    Romania won five medals at the European Cadet and Junior Fencing Championships 2025 in Antalya, Turkey. In the juniors category, the women’s sabre team, comprising Rosemarie Benciu, Amalia Covaliu, Catinca Dumitru and Anastasia Fusea, have won the gold, while in men’s sabre Vlad Covaliu won the silver, as did Emma Şonţ, in the women’s epee. In the cadet competitions, Amalia Covaliu won the silver medal in sabre, and Natalia Constantin won the bronze in epee.

     

    Romania’s rugby team lost the semi-final of the Rugby Europe Championship, which it played away from home against Georgia on Sunday. Georgia won 43-5, and also secured the Antim Ivireanu Cup, a trophy reflecting the results of the direct matches between the 2 teams. In the other semi-final, Portugal lost to Spain, 42-31, on Saturday, in Lisbon. Georgia and Spain will thus fight for the trophy, while Romania and Portugal will compete for third place, in the finals scheduled for Saturday, March 15. The 2 teams have already faced each other in the current edition of the competition, in the group stage, in Botoşani. Portugal won 34-6. Romania’s qualification for the semi-finals of the Rugby Europe Championship after victories against Germany and Belgium in the group stage, secured the country’s ticket for the 2027 World Cup, which will be held in Australia.

     

    Over the weekend, matches were held counting for the 29th round of the Romanian football Super League, the last but one in the regular season. On Friday, in Clinceni, Oţelul Galaţi defeated Unirea Slobozia 1-0, while in Sfântu Gheorghe Sepsi OSK tied 1-all against CFR Cluj. On Saturday, FC Botoşani pulled off the surprise of the round, beating Universitatea Cluj 1-0 away from home. Universitatea Craiova also won 1-0 in the home game against Farul Constanţa. On Sunday, in Iaşi, Politehnica defeated Petrolul Ploieşti 1-0, and the derby of the round, pitting the Bucharest-based teams Rapid and FCSB, ended in a goalless draw. The last two matches of the round, Gloria Buzău vs UTA and Dinamo București vs Hermannstadt, are due on Monday. In the standings, FCSB are in first place, with 53 points, followed by Universitatea Craiova, with 52 points. (AMP)

    Romania came out 2nd in Group B of the Rugby Europe Championship, the second most valuable rugby tier on the continent after the 6 Nations Tournament. Romania failed to win the group after being defeated by Portugal in Botoşani on Saturday, 34-6. The semi-finals will take place on March 1. Romania will play away against Georgia, and Portugal will take on Spain, at home. A place among the top 4 teams in the competition ensured the Romanians direct qualification to the 2027 World Cup.

     

    In handball, games took place in the women’s European competitions over the weekend. In the Champions League, Group A, on Saturday, Gloria Bistriţa-Năsăud were defeated at home by the French team Metz, 34-8, and on Sunday, CSM Bucharest won in Norway against Storhamar, 32-21. One round before the end of the group stage, CSM are in 3rd place, and Gloria in 7th. In the last round, the 2 teams will play each other in Bucharest. CSM has secured its qualification in the play-offs for the quarter-finals. The Bistriţa team needs a win in the last round, coupled with a defeat of the Norwegian team Storhamar by the group leader, Metz. In Group B, Rapid did not play, as the team they were supposed to meet, namely the Norwegian group Vipers Kristiansand, withdrew from the competition. Rapid is in 7th place and, in order to qualify for the quarter-final play-offs, they must not lose in the last round, in Podgorica, against Buducnost.

     

    In the EHF European League, both Romanian teams that played on Saturday won their respective matches. In Group A, Dunărea Brăila defeated the Spanish team Elche 32-29 away from home, and in the next round they will take on Ikast (in Denmark). In Group B, SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea defeated the German team Borussia Dortmund at home, 32-27, and will meet the Norwegian team Larvik on Sunday at home. Both Romanian teams lead their respective groups.

