Romanian handball player Cristina Neagu has become the top scorer in the history of the Champions League. On Sunday, Neagu scored 10 goals for CSM Bucharest in their home match against Danish side Nykøbing Falster, a match CSM Bucharest won, 27-26. Neagu’s recent feat has thus raised to 1,155 the number of goals scored in the EHF Champions league, that is 10 goals more than the previous record, held by Montenegrin player Jovanka Radičević.

After four rounds, according to the rankings of the most efficient players as part of the League’s ongoing edition, Cristina Neagu is 7th-placed, with 23 goals. At the top of the table, we find Norwegian team Esbjerg’s handball player Henny Ella Reistad, with 39 goals. Following in descending order are Rapid Bucharest’s Serbian player, Andjela Janjusevic, with 29 goals, and CSM Bucharest’s Bulgarian-born Slovenian handballer Elisabeth Omoregie, with 26 goals.

Cristina Neagu has succeeded the new record of her career having made public the fact, on September 12, that 2024-2025 would be the last in her career. We recall that in December 2023 she had already made public the fact that she would retire from competition at the national team, after the World Championship in Denmark and Norway. Back then Romania wasted the opportunity to qualify to the Paris Olympics.

Cristina Neagu also holds another impressive record. In 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2018, the International de Handball Federation designated Neagu the world’s best handballer. Cristina Neagu thus became the first handball player in history to have won the trophy four times. However, she did not win any major international trophy with a Romanian team.

With Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea, Cristina Neagu reached as far as the Champions League final. After Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea was dismantled, Neagu was signed up by Montenegro’s Buducnost Podgorica, a team with which she won the Champions League in 2015. With the Romanian national squad, Cristina Neagu won two bronze medals, in 2010, at the European Championship jointly hosted by Denmark and Norway, and in 2015, at the World Championship in Denmark.

    Romanian women’s handball team Gloria
Bistriţa late last week advanced to the EHF European League’s quarterfinals. Gloria
grabbed a 34-29 away win against French opponents Nantes, a team that was at the
top of the table in Group C, after the first three rounds. Two rounds ahead of
the end of the League’s group stage, Gloria has secured one of the first two places
in the Group, also booking its place among the competition’s top eight teams.

    In the match
against Nantes, Gloria had the upper hand all throughout the game, being even
nine goals clear of their French opponents. Gloria eventually secured a
five-goal advantage. With nine goals scored, Gloria’s most efficient handballer
    was Bianca Bazaliu.

Reason enough for Radio Romania International
to designate Banca Bazaliu the Athlete of the week.

    Bianca Bazaliu was
born in Slatina, on July 30, 1997. She made her debut in handball with the Slatina-based
Sports High school team. At the age of 14 she was already signed up with Romania’s
National juniors’ team. At the World Juniors’ Championship in 2014 Bazaliu was a
member of the lineup that walked away with the gold medal. With 76 goals
scored, Bianca came in 2nd according to the top scorers’ rankings. Also,
Bianca Bazaliu was voted as a member of the tournament’s dream team, being designated
the best left winger. Also in 2014, Bianca played for CSM Bucharest, the team
with which, in 2016, won the Champions’ League. In 2019, Bianca Bazaliu had a
short stint with Corona Brasov, then she returned to CSM Bucharest. A yearlong stint
with Croatia’s Podravka Koprivnica followed. Since 2022, Bianca has been playing
for Gloria Bistrita. Since 2014, Bianca Bazaliu has been an honorary citizen of
her native town, Slatina, also being an honorary citizens of Romania’s capital
    city, Bucharest, since 2016.

The recently-held IHF World Women’s Championship brought the women’s international competition season to a standstill for about
a month. The season has been resumed, with a new stage as part of the European
    Cups.

Five Romanian teams have been proving their
mettle in the Champions league and the EHF European League, respectively. They
are CSM Bucharest, Rapid Bucharest, Dunarea Braila, Gloria Bistrita and CSM
    Targu Jiu.

CSM Bucharest this past weekend had an
    excellent run, trouncing Montenegro’s Buducnost
Podgorica, 44 to 26. CSM was lucky
enough to have Cristina Neagu on the lineup, in top shape. At the recently-held World
Championships, Cristina was part of the lineup but she played one single
game, the fixture against Germany in the main group, having incompletely
recovered from an injury. In this past Sunday’s game, Cristina Neagu was again
her team’s top handballer, and the seven goals she scored mattered a lot in CSM’s
    confrontation against Buducnost.

Reason enough for Radio Romania International
to designate Cristina Neagu the Athlete of the week.

