    Echipa de volei masculin Arcada
    Galaţi a fost eliminată din Liga Campionilor. Formația română a fost învinsă în
    manșa secundă a primului tur preliminar, în deplasare, de echipa cehă CEZ
    Karlovarsko, cu scorul de 3 la 2 şi cu 15-10 în ”setul de aur”. Arcada
    câştigase în prima manşă cu 3-2. Gălățenii rămân totuși în competițiile
    europene, urmând a evolua în preliminariile Cupei CEV, unde vor înfrunta o altă
    echipă din Cehia, pe VK Lvi Praga, luna viitoare.


    Rămânem la volei masculin pentru a
    nota că, în prima manşă din turul întâi al Cupei României, Dinamo Bucureşti, deţinătoarea trofeului, a
    trecut de Rapid Bucureşti cu scorul de 3-0. Jocul s-a desfășurat pe terenul
    rapidiștilor. Manșa secundă va avea loc pe 20 octombrie. Confruntarea dintre
    Dinamo și Rapid este un derby de mare tradiție al voleiului masculin românesc.
    În anii 1966 și 1967, cele două formații și-au disputat Cupa Campionilor
    Europeni. De fiecare dată s-a impus Dinamo.


    Echipa de baschet masculin CSM CSU
    Oradea a debutat cu stângul în Grupa H a competiţiei FIBA Europe Cup. Vicecampioana României a
    fost învinsă pe teren propriu de formația poloneză Legia Varşovia, cu scorul de
    76-66. În celălalt meci al grupei, Szolnoki Olajbányász a trecut de FC Porto cu
    81-64. În etapa a doua, pe 20 octombrie, sunt programate partidele Legia -
    Szolnoki şi FC Porto – CSM CSU Oradea.


    Biroul federal al Federaţiei Române
    de Rugby a decis, miercuri, ca finalele SuperLigii, programate în weekend, la
    București, pe Stadionul Naţional de Rugby Arcul de Triumf, să se dispute fără
    spectatori. Motivul este evoluţia îngrijorătoare a situaţiei sanitare din
    Bucureşti. Această decizie ţine cont de ratele ridicate de infectare din
    Bucureşti, dar şi din zonele limitrofe şi are ca scop diminuarea riscului
    epidemiologic în rândul spectatorilor, organizatorilor şi al sportivilor,
    precizează un comunicat al Federației Române de Rugby.


    De vineri până duminică, la
    Cluj-Napoca are loc o importantă competiție internațională de gimnastică ritmică. World Challenge Cup va
    aduce în fața publicului din România o bună parte din elita acestui sport.
    Competiția este formată din două probe distincte: proba individuală și proba de
    ansamblu. Vineri și sâmbătă au loc calificările, când gimnastele vor lupta
    pentru obținerea punctelor necesare accederii în finala de duminică.

    AIIB — Romania has become a member of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The Romanian Foreign Ministry has hailed Romania’s accession to AIIB, considering that it acknowledges the country’s capacity to participate in promoting the objectives of the financial institution aimed at supporting infrastructure and economic development projects. The Foreign Ministry sees Romania’s accession to the AIIB as a continuation of actions meant to promote Romania’s ties with the Asian countries. Romania and the Romanian companies will have the possibility to access the bank’s financial mechanisms in order to diversify cooperation with Asian partners in such domains as energy, urban development, transports, IT and agriculture. The AIIB, which was set up in 2016, is based in Beijing. Other European countries that are bank members are France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Poland.



    Ransomware attack — Computers in at least 150 countries, Romania included, have been affected by the recent, unprecedented ‘ransomware’ attack, according to latest information. Among the almost 200 thousand victims of the attack were many organizations and enterprises such as the British hospitals, the Russian banking system and the French carmaker Renault. Once the hackers gained access to computers they encrypted all the files, and the only way to unlock them was to pay a ransom. Europol fears the number of victims will increase on Monday when people who return to work will open their computers.



