that lasted two hours and 40 minutes, the longest she played in Parma. The
    Romanian eventually managed to secure a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Anna Karolina
    Schmiedlova of Slovakia in the finals.




    Ana Bogdan was born on November 25th 1992 in Sinaia, southern
    Romania, and turned professional in 2007. Two years later she went second in
    the world junior ranking. She made constant headway in the WTA ranking until
    2008. She stayed around the 100th position for a while but in 2022
    and 2023 she succeeded in getting higher into the ranking. In July this year
    she occupied the 39th position, the best in her career so far and
    she’s still waiting for her first WTA title. She has so far achieved three WTA
    125 titles, in Iasi in 2022 and 2023 and now in Parma.

    it has been another dismal reason for a disappointment. Our national squad came
    in 12th according to the final rankings. Notwithstanding, our lineup’s
    run was definitely above par and the team measured up to the performance of
    Europe’s top teams. The fixture against Montenegro was the cliffhanger, since
    Romania was defeated by the narrowest of margins, 34-35, with the refereeing being
    hostile to the Romanians. Had they won, Florentin Pera’ s trainees could have
    retained their chances to advance to the semifinals. Romania had top-notch
    handballers in the lineup and showed a remarkable resolve to push themselves forward in the competition.
    Cristina Neagu and Eliza Buceschi literally shone on the court, while the Ukrainian-born
    goal keeper Yulia Dumanska was in top shape. The Romanian lineup could therefore
    have claimed a medal quite all right.


    Sports pundits and the fans have spoken
    highly of the Romanian team’s run. Inside-left Cristina Neagu has been included
    in the competition’s All-star team. We recall Neagu had previously won the title,
    in 2010, 2012 and 2014. At the EHF EURO 2022, Cristina Neagu scored 39 goals, reaching
    303 all told, scored in the past editions of European championships. It is an
    all-time record, and a nec plus ultra as compared to Icelandic handball player Gudjón
    Valur Sigurdsson’s record, made of 288 goals scored in the European Championships
    he took part in.


    Reason enough for Radio Romania International to designate Cristina Neagu the Athlete
    of the week.

    Cristian turned pro, playing for
    Rulmentul Brașov, then being signed up by Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea. In 2010, with Oltchim, Cristina Neagu reached as far as the
    Champions League finals. When Oltchim was disbanded, Neagu played for Buducnost
    Podgorica, a team with which she won the Champions League in 2015. She has been
    playing for CSM Bucharest since 2017. In 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2018, the IHF
    designated Neagu the world’s best handballer. Cristina thus became the world’s only

    Feinstaub in Europas Städten: Das Ranking der Luftverschmutzung

    Der neueste Bericht der Europäischen Umweltagentur über die Luftqualität in Städten mit mehr als 100 000 Einwohnern zeigt, dass 127 Städte eine gute Luftqualität haben. Bei Feinstaub – PM 2,5 – dem Schadstoff mit der größten gesundheitlichen Auswirkung in Bezug auf vorzeitige Todesfälle und Krankheiten, finden sich die niedrigsten Konzentrationen in der Stadt Umea in Schweden und der Stadt Tampere in Finnland. Die Europäische Umweltagentur bewertete die PM 2,5-Feinstaubbelastung in 323 Städten in 26 EU-Ländern sowie in Island, Norwegen und der Schweiz, bezog aber aufgrund fehlender Vergleichsdaten nicht alle europäischen Städte ein. An der Spitze des Rankings wurden 127 Städte mit guter Luftqualität eingestuft, 123 hatten eine mäßige Verschmutzung und 73 wurden als schlecht oder sehr schlecht eingestuft.



    Mehrere rumänische Städte wurden als mäßig verschmutzt im Ranking eingestuft. Zu dieser Kategorie gehören die (rumänischen) Städte Botoșani, Platz 223, Timișoara, Platz 267 und Brașov, Platz 273. In den Top 20 der Städte mit der saubersten Luft in Europa befinden sich vier Hauptstädte: Tallinn (Estland), Stockholm (Schweden), Helsinki (Finnland) und Oslo (Norwegen), während Bukarest mit einer mäßigen Luftverschmutzung auf Platz 263 liegt, zusammen mit anderen Hauptstädten wie Budapest (Ungarn), Zagreb (Kroatien), Ljubljana (Slowenien) und Warschau (Polen). Zu den von der Europäischen Umweltagentur empfohlenen Maßnahmen zur Verringerung der Luftverschmutzung gehören der Umstieg auf umweltfreundlichere öffentliche Verkehrsmittel, sauberere Brennstoffe für die Beheizung von Wohngebäuden und die Isolierung von Gebäuden sowie die Verringerung der Verschmutzung durch Industrie-, Bau- und Abbrucharbeiten.



