ENERGY On February 1st the government in Bucharest is
expected to endorse new measures aimed at capping electricity and gas prices.
The aforementioned measures will be promoted through an emergency ordinance to
be passed the next week at the latest. Romania’s Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca has
today held talks with energy suppliers who, according to government sources,
have agreed with the newly announced measures for subsidizing and capping
energy prices, pledging to rectify the bills initially issued. The head of the
Executive on Monday announced that following an agreement of the ruling
coalition made up of PNL, PSD and UDMR prices in gas and electricity would be
capped and the consumption limit extended.

COVID-19 Authorities in Romania have today announced 16,760 new Covid
infections, double the number of yesterday as well as 70 related fatalities. Bucharest
has today reached an infection rate of 6.15 cases per thousand and has been in
the red tier since January 12th. With 8 million people vaccinated
Romania still is the last but one in an EU ranking. Bulgaria is the country
with the lowest number of immunized people in the bloc.

TENNIS 14th-seeded tennis player Simona Halep has qualified for
the second round of Australian Open, the year’s first Grand Slam tournament
after a two-set win 6-4, 6-3 against Magdalena Frech of Poland. A former top
seed, Halep took one hour and 29 minutes to obtain the victory against the
Polish challenger. Five Romanian women players out of six have qualified for
the tournament’s second round. They are Simona Halep, Sorana Cirstea, Irina
Begu, Gabriela Ruse and Jaqueline Cristian. From the Romanian delegation only
Irina Bara was eliminated in the competition’s first round.

EUMaltese center-right MEP
Roberta Metsola was elected president of the European Parliament on Tuesday. Metsola,
who won 458 votes out of the total 616, had an absolute majority avoiding the
need for a second round of voting. A member of the European People’s Party,
Metsola succeeds Italian Social Democrat David Sassoli who died last week at
the age of 65. Sassoli was a politician and journalist very appreciated in
Italy, a supporter of the EU, who firmly campaigned for human rights observance
around the world, this is how Romanian MEP Eugen Tomac has described him. A
vehement critic of the abuses committed by Russian president Vladimir Putin, in
2021 Sassoli got interdiction to enter Russia in response to the EU sanctions
imposed to some Russian officials. Sassoli was also a supporter of the EU
integration efforts of the ex-soviet, Romanian-speaking republic of Moldova.

Covid en Roumanie – Plus de 8 800 nouveaux cas d’infection au virus SARS CoV 2 dépistés en 24 heures ont été rapportés aujourd’hui en Roumanie, soit un bilan double par rapport à celui d’hier. Le Groupe de communication stratégique a également rapporté 43 décès. 415 malades sont hospitalisés en réanimation. Le taux d’incidence des cas d’infection a également augmenté dans la Capitale pour se chiffrer à près de 3 cas par mille habitants. Jusqu’ici près de 8 millions de personnes se sont fait vacciner depuis le début de la campagne nationale de vaccination démarrée fin décembre 2020. Quelque 7,9 millions sont pleinement vaccinés et plus de 2,1 millions ont fait aussi la troisième dose de vaccin. Les autorités redoublent d’efforts pour identifier des espaces disponibles pour aménager des centres d’évaluation ambulatoire des malades Covid 19. Les spécialistes soulignent à nouveau qu’il était extrêmement important de réagir immédiatement après les premiers signes d’infection et les premières mesures devraient être prises au domicile du patient.

Covid dans le monde – De nouvelles restrictions sont entrées en vigueur aujourd’hui en Italie. Selon les nouvelles règles, le résultat négatif d’un test de dépistage du Covid n’assure plus à lui seul l’accès dans les transports, les bars et les restaurants. L’Italie qui se confronte à une propagation majeure du variant Omicron a rapporté plus de 100 000 cas d’infection en 24 heures. Selon le correspondent de la radio publique roumaine à Rome, la majorité des problèmes auxquels se confronte le pays sont dues aux citoyens non-vaccinées, selon les propos du premier ministre Mario Draghi. Israël a introduit de nouvelles règles gérant l’accès des clients dans les magasins et dans les supermarchés situés dans des centres commerciaux, où tous les personnels et les clients doivent porter des masques de protection. Et pourtant le nombre de nouveaux cas de Covid ne fait qu’augmenter, selon le correspondent de la Radio roumaine dans ce pays. Les Etats-Unis ont rapporté lundi 1,35 millions de nouveaux cas d’infection au virus SARS-Cov 2, selon un bilan fait par Reuters, soit le plus grand nombre de nouveaux cas rapportés dans le monde par un seul pays. En échange, en Inde, le nombre de nouveaux cas d’infection au coronavirus est à la baisse et s’est chiffré mardi à moins de 170 mille.

