Interview with Romanian actor Levente Molnar about supporting role in Oscar-winning film Son of Saul

Son of Saul, the winner of this year’s
Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film has enjoyed wide coverage in Romania given
that the film features Romanian and Hungarian ethnic actor Levente Molnar. In
the film, he plays Abraham Warszawski, who is the best friend of the main
character, Saul Auslander. Born on March 10, 1976 in the northern Romanian city
of Baia Mare, Levente Molnar has been an actor at the Hungarian State Theatre
in Cluj Napoca since 2002. Before its Oscar win, Son of Saul already won prizes
in Cannes and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. Here is Levente
Molnar sharing with us his impressions:

All the changes occurring in my life are related to
friendship and those around me. They are linked to my work. The Cannes Festival
and the Golden Globes are past already…now it’s the Oscars. I don’t see the
reason why this should change me. These moments are reasons for transient joy.
The award has not come out of the blue, it is the merit of the director. We
worked as a team, and working in a team gives you more energy, makes you
overcome difficult moments easier. What keeps me down to earth is my work, I like
to work. All that is happening to me now, all this beautiful craze, when people
are enthusiastic about my work, will pass, and the next day brings you back to
normal, to daily activities and among people: life is not a state of perpetual
celebration.

Levente Molnar’s
links to filmmaking date as far back as his student days. He still works with
students, often featuring in their short-reel films because he loves meeting
new people. Right from the start, he divided his career between stage and film.

I can exist in both
settings. I like theatre, but I also like film. It offers something else.
Theatre gives the actor the chance of an immersion, in perfect circumstances,
to encourage introspection. One the other hand, he seeks to satisfy the
curiosity he has towards his colleagues and their work together, to test his
ability to work with his colleagues, to discover the challenges posed by a
stage director, to take a mutually agreed responsibility for all those goals.
These are typical for theatre. You get to know yourself a little bit better. As
for the film, you’re getting a bit lonelier out there, even when you do your
preparation work. You do not always have the chance to make rehearsals that are
so very intense, so thorough, as it happens in theatre. All that requires a lot
more confidence, ability to adapt yourself, to be efficient. The former is like
a hospital, the latter is like an ambulance. And you are expected to perform a
surgical operation at the same standards, in either case… The ambulance is on
the move, following zigzag routes…

As a full-time actor
at the Hungarian State Theatre in Cluj, Molnar has enjoyed the privilege of
working with a host of stage directors who left an indelible mark on his
career. But one such encounter was truly special to him, Molnar explained:

The man who gives
me oxygen in that environment is Silviu Purcarete, who took me closer to
theatre, so to say. He is like an oxygen bubble to me, every time we work
together. And I had this feeling from the very beginning, when we first worked
together in Pantagruel’s Sister-in-Law, or later when we did Gianni Schicchi,
Victor, and Children Rule the Roost. Every time, I have this special feeling
around him, he makes me feel free. I like doing theatre and he challenges me to
think differently, at the same time allowing me to be free. I feel I am safe
making a mistake.

Still, Molnar’s professional life does not
limit him to acting in plays and films:

It looks like I have a penchant for organising
things and that takes me to the Transylvania International Film Festival. I am
running some small-scale projects as part of the festival. There are two
projects I hold most dear. One of them is Manastur Open Air. The very moment I
moved into the studio the theatre made available for me, in the district of
Manastur-sub-Padure, in Cluj, I saw that green patch behind my block of flats.
And it was that green area that made me stay, and the graceful madness of Tudor
Giurgiu, Oana Giurgiu and of the people who work there, who took the challenge
and joined me in a project of screening films in Manastur, in an open-air area.
We started the project many years ago and people keep coming every year. I once
had a dream, shared by my theatre colleague Aron Dimeny, and our idea has been
accepted. It has become reality and is entitled 10 for Film. I hope we’ve
brought in new experiences – special encounters that have enriched people. We
work really hard to offer people such a chance.