    Aber die Reduzierung der Verschmutzung beginnt mit der Überwachung der Luftqualität. Vor einigen Tagen hat die rumänische Vereinigung Smart City ein Programm, City Air, ins Leben gerufen, das darauf abzielt, die Luftqualität durch die Installation von 30 Sensoren innerhalb und außerhalb von Schulen in Bukarest genauer zu überwachen, und das nun landesweit ausgeweitet wird. Andererseits setzt das Rathaus sein Programm zur Modernisierung des Fuhrparks der öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel fort, mit ähnlichen Initiativen in anderen rumänischen Großstädten. Um die Umweltverschmutzung im zentralen Bereich von Bukarest, wo der Autoverkehr sehr hoch ist, zu reduzieren, werden außerdem vom 29. Mai bis zum 17. Oktober jedes Wochenende 34 Straßen als Fußgängerzonen ausgewiesen. Das Projekt Open Streets zielt darauf ab, die Luftverschmutzung zu reduzieren, indem fast 12 km Straßen jeden Samstag und Sonntag zwischen 11.00 und 22.00 Uhr zur Fußgängerzone gemacht werden.



    Weitere Initiativen zur Reduzierung der Luftverschmutzung gibt es in Rumäniens Großstädten. So werden im Rahmen der Kampagne Eco Graffiti / Rebels with a Cause in einigen der belebtesten Gegenden der rumänischen Hauptstadt luftreinigende Wandbilder im Freien gemalt. Junge rumänische Künstler werden rund tausend Quadratmeter Wände in Kunstwerke verwandeln. Die Künstler werden umweltfreundliche Materialien verwenden: 75% Öko-Farbe, 25% Luftreinigungsfarbe, grünes Moos und solarbetriebene Lampen. Jedes Wandbild wird die Luftdurchlässigkeit von 4 ausgewachsenen Bäumen mit dichtem Blattwerk haben. Eine ähnliche Initiative wurde von der Stadtverwaltung Cluj ergriffen. Es handelt sich um ein intelligentes City Trees-System zur Reduzierung der Luftverschmutzung, das mit Luftqualitätssensoren und großen Ventilatoren ausgestattet ist, die verschmutzte Luft aufnehmen und gereinigte Luft abgeben. Die Luft wird durch moosbewachsene Platten gefiltert. Diese fangen den Staub aus der Atmosphäre auf und geben auch Sauerstoff ab.

    Die Europäische Kommission hat am Donnerstag empfohlen, alle Reisebeschränkungen innerhalb der EU und des Schengener Raumes beginnend mit dem 15. Juni aufzuheben. Die Au‎ßengrenzen der EU sollten, dieser nach, am 1. Juli für die Westbalkanstaaten geöffnet werden. Darüber entscheiden jedoch die Mitgliedstaaten.


    In Rumänien haben sich mehr als 21.100 Menschen mit dem neuen Coronavirus infiziert, die Zahl der Toten hat 1369 erreicht. Etwa 15.200 der Infizierten sind genesen. Von den im Ausland lebenden Rumänen haben sich etwa 3.300 infiziert, 114 sind an Covid-19 gestorben. Rumäniens Präsident Klaus Iohannis hat das Parlament aufgefordert, über die Verlängerung des am 15. Juni endenden Warnzustands zu entscheiden, da die Zahl der neuen Infektionsfälle nicht wesentlich zurückgegangen ist. Die politischen Fraktionen verhandeln gegenwärtig über die Verlängerung des Alarmzustands, da einige Parteien mit dem Vorschlag der liberalen Regierung nicht zufrieden sind.




    Die rumänische Regierung berät heute über die von den Behörden zum 15. Juni angekündigten Lockerungsma‎ßnahmen. Auf der heutigen Sitzung könnte auch die normative Akte zur Wiederankurbelung der Wirtschaft stehen.




