    Prepared for the future

The Polytechnic University in Bucharest played host to SpaceFest, an event dedicated to the exploration of the cosmic space. It was a unique experience for the several thousand youngsters who participated in the event. Dumitru Prunariu, the only Romanian astronaut to have flown in the cosmic space, Nicole Stott, of the USA, the tenth woman who flew in space and Sara Sabry of Egypt, the first African, Arab and Egyptian woman who reached the cosmic space, came up with thought-provoking stories…

Google Maps and the Weather Forecast are also the outcome of the cosmic space research as well as other contributions to terrestrial activities. The traditional approaches are no longer used, already, because of their inefficiency. These are domains where the Romanians play an important part, even though our official presence in space has not been recorded since Dumitru Prunariu.

Attending the event, Dumitru Prunariu told Radio Romania International the following:

“Here, at the Polytechnic University in Bucharest, in an auditorium with a seating capacity for 1,200 people, I had the chance of a very interesting encounter, with youngsters, with children, with students, and not only did they listen carefully to what the three astronauts told them, the people who are here today, but also they asked very interesting questions. We have regular meetings also as part of the Cosmic Space Explorers Association, it is the professional association of astronauts and cosmonauts, It is true that the woman astronaut from Egypt is not yet a member of this association, she was on a brief, ballistic flight, she spent ten days in imponderability, whereas we, the others, and Nicole Stott is one of us, travelled further and we flew more, ours is a different experience, yet any cosmic flight, no matter how short it is, opens other perspectives and anyone has unusual things to tell, things he experienced and about which his colleagues may not know, about their personal experience, about their own feelings, about their interaction they had with the people, after the cosmic flight. At the moment, apart from the governmental agreements between certain states, companies, organizations training astronaut, and they are only three in the world, the Americans, the Russians, the Chinese, as we speak, there are also private agreements. There are astronaut broker companies that have begun to send, for millions of dollars, it is true, people in the cosmic space, while spatial tourism has developed significantly. So we might have the surprise to see that a second Romanian may be a member of this category.”

It is also from Dumitru Prunariu that we found out there are also plans we can call interstellar.

“The Moon is an outpost for the flight to Mars. As part of the Artemis program, the American program that has already kicked off, which has already sent a test spaceship around the world and which next year will send a first human crew around the Moon in a bid to test the equipment, testing the spaceship, testing the environment where those people will work, all that is only the beginning. In 2025, the first moon landing is scheduled as part of the new Artemis program. And that is only a beginning. Because this time we are not going to fly to the Moon only to return from there to the Earth, but we will fly there to stay. It is a very important message, the fact that the human beings will stay there. Of course, they will roll some of the crews, with certain permanent bases that will be built around the Moons South Pole, there will be, in the foreseeable future a space station orbiting the Moon, at will be a permanent hub for the astronauts who come from the Earth and descend on the Moon, returning on the Earth. Also, there will be a scientific research base for the moon environment, and all that will prepare, for the future the flights to Mars. “

Nicole Stott, the tenth woman who reached the cosmic space, told us that, although she spent a little over a hundred days in space, she would like to return there for one more day, at least, as joy, curiosity and delight are the emotions that are permanently experienced.

“A hundred and four days in space, it was not long enough. I mean, I really felt like the time flew by, I could not believe it when it was the time to come home and I wish I could go back and have at least one more day in space, that would be nice. I was the tenth woman to perform a spacewalk, I didnt think about that at the time, I didnt know that was the number, I think the point is that a rocket-ship doesnt care if youre a boy or a girl, and so we all just have to be doing our best with the work that we do and I wish I could go back and have at least one more day in space, that would be nice. Weve shown our women may be capable even more on this mission and I think we just need to be encouraging more young women to pursue these kinds of things. Even when things were going, you know, when the alarm was going off, or, whatever, I think it was more anxiousness than a fear because we were trained so much how to deal with those kinds of things. I would absolutely repeat my space journeys, you know, on one hand I would be the way it was, you know, with the crews that I was with, the experience that we had, also to be able to fly again and experience maybe something a little different from a mission.”

Sara Sabry of Egypt is the first African, Arab and Egyptian woman who reached the cosmic space. She attended the SpaceFest and shared with us the joy of signaling a change.

“Its an incredible honor to be representing my country for the very first time in space and to be the first Arab woman to do this. It shows you how much things are changing. Finally, we have a transition. I grew up not seeing someone that looked like me that was able to do things like this, so for the very first time Im so honored and grateful. I am just happy to have the next generation see that people are capable of doing this. Women in our side of the world can do things, can do something like this. Seeing earth from space really changes your perspective on the whole world we havent biologically evolved to see earth from space or, like, from the outside, so when it does happen it breaks the reality. “

And, if you have never thought of what it would be like to live or travel to another planet, it is high time you did that !

    July 28, 2022 UPDATE

UKRAINE The Romanian foreign ministry firmly criticised the move of
the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, who posted
on social media a map assigning current Ukrainian territories to Romania and
other neighbouring countries. The foreign ministry regards such attitudes as
part of the Russian Federation’s propaganda and disinformation campaign, which
has intensified since the start of the illegal and illegitimate war against
Ukraine. Such ‘proposals’ and ‘analyses’ concerning the random resetting of
national borders and promoting violations of international laws are just failed
attempts to justify Russia’s breaches of the international order based on
rules. The institution reiterates Romania’s full support for the independence,
sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally
recognised borders, and once again condemns Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked
military aggression against that country. Romania is and will remain a partner
of Ukraine and reconfirms its full support and deep compassion for the
Ukrainian people, the victim of a brutal aggression, the institution’s news release
    also reads.