Sassoli – Le président Klaus Iohannis a transmis, mardi, un message de condoléances suite au décès du président du Parlement européen David Sassoli, soulignant que celui-ci avait été un ami de la Roumanie et un leader qui a lutté pour les valeurs et les principes européens. Le social-démocrate italien David Sassoli est décédé la nuit dernière à l’hôpital de la ville d’Aviano, où il avait été hospitalisé depuis le 26 décembre en raison d’une complication grave due a un dysfonctionnement du système immunitaire. Sassoli qui avant d’être politicien a eu une longue carrière de journaliste a été nommé président du législatif communautaire en juillet 2019. C’était la dernière semaine de son mandat, vu que mardi prochain le Parlement européen devrait élire un nouveau président. C’est pour la première fois dans l’histoire du Parlement européen que son président décède. Le premier vice-président devrait exercer les fonctions de président jusqu’à l’élection d’un successeur. En ce cas le premier vice-président est Roberta Metsola de la part du Parti populaire européen de Malte, qui était déjà favorite pour remporter ce poste dans le cadre du remaniement prévu pour la semaine prochaine à Strasbourg.

Négociations – Les Etats-Unis et la Russie ont décidé de poursuivre le dialogue, l’unique résultat notable des huit heures de pourparlers sur des thèmes sécuritaires qui ont eu lieu lundi à Genève en Suisse, note la presse européenne. La cheffe de la délégation américaine, la sous-secrétaire d’Etat Wendy Sherman a rejeté les garanties demandées par Moscou pour bloquer l’élargissement de l’OTAN. Nous ne permettront à personne de frapper à la politiques des portes ouvertes menée par l’OTAN qui a été toujours importante pour l’Alliance et nous n’allons pas adopter des décisions sur l’Ukraine sans l’Ukraine, sur l’Europe sans l’Europe et sur l’OTAN sans l’OTAN, a dit Wendy Sherman. La diplomate américaine a réaffirmé durant la réunion avec son homologue russe que l’invasion de l’Ukraine impliquerait des un coût énorme pour Moscou. Pour sa part, l’adjoint du ministre russe de l’extérieur, Sergey Ryabkov, a assure à nouveau que la Russie n’envisageait pas une attaque contre l’Ukraine, mais à souligné que le risque d’un conflit ne devrait pas être sous-estimé. Les pourparlers de Genève seront suivis cette semaine par des négociations Russie – OTAN à Bruxelles et une réunion de l’OSCE également sur le thème de l’Ukraine à Vienne.

Tennis – La joueuse roumaine de tennis, Gabriela Ruse s’est qualifiée mardi aux huitièmes de finale du tournoi WTA 500 à Sydney, après avoir disposé de la polonaise Magdalena French en trois sets. La Russie affrontera dans les huitièmes de finale l’estonienne Anett Kontaveit, quatrième favorite du tournoi. Une autre sportive roumaine est également qualifiée dans les huitièmes. Il s’agit de Jaqueline Cristian, qui rencontrera Barbora Krejcikova de République Tchèque, troisième favorite et championne en titre à Roland Garros.

Météo – Une alerte code jaune au vent fort jusqu’à demain matin, sur l’est et le sud-est de la Roumanie. La vitesse du vent sera assez élevée et ira jusqu’à 65 km à l’heure pour dépasser les 75 km à l’heure sur les Carpates et sur la côte. Une alerte météorologique aux pluies et au vent fort sera également valable à travers le pays. Sur l’ouest des Carpates Méridionales, des chutes de neige modérées sont attendues alors que sur le reste du territoire les précipitations seront mixtes. Le verglas risque de se former sur certaines régions. Les températures iront de – 4 à 4 degrés. 1 degré à Bucarest.