The 10 for Film programme seeks to promote new
faces in the Romanian film industry. Ten of the most talented stage actors are
presented each year, at the Transylvania International Film Festival, to film
professionals as well as to the public at large.

Apart from these new projects carried out on
the sidelines of the Transylvania International Film Festival, Molnar is
responsible for the production stage of the Interferences International Theatre
Festival, built at the Hungarian State Theatre in Cluj. He is also involved in
film production, currently working with director Adrian Sitaru for Fixer and
Radu Mihaileanu for the feature film The History of Love. The broadcasting rights for Milhaileanu’s film
have been sold at the Berlin Film Festival and many distributors worldwide.

L’acteur Levente Molnár au Gala des Oscars

A l’heure qu’il est, beaucoup de monde sait déjà que le long-métrage hongrois « Son of Saul » (Le Fils de Saul) a gagné cette année l’Oscar du meilleur film en langue étrangère, en dehors de 43 autres prix et 37 nominations. Le film jouit depuis un certain temps déjà d’une attention particulière de la presse roumaine, parce que le Roumano-Hongrois Levente Molnár, qui incarne Abraham Warszawski, le meilleur ami du personnage principal, Saul Ausländer, fait partie du casting.

Né le 10 mars 1976 à Baia Mare (Nord), Levente Molnár est comédien au Théâtre magyar d’Etat de Cluj depuis 2002. Avant l’Oscar, « Le Fils de Saul » a déjà engrangé de grands prix à Cannes, aux Golden Globes… Après tant de succès, Levente Molnár essaie de rester les pieds sur terre…: « Tous les changements qui sont intervenus dans ma vie sont liés à des amitiés, aux gens de mon entourage. Tout à beaucoup trait à mon travail. Cannes, les Golden Globes, ce sont des moments passés. Maintenant, pour les Oscars, oui, il y a certains moments. Je ne vois pas pourquoi je devrais changer pour cela. Ces moments sont des raisons de joie passagères. Cela n’est pas tombé du ciel, et je ne suis pas le principal « coupable » de ce fait, mais le réalisateur. C’est un travail d’équipe, et j’y ai participé. Je ne peux pas nier que cela me donne certaines énergies ou que je ne traverse pas plus facilement certains moments… mais ces sentiments passeront aussi et ce qui me maintient les pieds sur terre, c’est que je travaille, que j’aime travailler. Avec tout ce qui nous arrive maintenant, toute cette belle folie, avec les réactions des gens vis-à-vis de notre travail, il y a un jour de l’après, avec la normalité, le quotidien, et l’homme. La vie n’est pas une fête continuelle. »

Levente Molnár est lié au monde du film depuis qu’il est étudiant. D’ailleurs il travaille même maintenant dans des courts métrages estudiantins, parce qu’il aime rencontrer de nouvelles gens. Il a d’emblée partagé sa carrière entre le théâtre et le film : « Je peux exister à ces deux endroits. J’aime le théâtre, j’aime aussi le film. Ils offrent des choses différentes. Le théâtre offre à l’acteur la chance d’une immersion, dans les meilleures conditions, tout d’abord dans soi-même, puis la curiosité par rapport aux collègues, la capacité de travailler avec vos collègues, la curiosité face aux défis présentés par un réalisateur, et assumer de commun accord ces buts, le travail assidu de laboratoire… tout cela est spécifique au théâtre. On peut se connaître un peu mieux. Dans le film, on est beaucoup plus solitaire, à un moment donné même pendant la formation/préparation. On n’a pas toujours la chance des répétitions si intenses, si approfondies, comme c’est le cas dans le théâtre. Cela vous demande une dose beaucoup plus grande de confiance, d’adaptabilité, de rendement… L’un, c’est un hôpital, l’autre, une ambulance. Et l’opération, on doit la réussir au même niveau. L’ambulance est aussi en mouvement, sur des virages… »