    Die WHO hat davor gewarnt, dass die Pandemie noch nicht vorbei ist. Gleichzeitig zeigte es sich besorgt über die Situation in einigen Ländern, mit maroden Gesundheitssystemen. Der Exekutivdirektor des Gesundheitsnotfallprogramms, Mike Ryan, hat vor den Auswirkungen des neuen Virus während des Winters auf der Südhalbkugel gewarnt und erklärt, die Entwicklung sei unmöglich vorherzusagen. In den USA hat die Zahl der Kontaminationsfälle, einem neuen Bericht der Johns Hopkins Universität zufolge, die zwei Millionen-Grenze überschritten. Mehr als 112 Tausend Amerikaner sind an Covid-19 gestorben. Gemessen an der Zahl der Infektionen stehen die USA weltweit an erster Stelle, gefolgt von Brasilien, Russland und dem Vereinigten Königreich. Im EU-Raum, wo allein in vier Ländern — Gro‎ßbritannien, Italien, Frankreich und Spanien – 130 000 Tote gemeldet wurden, geht die Zahl der Neuansteckungen zurück, gleichzeitig werden die Entspannungsma‎ßnahmen ausgeweitet. Frankreich kündigte an den Ausnahmezustand nicht über den 10. Juli hinaus zu verlängern.




    Laut der letzten Eurobarometer-Umfrage glauben sechs von zehn Rumänen, dass ihr Alltag von Korruption beeinträchtigt ist. Die Umfrage wurde im Dezember 2019 auf EU-Ebene durchgeführt und am Mittwoch veröffentlicht. Im Vergleich zu 2017 ist die Zahl um 4 % zurückgegangen, aber immer noch doppelt so hoch wie der europäische Durchschnitt. Acht von zehn Rumänen glauben, dass Korruption in Rumänien ein weit verbreitetes Phänomen ist. Laut der Umfrage ist die Korruption für eine beträchtliche europäische Mehrheit, 69 %, inakzeptabel. Die höchste Ablehnungsrate wurde in Portugal (88 %) und die niedrigste in Ungarn (36 %) verzeichnet. Etwa 48 % der Rumänen halten Korruption für inakzeptabel.




    Die Universität Bukarest und die “Babes Bolyai“-Universität Cluj (Klausenburg) sind die einzigen Hochschuleinrichtungen in Rumänien, die im World University Rankings 2020 aufgeführt sind. Die Rankings werden nach einer Analyse der Leistung von mehr als 1000 Universitäten weltweit erstellt, wobei bestimmte Kriterien berücksichtigt werden: akademische Reputation, Reputation als Arbeitgeber, die Anzahl der Studenten, die Anzahl der Zitate für Fakultäten, internationale Fakultäten und internationale Studenten.




    In den USA wurden zwei Christopher-Kolumbus-Statuen bei Protesten zerstört, die durch den Tod von George Floyd in Boston und Richmond ausgelöst wurden. Laut France Presse wird Kolumbus, der Entdecker Amerikas, als Urheber des Genozids an den amerikanischen Ureinwohnern angesehen.     PARLIAMENT The Parliament of Romania is today debating and voting on the second no-confidence motion against the Government formed by the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, and headed by Viorica Dăncila. According to the Opposition, the current Cabinet is a threat to Romanias national interests, to its economic and political stability. The authors of the motion criticise the laws on the judiciary and claim the Prime Minister failed to comply with the governing programme undertaken at the start of her term. In reply, the PM claimed that the alternative the Opposition offers to citizens is to suspend income increases and even to slash salaries and pensions. Viorica Dancila also defended the justice laws, emphasising that they were endorsed by Parliament, rather than by an emergency decree as it was the case with the Ciolos Cabinet. Initiated by the National Liberal Party, the Save Romania Union, the Peoples Movement Party and unaffiliated MPs, the document was signed by 163 MPs, but needs 233 votes in order to pass. Yesterday the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania announced that its MPs would attend the meeting, but would abstain from voting.



    STOCK EXCHANGE The Association of Capital Market Professionals says the prospective endorsement of a recent government decree on fiscal and budgetary measures is the most brutal and irrational attack against the Romanian capital market since its re-establishment in 1995. The Bucharest Stock Exchange opened on a slight increase today, but plunged back down, after experiencing its worst day so far on Wednesday. Substantial losses were reported by banks and energy and utilities companies, after on Tuesday the Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici announced that by the end of the year a government decree would be passed introducing certain fiscal and budgetary measures. These include a so-called “tax on greed charged on banking revenues, and a package concerning energy companies, such as a 3% of turnover contribution, a cap on natural gas prices and electricity price control. The business community in Romania warned against the negative effects of the new taxes announced by the Government for 2019. President Klaus Iohannis urged the Cabinet to reconsider the decree, to negotiate it with employers and trade unions and to endorse a more sustainable version after thorough analysis and review.



