    The Transylvanian Open women’s
    tennis tournament, venued by the BT Arena in Cluj-Napoca, has drawn to a close.
    Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit is the winner of the tournament as in the final,
    Kontaveit defeated top-seeded Simona Halep, 6-2, 6-3. The tournament had 235, 238
    USD in prize money.


    25-year-old Kontaveit is
    WTA 14th-placed and it took her only one hour and ten minutes of
    play to beat Halep. The win in Cluj-Napoca booked Kontaveit the ticket for the Champions Tournament. Anett Kontaveit received a cheque worth 29,000 USD .200 de dolari and
    280 WTA points, while Halep received a cheque worth 16, 398 USD and 180 WTA
    points. For 30-year-old Simona Halep, it was the 40-th WTA tournament final of
    her career. So far, Halep has won 22 and lost 18 final confrontations.


    Notwithstanding, Romania
    had a winner in the Transylvania Open. Pairing up with Georgia’s Ekaterina
    Gorgodze in the women’s doubles final, Irina Bara grabbed a 4-6, 6-1, 11-9 win
    against Serbian-Dutch pair made of Aleksandra Krunic and Lesley Pattinama
    Kerkhove. It is the first title for Bara and Gorgodze, who received a cheque
    worth 10, 300 USD and 280 WTA points according to the doubles’ rankings. Krunic and Kerkhove received a cheque worth 6, 000
    USD and 180 WTA points.


    According to the WTA women’s
    singles rankings, four Romanian competitors can be found among the world’s top
    100 tennis players. Simona Halep is 22nd-placed while Sorana Cîrstea
    is 38th-ranked. Irina Begu and Gabriela Ruse are 60th and
    86th-placed, respectively. Jaqueline Cristian is 104th-ranked
    and Ana Bogdan is 108th-placed, so they are a whisker away from earning
    a place among the world’s top 100 players.


    Australian Ashleigh
    Barty is at the top pf the WTA rankings, with 7, 701 points.


    Four Romanian tennis
    players have already been included in the world’s top 100 players according to
    the WTA doubles rankings. They are Raluca Olaru, who is 36th-placed,
    Monica Niculescu, who is 39th-placed, Irina-Camelia Begu, who is 61st and Andreea Mitu, who is 100th-placed according to the WTA rankings.

    Romanian basketball team U-BT Cluj-Napoca has
    succeeded an auspicious debut in the Champions League’s group stage. This past
    Tuesday, U-BT Cluj-Napoca grabbed a 66-60 win against Turkish opponents Darüşşafaka
    Basketbol, in a Group G fixture. The Romanians had an unassuming start for the
    game, so much so that on minute 15 the scoreboard indicated a 21-14 advantage
    for the Turkish team. However, head-coach Mihai Silvasan’s trainees came from
    behind and eventually secured a laid-back win. U-BT Cluj Napoca’s American basketball
    players, Elijah Stewart and Patrick Richard, were U-BT Cluj Napoca’s top scorers.
    Stewart succeeded 18 points and 6 recoveries, while
    Richard succeeded 17 points and 2 recoveries. Another American was the Turkish
    team’s best basketball player, Nathan Boothe, with 14 points and 5 recoveries
    on his record sheet. Group G also includes Italian team Happy Casa Brindisi and Israeli squad Hapoel U-net Holon. On October 18, U-BT Cluj-Napoca’s will
    next play Italy’s Happy Casa Brindisi, away from home.

    In the domestic championship, in a second-round game,
    on Tuesday CSO Voluntari outclassed Dinamo Bucharest, 84-81, after extra time. Ten
    seconds from time, CSO Voluntari’s Swedish player Carl Viktor Gadeffors managed
    a successful free throw, failed in his second throw, but Andrei Calenic
    recovered the ball and succeeded to level the score. It was only in extra time
    that CSO Voluntari managed to have the upper hand, when, two seconds from time,
    Dinamo’s Andrei Mandache wasted the opportunity to score from a three-point
    throw. The game against Dinamo was CSO Voluntary’s debut fixture in the
    domestic championship, since their first-round game against SCM Timişoara was
    postponed. In another fixture, CSM CSU Oradea trounced Municipal Târgu Jiu, 89 to

