Commissaire – Le président roumain, Klaus Iohannis, a

Diplomatie – La diplomatie roumaine condamne

The change of generations Romanian fencing has been going through fatally took its toll on Romanian fencing’s recent results at international
level. We recall that that the Romanian delegation had a zero-medal tally at
the European Championships held in Antalya, Turkey, in June. Little wonder then
that the expectations for the World Championships in Cairo were low. At the
event in Egypt, Romania had full teams for the men’s and women’s saber as well
as in women’s foil and women’s epee events. Also, two other fencers
participated in the men’s individual epee event. The set
target was for the respective team to be placed on one of the first six
positions at least in one single event. Sabre fencers were the favorites to meeting
the set target. We recall that at the European championships the team came in 5th,
while Răzvan Ursachi and Iulian Teodosiu had been 5th and 6th
placed, respectively, in the individual events.

Exceeding all expectations, Romanian fencers succeeded to win two bronze
medals, both in individual events. In the sabre event, Iulian Teodosiu stepped
onto the third step of the podium, while Maria Boldor came in 3rd in
the foil event. It was just expected from Teodosiu to succeed that. Iulian Teodosiu
had already won three medals in nations’ competitions, in 2013, when the team
won silver at the World Championships, in 2016, when the team won bronze, also
in the World Championships, and also in 2016, when the Romanians won another
bronze medal, this time in the European Championships. Foil fencer Maria Boldor used to have a constant and an apparently
unassuming position among the world’s top 100 fencers, being placed somewhere around
the 100th position. 26-year world Maria Boldor did not have exceptional
results on the record, although she had competed in a great number of events ever
since she was 17. However, her notable result in an individual event in Cairo earned Maria
Boldor the 19th place according to the world rankings. The Romanian
is also entitled to keeping her hopes high for the 2024 edition of the Olympic
    Games in Paris.

In Cairo, the Romanian teams’ run was utterly disappointing. In the men’s
sabre event, with Iulian Teodosiu and Răzvan Ursachi on the line-up, the
Romanians were defeated in the very first round and came in 17th
according to the final rankings. In women’s sabre, Romania was also defeated,
again in the very first round, by Kazakhstan, and came in 18th. In
the women’s foil event, with Maria Boldor fighting, the Romanians were
outclassed by Singapore, also in the very first round, coming in 20th
according to the final rankings. The women’s epee team was the only Romanian team to have lasted beyond the competition’s first round, when they defeated
Canada yet losing to Italy, the bronze medalists in Tokyo. In the 9-16
places tournament, Romania overpowered China, lost to Estonia and eventually
defeated Egypt, coming in 11th according to the final rankings. A disappointing
result, given that in 2016, the epee event earned Romania gold at the Olympic Games in
Rio, in the nations’ competition, and silver in the individual event, in Tokyo,
    in 2021.(EN)

  • End of year sport rankings

    End of year sport rankings

The year end is, in all fields, a good opportunity to take a moment and look back, at both accomplishments and failures, and to reward performers. It is the case in Romanian sports as well, where specialist federations as well as regional, local and club teams are drawing up their final standings for the year.

Designated the best Romanian footballer of the year is George Puscas, who currently plays for the British side Reading. He was one of the authors of Romanias qualification into the semi-finals of the European youth championship, and is one of the most efficient Romanian strikers playing abroad. In the same event that rewarded Puscas as the best player, namely the Romanian Football Gala, Razvan Lucescu was awarded the title of best Romanian coach of the year 2019. He won the Greek football championship and Cup trophies with his team, PAOK Thessaloniki, and then he moved to the Saudi side Al Hilal to win the Asian Champions League.

Florinel Coman, a striker for FCSB, tops the charts of the Romanian League I players, according to data made public by InStat, quoted by Agerpres news agency. InStat came up with an index that assesses football performances based on objective criteria, and according to which Florinel Coman, with 314 points, is followed by Constantin Budescu, playing for Astra Giurgiu, and by Adrian Paun of CFR Cluj, both with 307 points. The best score in this ranking is 401, for Barcelona star player Lionel Messi, who has recently been awarded the 6th golden shoe trophy in his career.

Sabre athlete Bianca Pascu, a member of Dinamo Bucharest club, was designated the best Romanian fencer of the year 2019. Her main accomplishment this year was the bronze medal won in the World Championships held in Budapest, Hungary, in July. In that competition, Bianca was the only member of the Romanian delegation to come home with a medal.

The Romanian-born Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu, number 5 in the world and winner of the 2019 US Open, was unanimously voted the Athlete of the Year in Canada by a panel of 30 sports journalists, in what counted as an absolute first for a tennis player.

The European Fencing Championships are underway in Novi Sad, Serbia. Romanian sabre fencer Bianca Pascu was outclassed by Russias Svetlana Seveleva in the quarterfinals, 15-12. We recall that in the qualifiers, Pascu had outperformed Spains Lucia Martin-Portugues and Olga Kharlan of Ukraine. Pascu walked away with bronze at the 2017 edition of the European Championships held in Tbilisi.

In the mens version of the sabre event, the Romanian Andrei Timoce was unable to move past the second round, having sustained a 15-11 defeat by Great Britains Harisson Nichols.

In the individual womens epee event, the Romanian Ana-Maria Popescu came in 6th. In the first round, Popescu defeated Alejandra Cisneros of Spain, 15-7. In the second round, Popescu outperformed Ksenia Panteleeva of Ukraine, 15-8. In the round of 16, Ana-Maria Popescu secured a 15-12 win against Italys Rossella Fiamingo. However, in the quarterfinals Popescu lost to Estonias Julia Beljajeva 9-15. We recall that in 2016 Popescu was an Olympic champion, as part of the Romanian team, in the nations competition.

Also in the individual womens epee event, Amalia Tătăran was 9th-placed, after being defeated in the round of 16 by Beljajeva, 10-15. Maria Udrea came in 10th, having lost the the round of 16 match to another Estonian fencer, Katrina Lehis, 6-15. Raluca Sbîrcia came in 35th.

In the individual womens foil event, representing Romania were four fencers: Mălina Călugăreanu, Maria Boldor, Anca Săveanu and Teodora Sîrbu. Romanias best result was provided by Anca Saveanu, who was 39th-placed in the final rankings. The other three fencers coached by Florin Gheorghe, Teodora Sirbu, Malina Calugareanu and Maria Boldor, were ranked 42nd, 44th and 47th, respectively.

In the individual mens sabre event, Tiberiu Dolniceanu came in 11th in the final rankings. The other three Romanian sabre fencers taking part in the event, Iulian Teodosiu, Alin Badea and George Dragomir, were 27th, 36th and 45th-placed, respectively.