    EU The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, receives in Bucharest on Friday the Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurz, whose country currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council. Romania will symbolically take over the presidency of the EU Council, which it will hold as of January 1. The 2 officials will discuss the priorities on the European agenda, such as the future of the Union, the EU budget after 2020, Brexit, and the elections for the European Parliament. On Wednesday in a meeting with the EU ambassadors to Bucharest, President Klaus Iohannis said Romanias goal during its presidency of the EU Council is to begin as soon as possible the negotiations on the future relations between the Union and Britain, if the withdrawal agreement is ratified by London and approved by the European Parliament. Iohannis also said that Romania supports a stronger European Union, which is closer to its citizens and able to guarantee their security and prosperity. He also emphasised the importance of the informal meeting of European leaders in Sibiu on May 9, 2019, when the EU strategic agenda for 2019-2024 will be discussed.



    JUDICIARY Romanias supreme court suspended the serving of prison sentences received by several high-level officials under corruption charges. Among them are the former chief of the anti-terrorism and anti-mafia directorate Alina Bica, who requested asylum in Costa Rica, the former head of the tax authority, Serban Pop, and former Social Democratic ministers and MPs Dan Şova and Constantin Niţă. They have been released, until final rulings are passed on their appeals. The argument put forth for the suspension of their sentences was that the membership of the 5-judge panels passing the rulings had not been correct. The supreme court held drawing of lots sessions for the 5-judge panels 3 times this year, when the Law on the organisation of courts was modified, further to a Constitutional Court decision, at the request of the Government and following an objection by the Social Democratic Party president Liviu Dragnea, who is tried for corruption at the Bucharest Court of Appeals.



    COMMEMORATION Sirens sounded for 3 minutes in Timisoara today, in memory of the day of December 20, 1989, when Timisoara was proclaimed the first city free from communism in Romania. The largest plants went on strike back then, and workers gathered in the city centre, alongside tens of thousands of other locals. The Army withdrew from streets, the protesters who had been arrested were released, and the peoples demands were read out from the famous Opera House balcony. Also on December 20, the first revolutionary committee, called The Romanian Democratic Front, was set up. Members of the families of the Timisoara victims are traveling to Bucharest today to commemorate one of the most important events in modern Romanian history. They will arrive at the place where the bodies of 44 Timisoara heroes, shot dead on December 17, were cremated. The uprising that started in Timisoara spread on December 21 to Bucharest and other Romanian cities. Over 1,000 people died and some 3,000 others were wounded in the shootings in Romania, the only Eastern Bloc country where the communist regime was toppled violently and where the communist leaders were executed.



    FOOTBALL Romanias national football team will end the year on the 24th position in the ranking that FIFA made public on Thursday. Romania started the year on the 40th place. This years 24th place is the best ranking Romanias football team has held since 2016. The teams future opponents in the EURO 2020 qualifiers are Spain, in 9th place, Sweden – 14, Norway – 46, Faeroe – 98, and Malta – 182.

    Unsere heutige Reise geht wieder einmal Nach Braşov (dt. Kronstadt). Wie Sie sicherlich schon wissen, liegt Braşov in der Mitte Rumäniens. Die siebenbürgische Stadt zieht Jahr für Jahr immer mehr Reisende an — sowohl wanderlustige, wie auch kulturinteressierte Touristen. Die Stadt Făgăraş (dt. Fogarasch) liegt im Landkreis Braşov. Auch die Zahl der Touristen, die Făgăraş besuchen, hat in letzter Zeit konstant zugelegt. Vor allem seit dem die Fogarascher Burg renoviert wurde. Derzeit nimmt sie einen wohl verdienten Platz in internationalen Ranglisten ein. 2016 besuchten mehr als 130.000 Touristen die Burg in Fogarasch. Die Verwalter der Burg hoffen, dass die im Jahr 2016 verzeichnete Rekordzahl 2017 übertroffen wird.



