Bianca Boeroiu, an Emmy Award Winner

Bianca Boeroiu, one of the most famous Romanian make-up artists, won the 2023 Emmy Award for Best Contemporary Make-up.

She received the prestigious award for the make-up created for the series Wednesday, directed by Tim Burton, produced by Netflix and shot in Romania, with several Romanian artists and technicians as part of the team. Bianca has put her signature on numerous commercials and videos, and has ended up collaborating with famous actors such as Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton or John Malkovich. In Romania, she already has 3 GOPO awards and 9 nominations for films such as “When I Want to Whistle, I Whistle”, “Loverboy”, “A Step Behind the Seraphim”, “Happy Funerals”, “Aferim” and others. Bianca Boeroiu told us how she became involved in the making of the “Wednesday” series: “The collaboration with Tim Burton came after an interview I gave with the designer of this project. That’s how I ended up working in the team that did the actors’ make-up, along with colleagues from England and colleagues from Romania. I did the make-up for numerous characters, most of Wednesday’s colleagues, I’m referring especially to those from Nevermore Academy. I also did the make-up for the mayor of the city and that of a very important character, Eugene, one of the strangest students of Nevermore Academy and the president of the school’s beekeeping club. In fact, almost all the characters in this series had the make-up done by me, obviously excluding the famous actors who were taken care of by the designer of this project and the protagonist of the series, Jenna Ortega, who had her own make-up. As regards preparations for a project of this type, the director already has a vision for the characters. Of course, we also read the script, we have production meetings, then tests. If it is a period production, it is an extra challenge for us, but also for a contemporary film, as the make-up is very important. In the case of the “Wednesday” series, the characters were quite well outlined by the designer and director Tim Burton, but we also had our share of contribution.”

Earlier this year, Bianca Boeroiu participated in the Emmy Awards ceremony: “I managed to get there and I am very glad that I did. It was an extraordinary experience, I hope to have the opportunity to get to such events again. Due to this award, I travelled for the first time to the United States of America, to Los Angeles, and I found it fascinating. I stayed for almost a week and met with friends and colleagues who are make-up specialists, with whom I have collaborated on other projects in Romania. It was an intense and emotional experience, I will never forget the moment when they pronounced “Wednesday” on stage, because the result is not known in advance, it is like at the Gopo Awards, when you open the envelope you find out if you have won or not. And this award really does increase your visibility. I have worked in international productions before, mostly European, I also had a Disney collaboration and I am open to other such proposals.”

Ceramic art teacher, Bianca Boeroiu has been working for over 20 years at the National Children’s Palace in Bucharest and is currently working on a course support for these ceramics classes: “I graduated from the National University of Arts in Bucharest, Ceramics – Decorative Arts department and, immediately after graduating from college, I took this teaching position at the National Children’s Palace, something that I love doing and something I would never give it up, no matter how many offers I would receive as a make-up artist. It’s an area where I feel really good, children really give you an extraordinary energy and a lot of satisfaction. I have been attracted to make-up since I was little and a friend gave me this suggestion, to take a course in this direction. At first I was a little skeptical, I admit, I didn’t even know that there was a department at the University of Arts where you could learn this specialization. After I discovered it, things came naturally, that is, I did everything with great pleasure and enthusiasm and that’s how things came together. Since then I have been almost always involved in projects of this type, at first mostly Romanian, after which international collaborations followed.”

Bianca Boeroiu is also a member of the Union of Plastic Artists of Romania, her works winning the Debut Award in Ceramics at the Fire Arts Biennial.

The womens clay court tennis tournament in Palermo seems to have always drawn women tennis players from Romania to take part in it. We should not forget the Romanian women tennis players have many supporters in Sicily, especially among the fellow Romanians who settled there. Also, the Romanians feel quite at home playing on a clay court. We recall that 30 years ago, in 1994 and 1995, another Romanian, Irina Sparlea won the trophy. In 2021, Elena‑Gabriela Ruse was a whisker away from winning, yet she was defeated by US challenger Danielle Collins. In 2022, Irina Begu emerged as the winner of the Palermo tournament as in the final the Romanian overpowered her opponent, Italys Lucia Bronzetti. Reason enough for Radio Romania International to designate Irina the Athlete of the week.

