diversity – have been seen and heard by the entire Europe, the mayor went on

AID The West must provide more military
aid to Ukraine and speed up its deliveries, the EU Foreign Policy Chief Joseph
Borrell said in Munich on Sunday. In a speech he delivered during the Security

done and much quicker. Borrell went on to say that he supported an Estonian
proposal for the European Union to buy ammunition on behalf of its member
states to increase its military support to Ukraine. Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu held

RALLY Over 100 thousand people took to
the streets of Israel on Saturday night to fight a plan to overhaul the
country’s court system that the justice minister says he is determined to carry
out. The Israelis have protested for seven weeks now against the legislation
that Netanyahu, his right-wing and religious allies hope to pass and which
would limit the Supreme Court’s powers to rule against the legislature and the
executive. The reforms would also give the government more influence over the
committee, which appoints the judges, including to the Supreme Court. According
to protesters, the plan will weaken the courts, endanger civil liberties and
    harm the economy.

    pandemic.

COVID-19 According to the latest figures released by authorities on
Sunday, 7595 new Covid-19 infections have been reported in the past 24 hours in
Romania, 60% more than a week ago. 28 Covid-related fatalities have been
reported. Experts believe the fifth wave of the pandemic is stronger than the
previous ones and is to reach its peak in Romania in the last week of January
or the first of February, when the number of daily cases is expected to go up
to 50 thousand. The interest of the Romanians in getting the jab is still low,
with only 36 hundred in the past 24 hours. Epidemiologists are urging the
people to get immunized because the vulnerable categories are at risk.

TENNIS Romania has five representatives on the main draw of Australian
Open, the year’s first Grand Slam tournament. Other Romanians have been
eliminated from the competition in the qualifiers. In the first round Simona
Halep, a former number one, will be up against Magdalena Frech of Poland, while

JUSTICE The Ministry of Justice in Bucharest has completed a draft on
dismantling the Special Direction for investigating criminal offences within
the judiciary, SIIJ. The institution has announced in a communiqué that in the
following days it will submit the document for government and Parliament
approval. We recall that the activity of this special body has attracted
criticism from the European Commission, which says the SIIJ could be more
susceptible to interventions from outside than the Anti-corruption Directorate,
known in Romania as the DNA. The Justice Ministry has announced that it will
resume the process of amending the justice laws and the criminal codes so that
they can be approved by Parliament by the end of March. The Ministry of Justice
reiterates its support for the EU law and legislation stipulated by the Lisbon
Treaty and recognized by the Romanian constitution.

  • The conclusions of the latest CVM report

The conclusions of the latest CVM report

The European Commission notes a positive trend in the reform of the judiciary and in the fight against corruption in Romania, but announces that it will continue to closely monitor the evolution of the situation until all objectives are met. The Commission published on Tuesday the report on the progress made by the Bucharest authorities under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism established since Romania’s accession to the EU in 2007, and whose purpose is precisely to signal possible failures and to propose remedies for the justice system.

However, the Commission welcomes the fact that, this year, a new impetus was given in terms of reforming and correcting the transgressions that marked the period 2017-2019. As a result, the Community Executive says, progress has been made on all the CVM recommendations that have not yet been implemented, and many of them are close to being met if progress remains constant. In the vision of the European Commission, Romania must work on seven recommendations from 2018 and ten recommendations from 2017. The appointment early last year of the country’s attorney general and head of DIICOT, despite the negative opinion of the Superior Council of Magistracy, is criticized by the Commission.

The SCM gets a black ball too, among other things, for its ambiguous position on the shutting down of the Special department for investigating offences committed by the judiciary, the existence and functioning of which are considered to be of concern in Brussels. On the very day when the new MCV report of the European Commission was published, in Bucharest, the Constitutional Court upheld, however, its decision according to which this special department for magistrates is constitutional and can only be abolished by Parliament, through a new law. The Minister of Justice, Stelian Ion, promised to find solutions:

We cannot expect the Court of Justice of the European Union to resolve our internal problems. We have been given all the freedom to do it. Also, we cannot expect the judiciary to solve these problems alone. Therefore, it is very important, as politicians, to find the solution for the rapid abolition of this Special department for investigating offences committed by the judiciary and I still consider that the Government project is the correct one, so I will try to convince my parliamentary colleagues to go for this solution. It is very important that we succeed in shutting down this department, which has been often criticized, including in this report.

With regard to the fight against corruption, the European Commission stresses that the appointment of a new head of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) has led to institutional stability. The situation has improved compared to 2019, but the Directorate faces a number of challenges, one of which is the staff shortage, the Commission also says. (MI)

begin with good news from handball. The Romanian women’s side CSM has received
a wildcard to participate in the next edition of the Champions League due to
unfold in a new format. Only SCM Ramnicu Valcea initially qualified for the
League after they had ended on the first position in the championships. Brest
Bretagne, TSK Moscow, Ferencvaros Budapest, Bietigheim, Podravca Koprivnica and
Krim Ljubljana have also received wildcards.

    Romanian men’s side Dinamo
Bucharest also hoped for a wildcard for the Champions League, as they had been
edged out of the present edition without any defeat. However, their dreams have
been shattered by the European Federation whose decision allows Dinamo to play
in the new continental competition the European Handball League directly in the
    groups’ stage.

    The Dutch Martine Smeets,
one of the world’s best left wings, has been transferred to CSM Bucharest. A
world champion and bronze medalist in the European Championship with the Dutch
side, Smeets comes after a season at French team Metz. She is the fourth player
to have joined the Romanian side for the future season, after French Siraba
Dembele, Spanish Alexandrina Cabral Barbosa and Barbara Lazovic of Slovenia. On
the other hand Norwegian player Nora Mork has announced her departure from CSM
    Bucharest.