    counting towards the first tour in World Group I. On Saturday, in the first
    men’s singles confrontation, Portugal’s Joao Sousa defeated Filip Cristian Jianu,
    6-3, 7-5. In the second confrontation on Saturday, Marius Copil grabbed a 6-4,
    6-3 win against Gastao Elias. On Sunday, in the men’s doubles confrontation,
    Marius Copil and Horia Tecău defeated Nuno Borges and Joao Sousa, 6-4, 6-3. In
    the second men’s singles match, Marius Copil defeated Sousa, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
    Copil’s feat sealed Romania’s win against Portugal. Marius had a substantial contribution
    to all three points on Romania’s record sheet. Reason enough for Radio Romania
    International to designate Copil the Athlete of the week.

    Arad on October17, 1990, into a family of athletes. His father was a rugby
    player, while his mother played handball. Marius took up tennis at the age of
    7. He turned pro in 2008. Marius Copil earned his place among the world’s top
    100 players in May 2017. Copil reached as far as an ATP tournament final twice,
    in 2018. In the first final match, Marius
    Copil was defeated by Bosnian challenger Mirza Basic, in Sofia. The second tournament in Basel
    saw Copil sustaining a defeat by Roger Federer. The Swiss tournament has meant Marius
    Copil’s career best so far. The Romanian’s trail began in the qualifiers and
    included six wins against better-placed opponents. Among them, Croatia’s Marin Cilic and the German Alexander Zverev. Early
    into 2019, when Copil advanced to the Australian Open’s second round, he was 56th
    placed according to the men’s singles world rankings. It was Copil’s career
    best so far, according to the professional tennis rankings at world level. As

Face masks thus become compulsory in all localities irrespective of the number of contaminations. Shops will close at 9 p.m. and enclosed marketplaces will be shut down. Travel during the night will be banned between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. except for those people who go to work, have medical emergencies, or have to take care of children and elderly persons and provide a self declaration in this sense. All public institutions and private and state-owned companies will have to introduce the teleworking and work-from-home systems where possible. All schools will go online, but nurseries and after-school facilities remain open. Parties or meetings for various holidays and anniversaries will be banned. Restrictions occur in the context in which Romania has reported, as of February, more than 300 thousand cases of contamination with the new coronavirus, and the number of cases has increased alarmingly in the past weeks. The total death toll is nearing 7,900 and more than 1 thousand Covid-19 patients are in ICUs. On Sunday evening, hundreds of people protested in front of the government building in Bucharest against the new restrictions.



    Coronavirus world — The number of new coronavirus cases globally exceeds 50 million, with a death toll of more than 1.2 million. The visit is part of the effort to intensify bilateral relations, especially in the context of the anniversary of 140 years of diplomatic relations in 2020. According to a Foreign Ministry communiqué, the two officials will review the current bilateral relations and will discuss their consolidation in domains of mutual interest. Minister Aurescu will talk about the management of the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, about the Multiannual 2021-2027 Financial Framework and the recovery plan, the future EU-UK partnership agreement, Romania’s accession to the Schengen Space as well as climate change. Also the Romanian FM will underline the importance of deepening the bilateral dialogue on security issues within NATO and the EU, as well as the effort to promote a solid transatlantic relation.



    US election – The Romanian President, Klaus Iohannis, on Saturday congratulated Joe Biden on his victory in the US presidential election: “I look forward to further consolidating our solid and dynamic Strategic Partnership in all its dimensions” President Iohannis wrote in a social network post. Many world leaders, EU and NATO officials have congratulated the Democrat candidate Joe Biden for his victory against the incumbent Republican President Donald Trump in the November 3 election, international news agencies report. The NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg congratulated Joe Biden and expressed hope to consolidate the relations between the US and Europe. The head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, also congratulated Joe Biden insisting on the EU’s wish to rebuild a solid partnership with the US.     Bucharest secured a 32-20 win against Gloria Buzau. In the Champions league, CSM
    are 4th-placed in group A, with two wins and one defeat on their

