    Romania came out 4th at the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup in Chengdu (China), after losing 2-8 the match for the 3rd place against Hong Kong on Sunday. In the competition’s semis, Romania was defeated by China (8-1). Romania qualified for the semi-finals of the Mixed Team Table Tennis World Cup after defeating Germany 8-5 and after an 8-2 victory in the match against Japan, a world table tennis powerhouse, but which did not line up its top team in Chengdu. It is the best performance for the Romanian team at a Mixed Team World Cup, a competition won this year by the host team, China, which defeated South Korea in the final (8-1). The Romanian team was trained by Andrei Filimon and Ionuț Seni, and consisted of Bernadette Szocs (no 14 in the world), Elizabeta Samara (world no 51), Adina Diaconu (91), Andreea Dragoman (112), Ovidiu Ionescu (world no 46), Eduard Ionescu (75), Andrei Istrate (169) and Darius Movileanu (197).

     

     

    Romania was defeated by Hungary (37-29), on Sunday evening, in Debrecen, in a match in the main Group I of the European Women’s Handball Championship, hosted by Austria, Hungary and Switzerland. With a young team, undergoing reconstruction, Romania defeated the valuable team of Sweden 25-23 in another main Group I match, after previously losing to France, 25 – 30. Romania has 2 points and is in 5th place in the group, with the same number of points as 4th-placed Sweden. Top of the group are Hungary and France, each with 8 points, and Montenegro – 4 points. In the last match in the group, scheduled for Tuesday, December 10, Romania will take on Poland, which is in last place in the group, with zero points.

     

    The Romanians Monica Niculescu and Gabriela Ruse Sunday won the doubles event of the WTA 125 tennis tournament in Angers (France), with EUR 100,000 in total prize money. In the final they defeated Belinda Bencic / Celine Naef (Switzerland) 6-3, 6-4. This is the second WTA 125 doubles title won by Niculescu and Ruse, after the one in Hong Kong, in October.

     

    We end with results of the matches in the 19th round of Romania’s football Super League. On Friday, Sepsi OSK Sfântu Gheorghe beat Rapid Bucharest 2-0. On Saturday, Dinamo București won 1-0 away from home against Gloria Buzău, and Petrolul Ploiești and Universitatea Craiova drew 1-1. The round continued on Sunday with the matches UTA ​​Arad vs Unirea Slobozia 3-4, Politehnica Iaşi vs Farul Constanţa 2-2 and FCSB vs FC Botoşani 2-1. Before the last two matches in the round, Hermannstadt vs Oţelul Galaţi and Universitatea Cluj vs CFR Cluj, scheduled for Monday, the top places in the standings were FCSB – 33 points, Dinamo Bucharest – 32 points, CFR Cluj 31 points and Universitatea Cluj – 30 points.     The Romanian tennis player Miriam Bulgaru won the WTA 125 tournament in Bucharest, which ended on Sunday. She won the final against Kathinka von Deichmann, of Liechtenstein, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. This has been Bulgaru’s best performance so far, for which she was rewarded with USD 15,000 and 125 WTA points.

     

    Saturday and Sunday saw matches in the second round of the women’s handball Champions League. In Group B, Romanian vice-champions Rapid Bucharest Sunday managed a notable performance, with a 30-30 draw away from home against the Norwegian side Vipers Kristiansand, last year’s League champions. Top scorers for Rapid were Albertina Kassoma with 6 goals and Eliza Buceschi (5 goals). In the next round, Rapid will take on Ludwigsburg (Germany), on Sunday in Bucharest.

     

    In Group A, on Saturday, Gloria Bistriţa-Năsăud lost their away game against the French team Metz, (26-28). Top scorer for the Romanian side was Danila So Delgado with 8 goals. On Sunday, in Bucharest, CSM won against Storhamar (Norway), 32-28. The Romanian champions’ best player was Elizabeth Omoregie (8 goals). This Saturday, Gloria plays at home against Krim Ljubljana (Slovenia), while CSM Bucharest will face Podravka Koprivnica in Croatia.

     

    The 9th round of the Romanian football Super League also took place this weekend. On Friday, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe won 3-0 on home turf against FC Botoşani, and Dinamo won in Bucharest, 1-0 against Unirea Slobozia. Saturday brought 2 draws: Gloria Buzău vs Otelul Galaţi (0-0) and Petrolul Ploieşti vs Farul Constanţa (1-1). On Sunday, Politehnica Iaşi defeated Universitatea Craiova (2-0), while CFR Cluj and FCSB drew (2-all) in Cluj. The last 2 matches in this round were scheduled for Monday, UTA vs. Hermannstadt and Rapid Bucharest vs. Universitatea Cluj.     de tenis Ana Bogdan a câştigat sâmbătă turneul WTA 125 de la Parma, dotat cu
    premii de 100 de mii de euro. Cap de
    serie numărul 2, românca a trecut în finală de principala favorită, jucătoarea
    slovacă Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, cu 7-5, 6-1. Ea a primit, pentru acest
    succes, 13.040 de euro şi 160 de puncte WTA.


