    The Australian Open, the year’s first Grand Slam Tournament has reached its semifinals. Unfortunately, the last Romanian in the competition, Gabriela Ruse, failed to qualify for this stage of the competition in the women’s double. In spite of putting up a good show, she and her Ukrainian team mate Marta Kostyuk eventually conceded defeat in the quarterfinals to Su-Wei Hsieh of Taiwan and Jelena Ostapenko, of Latvia, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5. The entire match lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes. Ruse and Kostyuk walked away with a check of 142 thousand Australian dollars and 430 WTA points in the doubles ranking. The pair has already played in two Grand Slam semis, one in Melbourne, in 2023, and another one in Roland Garros, in 2024.

    In the men’s basketball Group B of EuroCup, U-BT Cluj-Napoca secured a home win against Turk Telekom Ankara, 94-81. That was the last home match for the Romanian champions. The best U-BT player was American Dennis Seeley with 31 points. After 16 legs, U-BT ranks 5th in the standings with 9 wins and 7 defeats. Next Tuesday, U-BT will be up against Lietkabelis Panevezys, in Lithuania and on February 5th they will be taking on Aris Thessaloniki in Greece. The first two sides will directly qualify for the quarterfinals and the following four will be competing in the play-offs.

    The ice hockey side Fenestela 68 Sfântu Gheorghe on Wednesday obtained a surprising result in Romania’s National Ice Hockey Championship; a 3-2 away win against the championship’s leader, ACSH Gheorgheni. The Harghita side remains in the first place with 55 points out of 26 games, followed by Corona Braşov, with 53 points out of 23 matches.

    In a top game of the 15th leg of the National League in women’s handball, Corona Braşov, secured a 33-29 win against SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea, one of Romania’s representative in the EHF European League. The second Romanian side in the continental competition, Dunărea Brăila, clinched a 30-22 victory against HC Zalau. Two sides playing for Romania in the Champions League have also obtained victories. CSM Bucharest has outperformed CSM Slatina, 41-29, while Rapid Bucharest has secured a 32-24 win against CSM Târgu Jiu. CSM Bucharest tops the ranking with 39 points, followed by Corona, with 31.

    U-BT Cluj-Napoca obtained their first win this season in the men’s basketball competition EuroCup. U-BT clinched a 103-67 win against German side Veolia Towers Hamburg, in the competition’s Group B. The Romanian champions came back from three defeats in the row. American Zavier Simpson was the best player of the Romanian side with 28 points and 8 decisive passes. U-BT Cluj-Napoca will be next taking on Hapoel Bank Yahav of Jerusalem in an away game to be held in Bulgaria.

     

    CSM Oradea, a Romanian basketball side, playing in FIBA Europe Cup, on Wednesday secured an away win against Parnu Sadam of Estonia, 84-72. The Romanian international of US descent, Kris Richard, had a considerable hand in CSM’s win with 29 points scored and 5 recovers. The other Romanian side in the group, FC Argeş, lost 62-65 to Polish side Spojnia Stargard. Oradea tops the ranking with two wins out of two games and will be up against FC Argeş on 23 October.

     

    In the Challenge Cup, the Romanian women’s volleyball side, CSM Lugoj, qualified for the round of 32 after a 3-0 home win against Selmy Brno of Czechia on Wednesday.

    The Romanians also won the first match 3-0. CSM will be playing the Hungarian side Székesfehérvár. CSM Târgovişte has also qualified for the same stage of the competition after a 3-1 away win against Ostrava of the Czech Republic. CSM Târgovişte will be up against another Czech side, Olymp Praga.

     

    Wednesday saw the derby of the National Women’s Handball League pitching CSM and Rapid Bucharest two of Romania’s representatives in the Champions League.  CSM won the game 29 – 24. Rapid had a good start and got the upper hand, 8-5. However, the champions managed a good comeback and secured a 15-12 win.  Slovenian player, Elizabeth Omoregie, was CSM’s best scorer with 9 goals while Serbian player Andjela Janjusevic scored 7 goals for Rapid.

    The Romanian basketball side SCM Timișoara was outperformed by the Polish side Dąbrowa Górnicza 90-88, in the finals of the European competition Alpe Adria Cup in Kapfenberg, Austria on Wednesday. The Polish side won thanks to a basket made in the game’s last second and reaped the trophy for the second season in a row. Dąbrowa Górnicza also eliminated SCM Timișoara in the quarter finals last year.

     

    We continue with men’s basket ball competitions, noting that the Romanian side U-BT Cluj-Napoca was stopped in its tracks in the quarter finals of the EuroCup by the English side London Lions, which won the match 91-79. U-BT had made it to this stage of the competition for the first time after coming second in Group B.

