    In the 25th edition of the Romanian Football Superleague, scheduled midweek, FC Botosani outperformed Gloria Buzau 2-0 in an away match on Tuesday. The other two games of the day took place in Bucharest, where local side Rapid clinched a 2-1 win against Unirea Slobozia while another local team, Dinamo, managed a 1-0 win against Oţelul Galati.

    On Wednesday, CFR also managed a 1-0 home win against Hermannstadt, while in Craiova, local side Universitatea, obtained the same result against Universitatea Cluj. The leg’s last matches on Thursday will be pitching, Poli Iaşi against UTA, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe against Farul Constanţa and Petrolul Ploieşti against FCSB. Universitatea Cluj and Dinamo are topping the ranking, each with 44 points, followed by CFR Cluj, with 43.

    We continue with the latest from men’s basketball competitions. U-BT Cluj-Napoca has qualified for the EuroCup play-offs. In the group’s last match on Wednesday, Romania’s champions outperformed Greek side Aris Thessaloniki, 89-74. U-BT presently occupies the fifth place in Group B and will next be taking on the fourth side in Group A, Wolves Twinsbet Vilnius, of Lithuania.

    In FIBA Europe Cup, also on Wednesday, CSM CSU Oradea obtained a clear win against Estonian side Kalev/Cramo, 94-66, but failed to qualify for the quarterfinals.

    CSM’s best players proved to be Lithuanians, Paulius Petrilevicius, with 18 points, 6 recoveries, and Donatas Tarolis, with 15 points and 5 decisive passes. In order to advance, the Romanian vice-champions needed a win in Estonia and they also needed the victory of PAOK Thessaloniki in Dijon. However, the French won the match 97-93 and their win blew the Romanians’ qualification chances. PAOK topped the ranking with Dijon in the second position. Oradea came third followed by Kalev/Cramo. The first two sides have qualified for the quarterfinals.

    Now let’s have a look at the latest from water polo competitions. On Wednesday, CSM Oradea conceded a home defeat to the Italian side Savona 17-11, in the first leg of Group B of the Champions’ League quarterfinals. In the group’s other match, Ferencváros secured an 18-10 win against Atletic-Barceloneta cu 18-10. In the second leg Oradea will be playing in Barcelona, on February 26th.

    The city of Antwerp in Belgium will this weekend see the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. The competition could bring the qualification of the Romanian teams for the Olympic Games in Paris, next year. The female athletes who represent Romania in Antwerp are Ana Maria Bărbosu, Sabrina Voinea, Lilia Cosman, Amalia Ghigoarţă, Andreea Preda and Ella Oprea Creţu while its male team consists of Robert Burtănete, Andrei Muntean, Roland Modoianu, Nicholas Ţarcă and Emilian Neagu. The injuries that he got in September have prevented the best Romanian gymnast, Gabriel Burtănete from participating in the aforementioned competition. Romanias gymnastics teams have not participated in the Olympic Games since 2012 in London.



    We move on to womens handball now. This weekend will see the fourth leg of the Champions League, and on Saturday, Rapid Bucharest goes to Budapest to play local side Ferencvaros. With two points out of three games, Rapid ranks sixth in Group B. CSM Bucharest is also playing abroad, in Partille, Sweden, where our handballers will be up against local side Sävehof. The Romanian champions are presently ranking fifth in Group A with two points. In the second round of the qualifiers for the second continental competition, the European League, Dunarea Braila will be playing a home match against Valur Reykjavik of Iceland. The Romanians won the first match 30-29.



    This weekend will also see the football matches counting towards the 11th leg of the Romanian Superleague. On Friday, Oţelul Galaţi plays Dinamo Bucharest, while on Saturday, UTA Arad takes on FC Voluntari, and Farul Constanţa on Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe. Three games are due on Sunday, when Universitatea Craiova, on their own turf, will be playing FC Botoşani, then in Sibiu, central Romania, local side Hermannstadt will be up against Rapid Bucharest. The city of Cluj, in western Romania, will be pitching local side CFR against FC U Craiova 1948.