COVID-19 Over 8,800 new SARS-CoV-2 infection cases were reported for the last 24 hours in Romania, double the previous days rate. The Strategic Communication Group also reported 43 related fatalities. 415 patients are in intensive care. The case frequency in the capital city Bucharest is also on the rise, nearing 3 per thousand. Since the start of the vaccine roll-out in late December 2020, nearly 8 million people have got the COVID-19 vaccine. Almost 7.9 million are now fully vaccinated, and more than 2.1 million have also got the booster dose. Facilities are being identified around the country to host the outpatient evaluation centres scheduled to become operational this week. Experts argue that it is important for people to respond to the first signs of infection and to take immediate measures at home.

SASSOLI President Klaus Iohannis Tuesday sent a condolence message for the death of the president of the European Parliament David Sassoli, stating that he was a good friend of Romania and a leader who fought for European values and principles. The Italian Social-Democrat David Sassoli passed away last night in the Italian town of Aviano, where he was hospitalised on December 26 following severe complications related to his immune system. Sassoli, a former journalist, was appointed president of the European Parliament in July 2019. He was at the end of his term, and next Tuesday the EP is due to vote for his successor. It is for the first time in the history of the EP that a president died while in office. First Vice-President Roberta Metsola, a conservative from Malta who was already set to be elected as Sassolis successor next week, will be acting as interim.

TALKS The United States and Russia have agreed to continue the dialogue, which, European media argue, is the only gain of the 8-hour long talks held in Geneva, Switzerland on Monday. The head of the US delegation, deputy secretary of state Wendy Sherman, pushed back on Russias request for guarantees that NATO would not expand further east. “We will not allow anyone to slam closed NATOs “Open Door” policy, which has always been central to the NATO Alliance. And we will not make decisions about Ukraine without Ukraine, about Europe without Europe, or about NATO without NATO,” Sherman said. The US diplomat reiterated at the meeting with her Russian counterpart that invading Ukraine would entail huge costs for Moscow. In turn, Russias deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov once again promised that Russia had no intention to invade Ukraine, but emphasised that the risk of a conflict cannot be understated. The talks in Geneva will be followed this week by Russia-NATO talks in Brussels, and by an OSCE meeting also focusing on Ukraine, in Vienna.

PANDEMIC Italy introduced new restrictions for unvaccinated citizens. Under the new rules, negative COVID tests no longer allow access to public transportation, bars and restaurants. Italy is facing a significant spread of the Omicron variant, and reported over 100,000 new infection cases in 24 hours. According to Radio Romanias correspondent in Rome, PM Mario Draghi said most problems were owing to the unvaccinated. In Israel, new instructions were issued regarding the access to shops and food stores in shopping centres, where all staff and clients must wear face masks. The number of new COVID cases goes up every day, Radio Romanias correspondent in that country reports. The US also announced on Monday 1.35 million new coronavirus infections, Reuters said. India on the other hand had a drop in the number of cases on Tuesday compared to the previous day.

TENNIS The Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse Tuesday qualified in the round of 16 of the WTA 500 tournament in Sydney, with over 700,000 USD in prize money, after defeating Polands Magdalena Frech in 3 sets. Ruse will play against 4th seed Anett Kontaveit (Estonia) in the 8th-finals. Another Romanian player, Jaqueline Cristian, is also playing in the same round. Cristian will take on 3rd seed Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic), the defending Roland Garros champion. (tr. A.M. Popescu)

LAW The Romanian government on Wednesday endorsed a law banning
the cumulated salaries and pensions for state employees. The draft also
provides for the optional increase of the pension age at 70. According to Prime
Minister Florin Citu, the draft will be submitted to Parliament under an emergency
procedure. Under the new law, pensioners, including former servicemen, may get
jobs in authority and public institutions, local or central, or in state
companies, but are no longer to receive pensions, only salaries. Also on
Wednesday, the government decided to extend the state of alert for another
month starting June 12th as well as the measures to be applied to prevent
and fight the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

