    Ein geheimnisvoller Film über Trauer und das, was im Leben wirklich zählt

    Gabriel Achims Film “Verschneite Dunkelheit” (Originaltitel: “Uneori ninge cu zăpadă, alteori cu întuneric”) feierte seine Weltpremiere in der Auswahl des Wettbewerbs “Rebels With A Cause” bei der 25. Ausgabe des Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. Das Festival, dessen erste Ausgabe 1997 in der estnischen Hauptstadt stattfand, ist eines der wichtigsten Filmereignisse in Europa mit einer der sichtbarsten Wettbewerbssektionen in der Region. “Verschneite Dunkelheit” wird von Mandragora produziert und soll in der ersten Jahreshälfte in die rumänischen Kinos kommen.



    Wir sprechen mit Gabriel Achim über den komplizierten Entstehungsprozess seines dritten Spielfilms “Verschneite Dunkelheit”: “Leider leben wir in schwierigen Zeiten, die uns dazu bringen sollten, uns auf das Wesentliche zu konzentrieren, die Zeit mehr zu schätzen und mehr nach Qualität zu suchen. Aber das ist nicht geschehen, im Gegenteil, ich stelle fest, dass unsere Werte langsam an Bedeutung verlieren. Die Kunst scheint immer nutzloser zu werden, weil die Menschen langsam Abstand davon nehmen. Ich könnte sagen, dass “Verschneite Dunkelheit” ein Film ist, der fast unabhängig gemacht wurde, denn die sehr geringe Finanzierung erlaubte es uns nicht, ein gro‎ßes Team oder sehr viele Schauspieler zu haben. Aber daran bin ich gewöhnt und schlie‎ßlich kam alles zusammen und es gelang mir, einen Film zu machen, den ich sehr mag. Bevor ich mit der Arbeit an diesem Film begann, hatte ich ein Projekt, das durch das EU-Media-Programm gefördert worden war, einen französischen Koproduzenten hatte und auf Fachfestivals mehrere internationale Preise gewonnen hatte. Es war ein Projekt, das mein dritter Spielfilm zu werden schien. Leider gelang es mir nicht, eine Finanzierung aus Rumänien zu erhalten und mir wurde klar, dass es keinen Sinn mehr machte, mich beim Nationalen Filmzentrum zu bewerben.



    Daraufhin hatte ich ein Gespräch mit dem Regisseur Cristi Puiu, der mich ziemlich verzweifelt sah, weil ich mit dem Projekt nicht weitermachen konnte und mir riet, ein Drehbuch zu schreiben, das auf der Situation basierte, in der ich mich zu diesem Zeitpunkt befand. Ich hatte noch zwei Wochen Zeit bis zu dem Zeitpunkt, an dem ich die Finanzierung beantragen sollte, ich schrieb trotzdem das Drehbuch zusammen mit Cosmin Manolache, mit dem ich normalerweise zusammenarbeite. Als ich den Film bearbeitete, musste ich einige Dinge aus dem ursprünglichen Drehbuch aufgeben, denn es wäre zu komplex gewesen, zu sehr auf die Idee ausgerichtet, die Zuschauer zu provozieren, sie aus ihrer Komfortzone herauszuholen. Ich denke, wenn ich es in dieser ursprünglichen Form gelassen hätte, hätte ich zu viele Zuschauer vergrault. Also ich habe mein Drehbuch neu überdacht. Ich habe einen Film mit einer komplexen Struktur gedreht, der aber freundlicher und näher an meinen Absichten ist, einen Film, der, auch wenn er die Zuschauer herausfordert, das vermittelt, was ich vermitteln wollte. Ich kann sagen, dass ich den Mangel an Geld durch den Enthusiasmus des Teams wettgemacht habe. Ich hatte auch eine au‎ßergewöhnliche Bühnenbildnerin, Ana Gabriela Lemnaru, ebenfalls ein sehr professionelles Team, mit dem ich auch bei der Serie Las Fierbinți zusammenarbeite.”



    “Verschneite Dunkelheit” erzählt die Geschichte von Teo, einem Regisseur, der mit Schauspielern für ein neues Projekt probt. Das autobiografische Thema ist von Anfang an verwirrend: die Aufgewühltheit eines Regisseurs, der ein Stück über das Drama inszeniert, das er nach dem Tod seiner kleinen Tochter infolge einer unheilbaren Krankheit erlebt. Im Laufe der Geschichte, von der es fünf Arbeitsversionen gibt, kommen ungewisse Episoden ans Licht, die an Leben und Fiktion grenzen. Gabriel Achim kommt erneut zu Wort mit Einzelheiten: “Es ist eine sehr komplexe Geschichte. Eigentlich ist es ein Film, der aus fünf Geschichten besteht, es gibt fünf Schauspieler, die verschiedene Rollen spielen und die einzigen, die uns ständig durch die Geschichte begleiten, sind die Hauptfigur und sein kleines Mädchen.