Irina Begu was 6th-seeded in Palermo. Her successful run includes a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win against Spains Marina Bassols Ribera, another three-set win against French opponent Océane Dodin, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, in the second round, and a more laid-back, two-set win against Diane Parry, also from France 6-1, 6-3. Irinas trail in Palermo also includes a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win against the 4th-seeded player, Spains Sara Sorribes Tormo in the semi-finals; it was Irina Begus most difficult confrontation in the tournament, yet the Romanian braced up and won, after more than three hours of play. Irina Begu had no problem securing a two-set win against Italian challenger Lucia Bronzetti, 6-2, 6-2. For her exceptional feat in Sicily, Begu received 26, 770 Euro and 280 WTA points

Irina Camelia Begu was born in Bucharest. She turns 32 in August this year. Her recent win in Palermo only adds to other noteworthy feats on her record. Irina also has four womens singles WTA tournaments she won in Tashkent, in 2012, in Seoul, in 2015, in Florianopolis, the USA, in 2016 and in Bucharest, in 2017. In the womens doubles, Irina Begu won nine tournaments, in Hobart in 2012, jointly with Monica Niculescu, in s-Hertogenbosch, in 2013, pairing up with Anabel Medina Garrigues and in Rio, in 2014, jointly with Maria Irigoyen. Also in 2014, in Seoul, Irina emerged as winner together with Lara Arruabarrena, then in 2017, jointly with Raluca Olaru, she won the tournament in Bucharest. Also in 2017, Irina Begu and sara Errani won the tournament in Tianjin. In 2018, Irina Camelia Begu won two other WTA tournaments, in Shenzhen, pairing up with Simona Halep, and again in Bucharest, this time alongside Andreea Mitu, also in 2018. There is no outright winner of Sunday’s parliamentary elections, and the centre-right parties total 50% of the votes cast, President Klaus Iohannis stated on Monday. He announced that in the coming days he would call the parliamentary parties for consultations. In another move, the Liberal PM Ludovic Orban has resigned. Romanians in the Diaspora voted over the course of two days, on Saturday and Sunday, the highest voter turnout being reported in Italy, Moldova, Spain, Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Germany and France. The new Parliament will have 465 MPs – 136 Senators and 329 Deputies. Sundays voter turnout stood at 27% of the total number of voters registered on permanent electoral lists, the lowest in the last 30 years.

The total number of infections has thus climbed to 517 thousand, while the death toll stands at 12,447. 1,280 people are currently in intensive care. 80% of people infected with COVID-19 have recovered. Moldova – Thousands protested on Sunday in the Moldovan capital-city Chişinău, calling for the dissolution of Parliament, at present controlled by a pro-Russian majority. The Moldovan Parliament recently voted for limiting the presidents prerogatives and strengthening the status of the Russian language. The rally was staged following a public appeal launched by the pro-European President elect, Maia Sandu. Sandus call was answered by the leaders of the opposition parties and also of the non-parliamentary political parties. Protesters accused Parliament and the Government of promoting corruption and of the misappropriation of public funds, also calling for snap elections. Maia Sandu said Sundays protest was not advocating any ideology or political party, but was simply aimed at voicing the will of the people, who grew tired of corruption and want a better life. The acting president, Igor Dodon, as well as members of the Socialist Party in Parliament, have refused to comment on the allegations.

Brexit – Representatives of Great Britain and the European Union continue negotiations in Brussels with a view to reaching consensus on a post-Brexit agreement, the absence of which would have serious economic consequences for both sides. On Sunday evening, the chief negotiators conveyed diverging messages on how talks are progressing. EU officials said they are close to solving one the major obstacles, related to the fishing rights agreement, whereas the British side dismissed the information. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are expected to make an assessment on Monday night on the progress reported so far in striking a trade agreement, which both the British and the European Parliament must ratify before taking effect on January 1, 2021. Londons future relation with Brussels is also expected to rank high on the agenda of the summit in Brussels, to be held on Thursday and Friday. The UK is still subject to EU legislation following its official withdrawal on January 31, 2020. (Tr. V. Palcu, L. Simion)