VISIT Romania is a genuine friend of the Jewish
people and of Israel in the fight against anti-Semitism, Israeli president
Reuven Rivlin said in a speech he delivered before the Romanian Parliament on
Wednesday. He recalled that in January 2020, when world leaders marked in
Jerusalem 75 years since the liberation of the death camps of
Auschwitz and Birkenau, Romanian president Klaus Iohannis pledged to preserve the
memory of Holocaust and step up the fight against anti-Semitism, racism and
xenophobia. The Israeli president went on to say that his country cannot accept
attempts at undermining its right to exist through the illicit use of violent
means and by exploiting international law. Israel is Romania’s closest ally and
strategic partner in the Middle East and the Romanian-Israeli relations are
based on trust and durability, Senate President Anca Dragu said. Cooperation
between the two countries is based on a solid foundation of mutual respect and
deep friendship says Ludovic Orban, president of the Chamber of Deputies. A
Romania-Israel business forum was also hosted by the Bucharest Parliament on
Wednesday. President Rivlin has paid a formal visit to Romania. On Tuesday he
was received by the head of the Romanian state Klaus Iohannis and held talks
with the country’s Prime Minister, Florin Citu.

FILM Romanian director Alexander
Nanău’s film ‘Collective’ has been awarded the 2021 LUX Audience Award, the
president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli has announced in the
plenary session of the EU Legislature in Strasbourg. Two other films, ‘Another
Round’ and ‘Corpus Christi’ have also been shortlisted for the aforementioned
award, which is granted by the European Parliament and the European Film
Academy jointly with the European Commission and Europa Cinemas. During a news
conference in Strasbourg, the Romanian director has described the award as ‘a
bridge for a better communication between the European citizens and those
representing them in the European Parliament’.

Brussels — The Liberal PM Ludovic Orban on Wednesday met in Brussels with the president of the EP, David Sassoli. PM Orban reiterated Romania’s wish to join the Schengen area. Romania’s objective is supported with determination by the EP, and David Sassoli underlined that this would benefit the entire EU. The two officials also talked about the implementation of the agreement on fighting climate change. Romania has called on the European authorities to introduce provisions which should maintain the competitiveness of European companies after the implementation of the agreement and that should allow each country to access the necessary resources to reach the set targets. Ludovic Orban also reiterated Romania’s firm and clear commitment to continuing to act as a loyal partner deeply attached to the European project and expressed Bucharest’s interest in having an active and decisive role in the decision –making process in Brussels. In turn David Sassoli said that Romania was a fundamental state for the EU thanks to its political weight, its adherence to the western culture and its geopolitical relevance.

Iran — The US will immediately impose additional sanctions on Iran unless the latter changes its behavior, President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday speaking from the White House. He called on NATO to become ‘much more involved in the Middle East process’ and on Europe, China and Russia to give up the nuclear agreement with Iran, taking the US’s example. The American President underlined that Iran should give up its nuclear ambitions and its support for terrorism. He also conveyed a message to the Iranian people, saying that America was ready to make peace with those who want it. He gave assurances that no Americans were harmed in last night’s attack on two Iraqi bases housing US troops. Previously, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had condemned the Iranian attack on the Iraqi bases housing US troops, the first retaliatory action after the killing of the influential Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in a drone airstrike on January 3. He called on Iran to abstain from any further violence. NATO suspended its operations of training the Iraqi army and will temporarily transfer part of its personnel outside Iraq out of security reasons. Several West European leaders also condemned the attack and called for reticence. Bucharest officials also made an appeal for calming tensions in the region, the Romanian Foreign Ministry warning that the Iranian attack on the Iraqi bases housing US troops could lead to the deterioration of the security situation in the region. The Romanian military that are part of the international coalition deployed in the area were not affected by the attacks and neither was the 180-strong community of Romanian citizens in the Erbil region in Iraq, which was also targeted by the Iranian missiles.