    Cristina Neagu was
born in Bucharest, on August 26, 1988. She made her debut with the School
Sports Club number 5. In 2006, Cristina Neagu turned pro, being signed up by
Rulmentul from Brasov, then she had a stint with Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea. In
2010, playing for Oltchim, Cristina Neagu reached as far as the Champions League
final. When Oltchim was dismantled, Neagu was signed up by Buducnost Podgorica,
winner of the Champions League in 2015. Since 2017, Cristina Neagu has been
playing for CSM Bucharest. In 2010, 2015, 2016 și 2018, the IHF designated
Cristina Neagu the world’s best handballer. Cristina thus became the first
handballer in history who won the title four times. After the IHF Women’s World
Championship in December, when the Romanian national team wasted the
opportunity to qualify to the Olympic Games in Paris, Cristina Neagu announced her
    retirement from the national team.

    As a Romanian national
team player, Cristina Neagu won two bronze medals, in 2010, at the European
Championship, jointly hosted by Denmark and Norway, and at the World
    Championship in Denmark, in 2015.

    The year’s leading women’s handball
competition is scheduled in November 2022. We’re speaking about the European Championship,
to be jointly hosted by three former Yugoslavia states, Slovenia, North Macedonia
and Montenegro. Slovenia’s Celje and Ljubljana will be hosting Group A and Group
B fixtures. North Macedonia’s Skopje will play host to fixtures in Group C,
which includes Romania, alongside the teams of France, the Low Countries and
North Macedonia. Games will be played on the Boris Trajkovski arena in Skopje. Group D games are scheduled in Podgorica.

The competition will kick-start on November 4. Romania’s debut game
is scheduled on November 5, when our national squad takes on the Low Countries
    team. Then Romania takes on
France, on November 7, while on Wednesday, November 9, Romania goes against host
team, North Macedonia. The fist three teams, in descending order, advance to
the competition’s main group stage. Most likely, and according to their most
recent excellent run, France and the Low Countries are the favorites to
winning the top and the runner-up position in Group C, while Romania will fight
will North Macedonia for the 3rd position in the group. A daunting task ahead,
for the Romanians. The Skopje Arena has a seating capacity for up to 7,000 fans, while
the Macedonian supporters will go at all lengths so that their national team
    can win.

    Last week’s Carpati
Trophy in Bistritsa counted as the last leg as part of Romanian national squad’s
centralized preparation stage ahead of the upcoming European competition. For
the national team, it was the first tournament with head-coach Florentin Pera at
    the helm.

    Romanian national
squad’s debut match against Austria ended in a 32-all draw. Then the team’s defensive
game mechanisms were perfected and in the following fixtures it worked for the Romanian
squad’s greater good. Therefore, Romania had no problem defeating Serbia, 26-20.
In the competition’s last confrontation, Romania defeated Spain, 25-23, and
secured the top position according to the final rankings. In the game against
Spain, keeper Iulia Dumanska and inside left Sorina
Grozav compelled recognition. Grozav replaced Cristina Neagu, who was again
the national’s team’s best handballer. Apart from Sorina Grozav, Pera threw
several handballers of the younger generation into the game, and it appears
that the collaboration between veterans and the younger handballers went just
about fine. However, we’re still a month away from the European Championships,
an eventful month with European Cups matches on schedule, so we keep our fingers
crossed for the handballers and their health. (EN)

    Athlete of the week

Romanian international footballer Valentin Mihaila was
one of the Serie A 27th round’s scorers. Currently signed up by
Parma, this past Sunday Mihaila provided the opener in Parma’s home game
against AS Rome. On 9th minute Mihaila drew first blood as the other
Romanian playing for Parma, Dennis Man, centered the ball from the right-hand
side of the pitch. According to a statistic quoted by Agerpres, it was for the
first time since the 2004-2005 season when a Romanian provided an assist for
    another Romanian in a Serie A fixture. Parma won the match against Rome, 2-nil;
reason enough for Radio Romania International to designate Valentin Mihaila the
    Athlete of the week.

Valentin Mihăilă scored for Parma for the second time
in a row in a Serie A match. This past Sunday Mihaila scored against Fiorentina
on 90 minutes, away from home. Yet Parma sadly wasted the opportunity the win,
since Fiorentina scored in the 4th minute of extra time, and the
match ended 3-all. Notwithstanding, the fact that Parma grabbed a point in the
match against Fiorentina was crucial for Parma’s race against relegation.
Furthermore, the three points Parma won in the match against Rome enable the
former team to keep its hopes alive for another season in Serie A.

Valentin Mihăilă was born in 2000, on February 2nd.
He made his debut in professional football when he was 17, in Universitatea
Craiova’s match against Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe, counting towards Romanian Cup in
football, a fixture Craiova won, 2-nil. It was not until 2018 when Mihaila
played for Universitatea Craiova’s first lineup. Also in 2018, Valentin Mihaila
played for Universitatea Craiova in Europa League preliminaries; we recall that
back then Craiova sustained a 1-3 defeat by RP Leipzig. In 2020, Valentin
Mihaila was sold to Parma for 8 million and a half Euros, the heftiest sum ever
to have been paid for a Romanian League One footballer.