FUNDS The prime minister Nicolae Ciucă has said Romania’s absorption
rate of European funds as part of the 2014-2020 financial exercise stands at
64.5%, a level similar to that of Germany and only slightly lower than France,
but ahead of older member states like Belgium (59%) and Italy, Spain and The
Netherlands (each with a little over 56%). According to Ciucă, Romania absorbed
22 billion Euros out of the 35 billion it is allocated in the 2014-2020 period.

DROUGHT Drought has so far affected 150,000 hectares of farmland in
20 different counties across Romania, said the agriculture ministry, based on
daily reports on the state of the crops. The irrigation systems are struggling
to cope, owing to the drop in the level of the water used to feed the
irrigation stations. The biggest such station, in Brăila county, in the
south-east, was shut down because of the low Danube water flow. The station was
providing water for 250,000 hectares of land in the region. The water flow of
the river Prut, in the east, is also dropping, having already reached a record
low level. Agriculture minister Petre Daea said the animal breeding sector is
    also affected by drought.

WHISTLE-BLOWERS The president of Romania Klaus Iohannis Thursday sent
back to Parliament for reconsideration the Law on the protection of whistle-blowers,
stating that some of the legislative solutions must be revised. Previously, a coalition
of 20 NGOs, civil associations and trade unions, as well as whistle-blowers,
had sent an open letter to the president, urging him not to sign the bill into law.
Civil society organisations argue that in the form passed in Parliament, the
act reduces the protection mechanisms for whistle-blowers, and Romania risks
infringement procedures for the selective transposition of the relevant EU
Directive. Save Romania Union, in opposition, also called on Iohannis to send
the law back for urgent reconsideration, stating that the current text
dissuades corruption reporting and poses a major risk of Romania being left
without the funding under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. In
mid-July the Constitutional Court had dismissed USR party’s complaint
    concerning the law, as unconstitutional.

DRILL Over 20 aircraft from 7 NATO member states Thursday took part
in a joint drill as part of the enhanced Vigilance Activities – eVA headed by
NATO AIRCOM based in Germany. According to the defence ministry, the goal of
the exercise is to prove NATO’s capacity to plan, coordinate and execute a
complex air space security mission in the event of any type of attack or threat
on Allied territory. In response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, NATO significantly
enhanced its defence and deterrence capability, including by means of
strengthening its presence on its eastern flank. (AMP)

    Inside Romania

100 years before mankind made it to
the Moon, the famous French Sci-Fi writer Jules Verne in 1865 had published his
inspired novel ‘From the Earth to the Moon’, describing the adventure of three men
who landed on the Moon in a projectile shot from a cannon.

Today this is just one of the
stories people are recollecting while visiting the Space Adventure exhibition
open in Bucharest. One of the exhibition’s dark rooms houses a simulator, where
visitors can see what a real space flight is like, and what astronauts actually
see through the windows of a space shuttle.

    Visitors embarking on such a
virtual journey to outer space by means of the aforementioned exhibition can
admire a replica of the projectile described in Jules Verne’s novel or a series
of images from the movies inspired by his books because as the exhibition shows
there are a lot of similarities between Jules Verne’s books and NASA’s Apollo programmes. While visiting the
exhibition one may learn about the pioneers of space exploration, be they
scientists, such as Herman Oberth and Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky or writers like
    HG Wells.

The Russian scientist was the first
to come up with the idea that the best vehicle for space exploration would be a
multi-stage rocket fueled with liquid hydrogen and oxygen. Von Braun’s ferry
rocket is one of the numerous exhibits on view at Space Adventure where the
Apollo Moon landing takes pride of place. Visitors simply cannot take their
eyes from the amazing collections with hundreds of objects belonging to the US
Space and Rocket Center, which were used or brought back by various NASA
    missions.

There are on view moon rocks, space
suits as well as accurate replicas of the rockets and space capsules and modules.
There are also humorous aspects to this exhibition, illustrated by a club,
Apollo 14 Commander Alan Shepard used to hit two golf balls on the surface of
the Moon. The exhibition includes a special area for those who may want to put
on a space suit, or see for themselves what life in an astronaut training camp
is like or how one can fly a space shuttle. Nicolae Cioca took his two
    grandsons to the exhibition.

    Nicolae Cioca: They saw the
commercial on TV, saw the posters in the street and begged me to bring them
here. Both are space enthusiasts and want to see the exhibition again. They are
in the flight simulator right now. Of course I recommend the exhibition as I
haven’t seen anything like this before.

Alina Savu was in charge of the
space flight simulator a place, which makes the delight of all the children
    visiting the Space Adventure exhibition.

Alina Savu: I am going to
present the 5D simulator, a zero-gravity simulator meant to show the little
ones how difficult a space mission can be and also to feel how the human body
is floating in space. We also have the Multi Axis Trainer, which simulates the
experience that astronauts may have when they lose control of the spaceship
while leaving the atmosphere. There is also a fighter plane simulator, which
can also simulate a dogfight and since these simulators are connected, kids can
compete with each other. The VR simulators that we have here, can create via
virtual reality, a space journey from take off to landing. Here kids can see
stars, planets a nebula, and even a black hole.

We asked Alina Savu how visitors
    react after a simulator ride.

Alina Savu: Most of them are
very delighted. They are curious and eager to try everything, even the little
ones; the five-year olds, for instance would like to try the Multi Axis
Trainer. Children have a positive reaction about every simulator and so have
    their parents!

For many of us, Space Adventure -
an exhibition whose personnel is dressed like the future astronauts currently
training at Space and Rocket Center – is an event definitely worth seeing.
