Romania’s women’s handball team this
past Wednesday sustained their second defeat at the World Championship,
underway in Japan. Romanian lost the match against Montenegro by the narrowest
of margins, 26-27. However, it was Romania’s best match since the debut of the
competition. With Swedish Tomas Ryde at the helm, the Romanians were
unstoppable for the first 45 minutes of the match, succeeding a 21-17 lead. Montenegro
came from behind and scored seven goals in a row, securing a 24-21 lead. Late into
the game the two teams’ performance became balanced, but the Romanians were
unable to turn the tables on their opponents. Cristina Neagu’s run during the
game was scintillating since she scored no less than 11 goals and was
designated the best handballer of the match.

In the other Group C matches so far,
Romania was defeated by Spain and secured wins against Senegal and Kazakhstan.
This coming Friday’s match against Hungary is a must-win for Romania, if they
want to advance to the competition’s main groups stage. However, in the next stage Romania has zero
points on their record sheet. The first two teams in the main groups stage will
make headway into the Championship’s semifinals. However, also at stake is
securing as best a place as possible in the competition’s final rankings, since
in 2020, the first seven teams will take part in the Olympic Games qualifiers. Host
team Japan, European champion team France and Panamerican champion Brazil have already
secured their place among the world’s top seven teams. Being able to secure the
8th, the 9th or even the 10th place at the
ongoing edition of the World Championship may enable the respective teams to
gain access to the pre-Olympic tournaments.

DECISION The National Council for the
Validation of University Titles, Diplomas and Certificates in Romania has today
decided that the head of the country’s National Anti-corruption Directorate,
Laura Codruta Kovesi isn’t guilty of plagiarism in her doctoral thesis. Council
members decided there are no severe irregularities in Kovesi’s thesis and
proposed that she keep her doctoral title. The plagiarism notification has been
filed by an NGO. In mid-November, the Committee for Ethics with the
Timisoara-based West University announced that 564 rows in Kovesi’s doctoral
thesis were similar with other texts. Experts said the notification was partly
grounded and justified. A series of public personalities in Romania, including
politicians and high officials, have lately been involved in plagiarism
scandals.

HANDBALL The women’s
national handball side of Romania on Wednesday night
secured a 22-17 win against Olympic champions Russia in their second D group
match of the European championship underway in Sweden. The Romanians, who lost
their first game 21-23 to defending European and World champions Norway, will
be taking on Croatia on Friday in a decisive game for qualifying for the main
group phase. We recall that Romania is being coached by Spanish selector Ambros
Martin who replaced Tomas Ryde, under whose guidance our handballers won bronze
at the World Championship held in Denmark last year.

OSCE Today and tomorrow
the Romanian Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu will be attending the 13th
OSCE Ministerial Council Meeting in Hamburg. This is the main annual event
bringing together heads of diplomacy and high officials from the 57 participant
countries as well as representatives of OSCE partners. According to Foreign
Ministry sources, the Hamburg Council is taking place against the background of
a complex political environment characterized by major challenges to regional
security and stability, the lack of progress in settling prolonged conflicts,
intensifying terror threats in the OSCE area and the refugee crisis.
Participants will be tackling and making decisions on topical issues on three
key dimensions: political-military, economy & environment as well as human.
The ministerial meeting in Hamburg marks the end of the German presidency of
the OSCE, which will be taken over by Austria.

COUNCIL The EU’s Justice
and Home Affairs Council is to convene In Brussels on Thursday and Friday for
talks over ways of combating EU budget frauds, a strategy for the single
digital market the reform of the common European asylum and counter-terrorism
fight. The latest JHA session took place on November 18th 2016 and
had high on the agenda the European information system and travel permits.
Justice and Interior Ministers have called on experts to start examining the
Commission’s proposal, which they consider a proper instrument aimed at
strengthening the EU’s security policy and border control.

Brüssel: Jeder dritte Rumäne kann sich nicht leisten, einmal im Monat mit den Freunden zum Essen zu gehen, stellen die jüngsten Daten des Europäischen Statistikamtes Eurostat heraus. Dieselbe Zahl gilt auch für Bulgarien und Ungarn. Diese Situation betrifft mit 43% vor allem die Rumänen über 65. Außerdem kann sich mehr als ein Drittel der Befragten unter 25 laut der besagten Umfrage nicht leisten, einmal im Monat in eine Bar zu gehen. EU-weit wird von dieser Situation jeder zehnte Bürger betroffen.

Berlin: Die Strukturreformen werden Griecheland mehr zu einem nachhaltigen Wirtschaftswachstum verhelfen als ein Schuldenerlass, hat am Sonntag der deutsche Finanzminister Wolfgang Schäuble der “Bild am Sonntag“ erklärt. Die Staatsverschuldung Griechenlands beträgt derzeit rund 300 Milliarden Euro, d.h. 180% des BIP und erreicht somit einen negativen Rekordwert in der Europäischen Union. Am Montag kommen in Brüssel die Finanzminister des Euroraums zu Gesprächen zusammen, um die Fortschritte Griechenlands bei der Umsetzung der Reformen zu bewerten, zu denen sich Athen im Gegenzug für die Finanzhilfe verpflichtet hat. Laut Finanzexperten, komme für Deutschland ein Schuldenschnitt für Griechenland vor den Wahlen im September 2017 nicht in Frage. Zum ersten Mal seit 2014 ist das BIP Griechenlands zum zweiten Mal in Folge spürbar gestiegen.