    The leg will end on Monday, when Poli Iaşi plays Petrolul Ploieşti and FCSB Universitatea Cluj. FCSB tops the ranking with 25 points out of 10 matches, followed by CFR with 19 points out of 9 games.

    A new edition of the Romanian football championships, known as the Super-league, begins on Friday with the best 16 elevens vying for the title. The competition will have two parts, the first consists of the football season per se when all the sides will play each other.


    The first half of the season, which kicks off this weekend, has 15 legs and is due to end in November, the second half, with the same number of legs will end in March next year. The first six sides at the end of the first season will met in the play-offs for the title of Champions and for a place in the European Cups. They will play against each other during the first five legs, then they will meet again for the return matches. The champion side will go into the preliminaries of the Champions League and the runner up into the Conference League preliminaries. The third side in the ranking will be playing the best side in the play-out for a place in the Conference League.


    What is known in Romania as the play-out competition will bring together the sides on the 7th to the 16th positions at the end of the football season. They will be playing each other in 9 legs. The first two sides will play a tie match and the winner will be taking on the third side in the play-offs for a place in the Conference Leagues preliminaries. The sides on the 9th and 10th positions in the play-out will demote to the second Romanian football league, while those on the 7th and 8th positions will play a tie match against those on 3rd and 4th positions in an attempt to remain in the Super-league.


    The Super-leagues latest champion is Farul Constanţa, which will first take on Hermannstadt in Sibiu, central Romania. The newly-promoted Oţelul Galaţi will be playing UTA from Arad, while Poli Iaşi will be up against CFR Cluj on the latters home turf. Dinamo Bucharest, on their own turf will be playing Universitatea Craiova.

    Romanian athlete Valentin Cretu on Friday compelled recognition in the sleigh event part of the World Cup held in the German city of Winterberg. The Romanian ended the race in 52 seconds and 412 thousandths being followed by German Florian Muller and by American Jonathan Eric Gustafson.


    Romanias rugby side on Saturday clinched a 56-5 win against Belgium in the second leg of the continental competition Rugby Europe Championship. In the other game of the B Group, Portugal secured a 65-3 win against Poland. Romania and Portugal have already qualified for the semifinals of the aforementioned competition. They will be vying next week in Portugal for the first position in the group, which brings tickets to the semifinals with the second side in group A on their own turf.


    Following the last leg of the Champions Leagues groups in womens handball held last weekend we learnt the opponents of the Romanian sides in the competitions next stage. In the playoffs for a place in the quarter finals, Rapid Bucharest, which ended on the fourth position in group B will be up against Krim Liubljana of Slovenia, which ended on the fifth position in group A.


    Romanias champions on Sunday defeated on their own turf, Croatian side Lokomotiva Zagreb 27 – 22 while Krim obtained a 28-26 win against the other Romanian side in the League, CSM Bucharest. Cristina Neagu and her team mates have thus blown their chances of winning the Group A, ending up second in the group instead. They have already been qualified for the Leagues quarters where they will be playing the winners of the play-offs pitching French side Brest Bretagne against Danish side Esbjerg.


    Last weekend saw the football matches counting towards the 25th leg of the Romanian Superleague. The return games are due on Saturday. CSM Galati ranks first in the standings with 19 points followed by Háromszéki with 15, Gheorgheni with 14 points and SC Miercurea Ciuc with 9 points.


    Romanias national rugby side will be playing a test match against Uruguay in Bucharest on Sunday. A week ago, the Romanian fifteen obtained a 30-23 win against Chile on the same stadium in Bucharest. Romania relies on a line-up of 33 rugby players coached by English Andy Robinson. They come from four sides in the domestic championships such as Steaua and Dinamo Bucharest, SCM Timisoara, CSM Baia Mare and from five French sides and an Italian one.


    Romania played its last two matches against Uruguay in Montevideo in July 2022. Our players won the first match 30-22, but lost the second 26-20. On Saturday, on the same Triumphal Arch stadium in Bucharest, the national side of Tonga will be up against Chile, in a game part of their European tour.