    USR — Nicuşor Dan is the president elect of the Save Romania Union, after having won a majority of votes at the fist congress of the party which was held between May 12- 14 in the city of Cluj-Napoca, northwest. The party also drafted its statute, its most important provision referring to the organization of internal referendums on important decisions that are to be made at party level. The document also writes that the new leadership will make public their wealth statements and statements of purpose on the party’s website. The opposition Save Romania Union, the newest party on the Romanian political scene, and the third party in Parliament in terms of seats held, intends to become, in two years’ time, the second most important party of Romania, to be able to appoint the prime minister at the 2020 elections. At the same time, the Save Romania Union party wants to have equal chances in the 2020 elections for mayors in Romania’s big cities.



    Paris — The new French president, Emmanuel Macron, has promised to re-establish the EU and to make European citizens regain trust in the union. One week after the landslide victory he obtained in the second round of the presidential ballot against the far right candidate Marine Le Pen, centrist Emmanuel Macron was inaugurated Sunday as France’s youngest ever president, as part of a ceremony held in Paris. Aged 39, Macron wants to boost the French economy, to reform the country’s political life and curb the unemployment rate. Emmanuel Macron succeeds Socialist president François Hollande. On Monday, the French president will make his first visit abroad to Germany, for talks with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel.



    Eurovision — Romania was ranked 7th in this year’s Eurovision contest held in Kiev, Ukraine. Romania was represented by Ilinca and Alex Florea with the piece “Yodel it!” Many sites wrote about the Romanian artists that they were the most beloved pair at the 2017 edition of the contest. The Eurovision contest, which reached its 65th edition this year, took place under the motto “Celebrate Diversity”. The winner was Portugal’s representative, Salvator Sobral, with the song “Amar Pelos Dois”.



    Sports — The Romanian gymnast Larisa Iordache on Sunday won the gold medal in the beam final, in the FIG stage of the World Challenge Cup held in Koper, Slovenia. This is Larisa Iordache’s 2nd medal in this competition, after on Saturday she also won gold in the floor event. The FIG stage of the World Challenge Cup is the first international contest in which Larisa Iordache participated after the European Championship hosted by the northwestern Romanian city of Cluj Napoca, where she got bronze in the beam event. In another development, on Saturday, Romanian tennis player Simona Halep (8th WTA) won the Madrid tournament for the 2nd consecutive year. The tournament had prizes up for grabs worth more than 5 million dollars. She defeated French player Kristina Mladenovici in three sets. (translation by L. Simion)

    Athlete of the Week on RRI – Gymnast Catalina Ponor


    Romanian gymnast Catalina Ponor last Friday won gold in the beam and floor finals in the International Indoor Championships help in Doha, which counted towards the World Challenge Cup. In the beam finals, Catalina ranked 1st with 15,300 points, followed by Ashleigh Brennan of Australia with 14,325 points and Marta Pihan-Kulesza of Poland with 13,900 points. Catalina Ponor won the floor event with a score of 15,275 points, followed by Romanian Diana Bulimar with 14,725 points and Yuyuan Jiang of China with 14,000 points.


    Also in Thursday’s individual apparatus finals, Romanian Vlad Cotuna won bronze in the floor event. For her outstanding achievement, we have designated Catalina Ponor Athlete of the Week on RRI.


    Catalina Ponor was born on August 20th 1987 in the south-eastern city of Constanta. She took up gymnastics early at merely 4 years of age and enrolled in the Farul Sports Club. In 2002 she was drafted into the extended team of Romania and started training in Deva. In 2003 she joined the Romanian women’s national team, and managed to produce a worldwide surprise at the World Indoor Championships in Anaheim, California, the US, where she won three silver medals in the teams all-round, beam and floor events the very same year. Prior to the US competition, Catalina’s results weren’t in the least indicative of her hidden potential. At the 2003 National Championships she had won bronze in the beam finals while at the International championships in Romania in 2004 she had improved her result by grabbing silver.


    Catalina’s first moment of glory came at the European Championships held in Amsterdam in 2004 when she won no less than three gold medals, in the same events as in the Anaheim World Championships the previous year: in the team, beam and floor events.


    The pattern repeated the next year at the Summer Olympics in Athens. With three Olympic gold medals, Catalina Ponor was rated the most medal-winning Romanian athlete at the Summer Olympics, and was subsequently designated best athlete of 2004 and best world gymnast the same year.


    She continued her good run at the European Championships in 2005 and 2006, when she won gold in the beam event and at the World Championships in Stuttgart, where she won bronze in the team event. Catalina took a break from gymnastics but resumed training early last year after four years of absence.
