    Headline-hitting these days is the ongoing Football World Cup in Qatar. Surprises have been quick to appear already. Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina, while the refereeing assistance technology has sparked controversies. Representing Romania in Qatar is a crew of three referees. Istvan Kovacs has already been the fourth official referee in the match pitting Qatar against Ecuador. Ovidiu Mihai Artene was a back-up assistant referee for the same match. Linesman Vasile Marinescu is also a member of the referees crew on the job at the World Cup. We recall that the Romanian Ioan Igna was the last official to have been the main referee in a World Cup final tournament, in Mexico, in 1986. A linesman in a final tournament was Nicolae Grigorescu in France, in 1998. However, the Romanian veteran referee was Nicolae Rainea, a three-time delegate in final tournaments. Rainea was a World Cup referee in 1974, in Germany, in 1978, in Argentina, and in 1982, in Spain.



    We need to be honest and say that Romanias national team has been constantly wasting the opportunity to make headway to seniors versions of final tournaments. However, Romanian national teams run in the U-21 version of the final tournament was way above par. We recall that in 2019 Romania reached as far as the semi-finals of the European Championship. In 2023, the European U-21 Championship will be jointly hosted by Romania and Georgia, so our U-21 team will qualify be default.



    Head-coach Emil Sandois trainees have recently played two training matches. They defeated second-league leader, Steaua, 4-2, and were held to a 2-all draw by League One team FC Argeş. In March 2023, Romanias U-21 national team will play two friendly matches, against Portugal and Germany. Romania will be joining Spain, Ukraine and Croatia in the 2023 edition of the European U-21 Championship. (EN)

    Romania’s women’s
    tennis team defeated Hungary, 4-0, in the play-offs of the Billie Jean King cup.
    The event was hosted by the Oradea Arena, the 5,000-seat sports hall of the
    city of Oradea, in northern Romania.




    In the first match,
    played on Friday, Ana Bogdan defeated Dalma Galfi 6-1, 6-4, winning Romania’s
    first point. The second came from Jaqueline Cristian, who won the second
    singles match 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 against Anna Bondar.

    On Saturday, the overall
    score went to 3-0 for Romania, after Ana Bogdan beat Panna Udvardy 6-0, 6-2.
    The doubles match, pitting Jaqueline Cristian and Monica Niculescu from Romania
    against Hungary’s Reka Jani and Panna Udvardy, ended with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-4
    victory for Romania.




    The 2 teams, Romania and
    Hungary, had previously played against each other 9 times in the Fed Cup. Romania
    boasts 8 wins, with Hungary’s only victory coming in 1993 in a match in England.




    The winner of this year’s
    Billie Jean King Cup is Switzerland, which defeated Australia in the final 2-0.




    In the 2023 Billie
    Jean King Cup qualifiers, Romania will take on Slovenia, away from home,
    according to this Sunday’s draw. Slovenia defeated China 3-1 and is scheduled to
    play against Romania on April 14 and 15 next year. Romania and Slovenia only
    played against each other in the Fed Cup in Murcia, Spain in 2000, when

    Romania’s women’s

Bianca succeeded a 72-meter 26-centimeter throw. The gold medal went to US athlete Brooke Andersen, with a throw of 78 meters and 96 centimeters. We recall that in 2021 at the Tokyo Olympics Bianca also came in 4th. Back then Bianca Ghelber’s 74-meter 18-centimetre throw was also a personal record for the Romanian.



    Romania’s national rugby team this past Sunday sustained a 20 to 26 defeat by Uruguay, in Montevideo. Los Teros thus took their revenge as a week ago Romania grabbed a 30-22 win against their opponents, also in Montevideo. Romania succeeded two tries, a penalty kick and another one, scored by Marius Simionescu. Gabriel Rupanu successfully converted both tries. Also scoring for Romania were Gabriel Rupanu and Mihai Muresan, who converted penalty kicks.