    Horia Pirău arbeitet als Museologe in der Burg Fogarasch. Er erzählt den Besuchern, sie hätten eine Festung betreten, die niemals erobert worden sei:



    Die Burg wurde 26 Mal belagert, doch hat sie niemals ihre Tore aufgemacht. Ich wünsche mir, dass uns so viele Touristen wie möglich besuchen, denn die Burg ist sehr schön. Die Architektur entspricht dem italienischen Renaissance-Baustil. Die Struktur und Form der Fogarascher Burg entsprechen nicht dem Baustil herkömmlicher transsilvanischer Burgen. Siebenbürgische Festungen wurden üblicherweise in Sternform, also im Vauban-Stil, gebaut. Für die Burg Fogarasch wurde dagegen die Form eines unregelmä‎ßigen Vierecks vorgezogen. An der nordöstlichen Seite, der längsten Seite der Burg, befindet sich der Gefängnisturm. Dieser bot eine hervorragende Rundumsicht. Der Thronsaal ist ebenfalls prächtig. Der Saal liegt im zweiten Stock der Burg und wurde vor knapp drei Jahren restauriert. Mir reichen die Worte nicht, um seine Schönheit zu beschreiben. Wie aus dem Namen abgeleitet werden kann, befindet sich in diesem Saal ein Thron sowie das Wappen der Stadt Fogarasch — nämlich zwei Fische. Dann gibt es noch den Saal des Siebenbürgischen Landtags. Die Möbel in diesem Saal stammen aus dem 17. Jahrhundert. Es sind nachgestellte Möbelstücke. Man darf nicht vergessen, dass die Burg in den Jahren 1948–1962 als Gefängnis verwendet wurde. Viele Gegner des kommunistischen Regimes wurden hier eingesperrt. Leider gingen damit auch viele Gegenstände verloren.“




    Die Fogarascher Burg soll dieses Jahr mit europäischen Mittel erneut restauriert werden. Die Burgverwaltung erhält 4,9 Millionen Euro in Form von Fördergeldern. Das Geld soll unter anderem zur Einrichtung von ständigen kunsthandwerklichen Werkstätten eingesetzt werden. Geplant ist auch die Konstruktion zweier beweglicher Brücken sowie die Herrichtung des ehemaligen Verteidigungsgrabens rundum die Burg. Und dennoch: Wie schaffte es die Burg bis auf den 2. Platz in einem europäischen Ranking? Dazu der Museologe Horia Pirău:



    Einige Journalisten von der Huffington Post, der berühmten US-Publikation, haben vor zwei Jahren eine Reise durch Rumänien unternommen. Ihre Reise ging auch durch Siebenbürgen. Entlang ihrer Route haben sie auch in Fogarasch Halt gemacht. Sie besuchten unsere Burg, ohne aber ihre Identität zu enthüllen. Wir haben sie so behandelt wie auch alle anderen Touristen. Sie baten uns, ein paar Bilder mit einer Drone aufnehmen zu dürfen. Wir sagten selbstverständlich zu. Am Ende ihres Besuches sagten sie uns, wir werden von ihnen eine E-Mail bekommen. Sie hätten uns eine Überraschung vorbereitet. Wir hatten keine Ahnung, dass die Journalisten eine Rangliste der 10 schönsten Burgen und Schlösser in Europa aufgestellt hatten. Unsere Burg landete auf den 2. Platz. Der erste Platz wurde von einem Schloss in Deutschland eingenommen.“




    Touristen, die gerne Burgen und Schlösser besichtigen, wissen nun, dass die Fogarascher Burg auf keinen Fall verpasst werden darf. Vor Ort werden ihnen alle Informationen, die sie brauchen, zur Verfügung gestellt, so Horia Pirău:



    Wir stellen den Touristen Informationen auf Englisch, Französisch und Deutsch zur Verfügung. Werbe- und Informationsmaterial gibt es au‎ßerdem auch auf Ungarisch. Künftig wollen wir uns auch auf Italienisch und Spanisch vorstellen. Manche Touristen besuchen uns alle Jahre wieder. Einigen von ihnen bieten wir mittlerweile kostenlosen Eintritt. Dass unsere Burg so aussieht wie heute, verdanken wir zum Teil unseren Besuchern. Das Geld, das wir für den Eintritt verlangen, wird gezielt für Restaurierungsarbeiten sowie zur Erhaltung der historischen Einrichtung ausgegeben.“




    Im August findet das Burgfest statt — ein mittelalterliches Fest, dass drei Tage anhält. Auch an Wochenenden bereitet die Burg Fogarasch seinen Gästen Überraschungen. Dazu findet jeden Tag zwischen 12 und 12.30 Uhr die feierliche Ablösung der Wachen statt.