TurkStream — The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Wednesday officially inaugurated TurkStream gas pipeline that will annually deliver more than 30 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas to Turkey and Europe. On the occasion of a ceremony held in Istanbul, Erdogan considered the inauguration a historic moment for the Turkish-Russian relations and for the region’s energy map. The partnership between Russia and Turkey is being consolidated in all domains, in spite of the efforts of those who are opposed to it, said the Russian president Vladimir Putin. TurkStream gas pipeline is part of Russia’s effort to bypass Ukraine and deliver gas to Europe. The new gas pipeline has two lines: one for the local market in Turkey and another one that will cross Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary for customers in South and Southeastern Europe, France Press reports.

Climate — 2019 was second warmest year on record and the hottest in Europe, shows data provided by Copernicus’ climate change service. The findings show that in 2019 the global average of surface air temperature was only 0.04 degrees C lower than in 2016, the hottest year on record. Also, the 2010-2019 decade was the warmest on record. In 2019 Europe reported the highest temperature on record which exceeded the temperatures reported in the years 2014, 2015 and 2018. VISIT Romania’s president Klaus Iohannis is paying a working
visit to the German state of Bavaria. The Romanian official has attended a
session of the local government and held talks with Markus Soder, the Minister
President of Bavaria and president of the Christian-Social Union CSU. ‘It is very important to signal that our relation both for Romania and for
the ethnics Germans from Romania who are now living in Bavaria is a special
bridge between Romania and Bavaria’, president Iohannis said adding that a
meeting of the mixed Romania-Bavaria committee would be talking place shortly,
a very important event not only for the political relations but also for
economy. Markus Soder has congratulated Ionannis on his second term in office
as president of Romania underlining that Romania is a major partner. ‘We
believe that Europe isn’t led from Brussels alone, and it’s not moving between
Germany and France, but there is an interest in this partnership between
Europe’s smaller states. ‘From a geographical point of view,
Romania is very important for Europe’, Soder added. Iohannis will be
participating in the annual meeting of the CSU group in Bundestag, the German
Parliament’s lower chamber and will have talks with the president of Bavaria
Parliament, Ilse Aigner.

TALKS Romanian Prime Minister Ludovic Orban begins a three-day
working visit to Brussels for talks with European and NATO officials. Orban
will also be attending a meeting of the European People’s Party group within
the European Parliament. The visit kicks off with a bilateral meeting with
Charles Michel, president of the European Council. Also today the head of the
Romanian executive will be received by Frans Timmermans,Executive
Vice President-Designate of the European Commission and will be having talks
with the EU chief negotiator for Brexit Michel Barnier. Orban’s delegation will
also be meeting European commissioners for neighborhood and enlargement Oliver
Varhelyi and for budget and human resources Johannes Hahn. In Brussels Orban
will be holding talks with the head of the European Commission Ursula von der
Leyen, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and with the president of the
European Parliament David Sassoli.

APPEAL Romania’s Interior Ministry has responded to an appeal launched
at European level and has resources ready to be deployed to Australia to help
this country deal with the devastating effects of the bushfires. The EU has
activated its Civil Protection Mechanism and Romania’s President Klaus
Iohannis, who has been briefed on the available resources, has given the
greenlight for the assistance and rescue operations. The EU intends to make
available to the Australian authorities a rescue unit and resources that the
latter can access totally or partially according to their needs. Bushfires in
south-eastern Australia have destroyed over 8 million hectares of vegetation,
killed at least 25 people and destroyed the wildlife in the region. Thousands
of houses have been destroyed or damaged while some towns and villages have
been left without electricity, communications or drinking water.

St. JOHN The
majority Orthodox believers and Greek Catholics in Romania are today
celebrating Saint John, the prophet of the New Testament, the one who baptized
Jesus in Jordan River. John the Baptist as he is also known, was imprisoned and
beheaded by king Herod. Nearly 2 million Romanians are today celebrating their
name day, which puts and end to the winter holiday season in Romania. Old Rite Christians annually
celebrate Christmas Day on January 7 to remember Jesus Christ’s birth,
described in the Christian Bible. This date works to the Julian calendar, that pre-dates
the Gregorian calendar, which is
commonly observed.