En tant que comédien du Théâtre magyar d’Etat de Cluj, Levente Molnár a eu la joie de travailler avec plusieurs metteurs en scène qui ont mis leur empreinte sur sa carrière, mais une de ces rencontres est plus particulière : «Celui qui me donne à moi une bouffée d’oxygène dans cet environnement, qui est responsable du fait que j’ai quelque chose à voir avec le théâtre, c’est monsieur Silviu Purcărete. C’est une bouffée d’oxygène à chaque fois. Et ce à commencer par le spectacle « La Bru de Pantagruel », d’après Rabelais, quand nous avons travaillé pour la première fois ensemble ou « Gianni Schicchi » ou « Victor ou les enfants au pouvoir » – voilà les spectacles où j’ai joué. Et j’ai cette expérience d’un homme près duquel je me sens libre, j’aime faire du théâtre, il me provoque à penser d’une manière qui me laisse la liberté, je sens que je peux me tromper en toute sécurité. »

La vie de Levente Molnár, ce n’est pas seulement jouer du théâtre et faire des films : « Il semble que j’ai aussi un penchant pour l’organisation, et cela me mène vers le Festival international de film Transilvania. J’ai de petits projets que je réalise dans le festival. Deux projets dans lesquels je mets du cœur. L’un, c’est Mănăştur Open Air. Au moment où j’ai emménagé dans le studio de fonction du théâtre, qui est à Mănăştur Sub Pădure, à Cluj, j’ai vu cet espace vert derrière l’immeuble. Et cet espace est coupable de ce que j’aie décidé d’y rester. Et la belle folie de Tiudor Giurgiu, de Oana Giurgiu et des gens qui y travaillent, c’est qu’ils ont accepté ce défi et depuis quelques années, nous faisons des projections de films là-haut, à Mănăştur, en plein air. Avec mon collègue Aron Dimeny, nous avons fait un rêve une fois et notre idée a été acceptée. Cela s’appelle « 10 pour un film ». J’espère avoir apporté de nouvelles expériences, j’espère aussi avoir apporté des rencontres, et que les gens se soient enrichis… Nous travaillons beaucoup pour offrir cette chance ».

Le programme « 10 pour un film » se propose de promouvoir de nouveaux visages dans le film roumain. 10 des comédiens les plus talentueux sont présentés annuellement, dans le cadre du festival TIFF, aux professionnels du monde du film et au public. Outre ces deux projets inclus dans le Festival international de film Transilvania, dans le même festival, Levente Molnár fait aussi de l’interprétation simultanée au besoin. En plus, il se charge de la production du festival international de théâtre Interferenţe, organisé par le Théâtre magyar d’Etat de Cluj. Il travaille aussi dans la production de film, et collabore, entre autres, avec le réalisateur Adrian Sitaru pour « Fixeur » et avec Radu Mihăileanu au long-métrage « History of Love », dont les droits de diffusion ont récemment été vendus, dans le cadre du Festival du film de Berlin, à plusieurs distributeurs du monde entier. BERLIN: Der Vorsitzende der Bukarester Abgeordnetenkammer, Valeriu Zgonea, hat sich am Sonntag in Berlin an einer internationalen Parlamentstagung zur Bekämpfung des Antisemitismus beteiligt. Er leitete die Plenarsitzung zum Thema Offizielle Antworten und Antworten von der Regieung auf den Antisemitismus“. An dem Treffen beteiligten sich auch der Erstvizepräsident der Europäischen Kommission Frans Timmermans, die deutsche Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel, Bundestagspräsident Norbert Lammert und UNESCO-Generlaleiterin Irina Bokova. Zu den Themen der Konferenz zählte auch die antisemitistische Rede im Internet und Beispiele zur Bekämpfung des Antisemitismus in den Moslemgemeinden.