    Drei Jahre ist es her, dass Irina Begu eine Turnierwoche unbesiegt beenden konnte. Und jetzt war es wieder soweit: Die 25-Jährige gewann das WTA-Turnier im südkoreanischen Seoul mit einer überzeugenden Leistung im Endspiel gegen die Weißrussin Aljaksandra Sasnowitsch. Nach einer Stunde und knapp 20 Minuten riss Begu die Arme in die Höhe, sie hatte mit 6:3 und 6:1 die Partie deutlich zu ihren Gunsten entschieden.



    Das Finale in Seoul hatte mit drei Breaks in Folge begonnen. Danach gelang es der Rumänin ihren Aufschlag zum 3:1 durchzubringen. Auch wenn sich die 21-jährige Sasnowitsch anschließend zurückmelden konnte und zum 3:3 ausglich, war Begus Überlegenheit immer mehr zu spüren. Die 29. der Weltrangliste ließ sofort ein Break folgen und einige Minuten später hatte sie den ersten Satz mit 6:3 in trockenen Tüchern. Die Bukaresterin entschied vor allem die wichtigen Punkte in einer relativ ausgeglichenen Partie für sich.



    Und das sollte auch in den kommenden fünf Spielen die Regel darstellen: Begu wehrte die zwei Breakchancen ihrer Gegnerin gleich im ersten Spiel des zweiten Durchgangs ab. Anschließend holte sie das erste Break, brachte ihren Aufschlag mühelos durch und gewann sogar noch das zweites Break hintereinander. Beim Stande von 4:0 aus ihrer Sicht war das Endspiel praktisch entschieden. Im Vergleich zu den Partien zuvor, in denen scheinbar einfache Spielsituationen sich aus ihrer Sicht doch kompliziert gestalteten, wusste Begu hier, das Tempo auf hohem Niveau zu halten. Auch zum Schluss wehrte sie noch eine Breakchance von Sasnowitsch ab um das achte Spiel in Folge mitzunehmen. Augenblicke später hatte die aktuelle Nummer 2. im rumänischen Damentennis ihren zweiten Turniersieg eingefahren.



    Vor drei Jahren hatte die damals 22-Jährige im usbekischen Taschkent ihr erstes Profiturnier gewonnen. Angesichts der Fortschritte in Irina Begus Spiel in den vergangenen Jahren, eine doch zu lange Zeit, wie das Tennisblog treizecizero.ro feststellt. Ihr Geheimnis in Seoul sei es gewesen ruhig zu bleiben und die Gegnerin möglichst lange laufen zu lassen“, verriet die strahlende Gewinnerin auf der Pressekonferenz nach dem Finale. Sie habe zudem immer die Linien und die passende Tiefe gesucht. Dazu habe sie in den wichtigen Momenten richtige Entscheidungen getroffen. Nicht in jedem Spiel habe sie dominiert, allerdings habe sie wenn es darauf ankam gut gespielt, lautete die nüchterne Analyse Begus.



    Mit dem Sieg in der südkoreanischen Hauptstadt krönte die Spielerin ein Jahr der Premieren und des langsamen Aufstiegs. 2014 hatte Irina noch harte Arbeit in den unteren Spieletagen der Tenniswelt leisten müssen. Sie hatte mit Teilnahmen an ITF-Turnieren begonnen und das Jahr mit einem Endspiel bei einem Turnier der Kategorie Premier in Moskau abgeschlossen.



    Und in diesem Jahr schaffte sie den lang erwarteten Durchbruch bei Grand-Slam-Turnieren und Veranstaltungen der Kategorie Premier Mandatory. Schrit für Schritt ließ Begu bis dato unbewältigte Hindernisse hinter sich. Sie lieferte sich ausgeglichene Kämpfe mit den Spitzenspielerinnen, erreichte bei den Australian Open zum ersten Mal das Achtelfinale eines Grandslam-Turniers, zudem war sie zum ersten Mal in der dritten Runde der French Open und in Wimbledon und bestritt ihr erstes Viertelfinale bei einem Mandatory-Turnier. Dank ihres Erfolgs in Seoul hat sich Irina Begu um drei Plätze in den Rankings verbessert: Seit Montag belegt sie Platz 26. der Weltrangliste – ebenfalls eine Bestmarke in ihrer Karriere.