Das rumänische Au‎ßenministerium hat, angesichts der jüngsten Eskalation im Nahen Osten, vor Reisen in den Irak gewarnt. Den bereits dort lebenden Rumänen wird empfohlen, überfüllte Orte, an denen Versammlungen oder Demonstrationen stattfinden, zu meiden. Ihnen wird empfohlen ihre Anwesenheit der nächstgelegenen diplomatischen Vertretung oder Konsulat zu melden, um im Notfall kontaktiert werden zu können. Tausende Iraker, darunter auch die wichtigsten Vertreter des Landes, haben am Sonnabend an einem Trauermarsch für die Opfer des amerikanischen Drohnenangriffs teilgenommen, bei dem auch der iranische General Qassem Soleimani und Abou Mehdi al-Mouhandis, der Vertreter Irans im Irak, ums Leben gekommen sind. Der 62-jährige General Soleimani galt als der zweitwichtigste Führer nach dem geistlichen Führer Ali Khamenei. US-Präsident Donald Trump sagte, mit der Tötung Soleimanis solle ein Krieg gestoppt, nicht aber einer ausgelöst werden. Die BBC schätzte jedoch, mit dieser Tötung werde an der Gewaltspirale zwischen dem Iran und den USA geschraubt. Teheran hat mit Rache an den USA für die Ermordung des Generals gedroht.

Über 21 Tausend Mitarbeiter des rumänischen Innenministeriums waren in den ersten drei Tagen dieses Jahres im Dienst, um die Sicherheit der Bürger während der Winterferien zu gewährleisten, hei‎ßt es in einem Bericht des Ministeriums. Laut denselben Quellen wurden bei den 180 kulturell-künstlerischen Veranstaltungen, die von fast 320.000 Menschen am Silvesterabend besucht wurden, keine grö‎ßeren Ereignisse gemeldet. Die Polizei griff in 7.300 Fällen der öffentlichen Ordnung ein, die unter der Notrufnummer 112 gemeldet wurden. Auf den meist befahrenen Stra‎ßen waren bis zu 1.500 Stra‎ßenpolizisten mit rund 270 Radargeräten im Einsatz. Darüber hinaus waren über den Feiertagen 4.000 Grenzpolizisten an den Grenzkontrollpunkten des Landes im Einsatz, um die Einreise der ausländischen Touristen, sowie der Rumänen, die für den Winterurlaub nach Hause gekommen waren, zu erleichtern.

Verheerende Buschfeuer in Australien haben die Behörden veranlasst, Zehntausende zu evakuieren. Hohe Temperaturen und starker Wind haben die Buschfeuer, die an einigen Orten au‎ßer Kontrolle geraten sind, weiter angefacht. Seit Anfang September, als das Feuer ausbrach, sind rund fünf Millionen Hektar Land verbrannt, mindestens 19 Menschen getötet und mehr als 1.400 Häuser zerstört worden.

Der rumänische Premierminister Ludovic Orban wird vom 7.-9. Januar zu dem europäischen Institutionen und dem NATO-Sitz in Brüssel reisen. Dabei kommt er mit der Vorsitzenden der Europäischen Kommission, Ursula von der Leyen und NATO-Generalsekretär, Jens Stoltenberg zusammen. Vorgesehen sind auch Treffen mit den Vorsitzenden des Europäischen Rates, Charles Michel und den Vorsitzenden des europäischen Parlaments, David Sassoli.

35 Athleten werden Rumänien bei den Olympischen Jugendspielen 2020, die am 9. und 22. Januar in Lausanne, Schweiz, stattfinden werden, vertreten. Laut einem Kommuniqué des rumänischen Olympischen und Sportkomitees werden die rumänischen Athleten in verschiedenen Disziplinen wie Biathlon, Bob-Schlitten, Eishockey, Eisschnelllauf, Schlitten, Skispringen, Alpinski, Skilanglauf und Snowboard antreten. Bei der letzten Ausgabe im norwegischen Lillehammer gingen die ersten Medaillen in der Geschichte der Teilnahme Rumäniens an einer solchen Veranstaltung an Eduard Casaneanu, der beim Eishockey Gold und Mihaela Hogas, die Bronze im Eisschnelllauf gewann.