BUKAREST: Eine neue rumänische Mannschaft ist den Patrouillemissionen im Mittelmeer zur Bekämpfung der illegalen Migration beigetreten. Laut dem Innenministerium wird sich ein Eurocopter Hubschrauber des Generalinspektorats für Luftfahrt mit 4 Piloten an dem gemeinsamen Einsatz Poseidon Rapid Intervention“ der europäischen Agentur FRONTEX gemeinsam mit weiteren Boden-, See- und Lufteinsatzkräften aus 26 Ländern beteiligen. Die rumänische Mannschaft wird in den nächsten zwei Wochen auf der griechischen Insel Samos im Einsatz sein. Rumänien leistet einen beträchtlichen Beitrag zu den FRONTEX Einsätzen zur Sicherung der EU-Grenzen. Es beteiligt sich an Missionen zur Bekämpfung der Illegalen Einwanderung im maritimen Bereich Italiens und Griechenlands sowie an der Grenze zwischen Serbien und Mazedonien.

BUKAREST: Der ungarische Spielfilm Son of Saul“, in dem der rumänische Schauspieler ungarischer Abstammung Levente Molnár mitspielt und der einen Oscar für den besten ausländischen Film erhalten hat, hatte an diesem Wochenende seine rumänische Premiere. Der Debutfilm des jungen Regisseurs László Nemes gewann zahlreiche internationale Preise und stellt die Geschichte eines iudischen Gefangenen aus Ungarn, der im Konzentrationslager Auschwitz von den Nazis zur Arbeit gezwungen wurde. Der Schauspieler des Ungarischen Staatstheaters in Klausenburg, Levente Molnár hat eine Schlüsselrolle in diesem Film, wo er Sauls besten Freund darstellt.

„Preise sind flüchtige Augenblicke der Freude“ – ein Gespräch mit dem Schauspieler Levente Molnár

Der Spielfilm Son of Saul“/Sauls Sohn“ ist bekanntlich der Gewinner der Kategorie Bester fremdsprachiger Film“ bei den diesjährigen Oscar-Preisen. Die ungarische Produktion erhielt insgesamt 43 Preise und wurde 37mal für verschiedene Auszeichnungen nominiert. Das Kinodebüt von László Nemes erfreute sich einer gro‎ßen Aufmerksamkeit in den Medien, da in der ungarischen Produktion der in Rumänien wirkende Darsteller Levente Molnár Abraham Warszawski, den besten Freund der Hauptfigur, Saul Ausländer, verkörpert.

Levente Molnár wurde am 10. März 1976 im nordrumänischen Baia Mare geboren. Seit 2002 ist er beim Ungarischen Staatstheater im mittelrumänischen Klausenburg tätig. Vor der Oscar-Preisverleihung hatte Sauls Sohn“ einen Riesenerfolg beim Filmfestival in Cannes und bei den Golden Globes gefeiert. Levente Molnár versucht dennoch, sich vom Erfolg nicht blenden zu lassen:

Die wichtigen Momente in meinem Leben haben mit meinen Freunden, mit den Menschen um mich herum zu tun. Sehr viel auch mit meiner Arbeit. Die Filmfestspiele in Cannes und die Golden Globes sind vorbei — jetzt sprechen wir von den Oscars, aber das ist auch ein flüchtiger Augenblick in meinem Leben. Ich verstehe nicht, warum mich das verändern soll. Alle sind flüchtige Augenblicke der Freude. Zudem war der Preis nicht wie vom Himmel gefallen und er ist nicht mir zu verdanken, sondern dem Regisseur. Es handelt sich um eine Teamarbeit und ich war auch Teil davon. Ich kann nicht verneinen, dass mir der Preis Flügel gibt und dass er meine Stimmung stark beeinflusst. Diese Erlebnisse sind aber vergänglich. Ich stehe mit beiden Beinen fest auf der Erde, dank meiner Arbeit, ich liebe meine Arbeit. Wir, die Besetzung des Films, erleben jetzt verrückte Momente, es ist ein schöner Wahnsinn, alle reagieren so schön auf unseren Erfolg, es kommt aber ein neuer Tag mit seinen normalen Erlebnissen, mit dem Alltag eigentlich. Das Leben besteht doch nicht aus Feiern.“

