Romania’s magical debut at EURO 2024

Even the most optimistic supporters of the Romanian national football team did not believe, before the match with Ukraine, from EURO 2024, that their team could achieve such a brilliant victory. Somehow there was this hope that the Romanian footballers would have a good match that should erase from memory the poor game with no results of the last few years, but nothing more than that. Edward Iordănescu’s national team was coming after a qualification campaign in which they did not shine, but they did not lose a single match, which created some expectations, enough to bring over 40 thousand Romanians to the stands of the Allianz Arena stadium in Munich. And, surprise: the team was not a disappointment! After a start in which Ukraine controlled the game, not posing any danger to the Romanian goal, the first goal was scored in the 29th minute following a shot from outside the box sent by Nicolae Stanciu directly into the top corner of the Ukrainian goal. The Romanians braced up and attacked more insistently.

Stanciu then sent the ball into the crossbar, from a corner kick, and Romania ended the first half with strength and confidence. The second half started in the same spirit. The Romanian footballers combined more and more accurately, they were the first to reach the ball, and the individual technique made the difference, with Denis Drăguş and Dennis Man outshining the others in this respect. The score became 2 to 0 in the 53rd minute, thanks to a shot on the run by Răzvan Marin that tricked the Ukrainian goalkeeper Andri Lunin. Four minutes later the score became 3 to 0, after an individual action by Man finalized by Drăguş. Then several players were changed in both teams. Romania’s game lost a bit of its consistency, and the Ukrainians became more menacing, trying to score at least one goal. But that was not the case, so the match ended with the score 3 to 0, marking the most decisive Romanian victory in a final tournament. UEFA designated the captain of the Romanian team, Nicolae Stanciu the best player of the match.

Stanciu: “I think that, after the birth of my girls, this is the happiest day. I think that what I have experienced today cannot be repeated, it is incomparable”.

The striker Denis Drăguş was Iordănescu’s secret weapon. His individual play made the difference, often unbalancing the Ukrainian defense.

Drăguş: “You have to believe in us. We hope that we have given the Romanians what they deserved, what they expected… it’s incredible!”

In the other Group E match, Slovakia defeated Belgium 1-0 in what was the biggest upset of the European Championship so far. Thus, before the second stage, Romania occupies first place in the group. On Friday, in Düsseldorf, Slovakia will face Ukraine, and on Saturday, in Cologne, the Romanian eleven will meet Belgium.

The Romanian footballers met Bulgaria in a friendly in Bucharest on Tuesday. The match ended in a goaless draw and the Romanians managed a better first half with a series of interesting combinations, which sadly they were unable to capitalize on.

In the second half of the game, the visitors put on a couple of bold attacks and tested the abilities of the Romanian goalie who managed to promptly intervene several times during the game.

Romania even benefitted a penalty shot half into the game after a challenge on skipper Stanciu. Dennis Man tried to fire home but his shot was saved by the Bulgarian goalkeeper.

The match ended nil-all and Romania hasn’t defeated Bulgaria for the past 35 years. Their last victory was in May 1989, when Romania managed a one-nil win in Bucharest which counted towards the 190 World Cup qualifiers.

On Friday, the team coached by Edward Iordănescu will be having the last friendly before the aforementioned prestigious tournament. They will be playing in Bucharest the selection of Lichtenstein, which can prove to be a redoubtable opponent, allowing our side to hone their attack and defence skills.

In Germany, Romania will be playing in Group E together with Ukraine, Belgium and Slovakia. Their first match at EURO 2024 will be on June 17 in Munich against Ukraine. Ukraine ended in a goaless draw their latest training match, against Germany in Nuremberg on Monday. Our footballers will be up against Belgium in Cologne on June 22 and take on Slovakia in Frankfurt four days later.

Romania’s national eleven clinched a 2-0 away win against Iceland on
Thursday in a match counting towards the Group J of the World Cup 2022
    preliminaries.

The win comes after four consecutive defeats in two official games
against Germany and Armenia, and two friendlies against England and Georgia.

Dennis Man put Romania in the lead on 47 minutes and Nicolae Stanciu
added a second 7 minutes from time. The trainees of headcoach Mirel Radoi have
thus taken revenge after the 1-2 defeat last autumn in Reykjavik in the playoffs
    for EURO 2020.

The Romanians seemed to have had a good control over the game and their
technical superiority was visible with bold and speedy actions almost all
throughout the match. Dennis Man put the
visitors into the lead after the break, then Ianis Hagi fired home on the 70th
minute, shortly after his entry but had his goal cancelled for a
challenge. Romania sealed the points on the
83rd minute after Hagi had fed Stanciu and the latter scored the
    victory goal for the visitors.

    We can say the match
against Iceland has been the best show put up by the Romanians since Mirel
Radoi took the helm. Now our footballers need to prove the game in Reykjavik
was not an accident and they can do it against Lichtenstein in Bucharest on
    Sunday.

They will next take on North Macedonia in Skopje on Wednesday. Until
then Romania continues to rank fourth in Group J with only 6 points. Armenia
tops the table with 10 points, followed by Germany with 9 and North Macedonia
with 7. Iceland is last with 3 points. At the end of the preliminaries, the
first side in the group’s ranking is qualified whereas the second side goes
    into playoffs.