Das EU-Parlament stimmt nächste Woche über die neue Kommission ab

Die Abstimmung über die neue Europäische Kommission ist für nächsten Mittwoch in der Plenarsitzung des Europäischen Parlaments in Stra‎ßburg vorgesehen. Dies kündigte Parlamentspräsident David Sassoli an. Der sagte auch, dass die Bewertungsbriefe der designierten Kommissionsmitglieder veröffentlicht werden. Diese sind die Berichte der Fachausschüsse nach der Anhörung der einzelnen Kandidaten, die zwischen dem 30. September und dem 8. Oktober für 23 Kandidaten stattfand. Die letzte Runde der Anhörungen fand am 14. November statt, mit den von Rumänien, Ungarn und Frankreich vorgeschlagenen neuen Kandidaten, nachdem die ersten Nominierungen dieser Länder im parlamentarischen Validierungsverfahren abgelehnt wurden.

Letzte Woche hat die Europäische Kommission ein Vertragsverletzungsverfahren gegen Gro‎ßbritannien eingeleitet, das es abgelehnt hat, einen Kommissar zu benennen.

Nach Angaben des Präsidenten des Europäischen Parlaments hat das Gremium in den letzten zwei Monaten die Leistungen der designierten Kommissare sorgfältig geprüft und die Konferenz der Präsidenten, bestehend aus den Fraktionsvorsitzenden und dem Präsidenten des Europäischen Parlaments, hat die abschlie‎ßende Bewertung nach einem Meinungsaustausch mit den drei Vizepräsidenten der Kommission — Frans Timmermans, Margrethe Vestager und Valdis Dombrovkis — durchgeführt.

Die Anhörungen waren detailliert und manchmal schwierig, aber sie boten den Mitgliedern des Europäischen Parlaments eine einzigartige und transparente Möglichkeit an, umzu prüfen, ob die designierten Kommissionsmitglieder für die bevorstehende Arbeit geeignet sind“, sagte Sassoli. Am Donnerstag schloss das Parlament den Bewertungsprozess offiziell ab. David Sassoli: Die Abstimmung über das Kollegium der Kommissare findet nächste Woche statt. Es wird eine positive Abstimmung geben. Die Kommission wird somit ihre Arbeit am 1. Dezember aufnehmen. Als direkte Verbindung zu den EU-Bürgern wird das Parlament die Kommission weiterhin zur Rechenschaft ziehen um sichezurstellen, dass sie ihre Versprechen einhält“, fügte der Präsident des EP hinzu.

Die Abstimmung in der Plenarsitzung des Parlaments findet statt, nachdem Ursula von der Leyen die neuen Mitglieder und ihr Programm vorgestellt hat. In den nächsten fünf Jahren wird Europa vor vielen Herausforderungen stehen. Sassoli sprach von langfristigen Lösungen für Migration und Asyl bis hin zur Festigung der weltweiten Führungsrolle im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel. Wir brauchen eine Europäische Kommission, die bereit ist, die Probleme der Europäer anzugehen, sagte ferner David Sassoli.

Das Europäische Parlament hat erneut seine Unterstützung für die ehemalige Leiterin der wichtigsten rumänischen Anti-Korruptionsbehörde (DNA), Laura Codruta Kovesi, als ihre Kandidatin für das Amt des Europäischen Generalstaatsanwalts bekräftigt. Wie der Präsident des Europäischen Parlaments, David Maria Sassoli, in einem Kommuniqué erklärt hat, ist es unerlässlich, dass Ermittlung und Verfolgung in Fällen von EU-Haushaltsbetrug, Korruption oder grenzüberschreitendem Mehrwertsteuerbetrug so bald wie möglich gewährleistet ist. Die Übermittlung eines Unterstützungsschreibens des Europäischen Parlaments für Kövesi wurde am Donnerstag auf der Konferenz der Präsidenten des Europäischen Parlaments (in der die Vorsitzenden der Fraktionen des Parlaments zusammenkommen) beschlossen. Wir erinnern daran, dass das Europäische Parlament im Frühjahr beschlossen hat, Kovesi als Leiterin der Europäischen Staatsanwaltschaft zu unterstützen, während der EU-Rat den französischen Kandidaten Jean-Francois Bohnert bevorzugte. Mehrere Gesprächsrunden zwischen den Delegierten der beiden Institutionen haben bisher zu keinem Ergebnis geführt. Gemä‎ß den Geschäftsordnungen der künftigen europäischen Institution, müssen sich Rat und Parlament auf die Ernennung des Generalstaatsanwalts für ein siebenjähriges Mandat einigen, das nicht verlängert werden kann.