     

    In the regional ice hockey competition Erste League, the trophy holder ACSH Gheorgheni, is also the first side to have qualified for the semis after a 4-0 on aggregate in the quarters against Hungarian side Ujpest. ACSH won the last game 6-2 in Budapest on Wednesday. The ‘quarters’ are being held in the ‘best in four games’ system. In different quarter finals match, another Romanian side, Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc, now boasts a 2-1 aggregate advantage against Budapest Jegkorong Akademia, after a 4-3 home win on Wednesday. The fourth match will be held on Saturday. Jegesmedvek and Corona Brașov are now equal, 2-all, after the Hungarians won the two matches in Brașov, and Corona claimed the two games in Miskolc, the last of them ending 4-1 on Wednesday.

     

    In a derby of the 19th leg of the National League in women’s handball, Gloria Bistrița secured a 25 – 22 home win against Rapid Bucharest. Bistrita has made it to the second place in the League’s ranking, which is topped by CSM Bucharest. The second position in the final ranking can earn them a place in the Champions League, as it happened to Rapid last year.

    The Romanian womens basketball side Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe on Wednesday got their second and most clear win in the Euroleague. The Romanian champions secured an 88-58 home win against Polish side Lublin, in the competitions Group A. US player Morgan Green was the best player of the Romanian side with 19 points, 5 recoveries and 9 decisive contributions. The win has pushed Sepsi to the seventh position in the groups ranking. Before the game, Sepsi was at the bottom of group A.


    The Romanians will next take on Valencia Basket Club on their own ground on January 10th.


    In the mens group B of the Eurocup competition, Romanias side U-BT Cluj-Napoca lost to French side Bourg-en-Bresse, 98-89. With eight wins, U-BT ranks third in the 10-side group after Dreamland Gran Canaria and Bourg-en Bresse, each with 10 victories. U-BT will be taking on Buducnost Podgorica in an away game on December 27th.


    Hungarian capital, Budapest, is hosting an international water polo tournament. Romanias male side lost to Spain 15-7. This has been their third failure in a row after those against Serbia, 5-15 and 8-15 to Hungary.


    Romanias football Superleague has this week seen the matches of its 21st leg, the last this year. On Tuesday in Craiova, southern Romania, local side, FC U 1948, secured a 2-0 victory against Petrolul Ploiesti, while in Iaşi, north-eastern Romania, FCSB clinched a 3-1 win against local side Poli. Two matches ended in a draw on Wednesday, UTA Arad versus Universitatea Craiova 2 all and Farul Constanţa versus Rapid Bucharest, 0 all. Hermannstadt plays Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe on Thursday and CFR Cluj takes on Universitatea Cluj. The legs last two matches will be on Friday, when Oţelul Galaţi plays FC Botoşani and Dinamo Bucharest takes on FC Voluntari. FCSB ranks first in the standings with 44 points followed by Universitatea Craiova with 34. The Superleagues championship is to resume on January 19th.

    competition where Romania will be represented by its 17th seeded Bernadette
    Szőcs, and 27th – seeded Elizabeta Samara, as well as by Andreea
    Dragoman and Adina Diaconu. They will participate in the women’s competition
    while Ovidiu Ionescu, Eduard Ionescu and Marius Movileanu will be representing
    Romania in the men’s contest. In the women’s doubles, the pair made up by
    Bernadette Szőcs and Sofia Polcanova of Austria is fourth-seeded, whereas Dragoman
    and Samara are seeded 14th. The 9th-seeded mixed pair Bernadette
    Szőcs – Ovidiu Ionescu also stands chances to a good performance in Durban.

    which won the first two home games, 79-73 and 93-83. The finals is played on
    the-best-out-of-seven system and the fourth game is due on Monday.

    Rhythmic Gymnastics is presently being hosted by Baku, in Azerbaijan. In the
    women’s competition Romania is being represented by Annaliese Dragan and
    Andreea Verdes in the individual contest as well as by Alenia Biringer, Catrina
    Buniov, Anisia Dragan, Dalia Marin, Claudia Mitan and Antonia Stanescu. The
    individual finals and qualifiers are due on Friday while the last finals are
    due on Sunday.




    This weekend will see the 9th
    leg of the Romanian football Superleague with the most important game in
    Ovidiu, southeastern Romania, pitching local side Farul against FCSB. Farul tops
    the table a point head of FCSB. On Sunday, CFR Cluj plays Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe
    on the latter’s home turf, while on Monday Rapid on their own turf in Bucharest
    plays Universitatea Craiova.




    Friday will see four games, when Hermannstadt
    takes on Universitatea Cluj, Chindia Târgovişte plays FC Voluntari, FC Argeş Petrolul
    Ploieşti and UTA takes on FC U Craiova. FC Botoşani plays Mioveni on Saturday.