    This past weekend saw the start of a new League One football season. As of 2022, the domestic championship is labelled the Superleague. In Medias on Friday, the recently-promoted FC Hermannstadt grabbed a 3-nil win against CS Mioveni. In the second fixture on Friday, in Craiova, Universitatea drew against Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe, 2-all. On Saturday, in Pitesti, FC Arges defeated UTA Arad, 2-nil. Then in Cluj, defending champions CFR succeeded a hard-fought win against Rapid Bucharest, 1-nil. We should note that a couple of seconds from time, CFR’s goalie Cristian Bălgrădean saved Alexandru Albu’s penalty kick. On Sunday, in Ovidiu, in the south-east, Farul Constanța grabbed a 2-1 win against FC U Craiova. On the National Arena in Bucharest, Romania’s vice-champions, FCSB, drew against newly-promoted Universitatea Cluj, 1-all. In the round’s last two games on Monday, FC Botoșani face Chindia Târgoviște, while Petrolul Ploiești are pitted against FC Voluntari.



    Until the Superleague’s next round this coming weekend, four Romanian football teams play in the Conference League’s second preliminary round. FCSB plays an away fixture against Georgian opponents Saburtalo. Then on home turf, CFR Cluj takes on Inter d’Escaldes of Andorra.     towards the qualification for the Davis Cup’s final tournament. The
    announcement was made by the Spanish non-playing captain, Sergi Bruguera. The match is scheduled to be played in Spain’s
    Marbella, on March the 4th and the 5th. The winning team
    advances to the 2022 David Cup’s final stage, to be held according to a 16-team
    format. The teams are distributed in four groups, while the matches will be
    hosted by four different cities. The first two teams in descending order will
    then take part in the final tournament, to be hosted by a city which is still
    to be announced.


    The match pitting Romania
    against Russia as part of the Rugby Europe Championship, venued by the Triumphal
    Arch National Rugby Stadium next Saturday, will be played in front of a full
    stadium. The public’s access to the event will be limited to 30 per cent of the
    stadium’s seating capacity. Measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic will
    also be implemented.

    Die kanadische Tennisspielerin rumänischer Herkunft Bianca Andreescu hat am Sonntag das WTA-Turnier in Toronto gewonnen – das Preisgeld betrug dort insgesamt gut 2,8 Millionen US-Dollar. Andreescu profitierte im Endspiel von der verletzungsbedingten Aufgabe der Veteranin Serena Williams aus den USA. Die 37-Jährige Williams konnte beim Stande von 1:3 aus ihrer Sicht wegen einer Rückenverletzung nicht mehr weiterspielen. Für die 19-jährige Andreescu war es der zweite Titel ihrer Karriere nach dem Turniersieg in Indian Wells. Williams muss hingegen weiter auf ihren ersten Erfolg seit dem Triumph bei den Australian Open 2017 warten.



    Rumäniens Wasserspringer Constantin Popovici hat bei der EM in Kiew im Finale vom 10-Meter-Turm am Sonntag Platz fünf belegt. Popovici und Antonia-Mihaela Pavel hatten im gemischten Synchronspringen vom 10-Meter-Turm am Freitag ebenfalls Platz fünf erreicht. Im Synchronspringen vom Turm der Damen waren Nicoleta Muscalu und Antonia-Mihaela Pavel auch auf Platz fünf gelandet.



    Rumäniens Leichtathleten sind nach der Mannschafts-Europameisterschaft im norwegischen Sandnes in die zweite Liga abgestiegen. Sie belegten Platz acht des Wettbewerbs. Weitere Absteiger in die zweite Liga sind Ungarn, die Slowakei und Litauen. Portugal belegte Platz eins und stieg in die Superliga auf. Am Sonntag, dem letzten Tag der EM, holte Rumänien dank Roxana Bârcă im 5000-Meter-Lauf seinen einzigen Sieg.