    Alin Badea (de 25 años) e Iulian Teodosiu (de 18 años), dos rumanos debutantes en un mundial de esgrima, han traido una medalla de plata para el equipo del entrenador Mihai Covaliu, que también incluyó a Tiberiu Dolniceanu y Ciprian Galatanu.

    Los dos fueron descubiertos y promovidos en el club CSS Slobozia por Mihaita Marin (de 40 años), quien ahora entrena en Singapur.

    Del CM 2013 en Budapest, los tricolores regresaron con tres medallas: plata en la prueba por equipos e individual masculino (para Tibi Dolniceanu) y bronce para el equipo femenino (Ana Maria Branza, Simona Pop, Raluca Sbarcea y Maria Udrea, 33 a 28 en la final disputada contra Francia.

    Rumanía ha subido al número 14 en la jerarquía de los últimos cinco años de la clasificación de UEFA, ya que el 15 es el último lugar que garantiza dos equipos en La Champions y tres equipos en la Liga Europa , a partir de la temporada 2015-2016 .

    Gracias a la evolución espectacular de los equipos rumanos que se han clasificado todos en el play-off, el Steaua en el de la Liga de Campeones y el Astra, el Pandurii y el Petrolul en la Liga Europa, después de 18 partidos sin conocer la derrota, Rumanía ocupa el primer lugar en el ránking de la UEFA de este año, con un coeficiente de 3,750.



    Rumanía enviará dos equipos a las rondas preliminares de La Champions y 3 equipos a la Liga Europa en la temporada 2015-2016, si se sitúa en esta temporada por encima del lugar 15 (inclusive).



    Para tener un equipo clasificado directamente a los grupos de la Liga de Campeones, Rumanía debe ocupar la posición 12 al final de esta temporada. Este objetivo es posible incluso si Rumanía ocupa el lugar 13, siempre que el trofeo es ganado por un equipo que se clasifica en la próxima edicion sobre la base de la clasificación en su campeonato interno.

    La tenista rumana Sorana Cirstea fue derrotada por la estadounidense Serena Williams, número uno del mundo, por 6-2, 6-0, el pasado domingo en la final del torneo WTA de Toronto (Canadá), dotado con premios totales de 2.369.000 dólares.


    Sorana disputó su tercera final en el circuito WTA, tras haber ganado en 2008 en Tashkent, y perdido en 2007, en Budapest.


    Para llegar a la final, Sorana Cirstea derrotó a la ucraniana Olga Savciuk , la danésa Carolina Wozniacki – número 10 del mundo, la serbia Jelena Jankovic – 16 WTA , la checa Petra Kvitova y la china Na Li (nr. 4 mundial. Sorana recibirá un cheque por 213.000 dólares y 620 puntos WTA.


    En los tres partidos que ha jugado hasta la fecha con Serena Williams, todos perdidos, Sorana no ha podido ganar más de tres games: 6-1, 6-2 para la estadounidense en 2012 en Stanford (en las semifinales) y 6-0 , 6-2 para Serena en Roland Garros este año, en los dieciseisavos de final.



    Baloncesto



    La selección masculina de baloncesto de Rumania derrotó a Bulgaria por 77-74 en un partido de las preliminares del Campeonato Europeo de 2015. Por ahora, en el ránking, Bulgaria ocupa el primer lugar con 5 puntos, seguida por Rumanía e Islandia con 4 y 3 puntos, respectivamente.


    Remo



    La tripulación femenina de 8 más 1 trajo la tercera medalla de oro para la delegación rumana en el Campeonato Mundial de Remo Académico Juvenil celebrado en Trakai, en Lituania. Gianina-Elena Beleagă, Andrea-Maria Sticea, Antonia Cerbu, Roxana Părăşcanu, Ana-Maria Boca, Elena Turta, Cristina-Georgiana Popescu, Denisa Tîlvescu şi Georgiana Danciu, es decir la tripulación rumana terminó primera superando a Alemania e Italia. Rumanía también ganó dos medallas de oro en la prueba de doble remo femenino y de cuatro sin timonel, así como dos de plata, en doble remo masculino y doble remo femenino sin timonel.