Sport: Die rumänische Handball-Nationalmannschaft der Frauen trifft am Montag bei der EM in Schweden auf den amtierenden Meister Norwegen. Die anderen Gegner Rumäniens in der Vorrunde der EM sind Russland und Kroatien. Die ersten drei Teams der Gruppe steigen direkt in die zweite Runde der EM ein. In dieser Phase werden weitere 2 Serien mit jeweils sieben Mannschaften gebildet. Rumänien wird vom spanischen Trainer Ambros Martin geleitet, der seit vorigem Monat als Nachfolger des Schweden Tomas Ryde gilt. Unter der Leitung des schwedischen Trainers haben die rumänischen Handballerinnen bei der WM 2015 in Dänemark die Bronzemedaille gewonnen. Ambros Martin wurde 2013 und 2014 zum besten Trainer der Welt gewählt. In diesen Jahren hat er mit der ungarischen Mannschaft Győr, die er gleichzeitig leitete, die Champions League gewonnen.

Handball: Damenmannschaft schafft Qualifikation für Olympische Spiele

Mit einigen Glanzleistungen hat sich die rumänische Handball-Nationalmannschaft der Damen die Teilnahme an den Olympischen Spielen in Rio de Janeiro gesichert. Das Qualifikationsturnier fand nach einem umstrittenen Beschluss des internationalen Verbands in Dänemark statt. Angesichts der WM-Bronze hatte sich Rumänien zuvor um das Heimrecht bei dem Turnier bemüht. Somit war gleich die erste Begegnung am Freitag mit dem Gastgeber in Aarhus eine Möglichkeit zur Revanche. Und die nutzten die rumänischen Spielerinnen nur zu gut. Das Team unter der Leitung des Schweden Tomas Ryde gewann unerwartet deutlich mit 32:25 und lag damit bereits in der Pole Position im Rennen um die Teilnahme an den Olympischen Spielen 2016.

Gleich zu Beginn der Partie hatten die Rumäninnen eine makellose Leistung an den Tag gelegt, sie führten früh mit bereits 5 Toren Unterschied. Praktisch wurden dem Gegner Dänemark unmittelbar nach Anpfiff die Grenzen aufgezeigt. Zur Halbzeit führten die Gäste mit 19:13. Nach dem Seitenwechsel ging es im selben Tempo weiter, Rumänien baute die Führung zwischendurch bis auf 10 Tore aus. Praktisch erwischten vier der wichtigsten Spielerinnen im rumänischen Dreß einen ihrer Sahnetage, das waren Torfrau Paula Ungureanu, Kreisläuferin Oana Manea, die Rückraumspielerin und Welthandballerin Cristina Neagu und die Rückraumspielerin Eliza Buceschi. Die letztere wurde auch zur besten Spielerin der Partie gekürt.

Damit war klar, dass die Mannschaft bereits die besten Aussichten auf die Qualifikation für Rio hatte. In der Vierergruppe, der noch Uruguay und Montenegro angehörten, bedeuteten die ersten beiden Plätze nämlich die Teilnahme an den Olympischen Spielen. Und man wusste bereits im Vorfeld: die Begegnung mit den Südamerikanerinnen würde im Normalfall ohne falsche Bescheidenheit eine reine Formalität werden. Das sollte sich am Samstag auch bewahrheiten, als Nationalcoach Ryde mehrere Stammspielerinnen ausruhte und die zweite Riege sich mühelos mit 36:19 gegen Uruguay durchsetzte. Zu den Höhepunkten der Partie gehörten die von der zweiten Torfrau Denisa Dedu im zweiten Durchgang erzielten Tore. Mit Chintoan wurde auch eine der Reservespielerinnen Rumäniens zur besten Spielerin der Partie erklärt.

Der Sieg über Uruguay war allerdings nicht die beste Nachricht an diesem Abend: Montenegro gewann im zweiten Gruppenspiel am Samstag gegen Dänemark mit 26:22 und damit konnte die Party steigen, denn beide osteuropäischen Mannschaften waren somit auch mathematisch für die Sommerspiele qualifiziert.

Trotz der bereits gesicherten Qualifikation ging das Team von Ryde auch die letzte Partie gegen Montenegro am Sonntag hoch konzentriert an. Zur Pause führte Rumänien mit 14:11. Doch in der zweiten Halbzeit gelang den Ex-Jugoslawierinnen ein spektakuläres Comeback und sie kamen in den Schlusssekunden zum verdienten Ausgleich zum 23:23. Dennoch beendete Rumänien dank der besseren Tordifferenz das Turnier auf Platz 1. und darf jetzt die Vorbereitung für die Olympischen Spiele planen.