     

    The Romanian Men’s Basketball Cup was won by CSO Voluntari, who Sunday won the final against CSM CSU Oradea, 93-83. CSO Voluntari thus won the third Romanian Cup in its history, after the 2021 and 2022 seasons. The Oradea team has played eight finals so far, and has lost all of them.

     

    We end with football. Over the weekend, matches counting for round 27 of the Romanian Super League took place. On Friday, Hermannstadt won against Sfântu Gheorghe 3-2, and Universitatea Craiova beat Oţelul Galaţi 2-1 at home. On Saturday, UTA won in Ploieşti against Petrolul 1-0, and Farul Constanţa beat Dinamo 2-0 in Bucharest. On Sunday, the game in Iaşi between Poli and CFR Cluj ended in a 1-all draw, then FCSB defeated Gloria Buzău 2-0 away from home. The last two matches of the round, pitting Universitatea Cluj against Unirea Slobozia and Rapid Bucharest against FC Botoșani, are scheduled on Monday.     In the 25th edition of the Romanian Football Superleague, scheduled midweek, FC Botosani outperformed Gloria Buzau 2-0 in an away match on Tuesday. The other two games of the day took place in Bucharest, where local side Rapid clinched a 2-1 win against Unirea Slobozia while another local team, Dinamo, managed a 1-0 win against Oţelul Galati.

    On Wednesday, CFR also managed a 1-0 home win against Hermannstadt, while in Craiova, local side Universitatea, obtained the same result against Universitatea Cluj. The leg’s last matches on Thursday will be pitching, Poli Iaşi against UTA, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe against Farul Constanţa and Petrolul Ploieşti against FCSB. Universitatea Cluj and Dinamo are topping the ranking, each with 44 points, followed by CFR Cluj, with 43.

    We continue with the latest from men’s basketball competitions. U-BT Cluj-Napoca has qualified for the EuroCup play-offs. In the group’s last match on Wednesday, Romania’s champions outperformed Greek side Aris Thessaloniki, 89-74. U-BT presently occupies the fifth place in Group B and will next be taking on the fourth side in Group A, Wolves Twinsbet Vilnius, of Lithuania.

    In FIBA Europe Cup, also on Wednesday, CSM CSU Oradea obtained a clear win against Estonian side Kalev/Cramo, 94-66, but failed to qualify for the quarterfinals.

    CSM’s best players proved to be Lithuanians, Paulius Petrilevicius, with 18 points, 6 recoveries, and Donatas Tarolis, with 15 points and 5 decisive passes. In order to advance, the Romanian vice-champions needed a win in Estonia and they also needed the victory of PAOK Thessaloniki in Dijon. However, the French won the match 97-93 and their win blew the Romanians’ qualification chances. PAOK topped the ranking with Dijon in the second position. Oradea came third followed by Kalev/Cramo. The first two sides have qualified for the quarterfinals.

    Now let’s have a look at the latest from water polo competitions. On Wednesday, CSM Oradea conceded a home defeat to the Italian side Savona 17-11, in the first leg of Group B of the Champions’ League quarterfinals. In the group’s other match, Ferencváros secured an 18-10 win against Atletic-Barceloneta cu 18-10. In the second leg Oradea will be playing in Barcelona, on February 26th.

    Romania came out 4th at the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup in Chengdu (China), after losing 2-8 the match for the 3rd place against Hong Kong on Sunday. In the competition’s semis, Romania was defeated by China (8-1). Romania qualified for the semi-finals of the Mixed Team Table Tennis World Cup after defeating Germany 8-5 and after an 8-2 victory in the match against Japan, a world table tennis powerhouse, but which did not line up its top team in Chengdu. It is the best performance for the Romanian team at a Mixed Team World Cup, a competition won this year by the host team, China, which defeated South Korea in the final (8-1). The Romanian team was trained by Andrei Filimon and Ionuț Seni, and consisted of Bernadette Szocs (no 14 in the world), Elizabeta Samara (world no 51), Adina Diaconu (91), Andreea Dragoman (112), Ovidiu Ionescu (world no 46), Eduard Ionescu (75), Andrei Istrate (169) and Darius Movileanu (197).