    CCR — The Constitutional Court of Romania on Wednesday postponed for September 18 discussing the notification made by President Klaus Iohannis in relation to modifying and amending the law on the organization and functioning of the Superior Council of Magistracy. President Iohannis claims that Parliament rejected, without any motivation, his request for re-examination of the provisions related to the functioning of the Superior Council of Magistracy, in which he showed that the role of the president as a guarantor of the independence of the judiciary and the functioning of the Judicial Inspection was affected. Also on Wednesday the Constitutional Court rejected the notification of the opposition Liberal Party and Save Romania Union on the modifications to the status of judges and prosecutors and postponed for September 25 debating the notifications of the two parties and of the Supreme Court related to the draft law modifying the criminal procedure code and the law on judicial organization. In another development, the Constitutional Court admitted Wednesday the notifications made by President Iohannis, and the opposition parties: the Liberal Party, Save Romania Union and the People’s Movement Party in relation to the law on the setting up of the Sovereign Fund for Development and Investments. The president of the Court Valer Dorneanu pointed out that the law was declared unconstitutional because the fund should not have been set up by a law but through a government decision. The Constitutional Court of Romania also admitted the notification regarding the right to free movement and stay of same sex spouses in the spirit of the European Court of Justice.



    Legal cooperation — The Romanian chief prosecutor Augustin Lazar on Wednesday talked in Bucharest with Michael Roth, minister of state for Europe with Germany’s Foreign Ministry. According to a communiqué of the General Prosecutor’s Office the two officials talked about bilateral and international legal cooperation, about the progress made by Romania in reforming the judiciary and fighting corruption as well as about current judicial issues, including the recent legislative modifications. Michael Roth remarked the progress made by the Romanian judicial system in the past years but expressed interest in and concern over the recent changes to the criminal legislation, the communiqué also shows.



    Polo — Romania’s national men’s water polo team obtained their first victory on Wednesday at the European Championships in Barcelona, after defeating Slovakia 9-5, in Group D. On Monday, in their debut match, the Romanians were defeated 5-11 by Serbia, holder of the continental title. The Romanians will play the last match of the group on Friday against Russia. The best 16 European water polo teams are participating in the 2018 championships. In the previous European Championship held two years ago the Romanian team was ranked 10th, their best performance being the 4th place in 1993 and 2006.



    Free trade agreement — ‘The signing of the free trade agreement between the EU and Japan is a huge chance for Romanian exporters, who should be aware of the opportunities presented to them. Romania should not miss the opportunity of being massively present on the market of the world’s 3rd biggest economy, said Stefan Radu Oprea, the Romanian minister for the Business Environment, Trade and Entrepreneurship. We recall that on July 17 the EU and Japan signed, in Tokyo, a free trade agreement that will eliminate nearly all tariffs on bilateral trade exchanges between the two sides. This is the biggest trade agreement ever negotiated by the EU, and after ratification in the European Parliament, Japan and the EU will create a free trade area with 600 million inhabitants, that will account for almost one thirds of the world’s GDP.



    Romania – Austria Cooperation — Economic relations with Austria are solid and have a still unexploited potential, said Wednesday the Romanian Foreign Minster Teodor Melesanu after meeting in Bucharest his Austrian counterpart, Mrs. Karin Kneissel. Austria, which on July 1 took over the EU’s rotating presidency, remains the second largest foreign investors in Romania and Romania is interested in continuing to attract further Austrian investments, minister Melescanu added. The Romanian foreign minister showed that the Romanian community was very well integrated within the Austrian society, the Romanian community being the second largest community of European citizens in Austria. In turn, the Austrian Foreign Minister pointed out that the talks touched upon such issues as education, human rights and energy. Karin Kneissel underlined that strengthening the rule of law was an important discussion.