    Weekendul abia
    încheiat nu a priit echipelor care reprezintă România în Liga Campionilor la
    handbal feminin. Sâmbătă, CSM Bucureşti a pierdut, acasă, cu 23 la 27 în faţa
    formaţiei maghiare Győr. Campioana României ocupă, după trei etape, locul 5 în
    Grupa A, cu 2 puncte, după o victorie şi două înfrângeri. Tot un succes şi două
    înfrângeri are şi Rapid Bucureşti, in Grupa B. Vicecampioana României a fost
    invinsă categoric, la Bucureşti, duminică, de echipa daneză Ikast, cu 35 la 27.
    Cu două puncte, Rapid ocupă locul 6 în grupă.


    România nu a reuşit
    să câştige nicio medalie la Campionatele Mondiale de lupte de la Belgrad şi
    nici nu a calificat vreun sportiv la Jocurile Olimpice de la Paris prin
    intermediul acestei competiţii. La întrecerile din capitala sârbă, delegaţia
    română a fost compusă din 16 luptători, dintre care 5 la lupte libere, 5 la
    greco-romane şi 6 în competiţia feminină.


    Scrimera americană
    Zander Rhoades a câştigat Memorialul Tudor Petruş la floretă, turneu satelit
    din Cupa Mondială, desfăşurat duminică la Timişoara. Ea a învins-o în finală pe
    floretista italiană Carlotta Ferrari, cu scorul de 15-11. Podiumul a fost completat
    de românca Emilia Corbu şi de ucraineanca Alina Poloziuk.


    Mai departe,
    fotbal. În weekend au avut loc jocuri contând pentru etapa a zecea a
    campionatului Superligii române. Vineri, Oţelul Galaţi a trecut, în deplasare,
    de FC U Craiova cu 2-0. Tot în deplasare şi tot cu 2-0, Farul Constanţa a
    dispus de Dinamo Bucureşti. Sâmbătă, Poli Iaşi a câştigat la Voluntari cu 2-1,
    apoi FC Botoşani a încheiat la egalitate, 2 la 2, jocul disputat acasă cu UTA.
    Ultima partidă a zilei, dintre Universitatea Cluj şi Universitatea Craiova,
    disputată pe terenul ardelenilor, s-a încheiat tot egal: 1 la 1. Duminică, jocul de la Ploieşti, dintre
    Petrolul şi Hermannstadt, s-a terminat fără gol marcat. A urmat derby-ul
    etapei, în care FCSB a trecut, la Sfântu Gheorghe, de Sepsi, cu 5 la 2. Luni,
    la Bucureşti, ultimul joc al etapei: Rapid cu CFR Cluj. În clasament conduce FCSB, cu 25 de puncte.

    Romania finished the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, with 2 wins. On Saturday, the Romanian womens quadruple sculls team comprising Emanuela-Ioana Ciotău, Alexandra Ungureanu, Cristina Drugă and Patricia Cireş, won the gold. The next day, in the double sculls race, Andrada-Maria Moroşanu and Iulia-Liliana Bălăucă also won the gold medals. These results placed Romania on the 6th place in the nations ranking, which was topped by Italy with a total of 9 medals, 5 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze.



    The Romanian tennis player Ana Bogdan won the WTA 125 tournament in Iaşi, which had EUR 100,000 in total prize money. Ana Bogdan takes home EUR 13,040 and 160 WTA points. In the same tournaments doubles final, the Romanians Irina Bara and Monica Niculescu were defeated by Veronika Erjavec and Dalila Jakupovic (Slovenia), 6-4, 6-4.



    The World Swimming Championships continue in Fukuoka, Japan. David Popovici, the defending world champion in the 100 and 200m freestyle events, entered the competition on Monday morning. He qualified into the semifinals of the 200m race, with the final scheduled for Tuesday.



    This weekend also saw matches counting towards the second leg of the Romanian football Super League. On Friday Sepsi OSK Sfântu Gheorghe won 1-0 on home turf against FC U Craiova 1948, while CFR Arad defeated the local team UTA 3-1. She defeated the Hungarian player Panna Udvardy in the final, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Bogdan thus obtained the most important title of her career, after in 2019 she won the ITF tournament in Dubai. It was her second final in just a week, after that of the WTA 250 tournament in Warsaw, where she lost last Sunday to the French Caroline Garcia.