     

     

    Romania was defeated by Hungary (37-29), on Sunday evening, in Debrecen, in a match in the main Group I of the European Women’s Handball Championship, hosted by Austria, Hungary and Switzerland. With a young team, undergoing reconstruction, Romania defeated the valuable team of Sweden 25-23 in another main Group I match, after previously losing to France, 25 – 30. Romania has 2 points and is in 5th place in the group, with the same number of points as 4th-placed Sweden. Top of the group are Hungary and France, each with 8 points, and Montenegro – 4 points. In the last match in the group, scheduled for Tuesday, December 10, Romania will take on Poland, which is in last place in the group, with zero points.

     

    The Romanians Monica Niculescu and Gabriela Ruse Sunday won the doubles event of the WTA 125 tennis tournament in Angers (France), with EUR 100,000 in total prize money. In the final they defeated Belinda Bencic / Celine Naef (Switzerland) 6-3, 6-4. This is the second WTA 125 doubles title won by Niculescu and Ruse, after the one in Hong Kong, in October.

     

    We end with results of the matches in the 19th round of Romania’s football Super League. On Friday, Sepsi OSK Sfântu Gheorghe beat Rapid Bucharest 2-0. On Saturday, Dinamo București won 1-0 away from home against Gloria Buzău, and Petrolul Ploiești and Universitatea Craiova drew 1-1. The round continued on Sunday with the matches UTA ​​Arad vs Unirea Slobozia 3-4, Politehnica Iaşi vs Farul Constanţa 2-2 and FCSB vs FC Botoşani 2-1.     Romania concluded the European Junior and U23 Championships in weightlifting held in Raszyn, Poland, with 11 medals, of which 4 gold, one silver and 6 bronze. Romania’s top performer was Tiberiu Ionuţ Donose, who brought home 3 gold medals. He won the U23 competition in both snatch and the clear and jerk category, and therefore also finished top of the overall standings.

     

    The Romanian athletes competing in the 2024 World Wrestling Championships which came to an end in Tirana, Albania, and in which 2024 Olympic contestants did not take part, came home with 2 medals. Kateryna Zelenykh won the silver in the 65 kg class, while Denis Florin Mihai won the bronze in the 55 kg Greco-Roman class.

     

    At the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Budva, Montenegro, Romania won 2 bronze medals. Ramona Mihaela Manea reached the semis of the 50 kg category, where she was defeated by Carla Peake (Ireland), while Amalia Ţugui lost the semifinal of the 66 kg class to Uldana Taubai, of Kazakhstan.

     

    The Romanian tennis player Anca Todoni won the WTA 125 tournament in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, after defeating Emiliana Arango (Columbia) 7-6, 6-0 on Sunday. The Romanian player won USD 15,000 and 125 WTA points, which took her 21 places up in the world standings, to no. 117. This is Anca’s second WTA 125 title, after the one in Bari this June.

     

    This weekend also saw matches counting towards the 15th round of the Romanian football SuperLeague. On Friday, CFR Cluj won 1-0 against Gloria Buzău. On Saturday in Sfântu Gheorghe, Sepsi OSK drew, 1-1, against Petrolul Ploieşti. Then in Bucharest Dinamo beat UTA, 1-0. On Sunday, Poli Iaşi defeated Oţelul Galaţi 2-1, Universitatea Cluj and Farul Constanţa drew 1-1, and the same score was reported for the match pitting Universitatea Craiova against FCSB.     Romania’s women’s handball team has qualified for the 2024 European Championships hosted by Austria, Hungary and Switzerland. On Sunday night, in Group 1, Romania, missing its star players Cristina Neagu and Crina Pintea, defeated Croatia away from home 25-23. Romania, which tops the group standings with 8 points, is yet to play against Bosnia-Hertegovina away from home and against Greece at home. The top 2 teams in each group qualify into the final tournament, along with the best 4 teams having ranked 3rd in each group.