Levente Molnár hat seine ersten Kontakte mit der Filmwelt als Student gehabt. Er schlie‎ßt sich als erfolgreicher Darsteller zahlreichen Kurzfilmen an, die von Studenten produziert werden. Das, weil er neue Leute kennlernen mag. Vom Anfang an hat er zudem seine Zeit zwischen Theater und Film aufgeteilt:

Ich kann in beiden Plätzen existieren. Ich mag das Theater, ich mag gleicherma‎ßen auch den Film. Das Theater bietet dem Darsteller die einzigartige Chance, unter perfekten Umständen in sich selbst hineinblicken zu können. Für ein bemerkenswertes Erlebnis sorgen auch die Neugier gegenüber Kollegen, die Zusammenarbeit, die Fähigkeit, mit Kollegen zusammenzuarbeiten, die Neugier gegenüber der Neuigkeit und die Herausforderungen, mit denen der Regisseur die Darsteller konfrontiert, das Anstreben von gemeinsamen Zielen, die emsige Arbeit — das bedeutet, Theater zu machen. Man kann sich im Theater selber besser kennenlernen. Während der Dreharbeiten an einem Film bleibt man eher einsam, auch bei den Vorbereitungen. Das Theater bietet hingegen die Chance, sich an intensiven, vertieften Proben zu beteiligen. Das Theater erfordert daher viel mehr Vertrauen, Anpassungsfähigkeit, Höchstleistung. Es ist wie der Unterschied zwischen Krankenhaus und Rettungswagen. Der Rettungswagen muss sich bewegen, manchmal auf Serpentinenstra‎ßen.“

Als Darsteller des Ungarischen Staatstheaters im mittelrumänischen Klausenburg durfte Levente Molnár mit Regisseuren arbeiten, die seine Karriere stark geprägt haben. An eine diese Zusammenarbeit erinnert er sich mit besonderer Zuneigung:

Die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Regisseur Silviu Purcărete war sozusagen mein Sauerstoff, er ist dafür schuldig, dass ich auch ein Theaterdarsteller bin. Am Anfang gab es »Cumnata lui Pantagruel« (»Die Schwägerin von Pantagruel«), unser erstes Stück zusammen, dann folgten »Gianni Schicchi« und »Victor sau copiii la putere« (»Victor oder Kinder an der Macht«). In seiner Anwesenheit fühle ich mich frei, er stellt mich vor die Herausforderung, frei zu denken, er gibt mir die Freiheit der Entscheidung, neben ihm habe ich das Gefühl, dass ich auch Fehler machen und dennoch selbstsicher bleiben kann.“

Das Berufsleben von Levente Molnár bedeutet mehr als Film und Theater. Dazu der Darsteller:

Anscheinend habe ich eine Ader für organisatorische Arbeit. Im Rahmen des Internationalen Filmfestivals »Transilvania« setze ich ein paar Projekte um. Es handelt sich um zwei Projekte, die mir nah am Herzen liegen. Eines davon ist Mănăştur Open Air. Als ich in die Studiowohnung des Theaters eingezogen bin, die im Viertel Mănăştur Sub Pădure in Klausenburg liegt, habe ich die Grünanlage hinter dem Wohngebäude gesehen. Sie ist dafür schuldig, dass ich dort geblieben bin. Und dieser schöne Wahnsinn von Tudor Giurgiu, Oana Giurgiu, von allen Menschen, die dort arbeiten, besteht darin, dass sie eine gro‎ße Herausforderung angenommen haben; seit einigen Jahren zeigen wir Filme da oben, im Freien, im Mănăştur-Viertel, das auf einem Hügel liegt. Mein Theaterkollege Áron Dimény und ich hatten einmal einen Traum, den wir verwirklicht haben: das Projekt »10 pentru film« (»10 Menschen für einen Film«). Ich hoffe, damit neue Erfahrungen ermöglicht zu haben, viele Menschen bereichert zu haben. Wir tun unser Bestes, um den anderen diese Chance zu geben.“

