    TV-RADIO FEE Romania’s Constitutional
Court has today ruled that the law
providing for the elimination of 102 fees, proposed by the president of the
Social Democratic Party Liviu Dragnea, is constitutional. The one who contested the law was Romania’s
President Klaus Iohannis, who believes that the law breaks the principle of the
separation of powers, as well as the regulations concerning the national public
budget. These fees include the consular fee, the environmental fee and the
TV-radio license fee. As regards the TV-radio fee, both president Klaus
Iohannis and media organizations have criticized its potential elimination,
saying that this might generate interpretations as to the status of the employees
of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation and of the Public Television,
and this in turn would affect the autonomy of the public radio and television
    services.

has stated he will set forth a proposal for the office of Prime Minister at the
next round of consultations with Romania’s president Klaus Iohannis. As a
result of the elections held on December 11th, 6 political parties
got percentages above the electoral threshold. The Social Democratic Party won
the largest number of seats, but it cannot form a government by itself.

    TIMISOARA Events
commemorating 27 years since the 1989 anti-Communist revolution in Romania have
started in the western city of Timisoara. The Romanian Opera is playing host to
a painting exhibition and the revolutionaries’ associations have participated
in a local administration meeting. This evening, candles will be lit in the
Victory Square in memory of those who died during the Revolution, and the
Martyrs’ Church will hold the holy mass. Started by the opposition of the
citizens of Timisoara to an abusive measure enforced by the local authorities,
the Revolution spread fast throughout Romania, gaining momentum on December 22nd,
when dictator Nicolae Ceausescu lost power and attempted to flee the country.
More than 1000 people died and some 3,400 were wounded between the 16th
and the 25th of December 1989. Romania was the only country in the
eastern block where the regime was changed violently and the communist leaders
    were executed.

    BREXIT European leaders have
talked in Brussels about Great Britain’s leaving the European Union. They have
    decided that the only chief-negotiator
should be Michel Barnier and the negotiating process should be politically
controlled by the European Council. The British PM Theresa May has stated she
wishes for a smooth and well-organized exit. The 27 have stressed again that
they will not accept the free access of British products on the single market
if London decides to confine the free movement of European citizens in the UK.
More on this after the news.

    HANDBALL

a match counting towards the 5th – 6th places at the
European Championship underway in Sweden. The Romanian handball players have
had good performances so far, but did not manage to qualify for the semifinals,
as they were defeated by Denmark. The Romanians have defeated the Olympic
champion Russia, Hungary, Croatia and the Czech Republic and have lost to the defending
European and world champion Norway. Romania’s coach is the Spanish Ambros

  • A new leadership for the Social Democratic Party

A new leadership for the Social Democratic Party

As of October 18th, the Social Democratic Party, Romanias main political party in the current ruling coalition, has a new leadership, whose premature birth was rushed by the summer resignation of its former leader and incumbent Prime Minister, Victor Ponta.

With a landslide win of 97% of over 530 thousand votes by party members, the new party leader, Liviu Dragnea, got validation from Congress on Sunday. 4,000 delegates cast their votes for the position of executive president and for 14 vice-presidents, a new team meant to assist Liviu Dragnea in his new position. But how is the newly elected president seeing his fresh staff?

Liviu Dragnea: “From my point of view, they can only have three objectives, precisely in this order: Romania, peoples well-being and the partys modernization. Their personal careers come only second, way after the other objectives.

Elected executive president, Valeriu Zgonea, who is also president of the Chamber of Deputies, has come up with a new vision for the partys political project: to adjust to the present realities and expectations of society: to be in the frontline of changing the way politics is being done in Romania; and last but not least to show decency, integrity and responsibility, all landmarks of the Social-Democrats public policies.

Valeriu Zgonea: “Wed like to show that we are the only party capable of creating a society in which people stand equal chances; that we are the only party combining economic development with social inclusion; that we are the only ones who think about solidarity, equality and social justice and we are the only ones who always keep their promises.

After the anti-communist revolution, the Social Democratic Party, PSD, ruled Romania for 15 years and held the countrys presidency for 10 years. However, in the vision of the Liberal opposition, once a partner of the Social Democrats in the ruling coalition, the Social Democratic Party has ruined the Romanianss chances to live in an open, performing and fair society. Furthermore, in the opinion of Liberal vice-president, Catalin Predoiu, the cabinet led by Victor Ponta, who is currently being tried for corruption, isnt functional.

Catalin Predoiu: “Victor Ponta has lost the party support and the control of the government. The administration isnt functioning any more. The Romanian Prime Minister is no longer received anywhere in the civilized world. All these because the Social Democratic Party is presently being affected by intestine fights. Thats the real face and modernity of the Social Democratic Party. If the new president, Liviu Dragnea, wants to give a chance to the modernization of the PSD, he should withdraw political support for the Ponta cabinet as early as tomorrow and the next day he and Ponta should give up political careers altogether.

According to the National-Liberals, communism is the foundation of the Social-Democratic Party. The Social Democrats, who convened in the Palace Hall in downtown Bucharest, renowned for having hosted the Communist Partys sessions back in the day, are now trying to contradict what they believe is a fixed idea of their political opponents.