    Und schließlich Fußball und der fünfte Spieltag der ersten rumänischen Liga: Im Duell der Aufsteiger am Freitag schlug Academica Clinceni Chindia Târgovişte mit 3:1; Politehnica Iaşi bezwang Dinamo Bukarest zu Hause mit 2:0; Am Samstag gewann Gaz Metan Mediasch die Partie gegen Astra Giurgiu mit 1:0, während der Meister CFR Klausenburg mit 3:0 gegen den FC Hermannstadt erfolgreich war. Am Sonntag gab es gleich zwei Siege für die Gäste: Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe gewann mit 1:0 bei Universitatea Craiova, während der FC Voluntari sich in Piteşti mit 3:1 gegen den FCSB Bukarest durchsetzte.     Ana, mon amour“, der neueste Spielfilm des rumänischen Regisseurs Călin Peter Netzer, überzeugte die Kritiker bei der diesjährigen Auflage der Internationalen Filmfestspiele in Berlin, und das rumänische Kino wurde mit einem neuen Preis ausgezeichnet. Für den Schnitt in Ana, mon amour“ erhielt Dana Bunescu den Silbernen Bären für eine Herausragende Künstlerische Leistung. Vorgeführt wurde der Streifen am Freitagabend im offiziellen Wettbewerb der 67. Berlinale. Der Spielfilm basiert auf dem Roman Luminiţa, mon amour“ von Cezar Paul Bădescu und schildert die angespanntesten und kompliziertesten Momente im Leben eines Ehepaares. Das Drehbuch stammt von Călin Peter Netzer, Cezar Paul Bădescu und Iulia Lumânare. Mehr über diesen Film von Dana Bunescu:



    Das Drehbuch wurde von Anfang an nicht chronologisch konzipiert. Nach und nach kam alles zusammen, wie es im Drehbuch stand. Uns wurde klar, dass hier und da einiges geändert werden musste, und dann begann die normale Arbeit, wie bei jedem anderen Spielfilm. Das hei‎ßt, dass wir mit kleinen Schritten das Puzzle Stück für Stück ergänzten und dann ein bisschen Abstand davon nehmen mussten, um unvoreingenommen das Gesamtbild zu betrachten.“



    Die Trophäe gehöre dem gesamten Drehteam, sagte Dana Bunescu. Diese Trophäe gehört jedem Teammitglied, weil der Film das Resultat ihrer gemeinsamen Arbeit ist. Bis er zu mir, zum Schnitt kam, ging das Filmmaterial durch ihre Hände, durch ihre Köpfe. Das Drehteam ist in jedem Fotogramm präsent, und das müssen wir respektieren“, betonte die Gewinnerin des Silbernen Bären für Schnitt. Anschlie‎ßend lud sie das Publikum ein, den Spielfilm zu sehen und zu genie‎ßen.



    Gut 200 Menschen haben für diesen Streifen hart gearbeitet, regelrecht geschwitzt. Das Publikum sollte den Film genie‎ßen, auch wenn er zum Schluss einen bitteren Geschmack hinterlässt“, sagte noch Dana Bunescu. Es ist nicht zum ersten Mal, dass ein rumänischer Spielfilm bei der Berlinale ausgezeichnet wird. Vor vier Jahren gewann derselbe Călin Peter Netzer den Goldenen Bären mit seinem Spielfilm Die Stellung des Kindes“ (in deutschen Kinos unter dem Titel Mutter & Sohn“ vorgeführt). Der Regisseur sagte, Dana Bunescu habe den Silbernen Bären voll verdient und würdigte ihre herausragende künstlerische Leistung. Haben die zwei eine weitere Zusammenarbeit in Sicht? Dana Bunescu antwortet:



    Ja, sicher, jede neue Zusammenarbeit ist uns willkommen! Wir sind ein gutes Team, wir verstehen uns ausgezeichnet und arbeiten sehr gut zusammen. Selbstverständlich werden wir den nächsten Spielfilm zusammen machen.“



    Eine weitere Rumänin, die auf einen wichtigen Kinopreis hofft, ist Ada Solomon, Koproduzentin bei dem mehrfach ausgezeichneten Spielfilm Toni Erdmann“ der deutschen Regisseurin Maren Ade. Bei der 89. Oscarverleihung am 26. Februar kämpft der Film Toni Erdmann“ um einen Oscar in der Kategorie Bester ausländischer Spielfilm“. Ada Solomon hat auch den preisgekrönten Streifen Die Stellung des Kindes“ produziert.

    2016 was a special year for Romanian fencing, with noteworthy results beginning to add to Romanian fencers’ record sheet as early as in March, when Steaua Bucharest’s women’s epee team, made up of Ana Maria Popescu-Brânză, Simona Gherman, Simona Pop and Greta Veres won the European Cup. In the final, Steaua outperformed Moscow Fencing Club, 45-38.