Das Programm 10 für einen Film“ setzt sich zum Ziel, Nachwuchsdarsteller aus Rumänien zu fördern. Zehn der begabtesten Theaterdarsteller werden jedes Jahr beim Filmfestival Transilvania“ den Profis aus der Brache und dem Publikum vorgestellt. Neben diesen Projekten sichert Levente Molnár bei den Festspielen auch das Simultandolmetschen, wenn notwendig. Zudem ist er für die Produktion des Internationalen Theaterfestivals Interferenţe“ zuständig, das vom Ungarischen Staatstheater in Klausenburg organisiert wird. Die Filmproduktion ist ihm auch nicht fremd, er hat mit dem Filmemacher Adrian Sitaru bei der Produktion Fixeur“ und mit Radu Mihăileanu beim Spielfilm History of love“ zusammengearbeitet. Die Vertriebsrechte des letzteren wurden auf der 66. Berlinale weltweit verkauft.

MEETING – Romanias president Klaus Iohannis is today meeting the president of the Palestinian Authority Mahmud Abbas. Iohannis on Sunday started a tour of Israel and the Palestinian territories. In Jerusalem, the president had talks with his counterpart, Reuven Rivlin, with Prime Minister Bejamin Netanyahu and with Knesset Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein. Additionally, Klaus Iohannis visited the Wailing Wall and met with representatives of the Romanian-born Israeli community.

DEFENCE – The Romanian Intelligence Service has said that the Constitutional Court ruling will have a certain impact on national security, given the connection between preventing threats to national security and combating organized crime. Recently the Constitutional Court has ruled against the constitutional character of an article in the Criminal Procedure Code allowing the Romanian Intelligence Service and other secret service agencies to phone-tap people investigated by anti-corruption prosecutors. The Court claims that the Romanian Intelligence Service has no remit in criminal investigations. Romanian Intelligence chief Eduard Hellvig said that crimes such as acts of espionage and treason, terrorism, cross-border organized crime, counterproliferation, cyber crime, and, last but not least, acts of corruption, which are all serious threats to national security, will no longer be handled using technical equipment used by the Romanian Intelligence Service. Eduard Hellvig believes that the ruling will also affect a series of court cases, particularly those dealing with threats to national security. The countrys Superior Defence Council is to convene in an emergency meeting on Friday to address the effects of the Constitutional Court ruling on wiretapping.

MILITARY – Some 130 military from the Republic of Moldova and the United States are these days taking part in the 2016 Agile Hunter joint military exercise. Hosted by the Training Centre of the Moldova Motorized Infantry Brigade in Balti, the exercise is aimed at approaching hybrid warfare threats, as well as boosting cooperation with foreign partners. The drills will end on March 19, and are part of a training programme running for four years. Moldovan Defence Minister Anatol Salaru has recently said cooperation with NATO member states, including Romania, will contribute to expanding Moldovas military experience, given the high security risks in the region.

JHA – Justice and Home Affairs Ministers of EU Member States are today meeting in Brussels. The main point on the agenda is migration. The Justice and Home Affairs Council will look at progress reported with respect to the European Commissions December recommendation to modify the Schengen border code, which provides for setting up a European Border Watch. In another development, the Hungarian Government today declared a “state of crisis against the backdrop of increasing migration flows on its territory, as a reaction to the harsher rules introduced by others states confronted with large numbers of immigrants. On Wednesday, Macedonia closed down its border with Greece, after Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia announced new border restrictions. Thousands of immigrants are blocked on the Macedonian border and over 1,000 are in a camp on the Serbian border.