    Inflation — June was the 5th consecutive month when Romania reported the highest annual inflation rate among EU states, with an increase in consumption prices of 4.7%, on the rise in comparison with an annual inflation rate of 4.6% reported in May, show data made public on Wednesday by Eurostat. The annual inflation rate within the EU stagnated in June at 2%, a similar value being reported in the Euro zone. Among the EU states, high annual inflation rates were also reported in Estonia (3.9%) and Hungary (3.2%). In early May, the National Bank of Romania revised upwards to 3.6% the inflation forecast for the end of 2018, the previous forecast pointing to a 3.5% inflation rate in 2018.



    Chess — On Wednesday Romania won gold in the boy’s section and silver in the girls’ section at the U -18 category of the European Youth Team Chess Championship hosted by the German city of Bad Blankenbrug between July 11 and 18. The boys’ team was made up of Gavrilescu, George Stoleriu, Alexandru-Bogdan Banzea and Victor Văsieşiu and the girls’ team of Daria-Miruna Lehaci and Alessia-Mihaela Ciolacu.     Transports — The Romanian minister for European funds Rovana Plumb and the transport minister Lucian Sova talked in Brussels with the EU Commissioner for regional policy Corina Cretu about the approval by the European Commission of the project for the M6 subway segment that will ensure the link with the Henri Coanda International Airport in Bucharest. According to a communiqué of the Transport Ministry in mid March the European Commission asked Metrorex company to provide clarifications in relation to their request for funding the project. The Transport Ministry officials say the value of the subway segment is almost 1.3 billion Euros of which Romania can cover at present only 330 million Euros from a loan and the state budget, with the rest to be possibly covered from European funds. Talks in Brussels also tackled the possibility of building a highway between Transylvania (in the center) and Moldavia (in the east). The route of the highway will be set in such a way so as to bring economic benefits to both Romania and the EU.



    Washington – Washington supports the territorial integrity and political sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia and reiterates its support for the democratically elected governments and people of those three countries, shows a US Congress resolution. The document shows the US’s commitment to supporting the three former Soviet republics on their way to European integration, and to obtain energy security and intensify commercial cooperation. The resolution also condemns the Russian aggression in the region, and calls for the withdrawal of Russian troops and ammunition which are illegally deployed on the territory of these three states. The resolution asks the allies from the EU and the UN to continue to put pressure on Moscow for it to comply with its international commitments and calls on the US Department of State to have a full-fledged and active dialogue against Russia’s interference in the democratic processes of the three sovereign nations. The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly has recently reiterated the need for a complete withdrawal of foreign armed forces from the territory of the Republic of Moldova, and NATO called for the pullout of Russian troops stationed in the three states, without their consent, in line with international commitments.



    Brussels — Securing border points, equipping them with state-of-the-art technology and modernizing the customs infrastructure are some of the main objectives of the Romanian Public Finance Ministry for 2018. This is the statement made by finance minister Eugen Teodorovici in Brussels at an event occasioned by the celebration of 50 years of customs union. Minister Teodorovici signed, on the occasion, the European Customs Charter under the high patronage of Pierre Moscovici, a European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs, and of Hartwig Loger, the Austrian finance minister, whose country is holding the presidency of the Council of the EU. Customs union was first mentioned in the Rome Treaty and came into force in 1968 when customs duties levied at the border between the states of the European Community were eliminated. The EU members are using a common set of rules, the so-called Customs Code, which lies at the basis of the Customs Union.



    Gărâna — The 22nd edition of the Gărâna Jazz Festival is under way in the southwest of Romania until Sunday. The program includes 25 concerts by musicians from 16 countries. Besides concerts, the audience will have the opportunity to attend the presentation of an experiment — installation made by painter Gheorghe Fikl, during the theater play “Farm” by the Auăleu troupe, the Vinyl National Fair, the exhibition of jazz posters as well as the launch of the book ‘Instant Stage’ by Ioana Tăut. In the past 20 years, more than 70 thousand spectators and many internationally-famed artists shared the experience of avant-garde jazz music in the open air, in the small Romanian village of Gărâna.