    Die anderen Schauspieler spielen mehrere Rollen, da es sich um eine komplexe Geschichte handelt, die sich nur schwer in ein paar Worten zusammenfassen lässt. Es ist immer dunkel in uns und in der Dunkelheit gibt es immer Überraschungen. Und so ist auch dieser Film, mit vielen Überraschungen, manchmal kann er einen erschrecken, manchmal zum Lachen bringen.” Neben Bogdan Dumitrache, der die Hauptrolle spielt, sind im Film auch die Darsteller Anca Androne, Luiza Gherghinescu, Gheorghe Ifrim, Rolando Matsangos und Silvana Mihai zu sehen. Das Drehbuch stammt von Gabriel Achim und Cosmin Manolache, das Bild von Adrian Iurchevici und die Produzenten des Films sind Anca Puiu und Smaranda Zărnoianu.

    Gabriel Achim’s film ‘Snowing Darkness had its world premiere in the ‘Rebels With A Cause competition selection at the 25th edition of PÖFF – Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, which took place at the end of November 2021. The festival, whose first edition was held in 1997 in the Estonian capital, is one of the most important cinematographic events in Europe, with one of the most visible competition sections in the region. ‘Snowing Darkness is produced by Mandragora, and its release in cinema halls in Romania is scheduled for the first part of the year.



    We talked to Gabriel Achim about the complicated birth process of his third feature film ‘Snowing Darkness: “Unfortunately, we are living in challenging times that should make us turn to the essentials, help us value time more, and seek quality more. But this has not happened, on the contrary, there has been a dilution of values, and the arts seem to become more and more useless, because people are slowly taking a distance from them. I could say that ‘Snowing Darkness is a film made almost independently, the very small funding did not allow us to have a large team or very many actors. But I’m used to it, and eventually it all came together, and I managed to make a movie that I do like a lot. Before I started working on this film, I had a project that had received funding through the EU Media program, it had a French co-producer, and it had won several international development awards through the festival circuit. It was a project that seemed to be my third feature film. Unfortunately, I did not manage to get funding from Romania, and I realized that it no longer made sense to apply to the National Center of Cinematography. I then had a discussion with film director Cristi Puiu, who, seeing me quite desperate because I could not carry on with that respective project, advised me to write a screenplay based on the situation I was in at that moment. I had two more weeks until the moment I was supposed to apply for funding, but I got mobilized and wrote the film script together with Cosmin Manolache, with whom I usually collaborate. When I edited the film, I had to give up certain things that I had in the initial script, because it would have been too complex, too focused on this idea of ​​provoking the film viewers, of making them get out of their comfort zone. I guess that had I left it in that initial form, I would have pushed too many spectators away. So, I reconsidered my script. I made a film with a complex structure, but a friendlier one and closer to my intentions, a film which, even if it challenges the spectators, will convey what I intended to get across. I can say that I made up for the lack of money through the enthusiasm of the team. I also had an exceptional set designer, Ana Gabriela Lemnaru, also a very professional team whom I also work with on the series Las Fierbinți.



    ‘Snowing Darkness tells the story of Teo, a director who rehearses with actors for a new project. The subject, autobiographical, is confusing from the beginning: the turmoil of a director who stages a play about the drama he experiences after the death of his little daughter, following an incurable disease. As the story progresses, story that has 5 working versions, uncertain episodes come to light, bordering on life and fiction and accentuating dilemmas.



    Here is Gabriel Achim with details: “It’s a very complex story. In fact, it is a film made up of 5 stories, there are 5 actors who play different roles, and the only ones who accompany us permanently throughout the story are the main character and his little girl. The other actors play several roles, since its a complex story, which is difficult to summarize in a few words. Its always dark inside us, and in the dark, you always have surprises. And so is this movie, with many surprises, sometimes it can scare you, other times it can make you laugh.



    Along with Bogdan Dumitrache, who has the main role, the cast of the film also includes the actors Anca Androne, Luiza Gherghinescu, Gheorghe Ifrim, Rolando Matsangos and Silvana Mihai. The screenplay is signed by Gabriel Achim and Cosmin Manolache, the image by Adrian Iurchevici and the film’s producers are Anca Puiu and Smaranda Zărnoianu.