    On Friday in the 18th leg of the Romanian football Championships, OSK Sfântu Gheorghe takes on Petrolul Ploiești. On Saturday, Chindia Târgoviște plays Farul Constanța while Rapid Bucharest is up against CS Universitatea Craiova.     Romanian tennis player Irina Begu on Sunday won the
    WTA 125 tournament in Bucharest, a competition with 115 thousand dollars in
    prize money. The Romanian obtained a two-set win 6-3, 6-3 against the Hungarian
    challenger Reka-Luca Jani. The second-seeded Romanian, who is 41st
    in the WTA ranking, obtained the victory in two hours. The Hungarian challenger
    put up a balanced show in both sets but the Romanian eventually won her second
    WTA tournament after the one in Palermo in July.




    Romania played Slovakia in an away Davis Cup
    competition this weekend. The hosts eventually obtained a 3-1 win in the World
    Group. The only Romanian win belonged to 19 year old player Nicholas David
    Ionel, 283rd in the ATP ranking. On Friday he secured a 6-7, 7-5, 6-4
    win against Norbert Gombos. The other games were won by Slovakia, which has
    thus qualified for the competition’s next stage.






    In the Champions League, Romanian women’s handball side
    CSM Bucharest secured a 33-26 away win against Brest-Bretagne of France. The
    most effective Romanian player was Elizabeth Omoregie with 6 goals scored.
    After two legs, German side Bietigheim ranks first in the group, followed by Vipers
    Kristiansand of Norway and CSM Bucharest each with four points. Our handballers
    will next be playing the German side in Bucharest on Sunday.




    In group B, in Bucharest, Romania’s champions Rapid

    Buceschi and Lorena Ostase proved to be the best Romanian scorers, each with five

    The odds-on favourite Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea has been surprisingly elimnated in the first round of the Tiriac Foundation Trophy in Bucharest. The Romanian conceded defeat to Simona Waltert of Switzerland, who obtained a 6-3, 6-3 win in one hour and 29 minutes.


    Ţiriac Foundation Trophy is a WTA 125 tournament staged by the Romanian Tennis Federation with support from the Ţiriac Foundation. The organizers are offering total prizes of 115,000 dolars and 160 WTA points to the winner.


    The 11th leg of the First Romanian Football League had its last two games on Monday.


    On their own turf, CS Mioveni lost nil-one to Universitatea Cluj, while FCSB drew their game one-all against FC Voluntari. Farul takes the lead in the standings with 21 points followed by Rapid Bucharest also with 21 and FC Hermannstadt with 19 points.


    The second-league game pitching Dinamo Bucharest against Steaua, which was considered Romanias derby ended 2-1 to Steaua.


    On Saturday night, during the Ivan Patzaichin Festival, Romanian canoe champion Cătălin Chirilă was designated honorary citizen of the city of Tulcea. In August, Chirila became world champion in Darthmouth, Canada, and European champion in Munich, in the 1000 meter single canoe race.


    Chirilă has dedicated the title he won to the multiple Olympic champion Ivan Patzaichin motivating: “I remember the emotions I felt while rowing with him on the same canal. I felt like I was going back in time as the canal was unchanged so I felt that this medal should be dedicated to him. “

    advanced to the play-off stage as part of the Conference league European
    competition. In the third preliminary round, the most spectacular feat was Universitatea
    Craiova’s 3-nil home win against Ukraine’s Zarya Lugansk. Universitatea came
    from behind in the wake of a first-leg nil-1 defeat away from home. Scoring for
    Universitatea were the Brazilian Raul Silva, in minute 5, Ştefan Baiaram, in
    minute 53, and Nicuşor Bancu, in minute 57. It was Universitatea’s first
    official game with head-coach Mirel radio at the helm. In the play-offs, Universitatea
    are pitted against Israeli opponents Hapoel Beer-Sheva.




    In Cluj, holders CFR defeated Shakhtar Soligorsk of Belarus,
    1-nil. CFR’s Spanish footballer Jefte Betancor sealed the fate of the game on 37
    minutes. We recall that in the first leg, hosted by a Turkish stadium last
    week, CFR were held to a blank draw. In the confrontation for a place in the Conference
    League’s group stage, CFR will next play Slovenian team NK Maribor.