Auf einer Ministerkonferenz in Washington zur Förderung der Religionsfreiheit, die vom US-Au‎ßenministerium veranstaltet wird, hat die rumänische Au‎ßenministerin Maria Magdalena Grigore erklärt, dass Rumänien die Religionsfreiheit und den Geistes der Toleranz fördern werde. Dies teilte das Au‎ßenministerium in Bukarest mit. Wir glauben, dass ethnische und religiöse Vielfalt Quellen der Entwicklung sind, die jede Kultur oder Gesellschaft bereichern, und der jüngste Besuch des Papstes Franziskus in Rumänien ist ein Beweis für die zwischenkonfessionelle Harmonie in unserem Land”, sagte die rumänische Vertreterin weiter. An der Konferenz nahmen über 100 Au‎ßenminister und hochrangige Regierungsvertreter aus der ganzen Welt teil. Die Teilnehmer haben sich mit den aktuellen Herausforderungen für die Religionsfreiheit und den konkreten Möglichkeiten zur Bekämpfung religiöser Verfolgungen beschäftigt. Die Konfereny, die unter der Leitung von Staatssekretär Mike Pompeo stattfindet, ist die die grö‎ßte Veranstaltung dieser Art weltweit.

Eine Delegation des rumänischen Ministeriums für Unternehmensumfeld und Handel besucht vom 19. bis 26. Juli Japan, in dem Versuch das Interesse japanischer Investoren an der rumänischen Wirtschaft zu fördern. Laut einem Kommuniqué, des Ministeriums, das Freitag herausgegeben wurde, stehten auf der Tagesordnung der rumänischen Delegation Gespräche und Treffen in Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto und Tokio mit Beamten der japanischen Regierungsinstitutionen und Vertretern der Wirtschaft und der Banken über die Möglichkeiten, die sich aus dem Inkrafttreten des Wirtschaftspartnerschaftsabkommens zwischen der EU und Japan Anfang dieses Jahres ergeben. Desgleichen sind Gespräche mit Vertretern mehrerer gro‎ßer japanischer Unternehmen vorgesehen. Der bilaterale Handel zwischen den beiden Ländern belief sich 2018 auf 710 Millionen Dollar. Rumänien exportiert Tabak, Holz, Honig, Autoteile, Kleidung, Arztneimittel, Elektrogeräte und importiert Autos, Industriemaschinen und -geräte, Metall- und Chemieprodukte, Instrumente sowie optische und fotografische Geräte nach Japan.

Das 11. Festival für Film und Geschichten beginnt heute in der zentralrumänischen Kleinstadt Rasnov. Bis zum 28. Juli finden in der Innenstadt Filmvorführungen, Theateraufführungen, Konzerte mit Rock- und Barockmusik statt. Auf dem Festival finden auch Debatten über die antikommunistische Revolution vom Dezember 1989, über wirtschaftliche Freiheit, Freiheit der Musik, gewonnene Freiheit und verlorene Freiheit 30 Jahre nach dem Untergang des kommunistischen Regimes in Rumänien, sowie über die Beziehung zwischen Kino und die Freiheit statt. Das Festival beschäftigt auch mit komplexen Themen, wie die rumänische Migration, die Zukunft Europas nach dem Brexit, die Digitalisierung der Gesellschaft oder die Minderheitenfrage.

Wetter — Heiss ist es in der rumänischen Ebene, für den Sommer normale Temperaturen herrschen in den restlichen Landesteilen. Der Himmel ist wechselhaft, vereinzelte Gewitter können vor allem im Gebirge auftreten. Die Tagestiefsttemeraturen werden zwischen 10 – 20 Grad C, die Höchstwerte zwischen 26 und 33 Grad Celsius.