    In June, Romania walked away with 4 medals at the European Fencing Championships in Torun, Poland. In the individual epee event, the gold went to Simona Gherman, while the silver medal went to Ana-Maria Popescu, whom Gherman defeated in the final. The other two medals were bronze, and were won by Romania’s women’s epee team, made of Ana-Maria Popescu, Simona Pop, Simona Gherman and Loredana Dinu, and by the men’s saber team, made of Alin Badea, Tiberiu Dolniceanu, Ciprian Gălăţanu and Iulian Teodosiu.



    Taking that into account, expectations were high ahead of the Olympic Games in Rio, and it was again the women’s epee team that met these expectations. The team members, Ana-Maria Popescu, Simona Pop, Simona Gherman and Loredana Dinu, won the first Olympic title for Romanian fencing in the nations’ competition. Also, it was the only gold medal the Romanian delegation won at the Olympic Games in Rio.



    In Rio, Romania’s hardest match was the one against the United States in the quarterfinals, when Romania won, 24-23, thanks to Ana-Maria Popescu’s golden touch. Then in the semifinals, Romania had no problem defeating Russia, 45-31, while in the finals, Romania outclassed the defending Olympic champions China, 44-38.



    The gold medal in Rio turned Romania’s epee lineup into an unrivaled team in the race for the Team of the year 2016 title. The performance of Romanian women fencers is all the more impressive, as most of the team members were at the end of their career. Save for Simona Pop, who was born in 1988, the other girls are over 30 and their record includes a great number of medals won in top-class competitions.

    Nach den schwachen Ergebnissen der rumänischen Turnmannschaften in letzter Zeit beschlossen die erfolgreichsten Trainer der rumänischen Sportgeschichte, Mariana Bitang und Octavian Bellu, an die Führung des nationalen Damen-Turn-Teams zurückzukehren. Die beiden hatten sich mehrmals von der Leitung der rumänischen Turnerinnen zurückgezogen, und 2006 wurden sie Staatsberater für Sportfragen. Nach einiger Zeit wurden sie wieder Trainer der Nationalmannschaft der Turn-Damen. 2014 suspendierten sie aber aus Familiengründen die Zusammenarbeit mit der Rumänischen Turnföderation.



    Ihre Rückkehr zur Führung des nationalen Damen-Turn-Teams erfolgte, nachdem der Vorsitzende des Rumänischen Olympischen Komitees, Alin Petrache, in einem offenen Brief an die Rumänische Turnföderation konkrete Ma‎ßnahmen zur Verbesserung der rumänischen Sportleistungen gefordert hatte. Im besagten Schreiben forderte Alin Petrache auch klare Angaben über die Beteiligung der Trainer Mariana Bitang und Octavian Bellu an dem Programm zur Vorbereitung, Qualifizierung und Teilnahme der rumänischen Turnmannschaft der Damen an den Olympischen Spielen 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. Als letzte Lösung hatte das Rumänische Olympische Komitee eventuell eine Zusammenarbeit mit einem ausländischen Trainer empfohlen. Nach Gesprächen mit Vertretern der Rumänischen Turnföderation und des Jugend- und Sportministeriums werden Octavian Bellu und Mariana Bitang die Führung des Damen-Turn-Teams erneut übernehmen. Ihr Ziel ist die Qualifikation der rumänischen Turnerinnen für die Olympischen Spiele 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.



    Zum erstenmal in den letzten 49 Jahren haben die rumänischen Turn-Damen bei der Weltmeisterschaft in Glasgow die Chancen auf eine direkte Olympia-Qualifikation engebü‎ßt. Nach der Qualifizierungsrunde schafften Larisa Iordache und ihre Koleginnen nur den 13. Platz. Somit gehörte also Rumänien nicht zu den ersten 8 Ländern und verfehlte die direkte Qualifikation für die Olympia 2016 in Rio. Nächstes Jahr gibt es aber noch eine Chance: Bei der Qualifikations-Vorrunde in April in Rio de Janeiro, an der die nicht direkt qualifizierten Teams teilnehmen, müssen die rumänischen Turnerinnen unter die ersten 4 Nationalmannschaften kommen.

Mariana Bitang und Octavian Bellu waren Trainer des nationalen Damen-Turn-Teams bei 6 Auflagen der Olympischen Spiele und gewannen insgesamt 22 Olympia-Medaillen (11 Gold-, 6 Silber- und 5 Bronzemedaillen) in Barcelona (1992 ), Atlanta (1996 ), Sydney (2000), Athen (2004), Peking (2008) und London (2012).