    In Bucharest, FCSB defeated Slovakian opponents Dunajska
    Streda, 1-nil, in front of 40,000 fans in the stands, a record high number this
    year for a fixture involving a Romanian squad. FCSB’s Andrei Cordea scored, in
    minute 29. We recall FCSB had for the first leg, away from home, also 1-nil. In
    the play-offs, FCSB take on Norway’s Viking Stavanger.






    Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe was the only Romanian team that did
    not manage to move past the Conference League’s third preliminary round, being
    eliminated by Djurgaarden of Sweden. The latter team secured a 3-1 win in the
    double legged-tie against the Romanians. Djugaarden’s Romanian international
    footballer, Cosmin Matei, drew first blood on 8 minutes.






    Matches
    counting towards the Romanian football Superleague’s fifth round are scheduled
    at the weekend. On Friday, FC Argeş face FC U Craiova. On Saturday, Universitatea
    Cluj play UTA, Arad, away from home, then in Ploiesti, in the south, Petrolul
    go against Rapid Bucharest. On Sunday, Universitatea Craiova are pitted
    against CS Mioveni, CFR Cluj face FC Botoşani while FCSB take on Chindia
    Târgovişte. Ther fifth round’s last two fixtures are scheduled this coming Monday,
    when FC Voluntari play Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe, while Farul Constanţa face FC
    Hermannstadt. CFR Cluj and Rapid are at the top of the as-it-stands table, with
    9 points each.

    In Bucharest, FCSB defeated Slovakian opponents Dunajska
    Streda, 1-nil, in front of 40,000 fans in the stands, a record high number this
    year for a fixture involving a Romanian squad. FCSB’s Andrei Cordea scored, in
    minute 29. We recall FCSB had for the first leg, away from home, also 1-nil. In
    the play-offs, FCSB take on Norway’s Viking Stavanger.






    Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe was the only Romanian team that did
    not manage to move past the Conference League’s third preliminary round, being
    eliminated by Djurgaarden of Sweden. The latter team secured a 3-1 win in the
    double legged-tie against the Romanians. Djugaarden’s Romanian international
    footballer, Cosmin Matei, drew first blood on 8 minutes.






    Matches
    counting towards the Romanian football Superleague’s fifth round are scheduled
    at the weekend. On Friday, FC Argeş face FC U Craiova. On Saturday, Universitatea
    Cluj play UTA, Arad, away from home, then in Ploiesti, in the south, Petrolul
    go against Rapid Bucharest. On Sunday, Universitatea Craiova are pitted
    against CS Mioveni, CFR Cluj face FC Botoşani while FCSB take on Chindia
    Târgovişte. Ther fifth round’s last two fixtures are scheduled this coming Monday,
    when FC Voluntari play Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe, while Farul Constanţa face FC
    Hermannstadt. CFR Cluj and Rapid are at the top of the as-it-stands table, with
    9 points each.

    Romania’s fifteen came third
    in the 2022 edition of Rugby Europe Championship, the second most important
    competition on the continent. In the competition’s last leg, ‘the Oaks’ have
    secured a 38-12 win against the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Georgia came first in
    the ranking with 20 points followed by Spain with 17. Romania mustered 14 points
    two more than Portugal on the fourth position.




    Georgia and Spain also
    occupied the first two positions in the aggregate ranking of the 2021, 2022
    editions and have automatically qualified for the World Cup due in France next
    year. Romania has thus advanced to the Final Qualification Tournament due in
    November when they will compete against three other sides representing Africa, North
    and South America and Asia-Pacific. The winner will get plane tickets for the
    World Cup 2023 hosted by France.




    Romania’s national handball side
    has blown its chances to qualify for the World Championship next year after
    being eliminated by North Macedonia in the second round of the preliminaries.
    North Macedonia had also won the first game in Skopje 30-22 and the match in
    Bucharest went to Romania 24-22, which failed to win on aggregate.




    In the domestic women’s
    championship Rapid Bucharest tops the ranking, after securing a 33-31 win
    against CSM Slatina in the competition’s 19th leg. Rapid has 38
    points, 4 more than the champions CSM Bucharest presently ranking on the second
    position with a game in hand. Magura Cisnadie ranks third after a 34-22 home win
    against CSM Deva.
