    Romanian
national football team has had a flawed debut confrontation in the fresh edition
of the National League’ Division B. In Podgorica, Romania sustained a nil-2
defeated by the host team, Montenegro. Scoring for the hosts were Stefan Mugoša on 66 minutes and Marko Vukčević in minute 87. Both
goals were made possible because of captain Vlad Chiricheş’s errors of the
pitch. Montenegro definitely had the upper hand tactically but also in one-to-one
confrontations. It took our national squad 94 minutes of play to make at attempted
shot at goal. It was the first official match of Romanian national team’s new
head-coach, Edward Iordanescu. The latter took full responsibility for the
failure. Yet Iordanescu stressed that he did not take over a functional team,
but a team that several times wasted the opportunity to qualify for international
competitions. In another Group 3 fixture as part of League B, in Helsinki, Finland
drew against Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1-all. After the first round, Romania is at
the bottom of the table. On Tuesday in Zenica Romanian faces Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Romania’s defender Iulian Cristea will be unavailable for the match. We recall
Cristea sustained a serious injury early into the match against Montenegro.
According to head-coach Iordanescu, Cristea needs a long recovery break.

Romanian handballer Cristina Neagu has been
designated the most efficient scorer in this year’s edition of the Champions’ League.
Even after the League’s final tournament, held this past weekend in Budapest, all
told, no other handballer was able to score more goals that Neagu’s 110. We recall
Cristina Neagu’s current team, CSM Bucharest, was unable to move past the quarterfinals.
Also, Neagu, for the seventh time running, was included in the dream team of
the Champions League’s season, created according to the supporters’ votes.
    33-year old Neagu has also been included in the All-Star team before, in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2021. Norway’s
Vipers Kristiansand have won this year’s edition of the Champions League. In the
final Vipers outclassed Gyor of Hungary, 33 to 31. Playing for Gyor was Romanian
national team’s pivot, Crina Pintea, who scored three goals.

    The southern Romanian
city of Craiova this past weekend played host to Romania’s International Athletics
Championships. However, Romania’s top-flight athletes were abroad taking part
in top international competitions. For instance, distance runner Mihaela
Bobocea, has had an eventful week. On Tuesday at the international competition
in Ostrava, the Czech Republic, Bobocea came in 4th in the 1,500m
race. However, her timing secured Mihaela Bobocea the ticket for the World
Championships held in July in the USA, but also the European Championships held
in Germany, in July. This past Friday in Manchester, in World Athletics Continental Tour contest, Bobocea won the 800m race. Then In
Morocco on Sunday, at the international contest in the Moroccan capital city Rabat,
Bobocea cam in 5th in the 1,500 m race, in a competition as part of the Diamond
    League circuit.

  • The latest on vaccination

    The latest on vaccination

Citizens willingness to get vaccinated remains at a steady 50% in Romania, according to sociological surveys, the head of the national SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination Coordination Committee Valeriu Gheorghiţă announced on Tuesday. According to him, at present over 1.2 million people have appointments both for the first dose and for the booster, most of them for the Pfizer vaccine. So far in Romania nearly 2.4 million people have received the vaccine, and over half of them have got both doses.

Valeriu Gheorghiţă also mentioned that at present over 1,000 vaccination centres are operational, with a total maximum capacity of 115,000 doses per day. Most of them, i.e. over two-thirds, are Pfizer centres, and the remaining give AstraZeneca and Moderna shots.

The Romanian official also announced that as of the next few days people who wish to get the vaccine without a previous appointment will be able to come directly to the AstraZeneca centres with available spots.

With the number of patients in intensive care and the number of COVID-19-related deaths on the rise across the country, authorities once again call on people to get the vaccine and to observe protection measures.

According to the National Public Health Institute (INSP), over 18,000 people, accounting for less than 1% of the total number of people that have received the vaccine, have had a positive SARS-CoV-2 test between December 2020 and April 2021, after receiving the first dose. Some two-thirds of them had got the Pfizer jab, one-quarter the AstraZeneca, and the others the Moderna vaccine.

During the same period, nearly 3,000 people, accounting for 0.21% of the total number of people having also received the booster dose, tested positive after immunization. Most of them had been given the Pfizer serum, and the others the Moderna one. The booster dose for the British-Swedish vaccine AstraZeneca only started being given this week.

Meanwhile, the first 60,000 doses of Johnson&Johnson vaccine reached Romania on Wednesday, but they will not be given out until the European Medicines Agency issues guidelines on its safety.

Federal healthcare authorities in the US Tuesday recommended suspending the vaccine after a number of people that had received it reported blood clots. According to Romanian authorities, this month another 100,000 Johnson&Johnson doses are scheduled to arrive in the country, followed by half a million doses in May and another 1.6 million in June. • Romanian Cup in football

    Romanian Cup in football

    Football
Club Steaua Bucharest, FCSB, this past Wednesday won Romanian Cup in football. In
the final, FCSB outclassed Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe, 1-nil. The fixture was hosted
by the Ilie Oana Stadium in Ploiesti, southern Romania. FCSB’s Dennis Man
scored the only goal of the match in minute 65.

    FCSB
enjoyed the advantage of ranking as favorites, since they compete in Group 2,
which is domestic League One’s upper echelon. As for Group 1 opponents Sepsi,
the grim prospects of relegation still loomed large, let alone the footballers
state of exhaustion, since they had one match every three days on schedule.

    Notwithstanding,
in the first half, Sepsi were in no way the minnows in the match against FCSB,
proving they were a team to be reckoned with. Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe were more
active, quite often dominating FCSB’s half of the pitch. The latter team only
had a couple of counterattacking bouts and several attempted shots on target,
which posed a problem for Sepsi’s goalie Roland Niczuly. In the second half,
Sepsi’s impetus simply fizzled out and FCSB were quick to place themselves in
control. Dennis Man’s goal was scored at random and was made possible by the hesitation
of Sepsi’s defensive lineup. However, the goal occurred quite logically, being
the outcome of FCSB’s performance of the pitch. Several other scoring
opportunities occurred for FCSB later on, yet the team from Bucharest did
little short of wasting them all. FCSB’s job on the pitch was made easier since
Sepsi’s French player Bouhenna got yellow-booked twice in only a couple of
minutes and was eliminated in minute 79. Towards the end of the game, Sepsi’s
pride galvanized the team and they became a little bit more dangerous as Sepsi
managed to advance towards FCSB’s posts for a couple of times. Nonetheless, all
throughout the game, Sepsi did not succeed a single attempted shot on target.

    FCSB thus
added the 23rd Cup of Romania to their record. 2015 was the year
when FCSB had last won the cup. Back then the team from Bucharest grabbed a
3-nil win against Universitatea Cluj on the National Arena. For Sepsi, playing
in Romania’s Cup final was an absolute first. FCSB’s win booked them the ticket
for Europa League’s preliminaries. A qualifying League One position has enabled
another Romanian team, FC Botosani, to go through to Europa League as well.