HANDBALL – The Romanian womens team on Wednesday defeated the defending European, world and Olympic champions Norway on home turf, 25-20, in a match counting towards preliminary Group 1 of the European Championship due in December. The return leg will be played on Sunday in Stavanger. Following this result, Romania, bronze medallist at the World Championships of 2015 and coached by Swedish Tomas Ryde, has largely secured its qualification, ranking first in the group tables after three matches. Norway is ranked 2nd, followed by Belarus and Lithuania. Romania will also take part in the pre-Olympic tournament in Aarhus, Denmark, scheduled for March 18-20, alongside the host country, Uruguay and Montenegro.

FILM – “Son of Saul, the recipient of this years Oscar award for best foreign language film and featuring Romanian actor Levente Molnar, is premiered on Friday in Romania. “Son of Saul is the debut film of filmmaker Laszlo Nemes and has scooped numerous international awards. The film tells the story of a Jewish prisoner in Hungary, forced to work for the Nazis at the Auschwitz gas chambers. While working in one of the furnaces, Saul discovers the body of a boy he suspects to be his own son, and embarks on an impossible journey, wanting to save the body from cremation and to give the boy a proper funeral. Levente Molnar, an actor with the State Theatre in Cluj Napoca, plays Sauls best friend in the film.

On Friday the High Court of Cassation and Justice decided on the investigation without detention and pending trial of the Liberal senator Doina Tudor, accused of being accessory to bribe taking. In the same case, her former husband, Daniel Tudor, is being investigated under house arrest. He was the vice-president of the Financial Monitoring Authority.

The US Ambassador to Bucharest Hans Klemm attended a conference in the city of Cluj on security issues, and stated that the world at present is rife with threats, and that Russia destabilizes European security. The American diplomat has recalled that Moscow has dubbed NATO its main military danger, saying that the anti-ballistic missile shield, elements of which are being deployed in Romania, was a threat to global stability. Mr. Klemm underlined the defensive nature of the shield, and said that the US would continue to bring military materiel to Europe in order to bolster its capacity as a key element of NATO.

22 countries, including Romania, will take part in the NATO exercise dubbed Anaconda, the most important in Poland’s modern history. According to high-ranking Polish military officials, over 27,000 military personnel will take part in the exercise between 7 and 17 June, scheduled ahead of the NATO Warsaw summit in early July. One other exercise, Saber Strike, is scheduled in parallel. It aims to improve mobilization in the Baltic countries, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany and Poland. The exercises aim to consolidate the eastern flank of the alliance after the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

The speaker of the Romanian Senate, Calin Popescu Tariceanu, said that the solution in the case of the Romanian Public Television, currently facing big financial problems, would be the modification of legislation, so as to declare the institution insolvent. He added that further measures are needed such as the efficient collection of the television license fee, the reanalysis of costs for the use of relays that belong to the National Radio Communications Society and supplementing the space allotted to advertisements during the television broadcasts. On the other hand, the leader of the People’s Movement Party, Eugen Tomac, announced his party did not support the idea of merging the public television and radio in one institution. He said that, in comparison with the public radio, which reported success and managed to remain in the top of trust regarding transparency and editorial policy, the national television has been managed badly in the past 20 years, with a few exceptions. Over the past days, several political leaders have rejected the idea of merger and of amending the law on the organization and functioning of the public radio and television.

The feature film “Son of Saul”, with Romanian actor Levente Molnar on the credits, as well as Paolo Sorrentino’s film Youth, featuring Romanian actress and model Madalina Ghenea, have been nominated for best foreign film at the Cesar awards, the most prestigious in French cinema. The awards will be granted on Friday night. Son of Saul has also been nominated in the Best Foreign Film category at the 2016 Oscar Academy Awards. The Hungarian-French co-production got the jurys grand prize in Cannes last year.

12 more people have died of the flu this past week in Romania, bringing up the death toll to 33, according to public health authorities. 31 cases have been confirmed of the AH1N1 strain, known as swine flu, as well as two cases of the AH3 strain.

The Swiss Italian Gianni Infantino was elected Friday to a 4-year term as president of FIFA. Infantino (46), the current secretary general of UEFA, thus became the first high official of the European forum to lead FIFA.