    B-Fit — As of Friday until August 5 Bucharest will host, each weekend, the 10th edition of the International Street Theater Festival, B-Fit in the Street. This anniversary edition of the festival, called “A Romanian Story in the Centennial Year” includes tens of shows performed by 400 artists from12 countries among which Denmark, Slovakia, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Romania. The world premiere of the aerial acrobatics show ‘Sonics in Wish’ from Italy will take place on July 14.



    Luxemburg — FC Viitorul football team, 4th ranked in Romania’s football championship, on Thursday won the away match against Racing Union Luxemburg 2-0, in the first preliminary round of Europa League. The return match will take place in Romania on July 19. If they defeat the team of Luxemburg, FC Viitorul will play in the second preliminary round against Vitesse Arnhem of the Netherlands. Also playing in the Europa League preliminaries will be CSU Craiova, the Cup winner, and vice-champions FCSB. Title holder CFR Cluj will play in the preliminaries of the Champions League.     TALKS — The Prime Minister of Romania, Mihai Tudose, accepted to meet the representatives of 43 NGOs active in the street protests initiated against the planned changes in the justice laws and the criminal codes. In a Facebook post, Tudose voiced his openness to dialogue and suggested that the meeting took place on December 27. The 43 organisations sent an open letter to the Prime Minister, expressing their willingness to contribute to dialogue, consultation and solutions, in full compliance with the rule of law, fundamental human rights and the democratic principles. New street protests were held on Saturday night in Bucharest and other Romanian cities, against the bills designed to amend the justice laws. On Friday, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland sent a letter to the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis, urging him to request an opinion from the Venice Commission on the legislative reform already endorsed by Parliament.




    CHRISTMAS — Orthodox believers celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25th, one of the greatest feast days of the Christian world. “The celebration of Nativity is a call for compassion and solidarity with those who need our support. I wish you a happy Christmas, wherever you are,” reads a message from the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis.




    ROYAL HOUSE — This is the first Christmas without King Michael, but the Royal House is celebrating the Nativity and pays tribute to the life and achievements of the 4th monarch of the Romanian state, the Custodian of the Crown, H.M. Margareta wrote in a message to the nation, as Romania’s former sovereign used to send every Christmas Eve. She noted the solidarity of the Romanian people during the King’s funeral 2 weeks ago, and recalled the care and attention with which every year King Michael would write his Christmas address, which during the exile years was his only form of communication with the Romanians. Michael I died on December 5, in Switzerland, aged 96, and was buried on December 16, in Curtea de Arges, southern Romania.




    HOLIDAYS — Thousands of Romanians will be spending their holidays in mountain resorts. At the top of the travel destinations these days are the resorts in the Prahova Valley region in the south of Romania, such as Predeal, Sinaia and Buşteni, where occupancy rates are around 80%. In Bâlea Lac, in Făgăraş Mountains, the new Ice Hotel, the only one of its kind in Romania, has opened today. Most of the tourists having booked a room here come from abroad. Music is the chosen theme of this 13th ice hotel built at over 2,000 metres in Făgăraş Mountains. Each of the 15 rooms has been decorated with snow and ice sculptures representing Romanian and international music stars.




    POLICE — In Romania, nearly 23,000 police, gendarmes and fire fighters are working every day throughout the Christmas holiday. Special attention will be paid to preventing public order incidents, fighting anti-social conduct, streamlining road traffic and check point transit, as well as to the management of emergency situations. Police workers and gendarmes will be present especially in crowded places like fairs, train stations, tourist resorts, as well as over 16,400 churches, where special religious services will be held. Bulgarian-speaking Romanian policemen will also be part of joint patrols with their counterparts from the neighbouring Bulgaria, in the mountain resort of Bansko, until next March, providing support and assistance to the Bulgarian police. This is the 8th winter season when such joint missions are organised in Bulgaria.




    TENNIS — The Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, number 1 in the world, plays today against the Czech Karolina Pliskova, no 4 WTA, in the Intercontinental World Tennis Championship finals in Thailand. On Saturday in the quarter-final, Halep defeated Britain’s Johanna Konta, 2-0, while Pliskova outplayed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, no 7 WTA. Ostapenko and Konta are playing on Sunday for the 3rd place in the competition.