     

    The Kenyan-born Romanian athlete Joan Chelimo Melly won Sunday’s semi-marathon race in Paris, and set a new national record on this occasion. Coached by Carol Şanta at the Dinamo Bucharest club, Joan Chelimo Melly has qualified to the Paris Olympics marathon event this summer. She finished the race in one hour, 6 minutes and 57 seconds, followed by the Kenyan athletes Veronica Loleo and Jesphine Jepleting, respectively. Romania’s previous semi-marathon record, 1 hour 7 minutes and 45 seconds, had been set by another Kenyan-born athlete, Stella Rutto, on 21 February 2021.

     

    At the Glasgow World Athletics Indoor Championships, the Romanian athlete Alina Rotaru-Kottmann finished 8th in the long jump finals. Two other Romanians, Diana Ion and Andreea Taloş, came out 9th and 10th in the triple jump final.

     

    Romania’s rugby team played on Saturday against Georgia, away from home, in the semi-finals of the 2024 Rugby Europe Championship. Georgia won the match, 43-5. In the other semi-final, on Sunday, Portugal defeated Spain, 33-30. The finals are scheduled on the 17 March in Paris, with Romania and Spain playing for the 3rd place, and Georgia and Portugal competing for the trophy.

    Arcada Galaţi saw their first win in the group stage of the mens volleyball Champions League. In the competitions Group E on Thursday, the Romanian champions defeated the Czech side Lvi Prague 3-2, at home. On Tuesday, in the other match in the group, the Italian team Civitanova beat the Belgian side Greenyard Maaseik 3-0, away from home. Civitanova tops the group ranking with 3 wins. In a weeks time, Arcada is scheduled to take on Greenyard Maaseik in Belgium. In the first round of the Challenge Cup eighth-finals, the Romanian mens volleyball team Steaua Bucharest lost to Giesen (Germany) 2-3 away from home. The return leg is scheduled next Thursday in Bucharest.



    The sports club Dinamo Bucharest awarded its best athletes of the year 2023. The top performers for the club this year are the rowers Mădălina Bereş, Amalia Bereş and Maria Lehaci Tivodariu. The 3 members of Romanias Olympic team had identical accomplishments in 2023, specifically 2 gold medals each at the European Championships in Bled, and one gold and one silver medal each at the World Championships in Belgrade.



    This weekend, matches are scheduled counting towards the 20th round of the Romanian football Super League. After 2 matches on Friday, FC Voluntari vs. FC U Craiova and Petrolul Ploieşti vs. Rapid Bucharest, Saturday will see UTA Arad take on Farul Constanţa in Sibiu, Universitatea Craiova play at home against Politehnica Iaşi, and FCSB pitted against Hermannstadt on the National Arena in Bucharest.     Cătălin Chirilă won the canoe single 500m and 1,000m races, and Ilie Sprincean and
    Oleg Nuţă won the canoe double 1,000m race. In the competition in Szeged, Romania
    was represented by 9 athletes, 2 women and 7 men, and came out 3rd
    in the medal table.

    left empty-handed from the World Judo Championships in Doha, Qatar. The
    Romanian participants performed modestly, with the best result reported for Lucian
    Borş – Dumitrescu, who reached the eighth-finals of the 66 kg category. The
    last medals for Romania in a world judo championship were won in 2015, in
    Astana, Kazakhstan, by Andreea Chiţu, in the 52 kg category, and by Corina
    Căprioriu, in the 57 kg.




    CSM Lugoj won
    their first Romanian cup in women’s volleyball. The team from Lugoj Sunday won
    the final against CSM Târgovişte, 3-1, in Piteşti. In Saturday’s semis, CSM
    Lugoj beat Volei Alba Blaj, the defending champions and trophy holders, 3-2. The
    athletes from Lugoj thus conclude a very good season, in which they won the Cup
    Winners Cup, the Romanian Cup and played the Challenge Cup final.

    event at the IBSF European Championships held in Altenberg, Germany. She finished
    the race in 2’02”45, and was outperformed by Germany’s Laura Nolte, with
    2’01”13. In the World Cup ranking in Altenberg, the first place went to
    Kaillie Humphries, of the US, with 2’00”61, with Grecu coming in 6th.
